I read last week where Obama said that if we can stop South America from clear cutting and put an end to Rhino and Elephant poaching in Africa, that somehow that is going to help Americans. Help Americans?? I can go to the zoo if I what see some stinking farting polution making steaks on the hoof. We are better off with them!

Are you really that selfish? They kill the rhino because they think their horns Are medicine, although there is no proof. Also,We need biodiversity.Being captive in a zoo being the last of your kind is not ideal for us.

    • MDAT

You don't have proof. The only thing it does is in your mind. Not in real life. And atheism is not useless.

      September 19, 2012 at 6:42 pm |
    • truth be told

President George H W Bush said an atheist is not a patriot and should not be a citizen of America, we are one nation under God. And the President was right, atheism is totally useless. Atheism is to society what dog crap is to the bottom of a sneaker. Of the millions of lives transformed by Christ, all have entered the Kingdom of God through prayer.

      September 19, 2012 at 6:53 pm |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!` `

    • I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

      @tbt,

ye villianous and calumnious cur. Avast there with thy blatent falsehoods.

There is nothing on YouTube with video of G.H.W.Bush.

There are comments attached to a video that related to the following (otherwise unsubstantiated) exchange:

Roger I. Sherman (reporter): "Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?"
G.H.W.Bush: "No, I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God.… I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists."

This occured at a Presidential campaign press conference at O'Hare Airport, Chicago (August 27, 1987) just after Bush announced his candidacy and BEFORE Bush was President.
      http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/George_H._W._Bush

      So:

      1. Unsubstantiated and attributed by a single reporter (not electronically recorded).
      2. Not from a President. (From a Vice-President campaigning for the Presidency)
      3. No Presidential decree there. Just an election cycle 'gaffe'.

I think Buch probably said it, but ...

@tbt ye doth exaggerate too much.

    • TR6

@truth be told: “If you identify with atheism you are not a patriot by Presidential decree. Sorry you are dog sh it useless to America, your families and yourselves.”

Considering how badly Bush screwed up the WMD in Iraqi question, how he screwed up the economy, how he got us into 2 screwed up wars and managed to screw up the American budget surplus left over by Clinton into the biggest deficit America has ever had. His opinions on patriotism are just as screwed up . And considering your need to make disgusting analogies, your opinions are even more screwed up than his were.

Bible says there is no one without sin. God would not look at whether a person has sinned less or more. No matter how big or small a sin, it is sin. Everyone of us have our own sins that we need to address and ask God for His forgiveness. Let us not try to judge anybody else as we are not worthy to judge any in the first place. God is the Judge and He will take care of it.

I'm not any type of heavy churchgoer. I haven't been to a church other than funerals for years. But I guess I would consider myself spiritual or open to "something" beyond current human being's understanding. Of the TV evangelists I've flipped through the channels at, Osteen is the most pleasant and positive I've ever seen and the only one I've actually watch whole shows.
His program is only 30 minutes and done in a light slightly humorous style. His message is always uplifting. "You can do it because God believes in you and loves you" etc. Never, ever a negative comment about any group, people, place, or viewpoint. He doesn't condemn anybody to hell or mete out judgments. It's just the overall message of "God loves you, wants the best for you and everybody. Stay positive." Basically, he's a motivational speaker and I personally see nothing wrong with that.
But most importantly, I've never seen an episode where he asked the viewers for money. They probably have other means such as his books and those who join his congregation for that. I can watch it and not be assaulted in that typical rude televangelist manner.
I know there are some Christians who don't like him or his message but hey, to each his own. As far as what I know about him and the pleasant inspiring message I occasionally get from him, I have no problem whatsoever.

      @UD,

As I said I started watching his show every now and then because it was a pleasant surprise to see a televangelist be nice to everyone. Then I watched more because I liked those little positive motivational messages. I don't read his books or know much of anything else about him.
If you have information about bad practices I wouldn't mind if you could direct me to where I might find them.

Jesus said, "Woe to those who listen not but speak much.....much will happen hence for those that love me and cherish me."

I say love and cherish, and the hell with you if you don't like it.

Oh, and Obama recently stated the same damn thing. Heathen. You don't hear Romney asking people to worship him!

