Ambassador's killing shines light on Muslim sensitivities around Prophet Mohammed

By Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) – Violence over depictions of the Prophet Mohammed may mystify many non-Muslims, but it speaks to a central tenet of Islam: that the Prophet was a man, not God, and that portraying him threatens to lead to worshiping a human instead of Allah.

“It's all rooted in the notion of idol worship,” says Akbar Ahmed, who chairs the Islamic Studies department at American University. “In Islam, the notion of God versus any depiction of God or any sacred figure is very strong."

“The Prophet himself was aware that if people saw his face portrayed by people, they would soon start worshiping him,” Ahmed says. “So he himself spoke against such images, saying ‘I’m just a man.’”

The prohibition against such portrayals was on stark display Tuesday, as mobs in Egypt and Libya attacked U.S. compounds in response to a film that vilifies the Prophet Mohammed, who founded Islam in the 7th century. The attack on the U.S. personnel in Benghazi, Libya, was orchestrated by extremists who used the protests as a diversion, U.S. sources told CNN Wednesday.

The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi killed J. Christopher Stevens, Washington's ambassador to Libya, as well as three other Americans at the compound.

The film that’s believed to have inspired the violence depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a child molester, womanizer and ruthless killer, going a big step beyond violating the basic Muslim prohibition against depicting the Prophet, even in a favorable light.

There are questions about who is behind the movie. Initial reports identified a supposedly Israeli-American real-estate developer named Sam Bacile, but it's unclear if that person even exists. A member of the film's production staff told CNN that the producer's name was listed as Abenob Nakoula Basseley.

In Sunni mosques, the largest branch of the faith, there are no images of people of any kind. The spaces are often decorated with verses from the Quran.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Mohamed Magid, an imam who leads the Islamic Society of North America, says the Muslim prohibition on depicting prophets extends to Jesus and Moses, who Islam treats as prophets.

“Pictures and images are prohibited from being worshiped,” Magid says.

There have been historical instances of Muslims depicting the Prophet, says Omid Safi, a religious studies professor at the University of North Carolina who has studied the issue.

"We have had visual depictions of the Prophet in the form of miniatures and pictures in the Iranian context, the Turkish context, the central Asian Context,” says Safi, author of the book "Memories of Mohammed." “The one significant context where depictions of the Prophet have not been image-related has been in the Arab context.”

“As you go farther east, away from the Arabian Peninsula, you find depictions of the prophet in art,” said Johari Abdul-Malik, the imam for Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia. He noted that images of the teachings of the prophet were sometimes used to bridge gaps in illiteracy.

But even depictions of the Prophet by Muslim artists has been a sensitive issue.

Akbar, a former Pakistani ambassador to the United Kingdom, says that Muslim artists in the 15th and 16th centuries would depict the Prophet but took pains to avoid drawing his face.

“It would be as if he was wearing a veil on his face, so the really orthodox could not object – that was the solution they found," Akbar says.

In a  Muslim film called “The Messenger,” which circulated throughout the Muslim world in the 1970s and 1980s, the Prophet is depicted only as a shadow.

Adbul-Malik said that in the Quran, there is “no statement from the prophet requesting his image not be recorded.” The passages relating to a ban on creating images of the prophets come from the hadith, recordings of the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed and his closest companions. The hadith is not viewed on the same plane as the Quran but as important to understanding the Quran.

Scholars of religion say Muslim opposition to portraying Mohammed wasn’t generally violated in earlier centuries because of a gulf between much of the Muslim world and the West.

In the age of globalization, non-Muslims and critics of Islam have felt free to depict Mohammed, including in offensive ways.

In 2006, a Danish cartoonist’s depiction of the Prophet wearing a bomb as a turban with a lit fuse provoked demonstrations across the world.

Akbar says that until relatively recently, depictions of Jesus tended to be reverential, but Christianity has had a decades-long head start in dealing with negative portrayals of Jesus in film and art.

