Ambassador's killing shines light on Muslim sensitivities around Prophet Mohammed

By Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) – Violence over depictions of the Prophet Mohammed may mystify many non-Muslims, but it speaks to a central tenet of Islam: that the Prophet was a man, not God, and that portraying him threatens to lead to worshiping a human instead of Allah.

“It's all rooted in the notion of idol worship,” says Akbar Ahmed, who chairs the Islamic Studies department at American University. “In Islam, the notion of God versus any depiction of God or any sacred figure is very strong."

“The Prophet himself was aware that if people saw his face portrayed by people, they would soon start worshiping him,” Ahmed says. “So he himself spoke against such images, saying ‘I’m just a man.’”

The prohibition against such portrayals was on stark display Tuesday, as mobs in Egypt and Libya attacked U.S. compounds in response to a film that vilifies the Prophet Mohammed, who founded Islam in the 7th century. The attack on the U.S. personnel in Benghazi, Libya, was orchestrated by extremists who used the protests as a diversion, U.S. sources told CNN Wednesday.

The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi killed J. Christopher Stevens, Washington's ambassador to Libya, as well as three other Americans at the compound.

The film that’s believed to have inspired the violence depicts the Prophet Mohammed as a child molester, womanizer and ruthless killer, going a big step beyond violating the basic Muslim prohibition against depicting the Prophet, even in a favorable light.

There are questions about who is behind the movie. Initial reports identified a supposedly Israeli-American real-estate developer named Sam Bacile, but it's unclear if that person even exists. A member of the film's production staff told CNN that the producer's name was listed as Abenob Nakoula Basseley.

In Sunni mosques, the largest branch of the faith, there are no images of people of any kind. The spaces are often decorated with verses from the Quran.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Mohamed Magid, an imam who leads the Islamic Society of North America, says the Muslim prohibition on depicting prophets extends to Jesus and Moses, who Islam treats as prophets.

“Pictures and images are prohibited from being worshiped,” Magid says.

There have been historical instances of Muslims depicting the Prophet, says Omid Safi, a religious studies professor at the University of North Carolina who has studied the issue.

"We have had visual depictions of the Prophet in the form of miniatures and pictures in the Iranian context, the Turkish context, the central Asian Context,” says Safi, author of the book "Memories of Mohammed." “The one significant context where depictions of the Prophet have not been image-related has been in the Arab context.”

“As you go farther east, away from the Arabian Peninsula, you find depictions of the prophet in art,” said Johari Abdul-Malik, the imam for Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia. He noted that images of the teachings of the prophet were sometimes used to bridge gaps in illiteracy.

But even depictions of the Prophet by Muslim artists has been a sensitive issue.

Akbar, a former Pakistani ambassador to the United Kingdom, says that Muslim artists in the 15th and 16th centuries would depict the Prophet but took pains to avoid drawing his face.

“It would be as if he was wearing a veil on his face, so the really orthodox could not object – that was the solution they found," Akbar says.

In a  Muslim film called “The Messenger,” which circulated throughout the Muslim world in the 1970s and 1980s, the Prophet is depicted only as a shadow.

Adbul-Malik said that in the Quran, there is “no statement from the prophet requesting his image not be recorded.” The passages relating to a ban on creating images of the prophets come from the hadith, recordings of the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed and his closest companions. The hadith is not viewed on the same plane as the Quran but as important to understanding the Quran.

Scholars of religion say Muslim opposition to portraying Mohammed wasn’t generally violated in earlier centuries because of a gulf between much of the Muslim world and the West.

In the age of globalization, non-Muslims and critics of Islam have felt free to depict Mohammed, including in offensive ways.

In 2006, a Danish cartoonist’s depiction of the Prophet wearing a bomb as a turban with a lit fuse provoked demonstrations across the world.

Akbar says that until relatively recently, depictions of Jesus tended to be reverential, but Christianity has had a decades-long head start in dealing with negative portrayals of Jesus in film and art.

