What really enrages Muslims? Twitter knows

By Richard Allen Greene, CNN

What really enrages Muslims?

Having a really good hair day - but no one knows because you wear a hijab.

Not being able to say "Hi" to your friend Jack in a plane - or to call out for your nephew when he gets lost in an airport because his name is "Jihad."

The 72 virgins all turn out to be male.

The tongue-in-cheek answers are part of an explosion of sharply satirical responses on Twitter to a Newsweek magazine cover showing Muslim men in turbans and keffiyahs, apparently rioting, under the banner all caps headline "MUSLIM RAGE."

Thousands of Muslims have made fun of the magazine headline since Monday, when it published a long article by the Somali-born writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former Muslim who describes herself as a "combatant in the clash of civilizations."

She links this month's protests against an online film making fun of the Muslim prophet Mohammed - which have resulted in several deaths around the world, including that of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens - to the reaction in 1989 against Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses."

"In 23 years not much has changed," Ali argues. "Islam's rage reared its ugly head again last week.

"The American ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members were murdered by a raging mob in Benghazi, Libya, possibly under the cover of protests against a film mocking the Muslim Prophet Muhammad," Ali writes.

Newsweek's cover puts Ali herself at the heart of the story about "Muslim rage," with the sub-heading: "How I survived it. How we can end it."

Ali, a sharp critic of Islamist violence and of what she sees as Europe's limp response to it, claims that the rioters represent mainstream Muslim views.

"The Muslim men and women (and yes, there are plenty of women) who support - whether actively or passively - the idea that blasphemers deserve to suffer punishment are not a fringe group. On the contrary, they represent the mainstream of contemporary Islam," she argues.

The "many Muslims and ex-Muslims" who "unambiguously condemn" the murders and riots "are marginalized and all too often indirectly held responsible for the very provocation."

But by Tuesday morning, on Twitter at least, far from being marginalized, those Muslims were relentlessly making fun of Newsweek and Ali.

One tweet showed the magazine cover doctored to make the rioting Muslim men look like glam rockers, replacing the headline with "Muslim Rave."

Remi Kanzai riffed on the same theme: "Just add nighttime & glow sticks. It goes from #MuslimRage to #MuslimRave."

Some of the more serious tweets dealt with the discrimination Muslims feel at airports: "When a 'female assist' is called before I even walk through the metal detector."

But many kept the mood light, complaining about work, family, Islamic restrictions on eating pork and drinking wine, or fasting during Ramadan.

"The Dark Knight Rises came out in Ramadan," one complained.

And some aimed their barbs directly at the writer of the provocative piece.

"Whaaaaat?!" Megh demanded. "Ayaan Hirsi Ali doesn't have an active Twitter account?!"

Enraging Muslims et al goes way back:

    "The Two Universal Sects

    They all err—Moslems, Jews,

    Christians, and Zoroastrians:

    Humanity follows two world-wide sects:

    One, man intelligent without religion,

The second, religious without intellect. "

So out of all that has been written here from all who responded, can we just say one thing. GOD is LOVE not hate. Read your books on religion and you will see that the only message that GOD has for you is LOVE. The key to heaven is LOVE. Look that up and see what you will learn about your life today. Do you who has written or read any of the statements here found any thing stating to LOVE which is GOD, he loves you and is very sad at the lives you are living today. The true religion is GOD, you don't need a book to learn, teach or talk to him.

From one who doesn't believe in God it's rather difficult to tell whether he is either "love", or "hate". Both sides appear to be equally well represented by you followers.

Animals act like animals when they don't get their way period. You can look at most all riots and its caused by people acting like animals.

If white people were to act like blacks or Muslims when something doesn't go their way this world would burn to the ground but we don't, and we continue to let animals get away with murder.

Uh, since when have actual animals behaved like that? You do a disservice to animals when you compare them to insane human beings.

The latest outrage by Muslims has nothing to do with the anti-Islam film but rather the unrest and attacks on US Embassies is a culmination of the rising tensions and deep-rooted hatred amongst civilizations in a divided world (Matthew 12:25,26).

For a better understanding of the history of Islam and the Middle East we invite you to read the articles ‘World History and Developments in the Middle East’, ‘Clash of Civilizations’ and ‘CNN Belief Blog – Sign of the Times’, listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain how and by whom this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9.

