Pope Benedict begins trip to Lebanon amid Mideast protests, violence

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Beirut, Lebanon, on Friday for a previously scheduled trip as anti-American protests and violence spurred by an anti-Islamic film roiled the Mideast, including in Lebanon.

Police killed one person in Tripoli, Lebanon, on Friday after a group of armed men stormed a restaurant amid protests in the city, Lebanese security forces told CNN.

"I have come to Lebanon as a pilgrim of peace, as a friend of God and as a friend of men,” Benedict said in a public address Friday afternoon at Beirut’s airport, where he was greeted by Lebanese President Michel Sleiman.

“Looking beyond your country, I also come symbolically to all the countries of the Middle East as a pilgrim of peace, as a friend of God and as a friend of all the inhabitants of all the countries of the region, whatever their origins and beliefs,” Benedict said as he began a three-day trip to Lebanon.

About 40 armed men were spotted among hundreds of protesters in Tripoli on Friday, Lebanese officials said.

Anti-American rage sparked by an online film that insulted Islam's prophet boiled over Friday among Muslims in at least half a dozen countries, as the United States stepped up security at diplomatic posts across the Middle East.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Aware that protests were planned for Friday - the Muslim holy day - the United States beefed up security at its embassies and consulates across the Middle East.

The unrest began Tuesday when outrage over a 14-minute American-made online video that mocks the Prophet Mohammed as a womanizer, child molester and ruthless killer sparked riots at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Four America consulate staffers were killed, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

U.S. officials suspect that a group sympathetic to al Qaeda used the protests over the film as cover for the complex and well-coordinated attack on the consulate.

In Lebanon, Benedict praised the Lebanese people for providing a model on how believers of various religions could coexist peacefully, calling it an “equilibrium” that is “extremely delicate.”

“Sometimes it seems about to snap like a bow which is overstretched or submitted to pressures which are too often partisan, even selfish, contrary and extraneous to Lebanese harmony and gentleness,” Benedict said.

    At Atheists:

To think that you are accomplishing anything here is either a lie or just foolishness. You all just like hearing yourself talk. That's it. You are not persuading any Christians or anyone else.

The battle for America will not be won beating up Christians on this blog. That is akin to bullying retarded people. And if you are morally sound, you know better.

ScepticStill – Atheists have taken what they think is the other side of the coin without any reason other than rebellion.

      @Just Me,
I'll be honest... I really don't know what a spiritual battle is. Can you give me a description or a definition?

How are we militant. You are the one saying we kill people.Your logic is very flawed.

      September 14, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
    • Just Me

OOO – SPIRITUAL BATTLE – spiritual warfare is the cosmic war of good versus evil: its battles are fought daily between God and Satan; between the Christian Church and the world system ruled by our spiritual enemy; and within every child of God, between the Holy Spirit and the lusts of the carnal flesh. The clear meanings of good and evil, as defined by God rather than man, are revealed within the verses of the Holy Bible and the life of Jesus Christ.

Good afternoon, "Just Me". Although you post is intriguing, I am afraid that it might contain some falsehoods. I need to clarify some of the incomplete ideas in your statements to determine the severity of your falsehoods.

You said "The battle for America will not be won beating up Christians on this blog. That is akin to bullying retarded people."
This is perplexing since many Christians are mentally retarded. What is different from "beating up" and "bullying" when applied to the same group?

Also, you wrote: "Atheists have taken what they think is the other side of the coin without any reason other than rebellion."
What is on each side of the coin?

I'm confident that the answers to my questions will enable you to determine who you arrived at one or more possible falsehoods, "Just Me".

The truth shall be given to all of us at the day of Judgment. No need to take my word, warning comes before destruction and it Jesus Christ who shall give you the very evidence that you refused to accept while being alive and by then, it will be too late for the unbeliever and the religious people who has taught false doctrines.