Who the F cares what they think! If they truly understood their religion they'd know it does not depict violence as the answer. Ridiculous trying to make sense of some radical ideology; and that's all it is, ideology, not theology.

What is the basis for the prohibition against depiction of Mohammad? Specifically, is it from the Koran or some other source?

    September 12, 2012 at 1:41 pm |

Ive not seen it in the Quran. The biggest issue that what the west depect is a lie and that is what offends them.. Historically the Prophet himself was very polite, extremely forgiving. His love and affection and service to his people won the hearts and minds of the people so soo badly that they cannot forget him and they cannot take anything against him.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding after a YouTube trailer of his movie attacking Islam's prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three American members of his staff were killed.

The two-hour movie, "Innocence of Muslims," cost $5 million to make and was financed with the help of more than 100 Jewish donors, said Bacile, who wrote and directed it.
    ~~
If they (this Bacile and his minions) exactly knew the consequences, why they still did it?
Would it be better if the money was spent on something else -rather than- let say, offending certain 1.500.000.000 people
    world wide?

Oh wait, all the charade is intentional.

Obviously Ethiopia you are not a Christian. The new testament is the Bible for real Christians and you wont find any references to hurting others in there! The old testament was written to the jewish people and oh how unbelievers like to make some of its statements work for Christians. Real Christians listen to Jesus and He said "Love God with all you are and love your neighbor as yourself, that doesnt mean go and hurt people does it? Jesus himself only preached, peace and love although he did warn of judgement for those who did evil, he never ever said to hurt anyone! Repent and believe and you will be saved! And when I say believe I mean in the sense of following Jesus and becoming like him not just saying you believe and going to church once a week, that my friend is not a real Christian!

Look at the behavior of the people of Islam when others attack their religion! Is this the way Muslims are when Jesus (another Muslim prophet)is attacked? NO, they persecute Jesus and his followers! This is why no Muslim will inherit heaven! When Muslims put others above Jesus they surely will see in the end that it is Jesus' way to inherit the kingdom of heaven and THE ONLY WAY!

Jesus–”Go not into the way of the Gentiles” (Matt. 10:5)

and “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 15:24),

and “…for salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22)

Any idea what this means ??

      September 12, 2012 at 1:46 pm |
    • DAN

QB, please read further John 5:24 and study the New Testament. You will learn then that Jesus came for all!

      September 12, 2012 at 1:56 pm |
    • QB

Firstly these verses are from the NT
secondly if you feel there are verses stating he came for all, wouldn't that be a contradiction?..

Anyhow reading more brings this out

Matthew 10:34. "Do not think that I (Jesus) came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.35 "For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law';36 "and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.'

      September 12, 2012 at 1:59 pm |
    • QB

BTW,, John 5:24 further proves the point.. Jesus resists helping the women because she is not a Jew. Finally she begs and he does a favour. I say he should have helped her anyway, on humanitarian grounds at least but he resisted so you'd know it loud and clear , that he is there for the JEWS..

Imagine if prophet Muhammad had siad he is here for the Arabs ,, how would it sound if his followers said he were for everyone.. Im sure in this case youd know what ;;for the Arabs;; means...

      Hi Dan,

"Look at the behavior of the people of Islam when others attack their religion! Is this the way Muslims are when Jesus (another Muslim prophet)is attacked?"
How many people stormed american embassies wordlwide? 200, 2000?
How many muslims in the world? 1,500 000 000.
So yes, look at the people of Islam, the 1,499 998 000 you chose to ignore to make your bogoted point.

" NO, they persecute Jesus and his followers! " Is it so? Until the 19th century there were no muslims in Western Europe, do you know why? Because christians did persecute and killed muslims like in Spain.
Look at the muslim world, until this day you find christians, there have always been christians and churches in the muslim world, the contrary cannot be said...