      Aye, Bootyfunk,

The lubberly cur Joel Osteen and his comely wench are right scurvy pirates, and no mistake. After a broadside or two of quotes from the black book of smiting they board their sheep in the smoke and strip 'em of their booty. I bet my doubloon to your piece o' eight their booty's hidden away in an off-shore isle in the Spanish ocean. P'rhaps the Cayman's, safe from the maruding navy lads. And, like any good scurvy pirate, not a single silver Real paid as tax to his majesty.

Arrghh, I'd like to find the map to his treasure.

All of this just goes to show you how much American truly is a God-fearing nation. Founded on Christianity and certain to take our Christian values and Evangelical majority into the future. Liberals can fight for satan, but will fight in the army that protects God's blind side.

Values, conviction, leadership. no-nonsense. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Democrats.

You do realize that the term 'majority' requires something to be >50%.

Evangelical Protestants may be a loud and obnoxious voice in politics, but (thankfully) they represent a minority.

Actually most of our great forefathers were Deists. They believed in a encompassing God but most were not what we would call Christians today. Just take a look at Jefferson's New Testament. He removed all miracles an only put in what he call the Philosophy of Jesus. He said that the miracles were probably made up by the writers an got in the way of the truth of Jesus' teachings.

  18. Atheism is Great for Kids and Grown-Ups Too!

It's really best for all people including children to have an agnostic approach to god, and an atheistic approach to all religion. It keeps things simple for kids, and lets them be all that they can be. They just need to be taught that some things, like all religion, were just made up by salesmen and politicians from long ago. (Yes, charlatan folklore and spam started long before the Bible; what would make you think they hadn't?) And they need to be taught that other things, like God, we really don't know a damn thing about.

Atheists have strong minds and don't need a religion. Many religious folk have the best intentions. But too often, religious folk run and hide their misdeeds within their religion (and by doing so, they disserve society). And too often, religious folk are easily offended when someone mocks their make-believe characters – and, as we can see they can get really CRAZY!

Although there are many religious folk with good intentions – some selflessly helping others, religions and religious organizations are, as a whole, just big old clubs – each trying to out do each other and inspiring hate and division (often disguised as love) along the way. The problem is that people too easily buy into religion and don't realize how unfounded it all is. And when they buy into it, they buy into a lot of really old, really weird tenets that are nothing but harmful for the modern mind.

Take Christianity, for instance. Just look at all the things that Christians argue about amongst themselves today – abortion, men's and women's roles in the church, celibacy, contraception, acceptance of gays, etc. Most of these issues have their roots in the conflicted, unfounded tenets of early Christianity. Non-Mormons harp on Joseph Smith these days. But we really don't have any more proof at all to believe that Paul, the self-proclaimed "apostle" was anything more than an ordinary man who needed to make up religious "sales literature" to survive and spread his own personal beliefs. And yet a good chunk of the NT is attributed to Paul and accepted by many Christians. And a lot of what he wrote about has to do with many of the issues I mentioned above that have Christians fighting amongst themselves hundreds of years later. I don't buy any of it.

Get a good cup of tea, and sit down and collect your thoughts. If you find it helpful to pray to a god, fine, but it is really healthier for the mind to leave behind all the make-believe characters that people over the centuries have tried to define for which there is little foundation.

    • Atheism is Great for Kids and Grown-Ups Too!

(to be added to my last paragraph)

Because with those invented characters and powers – that's where division and hate join the little party in your mind. That's where, in your mind, you are inheriting the division and hate from ordinary politicians, lobbyists and salesmen from long ago.

  20. Reality

JC's family and friends had it right 2000 years ago ( Mark 3: 21 "And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.")

Said passage is one of the few judged to be authentic by most contemporary NT scholars. e.g. See Professor Ludemann's conclusion in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 24 and p. 694.

Actually, Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Many contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with J's gospel being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European/Utah white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

So why do we really care what a first century CE, illiterate, long-dead, preacher/magic man or Joel Osteen would do or say?

As a good student, you have read the reiterations of the "fems" (flaws, errors, muck and stench ) of religion. Therefore the seeds have been planted in rich soil. Go therefore and preach the truth to all nations, reiterating as you go amongst the lost, bred, born and brainwashed souls of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism as Reality makes its triumphant return all because of you!!!!