      September 14, 2012 at 4:35 pm |

Jesus commanded the apostles to preach the gospel true, and make disciples. All other battles are not important, and if they become a priority, they are idolatry. Christians are to die for the truth, but not hasten an unbeliever's damnation. The only exception is the madman in the village.

Hi, MDAT. yes, I just returned. Evolution is a lie. It hasn't even been able to prove that something came out of nothing and it is very foolish to even think that we evolved by apes and it leave out how the rest of the wild beasts in the air, land, and sea came from.

      September 14, 2012 at 4:08 pm |
    • MDAT

We evolved from apes?do you know any evolutionary science? We evolved for neanderthals. We share a common ancestor. We are very close to primates in DNA also.

    • I wonder

      WD,
"people that want no accountability in this life"

We take all of the accountability - ALL of it. We are on our own here... and there is not a shred of evidence for a "hereafter". I know that's too scary for you, though.

      September 14, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
    • Just Me

MDAT – Well, dang it, will you atheists make up your mind where we evolved from? My DNA runs all the way from the very first man that God created.....ADAM, therefore, I am a human being, not some one who evolved from any kind of animal. Again, where did the rest of the creatures come from, neanderthals too?

      September 14, 2012 at 4:16 pm |
    • hawaiiguest

      @Just Me

It doesn't seem like you really understand what evolution is.

      September 14, 2012 at 4:17 pm |

Neanderthals evolved from another evolutionary ancestor. We have 50,000 genetic variations.Could that come from one man?I don't think so.

The Pope is not the vicar of Christ but rather a false apostle and a servant of the spirit of this world, who deceives all the followers of his church (Matthew 24:24; 2 Cor. 11:13-15)

For a better understanding of the history and doctrines of the Catholic Church and all its deceptions, we invite you to read the articles ‘The Mystery Babylon’ and Popes and the Princes of This World’ listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain how and by whom this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9.

Religion has never been the actual reason for war, money and power is always the reason. People and governments sometimes scapegoat religion or use it as additional motivation for the massive, but that is not religion's fault and generally not an accepted part of many religious doctrines. As always, warring governments rely on the least educated, most easily influenced, and physically strongest members of society to do their dirty work and will use anything they can find to try to motivate them.

    • Reality

Catholics need to read the studies of the contemporary NT scholars especially those specializing in the historic Jesus.

A quick summary of the findings:

There indeed was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
      Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

Added details are available upon written request.

As requested from the followers of the holy spirit:

Saving Christians to include Catholics and Mormons from the Infamous Resurrection Con/

From that famous passage: In 1 Corinthians 15 St. Paul reasoned, "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith."

Even now Catholic/Christian professors of theology are questioning the bodily resurrection of the simple, preacher man aka Jesus.

      To wit;

From a major Catholic university's theology professor’s grad school white-board notes:

"Heaven is a Spirit state or spiritual reality of union with God in love, without earthly – earth bound distractions.
Jesus and Mary's bodies are therefore not in Heaven.

Most believe that it to mean that the personal spiritual self that survives death is in continuity with the self we were while living on earth as an embodied person.

Again, the physical Resurrection (meaning a resuscitated corpse returning to life), Ascension (of Jesus' crucified corpse), and Assumption (Mary's corpse) into heaven did not take place.

The Ascension symbolizes the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of the Church.

Only Luke records it. (Luke mentions it in his gospel and Acts, i.e. a single attestation and therefore historically untenable). The Ascension ties Jesus' mission to Pentecost and missionary activity of Jesus' followers.

The Assumption has multiple layers of symbolism, some are related to Mary's special role as "Christ bearer" (theotokos). It does not seem fitting that Mary, the body of Jesus' Virgin-Mother (another biblically based symbol found in Luke 1) would be derived by worms upon her death. Mary's assumption also shows God's positive regard, not only for Christ's male body, but also for female bodies." "

"In three controversial Wednesday Audiences, Pope John Paul II pointed out that the essential characteristic of heaven, hell or purgatory is that they are states of being of a spirit (angel/demon) or human soul, rather than places, as commonly perceived and represented in human language. This language of place is, according to the Pope, inadequate to describe the realities involved, since it is tied to the temporal order in which this world and we exist. In this he is applying the philosophical categories used by the Church in her theology and saying what St. Thomas Aquinas said long before him."
      http://eternal-word.com/library/PAPALDOC/JP2HEAVN.HTM

The Vatican quickly embellished this story with a lot CYAP.

