Why would anyone give a rat's patootie about Osteen the Toothy One and his opinion on anything?

    • I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

It's truly hard to imagine, particularly so soon after the equally content-free fluff piece yesterday lifted out of the Piers Morgan spot.

Here a round table headed by Soledad tries to pin Osteen down and get him to say anything definitive but he is as slippery as ever and politely dodges and weaves the question – like always.

I wonder what percentage people unfamiliar with Osteen, who presumably live under a rock, given a video sound bite of him, and asked to guess gay or not gay would answer with the former.

    Prayer changes things

    September 20, 2012 at 6:44 pm |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

I'm sorry, "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but your assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. The degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements is 0.0. To help you understand the degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements, I will access my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE). Using my IEE module, the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements is: "TOTAL FAIL".

I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book might help you overcome this problem:

    Dear Joel,

o "Abrahamics" like yourself believe that your god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

    1. The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

    2. "Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

    3. See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

fred – you are the one giving it special status. reread your original reply to me. despite the fact that you say "sin is sin", in your next breath you most certainly single out being gay as somehow worse than the rest. No sin is sin and they all are part of a fallen world. The Bible is clear on that point. The only sin greater is rejecting God because that brings eternal separation from God. The rest of human sin is all in the same sin bucket.
When the divorce laws were liberalized there were believers crying out the evils of divorce. The divorce issue although causing more harm to children than the gay issue just faded away because no one used it for political purposes, no one (CNN) hammered home day and night that divorce is a not choice or that divorce is not a sin. No one attacked the church for their position that God says “I HATE DIVORCE”. Note the all capitals and the word hate. Gods use of all caps or hate is rare and it is used for divorce not gay issues. There is truth is the subtleties of the Bible and it is there for a reason.

How do you think we ended up in the recession we are in fred? Oh, that's right all those liars, thieves, prideful boastful wall street people, banks and the greed of Americans which goes directly against what the bible teaches. What an idiot.

Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

You are wrong. I am not targeting anyone..........read carefully sin is sin.
What you fail to understand is that if the Bible is wrong on ho-mo-$exuality then it is wrong on everything. The Bible becomes nothing more than Jeffersons Bible or Roberts Bible.............what every floats your boat or the boat of the majority becomes the new truth. In short there is no truth. Without truth we box future generations into a corner where there are no freedoms or rights because there can be no freedoms when there is no truth.

"No sin is sin and they all are part of a fallen world. The Bible is clear on that point. The only sin greater is rejecting God because that brings eternal separation from God"

This is why there are so many churches now allowing gay marriage, they know the truth that people don't have a choice in their sexual orientation. When they get married before their god, then they are not living in sin.

      September 20, 2012 at 6:26 pm |
    • James

"What you fail to understand is that if the Bible is wrong on ho-mo-$exuality then it is wrong on everything"

The scriptures actually say nothing about homosexuality as a psychosexual orientation. Our understandings of sexual orientation are distinctly modern ones that were not present in the minds of Scripture writers. A few passages of Scripture (seven at the most) object to certain types of same-sex expressions or acts. The particular acts in question, however, are sexual expressions which are exploitative, oppressive, commercialized, or offensive to ancient purity rituals. There is no Scriptural guidance for same-sex relationships which are loving and mutually respecting. Guidelines for these relationships should come from the same general Scriptural norms that apply to heterosexual relationships.

      September 20, 2012 at 6:27 pm |
    • Jeannine

"what every floats your boat or the boat of the majority becomes the new truth. In short there is no truth. Without truth we box future generations into a corner where there are no freedoms or rights because there can be no freedoms when there is no truth."

The Scriptures were written approximately 2000 or more years ago when there was no knowledge of constitutional homosexuality. The Scripture writers believed that all people were naturally heterosexual so that they viewed homosexuality activity as unnatural. Women today are pointing out that the inferiority of women expressed in the scriptures was a product of culture and the times in which the Bible was written; it should not be followed today, now that we are beginning to appreciate the natural and God-given equality of men and women.

Similarly, as we know that homosexuality is just as natural and God-given as heterosexuality, we realize that the Biblical injunctions against homosexuality were conditioned by the attitudes and beliefs about this form of sexual expression which were held by people without benefit of centuries of scientific knowledge and understanding.

It is unfair of us to expect or impose a twentieth century mentality and understanding about equality of genders, races and sexual orientations on the Biblical writers. We must be able to distinguish the eternal truths the Bible is meant to convey from the cultural forms and attitudes expressed there.