"This is why no Muslim will inherit heaven! When Muslims put others above Jesus they surely will see in the end that it is Jesus' way to inherit the kingdom of heaven and THE ONLY WAY!"
Are muslims wrong to pray directly to the God Jesus was calling upon and praying too? No one but The Creator is above the Prophets that are mere human beings born of a woman, who drank, ate and went to the loo...
And by the way, Jesus, peace be upon him, looked as if he was the one crucified but he was not, God did not allow it. Jesus will come back and will say to you and fellow christians:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
      Matthew 7:21 – 23

And guess who said the following according to you:
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

3 And why behold the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but consider not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how will thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
      Matthew 7:3-5

And you see that because of Jesus there are many who will be saved from the conflicts that rage in ones heart, mind and soul! Jesus came in love for all humanity as the only son of God to die on the cross so that all can be saved through faith in Him as the Messiah! Take Him in your heart, mind and soul, share in His love for all people and you too will be saved!

      September 12, 2012 at 2:17 pm |
    • DAN

There are many churches and Christians bombed and killed respectfully, in many parts of the Muslim world!

      September 12, 2012 at 2:23 pm |
    • Omar

" Jesus came in love for all humanity" I agree, so did the last messenger of God,uhammad, peace and blessing be upon them and on all the prophets.

" as the only son of God to die on the cross so that all can be saved through faith in Him as the Messiah! "
Why is there no mention of that in the old testament? Why Jesus, peace be upon him, did not teach it?

In the name of the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, please find out for yourself about the Tast Testament, the Holy Quran, if you reaaly love God, do it, even if it is only to know more about the beliefs of 1 out 4 people walking the Earth.
We do love and respect the Messiah Jesus son of Mary peace be upon them both but we love more the Creator, the one Jesus prayed to in the cave of Gethsemane.

      Peace

Jesus–”Go not into the way of the Gentiles” (Matt. 10:5)

and “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 15:24),

and “…for salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22)

Any idea what this means ??

Since you have no idea what you are talking about let me enlighten you. Jesus did come for the Jews specifically as they have been and always will be Gods chosen people the reason he treated the woman that came to him for help in such a way is because she was a non-believer most likely an idol worshiper of baal or one of the other cults of the time. Jesus was there for the lost sheep of Israel, he also speaks of his other fold meaning Gentiles in another part of the new testament-John 10:16-And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd-this is believe to refer to the Christians who would be established after his death and resurection. Of course then the Apostle Paul who Jesus appeared to was sent to the Gentiles specifically.

      @qb

Matthew 10:34. "Do not think that I (Jesus) came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.35 "For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law';36 "and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household

This refers to the Christian way meaning that Christians would experience persecution for their beliefs and for example one person in one family would be converted to Christianity and the other members would not and sometime the others would even turn them over to the authorities to be tortured or put to death. It never implies anything violent on the part of the Christian you simply didnt grasp the meaning because you are obviously not familiar with text...

dan and man of a few words
u guys r discussing things like jesus and heaven which is based on assumption. Jesus probably never lived and is a made up character as there is not historical evidence for him (the stories about Jesus were written 200+ yrs after his supposed death). No one has seen heaven, nor hell. Yet u guys talk fervently about these places like they exist. This makes me laugh. How come no christian has ever come back from the dead to tell u guys or any1 else how wonderful a time they r having in heaven or hell?? have u ever wondered that? the obvious answer is cause they r dead and the evidence shows that there is nothing after death. Religion thrives on people's fear of death by telling them fairy tales of places like heaven and hell and people like u guys fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
The Bible is not true. It has many errors that is shown by since to be wrong. The basis of christianity is: Jesus came to save us from the sins committed by adam and eve so that we may be saved by the grace of god. But the adam and eve story is made up! Hence Jesus who is godly came to save us from nothing. Also with Jesus having godly powers he should've known that the adam and eve story is a myth! Hence Jesus is not god.
I'll give u one obvious falsehood from the adam and eve story that sticks out like a sore thumb to show u that it is false: On the third day, god had grass/plants growing. On the 4th day, he created the sun. The bronze age nomads who made up the adam and eve story (or borrowed from earlier stories like the epic of gilgamesh) obviously did not know that plants need the sun to survive (photosynthesis). So this huge error exists in genesis.
Another big error in genesis: We know and learn in school that the sun formed before the earth. THats why all the planets including the earth revolve around the sun cause the sun was there first. But again in genesis, god creates the earth on the 1st day and the sun on the 4th day. Big blunder again!
All these errors are abundant in genesis not because god's scribe who wrote genesis was dyslexic that day, but because its all made up. Therefore, the Bible's 'facts' cannot be treated as true even when it claims Jesus is the way to heaven, etc...