A lot of you are either dumb or misinformed... To those who are saying they've never seen other groups of people riot or protest because of an offence on TV, well the other way to say that is Muslims are the most of these groups that have hearts to defend their beliefs and the most who care about the greatest icon who tought them these things they believe in.. Their prophet Mohammad, who they're d...efending, is someone who could do anything to protect them and if any was wronged, to help him, defend him, and solve issues for all these people.. He didn't even see an of these people living now, but he said they were his beloved... So they would definitely be filled with love for him and desire to defend any offence to him... And to those who are saying they proved the movie right, go and ask Muslim scholars... KILLING THE AMBASSADOR, BURNING THE FLAG AND VIOLENCE ARE TOTALLY ANTI-ISLAMIC.. and finaly... Google is there, Books are there, A lot of Sources are there, so use them to read about the prophet Mohammad for some truth.. UNLESS YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO MERELY JUDGE MUSLIMS AND BELEIVE THAT MOVIE.... I Know Most People Will Ignore All Of This.. but some people still have brains.See More

Hassan, the mere fact that other people sincerely interpret the teachings of Islam very different from how you do is yet more evidence that your Allah has weak communication skills, and therefore wasn't an omnipotent being to begin with, no matter what Mohammed said. Actually, Allah doesn't exist and never did. Similar conclusions can be drawn about the Christian god, and the usual free will arguments that believers will no doubt try to trot out are even more negative for the case for either god.

      September 18, 2012 at 2:58 pm |
    • Glinda N.

Perhaps it is the Muslims who need to access Google, books, and a lot of those sources out there so they understand that "KILLING THE AMBASSADOR, BURNING THE FLAG AND VIOLENCE ARE TOTALLY ANTI-ISLAMIC"

lol. they riot to defend their 'beliefs' but when their brothers explode themselves and others they remain quite – what's to protest, right?

Hassan, so you're saying muslims do see muhammad as an idol to be worshiped?

      September 18, 2012 at 3:12 pm |
    • Rachel

Hassan, that was well worded! It is obvious that you feel emotional about the ignorance people have regarding Islam. I am also infuriated, as well any one who believes in respect, equality and love should be! Historically, there have always been people who act in fear & ignorance, as well as those who perpetrate violence in the name of religion for the sole purpose of controlling masses. Islam, like Christianity or Judaism teaches what God (Allah, Jehovah etc) is defined to be and what God orders for the lives of mankind. There are characters of note in religion such as Mohammad who represent such pure devotion to God AND to the people that one is compelled to love and honor this individual. We are all more alike in our views and lives than we give consideration to. I do not believe that Islam holds the TRUTH for ME but that is not to say that it cannot hold the TRUTH for someone else, and to them, that TRUTH is just as real as mine is to me. My prayer is not that everyone become a carbon copy of my thinking but that we can all together find the way to common, mutual education of eachother and with that, respect of difference.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Dio not say that to evangelicals as they want war and blood at any and all costs.

    English

6:108 Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus have We made alluring to each people its own doings. In the end will they return to their Lord, and We shall then tell them the truth of all that they did.

    Turkish:
6:108 Allah'tan baska yalvarip-yakardiklarina (taptiklarina) sövmeyin; sonra onlar da haddi asarak bilmeksizin Allah'a söverler. Iste böyle, biz her ümmete yaptiklarini süslü (çekici) gösterdik, sonra onlarin son varislari Rablerinedir. O, yapmakta olduklarini onlara haber verecektir.

Don’t they realize that their hate and violence gives their belief system a bad name?

I follow one who taught us to love our neighbor and pray for those who persecute us; one who prayed from the cross for those who were crucifying him; one who laid down his life, so we may have forgiveness and eternal life.

I follow Jesus, whom I believe is the son of God. His way is the best way.

The bible was written by men. That's right, by actual human beings. It's hearsay at best, but most likely fiction.

      September 18, 2012 at 3:09 pm |
    • RealityMan

The bible was written by man, both sane and insane (yes insane. Anyone who talks to invisible people are clinically insane). There is no more proof of a god than there is Santa Clause. In fact, there is MORE proof for the existence of Santa than some "loving" god who let's his creation suffer. The Bible, Quran, and Torah all tell of a confused and viscous god:

Adam and Eve? god is supposed to be all knowing. That means he KNEW the serpent was in the garden. And since god is "all powerful" he allowed the serpent to be there. Adam and Eve were supposed to be unknowing of anything evil or good. If the story is "true", then god played a sadistic game with them knowing that Adam and Eve would give in to temptation.

Job? Well again, a sadistic god toying with a person's life just to prove a point.

The Sacrafice of Isaac? If god is all knowing and can see into mens' hearts, it was a sadistic game god played on Abraham to tell him to kill his son.

The great flood. What kind of sicko annihilates an entire planet's ecosystem just to kill off the "evil" in one population? Mass murder and suffering on a global scale of all species just to remove the "bad people".

I'll leave you with this little thought: If king Herod is considered evil for killing the male children in his bid to kill Jesus, isn't god even MORE evil for torturing a whole nation (Egypt) with 10 plagues and killing their first born sons? Torture and Murder of non-believers is still torture and murder.

MORALITY & ATHEISM – By Irfan Hussain, one of Pakistan's most famous Muslim columnists.

Amit- Irfan's analysis fits all religions. Folloiwng is a quote from Mark Twain-enjoy:

So much blood has been shed by the Church because of an omission from the Gospel: "Ye shall be indifferent as to what your neighbor's religion is." Not merely tolerant of it, but indifferent to it. Divinity is claimed for many religions; but no religion is great enough or divine enough to add that new law to its code.

The Islamista are just about 600 years behind Chrisitians.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.