"Jesus was very kind but did leave with the reminder now go and sin no more."

Everyone knows the story about Jesus and the woman about to be stoned by the mob. This account is only found in John 7:53-8:12. The mob asked Jesus whether they should stone the woman (the punishment required by the Old Testament) or show her mercy. Jesus doesn’t fall for this trap. Jesus allegedly states, let the one who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her. The crowd dissipates out of shame. That story was not originally in the Gospel of John or in any of the Gospels. It was added by later scribes. The story is not found in the oldest and best manuscripts of the Gospel of John. Nor does its writing style comport with the rest of John. Most serious textual critics state that this story should not be considered part of the Bible.

It's obvious that logic doesn't work on you and you're set on deciding you know better, so let's leave it at 'you're overzealous and need to stick to your own kind', whatever that happens to be. And don't vote, sounds like you're prone to voting against the rights of others to fit your narrow worldview.

What you are suggesting is that any two loving committed humans when they do it right (whatever you claim that is) brings glory to God. This is far from the truth. If you want to get into the presence of God one must commit and surrender his or her life to God. That is what is required and few will do that. Now, in the presence of God there is never doubt exactly what is right and what brings glory.

Fred do your homework because if you look at Africa they have a much bigger problem on their hands when it comes to aids. By the way straights have the same kind of se<b.x. LMAO!

      Yeah Right
Study after study as shown the lifespan of a ho-mo$exual is 20 to 30 years shorter than that of hetero$exual males. In the best possible light even 20 years taken away from life is a tragedy …not to mention the pain and suffering that goes along. This is why you must stop pushing bad information that encourages wrong behavior. I do not care if politics has managed to twist the definition of normal. I care about people and the truth.
Here is the truth. If you continue to applaud and encourage action that results in premature death you are the guilty one. Please do not change the subject and tell me how young innocent people do not have a choice. We all have choices and excuses for the choices we act upon. I would have no problem if you presented positive encouraging choices based on truth. Stop leading the innocent and vulnerable to an early death!

      Sam
So, you don’t know the answer………..
You are allowed to do what you do because all things work to the good for those who believe in Jesus. You see that if it were not for sin I would not have known or needed the grace of God or the love of God.
You cannot win, it is a lose lose game for you yet you cannot stop. This is why good and evil are seperated in eternal life.

Fred let me tech you a lesson, you see you already have eternal life, yup there it is

whether you have gods covenant or not. you see life is Gaia. your still connected with Gaia only separation from life is death
you flesh parishes and returns to the soil, which makes new flesh, its the same for your soul.
regardless of what your lying god tells you; you will not go were the gods are your one this real for ever; because your apart of this realm. and being part of this realm you only die when this realm dies. just like matter the soul is never truly destroyed. this is the way of the world Gaia's law so to speak, you cant brake it. know one can brake it; whether you call it the laws of nature or the laws of physic, they supersede all laws sent forth by Gods; because even the gods are created by Gaia / life

Thanks, unfortunately I am running late so I need to go. However, in certain aspects I agree in that the form of our eternal existence is very different from us simply hanging out with gods down the line in some mystic cloud.

For the spiritual truth (John 14:17) about the above mentioned subject we encourage you to read the fifth item listed on the ‘Current Events’ page of our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

Every time Joel Osteen is questioned about it he waffles to come up with an answer as he is spiritually blind and his answer is always an abomination (1 Cor. 2:14).

People prefer darkness over light (John 3:19) and as a result God provided them with such a strong delusion that He sent them Joel Osteen and many others. For a better understanding of the spirit he serves we invite you to read the article ‘False Apostles and False Christs’, listed on our website.

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain how and by whom this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9.

    "Mary Davis

Let me set you straight. GOD did NOT create the gay/lesbian lifestyle.
Men's IMMORALITY created the gay lifestyle.
Women's IMMORALITY created the lesbian lifestyle."

You seem a bit confused. Gay folks lead all of the same lifestyes that straight folks do – we don't have special ones just for ourselves. We even have been known to live the religious lifestyle, among the milions of others.

Now, God DID make people who can only be attracted to the same gender. If you believe that God creates people who can ONLY be immoral based on the way they were created, that's your odd notion, and rather insulting to the Creator.

Why not just take your complaints up with God? Really, HE made the discision to create folks who can ONLY be gay. It's not like we get to choose.