Yes every one sure have a right to own their view but should it hurt the feelings of others?
Which religion ever told to be indifferent to the sentiments of ?
Never the Islam.... which has a basic meaning of peace and love.....And to respect the others religion (SURA KAFERUN)
We are to be tolerant if we are real followers. Blood shed only bring the same. If we Muslim believe in Allah then we should also believe that all the human and surroundings are created by Him and a part of his world and we should not kill or destroy any part of it... as WE have NO RIGHTS for doing so.

Your sensitivity is your own problem. I cannot know what you believe in, what make you tick, what have you experienced etc.
I may choose or choose not to be sensitive on a case by case basis, but I'll not be forced to pass my life worrying if I have insulted someone or not.
I do not care how insulted you feel, you have a right to insult me back or shut up. You have no right to kill anyone. If these towelheads are using collective punishment, so should we.

As a muslim myself and an proud american as well i will say this- what they are doing is an INSULT to the prophet Muhammad in it of itself- by acting like baboons and causing disorder and chaos they break this saying of the prophet that "if you kill even one person its as if you killed all of humanity and if you saved a person, its as if you save all of humanity." we muslims are proud and love our prophet but this is just absolutely disgraceful to all the other Muslims all over the world. NO WHERE in the Qur'an does it EVER sanction this stupidity and disregard for life. instead of storming US embassies they should be civil and write up letters, arrange meetings, hold conferences telling that what has happeend wasnt right. Islam says that you have to be in EVERY matter have grace, even if others act bad towards you you need to act the better person. these so called muslims are nothing but a cancer to every other muslim who actually follow the Qur'an and try to be a good person of society. I am not trying to proselytize or anything but I am saying i as a American Muslim am getting SICK of these apes. Islam's essence is this- Love for all hatred for none.

Good to hear this .. question – why can't "reasonable" Muslims in the countries where this is happening establish law and order? There's GOT to be sympathy if not complete agreement with what the "baboons" are doing. In the meantime, the entire faith takes a hit in popular opinion. None of this bodes well for American Muslims of course.

Fazia Susan. So, in essence, you are still saying that it is still an insult if your propeht is insulted, or made fun of? How childish. Acting just like "baboons." Jesus never existed, and your prophet was an illiterate psychopathic pedophile.

Depictions of the 'prophet' in movie or picture is considered blasphemy, a capital crime under Islamic Sharia law. Therefore pious Muslims who support sharia support this kind of behavior. Those who don't support the sharia are in fact infidels as well.

If they all do the reasonable thing as you said, they are buddhists, not muslims. I don't see hords of muslims standing on the street screaming for reasons and dialogues instead of calls for murder. There is something fundamentally wrong with a religion that allow violence to protect its integrity and image.

As a Chistian I do respect your opinion, it seems sincere and sounds like an intelligent response to this sad situation. I also see the same sort of thing happening with Christianity. So called christians have for many years persecuted others in the name of Christ, but Christ never commanded anything like that and stood for love always.

I do however question why in Muslim dominated countries more true followers of the Koran dont find the time to make these few apes cease and desist! Very odd indeed that Amercan Muslims are so how can I say this..Neutral? But if you are as sincere as you claim perhaps you should involve others and take these apes down...its tough to take down the majority though..

      Hey Susan,
do u know that muham_mad was a pedophile? He married a child bride Aisha when she was 6 and consummated the marriage when she was 9.
DO u really think a prophet of god would be a pedophile??? All islamic women should know about Aisha, and im sure u do.. But u ignore this and say islam is good, and muham_mad was also good? That makes no sense.
Quran sure 4:34 -> a man should not be asked why he beat his wife.
Do u know that muham_mad in the quran condones wife beating?? Why do u respect muham_mad so much when he says in the quran itself to beat women. Have u been brainwashed from childhood to believe islam is true? It sure seems like it. Muham_mad also said in the quran that women are inferior to men in intelligence.
Which so much negativity to women in the quran, its not secret why women in islamic countries r treated like property.