Hmmm. lemme see, there's a Muslim prohibition against showing images of Myhamhead and if it's violated they rampage and kill....

Isn't there a Muslim prohibition against killing? How come no one there rampages and riots when they break THAT prohibition?

Dang, you religious folks can't even follow your own teachings! Could it be that religion is really politics? hmmm

Well, Muslims would tell you that their religion does not let them kill innocents. Sadly, however, innocents is defined to include only Muslims who are too stupid to do anything but follow the instructions of an equally stupid cleric. Everyone else is a suitable target and the Koran permits them to be killed with impunity and without guilt.

I go around greeting everyone with "hello mother--", and occasionally get a bloody nose. What a surprise?

The thing Muslims are trying to guard against – worshipping a man instead of God – has already happened in Christianity. After growing up in a fundamentalist Kansas town and seeing how corrupted the church is, I know this for sure. I've heard Christians begin prayers with "Oh Lord Jesus..." and I've heard many pray to Jesus instead of God. I'm very grateful to God (not Jesus, who was an extraordinary man but still a man) that I live in a country that allowed me to leave these people and move to a diverse and respectful big city.

Accordingly to Islam, you are a true Christian.. Jesus himself prayed to God and so did his followers. May God guide and protect you sister 🙂

Julia and others: Pray to god. Yes, u assume god exists. How do u know this? Why can't god just show himself/herself/itself so we dont have to doubt his/her/its existence?
The reason god cannot be seen, felt, or has any impact on the world which cannot be explained by natural means, is cause god doesn't exist.

William... The chursh has killed thousands for this reason... Pick up European history and have a look.. Jesus aside, they locked up and killed the guy who said the Earth is round (Galileo)

Burning of witches , boiling disobedient kids, killing anyone disobeying the priest was the norm of a day. Trouble is you have been on Earth for how much 40 years????

Pick up a history book yourself. Galileo was placed under what we would consider house arrest today and he was not killed by the church

Only because he recanted. If he had not, he would have been tortured and killed.

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Funny no one mentions who orchestrated all this charade after all.

So, basically, this is just a big, violent pissing contest to see who's fairy tale is best? Nice.

  20. Just wondering

Is this really about Islam and Allah and such? Maybe it has something to do with the real reasons for the western interventions in Lybia, Egypt, Syria etc. Can it be that maybe some EU countries want a greater share of Lybian oil? Can it be that the Muslim protest are orchestrated to be the cover for a cold blooded assassination, a signal to the US regime? Are all US diplomats so vulnerable, why did the marines fail to protect the no. 1 official in that country? Too many coincidences. Too close on 9/11...

Islam came 1400 years ago. Had all this evil really been coming from Islam or Allah , you would have seen Muslims behind www1 and www2. Global black slavery, elimination of Red Indians, Elimination of Native south Africans, elimination of Native Australians, Nwking Heroshema Nagasaki, Global British theft etc etc..

Too many coincidences? Your digging too deep. This was a typical response by Muslem believers, but because it happened in Libya it was out of control. Now CCN headlines tell us that "experts" say it was an El Qida attack. Rubbish.
