What really enrages Muslims? Twitter knows

By Richard Allen Greene, CNN

What really enrages Muslims?

Having a really good hair day - but no one knows because you wear a hijab.

Not being able to say "Hi" to your friend Jack in a plane - or to call out for your nephew when he gets lost in an airport because his name is "Jihad."

The 72 virgins all turn out to be male.

The tongue-in-cheek answers are part of an explosion of sharply satirical responses on Twitter to a Newsweek magazine cover showing Muslim men in turbans and keffiyahs, apparently rioting, under the banner all caps headline "MUSLIM RAGE."

Thousands of Muslims have made fun of the magazine headline since Monday, when it published a long article by the Somali-born writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Muslim who describes herself as a "combatant in the clash of civilizations."

She links this month's protests against an online film making fun of the Muslim prophet Mohammed - which have resulted in several deaths around the world, including that of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens - to the reaction in 1989 against Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses."

"In 23 years not much has changed," Ali argues. "Islam's rage reared its ugly head again last week.

"The American ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members were murdered by a raging mob in Benghazi, Libya, possibly under the cover of protests against a film mocking the Muslim Prophet Muhammad," Ali writes.

Newsweek's cover puts Ali herself at the heart of the story about "Muslim rage," with the sub-heading: "How I survived it. How we can end it."

Ali, a sharp critic of Islamist violence and of what she sees as Europe's limp response to it, claims that the rioters represent mainstream Muslim views.

"The Muslim men and women (and yes, there are plenty of women) who support - whether actively or passively - the idea that blasphemers deserve to suffer punishment are not a fringe group. On the contrary, they represent the mainstream of contemporary Islam," she argues.

The "many Muslims and ex-Muslims" who "unambiguously condemn" the murders and riots "are marginalized and all too often indirectly held responsible for the very provocation."

But by Tuesday morning, on Twitter at least, far from being marginalized, those Muslims were relentlessly making fun of Newsweek and Ali.

One tweet showed the magazine cover doctored to make the rioting Muslim men look like glam rockers, replacing the headline with "Muslim Rave."

Remi Kanzai riffed on the same theme: "Just add nighttime & glow sticks. It goes from #MuslimRage to #MuslimRave."

Some of the more serious tweets dealt with the discrimination Muslims feel at airports: "When a 'female assist' is called before I even walk through the metal detector."

But many kept the mood light, complaining about work, family, Islamic restrictions on eating pork and drinking wine, or fasting during Ramadan.

"The Dark Knight Rises came out in Ramadan," one complained.

And some aimed their barbs directly at the writer of the provocative piece.

"Whaaaaat?!" Megh demanded. "Ayaan Hirsi Ali doesn't have an active Twitter account?!"

Walk away people, simply walk away ! Pull funding, pull aid, pull military assistance, and walk away before its too late. This scenario will never change, its been going on for centuries and will be going on long after the good ol' USA is laid to rest. I don't support "isolatism" but its time to worry about education, jobs, and the welfare of our own – TODAY !

Actually, anti-Muslim (the people) comments are usually denounced as Islamophobia, Similarly with anti-Jewish-people comments and anti-semitic.

Anti-Islam (the religion) comments, on the other hand are fair game. Just as anti-Jewish-religion comments are.

JOHN UTAH: YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. ITS FUNNY HOW SO MANY AMERICANS ARE HYPOCRITES WHEN IT COMES TO MUSLIMS. THEY LIVE THEIR LIVES EXPECTING OTHERS TO DO TO THEM WHAT THEY DO NOT DO TO OTHERS.

THEY ARE CLUELESS AS TO THE BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SPENT ON WARS FIGHTING MUSLIMS; WHEN THEY CREATED THE WARS AND STEPPED FOOT FIRST ON THEIR LAND. 9/11 (AS BAD AS IT WAS) WAS NOT A FIRST STRIKE BUT A REVENGE ATTACK ON THE COUNTLESS ATTACKS ON MUSLIMS AND THE FUNDING OF ISRAEL. BUT AS USUAL THE CLUELESS AMERICANS (MANY NOT ALL) JUST CONTINUE TO GET THEIR EDUCATION FROM FOXNEWS AND THE RIGHT WINGERS (WHO BY THE WAY CLAIM TO BE RELIGIOUS AND LOVE GOD BUT START ALL THE WARS IN THE WORLD AND PUT OSAMA AND SADDDAM IN POWER) H Y P O C R I T E S !!!

Boy, I wish Jews got a better return for their money donated to AIPAC. We have a president who is just barely christian and will put Israel under the bus anytime (he talks a good talk, but underneath, he hates Israel). It looks like he will win again.

Both the Muslim and Western Press have been excoriating Israel/Jews for years. Anti-Jewish hate is undergoing a new birth (as shows by your post) all over the World.

Jews are blamed for everything. Jews even have horrible examples of their own now in jail, serving life sentences.

