Newly revealed Coptic fragment has Jesus making reference to 'my wife'By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor (CNN) - A newly revealed, centuries-old papyrus fragment suggests that some early Christians might have believed Jesus was married. The fragment, written in Coptic, a language used by Egyptian Christians, says in part, "Jesus said to them, 'My wife ..." Harvard Divinity School Professor Karen King announced the findings of the 1 1/2- by 3-inch honey-colored fragment on Tuesday in Rome at the International Association for Coptic Studies. King has been quick to add this discovered text "does not, however, provide evidence that the historical Jesus was married," she wrote in a draft of her analysis of the fragment set to appear in the January edition of Harvard Theological Review. The divinity school has posted a draft of King's article to which AnneMarie Luijendijk, an associate professor of religion at Princeton University, contributed. "This fragment, this new piece of papyrus evidence, does not prove that (Jesus) was married, nor does it prove that he was not married. The earliest reliable historical tradition is completely silent on that. So we're in the same position we were before it was found. We don't know if he was married or not," King said in a conference call with reporters.
"What I'm really quick to say is to cut off people who would say this is proof that Jesus was married because historically speaking, it's much too late to constitute historical evidence," she continued. "I'm not saying he was, I'm not saying he wasn't. I'm saying this doesn't help us with that question," she continued. Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter In the accounts of Jesus' life in the Bible, there is no mention of his marital status, while the accounts do mention Jesus' mother, father and siblings. The four Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - tell the story of Jesus' birth and early childhood then skip to his short, three-year ministry before detailing his death and resurrection. The idea that Jesus was married is not a new one. In other writings about the life of Jesus from antiquity suggest Jesus may have been married to Mary Magdalene, a disciple who was close to Jesus. Author Dan Brown also used the idea of Jesus being married as a jumping off point for the fictional novel "The Da Vinci Code." King dismissed that notion in her call with reporters. “There’s no indication we have that Jesus was married,” said Darrell Bock, a senior research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. “One could say the text is silent on Jesus’ marital status is because there was nothing to say.” Initial dating for the honey-colored fragment by the team of scholars puts the papyrus piece coming out of the middle of the second century. King is referring to the fragment as the "The Gospel of Jesus' Wife" or "GosJesWife" as a short hand for reference, and noting that the abbreviation does not mean this scrap has the same historical weight as the canonical Gospels. Biblical scholars often use the term gospel to refer to a genre of ancient writings featuring dialogue between Jesus and his disciples, King notes in her paper. The Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Judas are just a few of the ancient accounts about the life of Jesus that Christians do not consider canonical. At the conference, King said another professor suggested the fragment could have come from the text of a homily, or sermon, where the writer was using this phrase as a literary device. She told reporters that while she will consider that as a possibility, the fragment is “probably a gospel. Probably from the second century and most close to the Gospels of Mary, Thomas and Philip.” Bock agreed with the notion that the text fragment shared similarities with those gospels, called the Gnostic Gospels, which were the writings of an early outlier sect of Christians. He said the text could be referring to a "gnostic rite of marriage that is a picture of the church and Jesus, not a real wife." But he added, "it’s a small text with very little context. We don’t know what’s wrapped around it to know what it’s saying.” Bock said it’s likely to be a gnostic text if it proves to be authentic. “The whole text needs vetting. She’s doing the right thing to release it and let scholars take a look at,” he said, adding “it’s a little bit like trying to analyze the game in the first quarter.” “It’s a historical curiosity but doesn’t really tell us who Jesus was,” Bock said. “It’s one small speck of a text in a mountain of texts of about Jesus.” CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories The owner of the fragment has been identified by King as a private collector who has asked to stay anonymous. The owner brought the fragment to Harvard have King examine it in December 2011. King then brought it to the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University. Roger Bagnall, the institute's director and an expert on papyrus, examined it and determined it to be authentic, Bangall confirmed to CNN. Ariel Shisha-Halevy, professor of linguistics at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, who was asked to examine the authenticity, according to the draft of the article, told King via e-mail, “I believe - on the basis of language and grammar - the text is authentic. That is to say, all its grammatical ‘noteworthy’ features, separately or conjointly, do not warrant condemning it as forgery.” Little is known about the origin of the text. Because both sides of the fragment have writing on them, King said it could have come out of a book rather than a scroll. "Just like most of the earliest papyri of the New Testament and other literary and documentary papyri, a fragment this damaged could have come from an ancient garbage heap," the King says building on prior research by Luijendijk. King writes "the importance of the 'Gospel of Jesus’ Wife' lies in supplying a new voice within the diverse chorus of early Christian traditions about Jesus that documents that some Christians depicted Jesus as married." If Jesus was married, so what? In that day, any respectable Jewish guy who was 30 was expected to be married. It obviously did not take away from His message of following God's, peace and loving your enemies. On the other hand, the fact that the Coptic manuscript is dated several hundred years after his resurrection, and neatly fragmented with the writing cut-off in the 'right' place, suggests that the message most likely would have been a heretical Gnostic scripture, something that was fairly common at the time.
Gknow it all gnostics are famous for cutting in line.
And gnot wearing the proper attire.
They haven't realized it yet, but they are just the flip side of the coin shared with the gagnostics.