Susan, You say the prophet had a saying, "if you kill even one person its as if you killed all of humanity and if you saved a person, its as if you save all of humanity." That is not true. That is a Jewish saying from the story of Cain and Abel that Mohammad used in the Qur'an against the Jews, to show why they were unworthy. He didn't actually believer or practice the things he was quoting from other religions to use against them. If he did then he would never have chopped the heads off every post pubescent male in one Jewish tribe that he victimized. He exterminated all the males in a tribe merely because he suspected a few of them of revealing his criminal plans to raid yet a different tribe. Mohammad was a hypocrite who only used politeness as a means to stab his victims in the back after lulling them into a false security.

I am Muslim and proud of being so. I am totally against violence and killing as these are not the ways we were asked to follow to win any case. We were asked to argue any case softly and by leading good examples.

meanwhile I am 100% against any one who insults our prophet, I wonder how ignorant those people are. Have they ever tried to read about him. Do they accept insulting their prophets whom we as Muslims are ordered to respect, honor, and believe in them.

Have they looked at the ages where Prohet Mohammad PBUH followers spread justice and peace across the world.

Irrationality and fanatism is the source of all evil, whether it is the act of Muslim, Jew or Christian. We can not condemn all Muslims for the act of some fanatics as we can not condemn all Christians for the deeds of fanatic Christians.

      @Mohamed Hussien
Why do muslims keep lying about their religiion? Look, Quran 4:34 says: ...a man should not be asked why he beat his wife.
Now, would a prophet really condone wife beating. When ur daughter is married to a muslim man, and she comes to u 1 day with bruises on her face, i'm sure u'll say its ok cause of quran 4:34 right?
How about if u have a 6 yr old daugther and if muham_mad wanted to marry her and consummate the marriage too, would u give ur daughter to him? You do know the story of Aisha right? If not look on wikipedia.
No amount of lies will convince educated people that muham_mad as not a prophet, but a pedophile and womanizer among other things.

For all of those that quote The Quraan 4:34. Here is the full quote "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand."

I invite all people that still hold on to a religious belief to google then watch....
The Munk debate: Resolved, is religion a force for good in the world?
Between; Tony Blair and Christopher Hitchens
I find that christians seem to relate to faith in a very narrow view, ie. our religion is passable except for a few whacko culs-so religion is OK, please take the wider view. If you are willing to see beyond your own fantasy, you may understand why atheist reject all deities, we believe in just one less god than you do.
Peace, but it will never be achieved as long as people hold on to their ancient beliefs.

Hmm... am not sure Mao, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler had a peaceful view of the world, as atheists would claim their "belief" would bring.
Am not a prof. of mathematics, but I would guess all killing made by theists compound throughout history would not make it against anyone of those enlighted atheists mentioned above.

So please stop this so 1900-ish old fashioned claim about religion being source of hate – a half decade of atheist ideologies in power and humanity almost vanished. Am not saying atheist are murderers, but do not argument about theists being fanatics because the argument would turn multiplied against you.

Now, can't we just get along and live in peace – and debate with grace?!

Ok, let me list three, Napolean, Alexander the Great, and Ghengish Khan, were out to conquer the world, if they could, just as your three dictators. So if a religious person/ leader or an atheist leader is power mad and wants to establish his ultimate power the religion or lack there of should not matter. The number of people slaughtered in either case scenario matters for what reason, of course your modern guys had more effective methods/weapons for killimg.

John, I am not a fan of Islam especially, Christianity beyond "do unto others" is pretty ugly, but they have not gone around killing people because they got butt hurt, hurt feelings etc., Christians don't kill their children for being Western, or dating someone. I can take seriously a man that wondered around the desert on his much older wife's money, and then taking a wife that was 6 years old. That is called pedophilia. After that the guy is just gross.