With respect to rising from the dead, we also have this account:

An added note: As per R.B. Stewart in his introduction to the recent book, The Resurrection of Jesus, Crossan and Wright in Dialogue,

      p.4

"Reimarus (1774-1778) posits that Jesus became sidetracked by embracing a political position, sought to force God's hand and that he died alone deserted by his disciples. What began as a call for repentance ended up as a misguided attempt to usher in the earthly political kingdom of God. After Jesus' failure and death, his disciples stole his body and declared his resurrection in order to maintain their financial security and ensure themselves some standing."

      p.168. by Ted Peters:

Even so, asking historical questions is our responsibility. Did Jesus really rise from the tomb? Is it necessary to have been raised from the tomb and to appear to his disciples in order to explain the rise of early church and the transcription of the bible? Crossan answers no, Wright answers, yes. "

So where are the bones"? As per Professor Crossan's analyses in his many books, the body of Jesus would have ended up in the mass graves of the crucified, eaten by wild dogs, covered with lime in a shallow grave, or under a pile of stones.

  19. Love Incarnate

IIt really strikes me as interested to read the comments here. Many people here who are angry and bitter about religion have probably, at some point, been hurt by it in the past. There are many who call themselves "Christians" that are not Christians the same could be said for any religion. A Christian would not do anything but share the love of God and Jesus with others and be love to others. Anybody who claims to be a Christian but embodies anything different, I propose, is not a Christian. Jesus came to give life and give it to the full (John 10:10). Having faith in Jesus brings me to complete fulfillment and meaning of why I was created. I used to have a time when I was angry at God and Jesus but in reality I couldn't see past my own sin. Jesus dealt with that and calls me clean. New. Pure. Holy. That's what He offers to every one who surrenders their lives to Him and puts their trust in Him.

That being said, I don't see how this would could be any more paradise without Christians, or religion. This world is corrupt and is wasting away. The natural tendency of man is to digress into selfishness. This means that things will just continually get worse. The only way for things to improve is to be selfless. The only way to be truly selfless is to give your life up for the sake of others, laying down your own wants and desires to the betterment of others around you. It is impossible for men to achieve this apart from Jesus because our nature is selfish. Perhaps we would do it for recognition, profit, to feel good, etc but that ultimately still fills OUR needs. Turning everything to Jesus allows us to pour out our lives in such a manner that it doesn't matter if we ever receive anything in return. We have our hope and meaning in Jesus, not what we receive from others around us.

My friends, you say this place is better with Christians and probably Jesus as well. You are sorely mistaken. That whole in your heart and life that you are trying to fill with other things was meant to be filled by your relationship with Jesus Christ. He came to be Savior and Lord and bring you about to being who you were created to be. I implore you to accept Jesus Christ, surrender yourselves to Him, and receive what you've been longing for all your lives; complete and utter fulfillment as a human being. Receive His love and be filled to the full!

I notice a huge difference between this explanation and the violent uprising right now in the Middle East. Each life is very short. Those who want to tear down an understanding of God are not those who will make life better. The resurrection was not a matter of showing off; only a few witnessed the empty tomb, and only a little more than a hundred witnessed the ascension. It isn't a big parade, or hyper-reality, but something that is given freely to you. You don't have to join the Pope's church, or a particular church, but if you think that infinity does not include infinite intelligence, then all you are doing is looking in a mirror, not seeking education, enlightenment, or the wonders of science.

You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remin; that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it you. These things I command you, that you love one another. If the world hate you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own; but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. John 15:16-19