Does it really matter that much if Jesus was married or not?
#1.Marriage is something holy and sacred, so it doesn't take away from Jesus' holiness if he was married.
#2.Christians believe that Jesus is God in human form. Key word-HUMAN. Jesus did everything that humans do, besides sin (although he was tempted just like all humans are tempted.)
#3.What separated Jesus from being only human, was that he was also God and therefore there was more to him than your "average human" (meaning he also had divine abilities).
#4. So if Jesus was in a holy and sacred marriage, the only thing that would be changed in terms of Christianity, is that maybe the Vatican would have to consider allowing priests to marry (which many would argue should be considered anyway!)
I suspect it means more for church history and the powers that be in the church since the Dark Ages than for the core truths of Christianity as they existed before the time of Constantine. .
as a student of history and topic, it is almost impossible to believe a rabbi the age of jesus would not be married, it is too obvious that the church wanted to diminish the role and power women had until finally releasing the truth about mary magdeline, jesus' probable wife, they needed to create a divine son of god to give the church power especially after the council of nicea
The belief that Jesus is God is not totally correct. Read for instance in John 10:25- Jesus answered them: “I told YOU, and yet YOU do not believe. The works that I am doing in the name of my Father, these bear witness about me. Clearly you can read that Jesus is referring to his father, Jehovah God. So if he is referring to him, how can he be him??
No one makes fun of our faith because it is ours, therefore the true faith. We are 1.5 billion strong, the other 5 billion or so think other wise. There is a remedy for peace and that is for God's booming voice heard around the word saying something. No burning bushes, holy spirits and all other man made stories.

That text could go on to say.....Jesus said...My Wife is the Church, not a building, but those who believe in me, Love God and one another. If Yeshua married, so what? If he didn't, so what? You have to look at the Bible like spam. When you look at what your subscription spam service puts in your spam folder, do you have facts to say in all certainty that it is spam? Probably not. But you know and I know what spam is when we see it. And if you saw a lot of non-spam going into your spam folder, you would stop paying for that subscription service and switch to a different program since it is failing in its job. So I for one, know religion and the bible as spam, regardless of my outlook on a deity. You don't need facts to come to an assessment of things that other people cannot prove – such as religion. But rather, I have had the religious and general education to see where it came from – fable; who affected it over the centuries: politicians, lobbyists, salesmen; and who laps it up: weak-minded, uneducated suckers such as yourself.

What I don't understand is that its a scrap of ancient papyrus written in ancient Egyptian Coptic and the photo legend explains it is original. Why are the words in Anglican and not ancient Hebrew or Arabic.
From what I remember from my courses in Biblical Hebrew and Greek, they appear to be in the capital forms of Greek letters, as are many other Christian texts from that time. I have not had time to look closely enough to see if I recognize any of the words in the text or if they are in a Coptic version that I do not recognize.

The biblical definition of a generation can be found in Psalm 90.

This is confirmed in the Gospel of Matthew.
"Therefore all the generations from Abraham down to David are 14 generations; and from David down to the Babylonian captivity are 14 generations; and from the Babylonian captivity down to messiah, are 14 generations."

Matthew is using the Psalm 90 definitions of Generation in order to tell a specific chronological story.
Even we we put aside that argument, there is further scripture indicating that the Second Coming was expected shortly after Christ's zombification.

Ernesto, I would say that you need to brush up on your science. All of these "Laws" of nature that you are quoting are in fact not laws at all, the physical pricipals that they rely on are true, unless thaer is what would be referred to as "outside influence", such as God. My child can't walk on water, unless I hold her up. People don't rise from the dead, unless someone revives them... Learn your science.

Jesus is the WORD,the message that will survive until the last human walk on earth.
Given all the wars caused in the name of religion, I can certainly see how the use of Jesus would bring about the last human.

I absolutely love that Christian scholars are saying that this text isn't important because it wasn't written contemporary to the life of Jesus.

Wrong. Matthew and John were written by men who were with Jesus for three years. They would certainly know if he was married. Luke did extensive research for his books - Luke and Acts - and lived within the same time period Jesus lived. Mark heard the stories firsthand from Peter and the other disciples, who again, lived with Jesus. Peter, John, James & Jude (both Jesus' brothers) were all with Jesus. None mention a wife, ever. Paul also lived in the same time as Jesus. His conversion happened around AD 38, just a few years after Jesus was crucified. Again, Paul never mentions anything about Jesus being married. The Gnostic gospels were not written by eyewitnesses or even by people who knew someone who knew Jesus. That's why they were not canonized.
It is because this text is much newer than canonical ones, and because it comes from a well known heretical Gnostic sect that was prevalent in Egypt where the text was found. This text is no different from texts like the Nag Hammadi texts.

did jesus tell you directly or did you read that in your bible? or could it have been your mother/father/preacher TAUGHT you that?