Harmony with the West? What fairy-tale history books have you been reading? Islam has been spreading through conquest since its founding.

      Oh the occupation of Jerusalem.

The funny thing is Muslims have no problem with right by conquest when they are the ones doing the conquering.

Nonsense. Islam has essentially been at war with the West, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia and sub-Sarahan Afirca, since Mohmamed invented the religion. I agree that the article misses the point though. This isn't about the Islamic reluctance to protray the face of Mohammed. This is really about the Islamic injuction to stifle discussion of Mohammed's faults, and crimes, through the use of violence.

Look around my brainwashed cowboy friends. There's no Muslim under your bed. You're being screwed by your government who's owned by a handful of corporations. I mourn the death of the ambassador, but you need to cool down the militancy, the hatred, and the foreign interference of your government in partnership with Israhell.

"""Islam has been around for 14 centuries, most of which, there were harmony with the West."""

Whoa, whoa WHOA! This is not true. Not true AT ALL. Liar liar pants on fire.

What do you think the Crusades were all about? Hint: They were reactions to centuries of Muslim aggression and occupation. Did you know that Muslims had actually conquered portions of Europe (Italy, Spain, and France) before they were finally beaten back?

Ever heard of Christopher Columbus? Do you know WHY he was searching for a new route to the Far East when he found North America by accident? Hint: He was trying to avoid the – you guessed it – MUSLIMS!!!

Ever heard of Thomas Jefferson? He knew a thing or two about Muslim aggression, too. Read about the Barbary Wars.

Obama has been inflaming Muslims by constantly boasting about killing Osama Bin Laden. It was mentioned TWENTY ONE times at the Democrat convention. The demonstrators in Egypt were shouting "We are all Osamas, Obama"!

Muslim interest in Jerusalem is only as a conquering force. They are interested in only diminishing the enemy religions, the same way a conquering force would destroy temples and churches, attempting to increase the religion's reach and numbers by attrition of the competing religion. They wanted Palestine because there were Jews there. The other religions motives are no more honorable, so let's lay all the cards on the table...

Time to clean house in Libya. Leave no loose ends. The rebels have been allowed freedom to roam around there armed to the hilt. That is always a mistake. If Libya can't clean out that infestation then send in the special forces from the west to do it.

    STOP THE PRESSES:–>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

TO MY SISTER AND BROTHER MUSLIMS: THERE IS A PEACEFUL AND EASY SOLUTION AND IT TAKES LESS THAN TWO MINUTES OF YOUR TIME.

From the studies of Armstrong, Rushdie, Hirsi Ali, Richardson and Bayhaqi––

The Five Steps To Deprogram 1400 Years of Islamic Myths:

(Analogous steps are available at your request for deprogramming the myths of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Paganism..)

( –The Steps take less than two minutes to finish- simply amazing, two minutes to bring peace and rationality to over one billion lost souls- Priceless!!!)

    Are you ready?

Using "The 77 Branches of Islamic "faith" a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi as a starting point. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true "faith" (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings." i.e. a nice summary of the Koran and Islamic beliefs.

The First Five of the 77 Branches:

    "1. Belief in Allah"

aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc. should be added to your self-cleansing neurons.

"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."

Evolution and the Big Bang or the "Gi-b G-nab" (when the universe starts to recycle) are more plausible and the "akas" for Allah should be included if you continue to be a "crea-tionist".

"3. To believe in the existence of angels."

A major item for neuron cleansing. Angels/de-vils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hitt-ites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc. No "pretty/ug-ly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as f–airies and "tin–ker be-lls". Modern de-vils are classified as the de-mons of the de-mented.

"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."

Another major item to delete. There are no books written in the spirit state of Heaven (if there is one) just as there are no angels to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.

Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the un-educated masses in line. Today we call them for-tune tellers.

Prophecies are also invali-dated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.

"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone."

Mohammed spent thirty days "fasting" (the Ramadan legend) in a hot cave before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a neuron deletion of #5. #5 is also the major source of Islamic vi-olence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallu-cinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.

