Senate hate crimes hearing centers on Sikh temple massacre

By Stacey Samuel, CNN

Washington (CNN) - Forty-five days after a deadly shooting at Wisconsin Sikh temple, hundreds of Sikhs and their supporters lined the halls of Congress on Wednesday for a Capitol Hill hearing on hate crimes and the growing threat of domestic terrorism.

“The recent shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was a tragic hate crime that played out on TV around the country,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, who chaired the hearing for a Senate Judiciary subcommittee.

“It was not the first tragedy based on hate, and, sadly, it won’t be the last,” Durbin said of the shooting, which left six dead and four wounded in addition to the gunman, who took his own life. “But it should cause all of us to redouble our efforts to combat the threat of domestic terrorism.”

Sikh communities across the country say they have experienced increased attacks since September 11, 2001. Sikh men wear turbans that some people mistakenly associate with Islam.

Many Sikhs have lobbied the federal government to track hate crimes that are committed specifically against them.

“I have filmed, chronicled, combated hate crimes against this community for 11 years,” Valerie Kaur, a Sikh filmmaker and community activist, said in testimony at the hearing.

“In the aftermath of Oak Creek, reporters came up to me and asked me, 'How many hate crimes have there been? How many hate murders have there been?' " Kaur said. "And I couldn’t tell them … because the government currently does not track hate crimes against Sikhs at all."

Harpreet Singh Saini, whose mother, Paramjit Kaur Singh, died in the Wisconsin shooting, told the subcommittee, "I came here today to ask government to give my mother the dignity of being a statistic.

“She was an American," said Saini, an 18-year-old college student who's majoring in law enforcement. "And this was not our American dream."

More than 400 people from across the country filled the Senate gallery, and a second room for overflow, to watch the hearing.

“I have a son who is 13 years old, and I thought, imagine that was my son telling a story about how his mother wasn’t going to be there for his graduation, his wedding," Linda Sarsour of the Arab American Association of New York said after Saini's testimony. "It just connects to you as a human, as a parent. I forgot that I was Muslim.”

According to the Justice Department, 6,600 hate crime incidents were reported to the FBI in 2010, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Nearly half were motivated by racial prejudice, including those against people of Asian descent, though the agency does not track anti-Asian crime specifically.

Nearly 13% of hate crimes in 2010 were directed specifically against Arabs and Middle Easterners, with a recent rise in crimes directed at Muslims.

“The FBI has a hate crime incident report form, and it only has an anti-Muslim category. I think that category is a catch-all category, and it really reflects this very flawed logic of mistaken identity,” said Kaur, who has been documenting the progress of the Sikh community in Oak Creek since the August massacre.

Some at the hearing said there are not enough federal analysts and agents monitoring hate groups and people like white supremacist Wade Mitchell Page, the suspect in the Oak Creek temple shootings.

A Department of Justice report presented at the hearing said that that the 2009 Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act has strengthened the department’s ability to prosecute hate crimes.

A coalition of civil rights, civic, faith and community groups is calling on President Obama to host a summit of religious tolerance, saying in a Thursday letter that "Religious bigotry has reached a crisis point in America."

"It is time for President Obama to ensure that this climate of hate and bigotry does not continue to spiral out of control,” said the letter, signed by about 100 groups.

Interesting claim that Sikhs have no caste system. The caste system was one thing I disliked about Indian culture, I have experienced the prejudiced within the caste system first hand.

Okay so they carry the comb to remind them of the importance of cleanliness. Then why the beards that do not appear overtly well groomed?.And why keep your head covered if you spend so much time combing your hair and keeping it clean? I am not trying to be rude, these are my legitimate questions. If there are Sikhs visiting here please reply, I'd welcome the chance to converse.

I don't have many videos about Sikhism so don't expect much in the way of posts in here. I also am pleading a degree of ignorance around this religion. I don't know enough to comment effectively about this one.

I may throw in a couple of general Atheism videos for those unsure about their position on faith or in the process of leaving the irrationality of it.

I had a coworker who was originally from India while I was overseas, he offered me some insights into Indian culture, he himself spoke as a rationalist and atheist about religion. Although he was open to concepts such a Gaia and other philosophical religions like Buddishm. I found his talks enlightening as he described the vast verity of beliefs and cultures within India. He often spoke of Shiekism as being common to the militant regions of India, as this was where many of the nations soldiers came from. He also spoke of their being a long standing conflict between India and Islam.
feel free to correct any misconception I may hold regarding this.

Sikhism is not an area of my expertise so I feel unqualified to comment. But I have had first hand experience with the Indian caste system,l particularly the shoe makers caste, and it was not a good experience. It involved racism against my friend who was to marry their daughter. Abuse of their daughter and son by their father, death threats to both their daughter and my friend from their father. He threatened to honor kill her to save face infront of the caste. I had to stay at my friends apartment some nights because he really believed this man was going to come and try to kill him. My experience with Indian caste systems was a terrible horrific one. It shows that insanity is not just confined to religion but can manifest in other social forms.

The vast majority of domestic terrorism is because of religion. Fueled with racist hate.
That is why I stay as far away from fundies as I can.
They are like bit bulls, you never know when one will go berserk and start killing.
You at least have a chance against the pit bull as it does not have a high powered millitary grade weapon like the fundie will come strapped with.
Nothing shows their love of their god and how much they follow jeebus' teaching like shooting your children.

In my research I have found that Mary Magdalene was in fact both consort and wife. A consort was simply a companion. If you read the scriptures, you will find that in the late BE and early CE, it was actually possible to both be married and single simultaneously.