I know you like to think (according to the conspiracy sites you visit) that Jews control the World. But from their standpoint, the effort and dollars they spend have been going to waste.

I only wish they were half as successful as you seem to think they are.

Sayyed hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, is demanding that the USA abandon free speech and censor the offending film.
"The distribution of this entire film must be banned by the Americans.... The world should know our anger would not be a passing outburst, but it would be the start of a serious movement that would continue on the level of the Muslim nation to defend the Prophet of God."

Very sensitive issue, but I do think there are a bunch of double standards that a lot of Islamic countries apply to the west. Outrage at a film yet silence on human rights. Religions are equivalent to putting lipstick on a pig. It doesn't matter how much you try to dress it up it's still appealing to magic as the answer to whatever is unknown.
I don't know how the universe came into being...therefore Magic Mike(but no evidence)....
I don't know how life first came into being...therefore Magic Mike(but no evidence)....
      I don't understand consciousness....therefore Magic Mike(but no evidence)....
How do we determine what's moral?....must have been authored by Magic Mike(but no evidence)....
Wouldn't it just be easier and more honest to say...I don't know?
And then the question that never gets asked.
Where did Magic Mike come from?...Oh that's easy...he always was(again zero evidence).
The minute you accept that Magic Mike is the cause you've stopped looking for the real answer...even if there is no answer to find. The fact is there are likely things that can never be known but it takes incredible hubris to outright declare that some higher intelligence must know them(again all without the slightest bit of evidence).

    The short answer – anything.

However, I am not sure if all jokes on twitter were coming from Muslims. On the other hand, I am sure that Muslims have a sense of humor, but it may be difficult to understand by the Western audience as it may amount to cutting an infidel's head off with a dull knife.

A cartoon published in a news paper and a low budget film made by a Coptic Egyptian brought hundreds of thousands of angry Arab Muslims to the streets. Burning cars, burning buildings and embassies, killing innocent people. Yet when tens of thousands of fellow Muslims are butchered by the Assad regime and elsewhere around the globe, what do Arab Muslims do to protest? NOTHING! Life is meaningless to them. Primitive people stuck in the 3rd century receiving orders from the local primitive imams. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Muslims blindness to the murder of fellow Muslims is deafening. If one Palestinian slightly injured during an Israeli military operation intended to stop the rockets being fired into their country, the Islamic Arab world make the UN to becomes rabid in it's condemnation of Israel. Those who fire those rockets into Israel barely get a warning. We must all ask ourselves why the duplicity? Why the Arab Muslim world make sure that two thirds of the UNSC resolutions aimed at Israel and the US, and only a very small number directed at Syria's govt, Somalia's and so many other countries where real atrocities occur daily?

Firstly, We need to understand that these riots are not because of what was in the movie, but because of the fact that movie depicts Mohamed, no because of how he is depicted, but simply because he is being depicted. There is nothing in the video that was a lie, the things being portrait as ludicrous are in the Qu'ran. We are coming to blogs to give our opinions without having seen the video or read the Qu'ran. These is not about the movie is about attacking America an anyone seen as an american ally, at a time when it would hurt. Showing that 9/11 was not an isolated event and that it can happen again; that's the message these monsters are trying to send, we need to wake up and see Islam for what it is.

Sorry but this has already been debunked. It's a red herring. Or, as the Brits say, a pork pie. No, the YouTube video clip (there is no proof that a complete film exists. Even the promoters claim that they only showed it once and no audience showed up) was just a goad used by the usual parties to work up the rioters so they would have cover for the embassy assault. The folks behind the video, as far as anyone can tell, are all from the Middle East and are Christian. So far, no one has found even a rabid American backer of the production. A glance at the name of some of the actors seems to show that they, too, are of Middle Eastern ancestry. Nah, it was a diversion. Heck, it was put up on YouTube in June, for heavens sake.

What really enrages Muslims? Maybe the particular branch of the tree of humanity that settled the Middle Eastern regions, genetically predisposed them to be over emotional and ridiculously overreact to everything and anything. This genetic predisposition could be the reason that they bought into the Islamic religion and lifestyle in the first place.

Prob more likely that the Middle Eastern environment shaped the people who ended up there than the other way around. The angry, insular, jealous and tribe oriented gods of the Middle East were a perfect reflection of a harsh climate that gave little and demanded much. The Abrahamic religions ( Islam, Judaism, Christianity) all cribbed thier basic tenets from pre-existing local religions and cults tweaking the particulars to fit the socio-political needs of thier time (Judaism: Babylonian and post-Babylonian near east world of kingdoms & warring states; Christianity: Roman occupation; Islam: post-Roman near east power struggles).

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "There are three signs of a hypocrite: When he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays his trust."
    [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Do you honestly believe that Muslim on the world stage tell the truth?

      The President of Iran?

I don't think it is possible to be indoctrinated enough to believe that.

ALL religions are based on hypocritical beliefs, without exception. The Jews are, the Christians are, and the Muslims are as well.