Walk these Five Steps and we guarantee a complete recovery from your Islamic ways!!!!

Unfortunately, there are not many Muslim commentators/readers on this blog so the "two-minute" cure is not getting to those who need it. If you have a Muslim friend, send him a copy and help save the world.

    Desensitizing the "Prophet"/"Fortune Teller" Mohammed:

Mohammed was an illiterate, womanizing, lust and greed-driven, warmongering, hallucinating Arab, who also had embellishing/hallucinating/plagiarizing scribal biographers who not only added "angels" and flying chariots to the koran but also a militaristic agenda to support the plundering and looting of the lands of non-believers.

This agenda continues as shown by the ma-ssacre in Mumbai, the as-sas-sinations of Bhutto and Theo Van Gogh, the conduct of the seven Muslim doctors in the UK, the 9/11 terrorists, the 24/7 Sunni suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the 24/7 Shiite suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the Islamic bombers of the trains in the UK and Spain, the Bali crazies, the Kenya crazies, the Pakistani “koranics”, the Palestine suicide bombers/rocketeers, the Lebanese nutcases, the Taliban nut jobs, the Ft. Hood follower of the koran, and the Filipino “koranics”.

And who funds this muck and stench of terror? The warmongering, Islamic, Shiite terror and torture theocracy of Iran aka the Third Axis of Evil and also the Sunni "Wannabees" of Saudi Arabia.

    Current crises:

The Sunni-Shiite blood feud (e.g. Iraq and also Syria) and the warmongering, womanizing (11 wives), hallucinating founder.

We wont have peace over there till we have a significant body count.

I estimate the tipping point might be around 60 to 80 million dead.

We aren't even close to slowing this down from a military perspective.

Maybe Netenyahu can up the antey?

All I hope is that if this has to be WW3, and that if we are forced to get in it, we do so with the intention of winning an absolute victory.

I often wonder if this is not divide and conquer

Shia vs Sunni. Whip the flames of tribal war and have our enemies slaughter each other.

Kind of like the republicans versus the democrats, but with suicide bombers and artillery shells.

I have actually lost count of how many of these societies have significant ongoing civil unrest and violence.

Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, and Detroit to just name a few 🙂

If we can keep the madness localized it is almost to good to be true for the western powers!

Alas, these things have a way of getting out of control.

Is this ambassador todays Arch Duke Ferdinand?

      Only time will tell.

To stop them, you have to kill them. The trouble with that is that there won't be enough virgins for them in paradise. Start breeding more camels, and that would be a grand substi.tiute. The prohet was a sick man, kinda like Jos. Smith was.

      They deserve each other.

  19. Irrational Exuberance

    Sorry not buying it.
Islam has hundreds of pages "depicting" Mohammad. But they do so in a positive way. So no problem at all.

It is criticism of Islam and Mohammad that brings on the pain.

If you dare criticize Islam of the Mohammad you risk fire, or stones, or bullets be hurled your way. Or maybe someone else, as Libya demonstrated when the religious get angry they aren't real good at confining their anger to the subject of their anger.

Unless that anger was just at freedom of speech, which some of the graffiti seems to suggest.

      September 12, 2012 at 1:00 pm |
    • Just a John

Buddhism as most religions has split into many factions. They do espouse non-violence, but tend to go to war with and slaughter their Hindu neighbours from time to time (again not most Buddhist groups, just some of the crazies).

      September 12, 2012 at 1:08 pm |
    • *facepalm*

@John – agreed, there are definitely plenty of violent Buddhists. That doesn't necessarily mean that Buddhism contains violents tenets. But with a religion that functions more like a philosophy, divergent ideologies is expected. There is definitely a stark contrast with the reveal religions such as the Abrahamic religions whose texts are flooded with violence. I certainly can't think of a non-violent religion that utilizes a standard, revealed text.