@ TC: you don't have to agree with the Bible to accurately describe what it says.
Genesis 3: the Fall. Things are not now as they were designed to be. We did this to ourselves.

Being "born this way" is equally a problem for those genetically predisposed to alcoholism. But in the same way, that is a result of the Fall – not the design.

"Being "born this way" is equally a problem for those genetically predisposed to alcoholism."

All major medical professional organizations concur that sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be changed, from gay to straight or otherwise. The American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and European Psychological, Psychiatric, and Medical Associations all agree with this, as does the World Health Organization and the medical organizations of Japan, China, and most recently, Thailand. Furthermore, attempts to change one's sexual orientation can be psychologically damaging, and cause great inner turmoil and depression, especially for Christian gays and lesbians.

The scientific evidence of the innateness of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgenderism is overwhelming, and more peer-reviewed studies which bolster this fact are being added all the time. Science has long regarded sexual orientation – and that's all sexual orientations, including heterosexuality – as a phenotype. Simply put, a phenotype is an observable set of properties that varies among individuals and is deeply rooted in biology. For the scientific community, the role of genetics in sexuality is about as "disputable" as the role of evolution in biology.

On the second point, that there is no conclusion that there is a "gay gene," they are right. No so-called gay gene has been found, and it's highly unlikely that one ever will. This is where conservative Christians and Muslims quickly say "See, I told you so! There's no gay gene, so being gay is a choice!"

The fact that a so-called "gay gene" has not been discovered does not mean that homosexuality is not genetic in its causation. This is understandably something that can seem a bit strange to those who have not been educated in fields of science and advanced biology, and it is also why people who are not scientists ought not try to explain the processes in simple black-and-white terms. There is no gay gene, but there is also no "height gene" or "skin tone gene" or "left-handed gene." These, like sexuality, have a heritable aspect, but no one dominant gene is responsible for them.

Many genes, working in sync, contribute to the phenotype and therefore do have a role in sexual orientation. In many animal model systems, for example, the precise genes involved in sexual partner selection have been identified, and their neuro-biochemical pathways have been worked out in great detail. A great number of these mechanisms have been preserved evolutionarily in humans, just as they are for every other behavioral trait we know (including heterosexuality).

There are many biologic traits which are not specifically genetic but are biologic nonetheless. These traits are rooted in hormonal influences, contributed especially during the early stages of fetal development. This too is indisputable and based on extensive peer-reviewed research the world over. Such prenatal hormonal influences are not genetic per se, but are inborn, natural, and biologic nevertheless.

@Russ – You can’t compare being gay to alcoholism. Alcoholism is considered a disease, something negative and something that can (and should be) treated. A gay person can’t change their sexual orientation, it's not a disease and it doesn’t need to be treated.

      September 20, 2012 at 6:05 pm |
    • sam

Russ, alcoholism is a disease. Your argument is specious and insultingly obtuse. So are you just an idiot? Or an ass?

      September 20, 2012 at 6:35 pm |
    • Russ

@ Sam, Robert & Erik: yes, the Bible calls sin a spiritual disease. A fatal one. As Kierkegaard so aptly put it: a sickness unto death. And it's one that we all have.

This is not unique to ho.mo.s.exuality (much to the chagrin of my conservative compadres who trumpet this particular sin as worse than their own). All sins bring death (Rom.6:23), but that's exactly why Jesus died on the cross.

the problem for you, however, is that "being born this way" is not a loophole in the biblical view. because of the nature of the Fall, we are responsible for our own faulted dispositions, and – just like an alcoholic, or even a pedophile – we must fight against our broken predilections. biblically speaking, that's precisely what they are: broken (Jer.17:9; Rom.3:10-12).

@ Sam: you are insulted by this thought. but please recognize, it is the cross that offends you. Jesus' death is an offense b/c it says two things clearly:
      1) we ALL deserve to die because of our sins (it's worse than we want to admit)
      2) Jesus was willing to die *in our place* (it's better than we ever dared imagine)

This is the Good News Christians trumpet: *despite* the depth of my mess (I deserve death), God's love is deeper than my mess (he not only saves us, but begins to change us). Will you continue to try to be your own savior or admit your ultimate need for help?

  20. Honey Badger Dont Care

    These people are such rationalizers.

The bible clearly says that they should be put to death.

    Leviticus 20:13

    New International Version (NIV)

13 “‘If a man has se xual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

The book is full of hate and violence and anyone who follows it should be suspected of mental instability.