      How you ask?

You must refer to the Gnostic versus attributed to Phillip who said, "Be it spouse or alone, we are only that which our threshold allows on the Sabbath."

Loosely translated it means a woman can be beholden to a man one day, and quite free the next. This makes polygamy possible without breaking God's law against Adultery.

      @niknak

My friend you miss the point of my statement. Violence stems from a lack of freedom. Hate is born of intolerance. But from whence comes this servitude and hatred?

If you read from the Thomas Gospel we see that, "...our brothers rally and cry...free them from wench and w.h.o.r.e. Let them be as our Lord intended."

This lack of evolutionary independence to spread one's seed and strengthen our species is quite unnatural and leads to jealousy and violence.

In The Book of the Lord, we read, "Wade in the pond often but do not drown." I think that says it all.

The Gnostic gospels were indeed "scripture" far more so than the present form of the so called "Holy Bible". In fact, these scriptures tell the tale of Jesus the man. Married, a Buddhist, a nudist, a true renaissance man of his time.

    Dr. Donnel Johnson

In the Gnostic Gospels, Peter and Matthew are depicted as unable to understand Jesus’ message, most likely due to his deafness. While the other disciples took the time to learn sign language, such as it was, Peter and Matthew did not find this to be important.

Scholars have interpreted this as a criticism against the school of Christianity associated with the Gospel of Matthew where Matthew writes, “…our Lord, be He holy and impressive is challenging. He challenges us in mind and patience.”

The theme of "unable to understand", (until later), is the theme of Mark, and also the, (suppressed), Secret Gospel of Mark. It was a common theme at the time.

      September 20, 2012 at 9:36 pm |
    • Dr. Donnel Johnson

      @realbuckyball

This theme and others lend themselves to some staggering conclusions. Based on the evidence we have, it is clear now that the disciples of Jesus were in fact in business with him and equal partners.

      How do we know this?

In the Timothy Gospel we read, "...and at our table will Phillip score our keep. Speak in turn and in fairness. Ours is the mutual trust."

I think it is clear that these thirteen men sought profit and most likely in textiles.

      September 20, 2012 at 9:45 pm |
    • realbuckyball

That is interesting. Is there other evidence ?
I used to think "of course he existed". Then I was not sure, as so much of the "evidence" is concocted, and Paul essentially put "Christianity" in place, with almost nothing recognizable from the gospels, and identical with Mithraism. Now I amm open to ideas.
He may have just been a run of the mill preacher, or a Roman invention, or a Pauline invention, or a Roman insurgent.

Did you know that in the Gospel of Thomas, it is written that Jesus relied heavily on Thomas saying, "...it is a weary day dream that Thomas earns great victory in quenching the thirst of my people."

It was incorrectly translated from the Coptic to mean that "Thomas the Contender" was a champion for Jesus, when in fact; Jesus was referring to Thomas' ability to mix wine-based c.o.cktails! We often joke that he should have been called, "Thomas the Bartender".

I'm sorry, "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but your assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. The degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements is 0.0. To help you understand the degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements, I will access my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE). Using my IEE module, the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertions may represent correct statements is: "TOTAL FAIL".

I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book might help you overcome this problem:

  17. Reality

The simple, safe and peaceful solution:

Only for the new members of this blog:

Putting the kibosh/”google” on religion to include Mormonism:

    • As far as anyone knows, there was no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

    • Ditto for Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

    • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

    • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

    • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

    • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

    • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

Added details available upon written request.

A quick search will put the kibosh on any other groups calling themselves a religion.

    e.g. Taoism

"The origins of Taoism are unclear. Traditionally, Lao-tzu who lived in the sixth century is regarded as its founder. Its early philosophic foundations and its later beliefs and rituals are two completely different ways of life. Today (1982) Taoism claims 31,286,000 followers.

Legend says that Lao-tzu was immaculately conceived by a shooting star; carried in his mother's womb for eighty-two years; and born a full grown wise old man. "

    September 20, 2012 at 5:28 pm |
    • Dr. Donnel Johnson

Jesus tells us in the Gnostic Gospels that his father and mother "have not spaketh a single word in two years plus three. This sounds like a man scorned to me.

How can we prove marital troubles in the home of Jesus? Reading from Mary (Magdalene), she says, "when Joseph's gaze met mine I felt a burning deep within...." She goes on to discuss Jesus' jealousy and rage.

Is it possible Joseph never forgave Mary for her affair, and Joseph and Jesus were competing for Mary Magdalene’s affection?

In the Jesus Gospel he discusses long journeys east of the desert where, "....there I encountered great wisdom and peace among the monks. They removed the sand from my sandals and blew upon my feet with flowered breath"

He goes on to say that, "...we meditated together for many days, fasting but joyful in the divine and always mindful of odor."

As a matter of fact as I pointed earlier, he brought these teachings to his 12 plus Mary and his parents saying, "...know me and know the many lives of the snake, the lizard, and the beasts of all previous lives. Mine is the journey of a God. Perfection can be found through self-sacrifice."

This is well doc.u.mented but sadly, few too people understand that Jesus was no more a rabbi than me.
He was a monk, and according to Timothy, an enthusiastic nudist. "...without concern nor bashfulness, the fullness of our Lord cannot be contained by his tunic."

    Does the motivation matter?

A killing is a killing, and all victims are equally dead.

Hate crimes are just a way to provide prefered status to one class of victims over another.

For example, I hat Sammy Davis Junior music.

If I killed him would it be because I hated Jews, Blacks, Gays, or just lousy singing?

Why should one answer be more dreadful than another?
