Vatican newspaper calls fragment referring to Jesus' wife 'a fake'

By Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) - The Vatican on Friday appeared to push back on a recently publicized piece of papyrus that appears to show an early Christian referring to Jesus' wife, with its newspaper calling the fragment “a fake.”

“Substantial reasons would lead us to conclude that the papyrus is actually a clumsy counterfeit,” the Vatican’s  newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said in a Friday editorial by the newspaper’s editor.

“In other words, in any case it is a fake,” wrote L'Osservatore Romano editor-in-chief Gian Maria Vian.

The fragment referring to Jesus wife was written in Coptic, a language used by Egyptian Christians, and says in part, "Jesus said to them, 'My wife ..."

The paper is generally thought to reflect the views of Vatican officials.

5 Questions and answers about Jesus’ “wife”

Harvard Divinity School professor Karen King announced the findings of the 1.5- by 3-inch honey-colored fragment earlier this month in Rome at the International Association for Coptic Studies.

King was quick to add this discovered text "does not, however, provide evidence that the historical Jesus was married," she wrote in a draft of her analysis of the fragment set to appear in the January edition of Harvard Theological Review.

"This fragment, this new piece of papyrus evidence, does not prove that (Jesus) was married, nor does it prove that he was not married,” King said in a conference call with reporters earlier in the month. “The earliest reliable historical tradition is completely silent on that.

“So we're in the same position we were before it was found,” she continued. “We don't know if he was married or not."

In the accounts of Jesus' life in the Bible, there is no mention of his marital status, while the accounts do mention Jesus' mother, father and siblings.

Opinion: What fascination with Jesus’ “wife” tells us

The four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – tell the story of Jesus' birth and early childhood then skip to his short, three-year ministry before detailing his death and resurrection.

In its Friday editorial, the Vatican newspaper took aim at what it said was a media campaign to spread word of the papyrus despite questions about its authenticity.

“American media outlets had been alerted, a preventive press conference by Karen L. King held to prepare a global scoop which was immediately put into question by the experts,” the paper said.

Okay, Jesus was married. Mazeltov. What I really want to know is if Satan is seeing anybody? Its that time of year again you know, and I have a black cat, a pumpkin with a scary face carved into it and an open bottle of Dom Perignon...

How come the Vatican didn't give us any of those "substantial reasons"? Or did the moderators at CNN leave that out 🙂 ?

Just to be clear. Jesus did not have a wife. It would have easily been apparent in His day. Everyone would have known for the lasy 2000 years. That's not the kind of thing that can be hidden when the entire country is following you around night and day. Some who believe in you, and the rest who want to kill you. It is nothing more than another conspiracy theory that has no foundation.

It is easy enough to hide Jesus from the time shortly after his birth til he was 30 years old.

  10. Jesus is the most powerful figure known to mankind (Fact)

Ok i challenge all atheist/non-believers to a simple small short mature intellectual debate. I claim that there is a GOD, Higher Power, Intelligent Designer/Engineer, and Creator. You claim that there isnt a Creator and everything is a coincidence. (If what i say about your claims are wrong please correct me) Here are the rules: No THEORIES and no BIBLE VERSES. Proven known facts ONLY, none requiring faith. I simply ask that you consider my facts as i will yours. I will provide 10 facts in defense to my claim and you can list as much as you will.

1.The perfect unseen order of our solar system.
    2. The accurate and precise distance of our sun and it's perfect compatibility with our moon. Its unfailing rising and sustaining power.
    3. The engineering of the earth in every aspect.
    4. Nature, it's power, beauty, and contributions.
    5. Natural law.
    6. Creatures, all of their different abilities, bodies, and behaviors.
    7. The extraordinary and intelligently designed human body and mind.
    8. My user name. Jesus indeed had the most influence and biggest impact on this world than anyone in all of time.
    9. Due to how orderly and precise creation is, the chance of the big bang theory or coincidence happening is statistically 0. Scientists have come up with approximate numbers that far exceed the trillions, but these numbers are made up from their theories which is why i didnt paste the number. As of right now the chances of life forming from nothing is statistically 0.
    10. Time & Life (consciousness)

Please be respectful and list your facts.

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Not one thing on your list proves that a god exists. Not a single one.

You simply choose to believe that because we evolved to adapt to this environment that the environment was "made perfect" for us by some sky fairy. There are no facts to support this belief. There is no evidence that this planet is the only one with life, nor is there any evidence that it was placed here so we would exist.

I am not saying that I disagree with you but you have a hole in your facts. Not one of those 10 facts say how Jesus did it?

Thanks for not doing the impossible. Which is providing the smalles shred of evidence or providing the simplest fact proving the non-existence of a Creator. Have a blessed day.

"...The perfect unseen order of our solar system..."

Guess that explains all of the asteroids, meteors, comets and all of the other debris floating around in space apparently left over from Creation. Guess the creator decided it didn't need to clean up the site after construction was completed.

But perfect order? I think not.

    • Quantumgreen

Yes, the universe proceeds according to natural law–the laws of physics. And those same laws mean that creating matter out of nothing (feeding the 5,000), changing water into wine, and the resurrection are impossible. Step outside. Nature exists without any supernatural presence. If you stepped outside in ancient times, you'd see the same nature and no supernatural things happening.

    • TruthInAtheism

      Sorry JITMPFKTM(F),

The burden of proof is upon YOU. Not unbelievers. We cannot prove a god "does not exist" because it is impossible. Prove a leprechaun does not exist, and then we'll talk.

Present one shred of solid evidence that your god exists, and then we'll talk.

Stop presenting unprovable and supernatural and unobservable beliefs as "facts" and then we'll talk.

May the sacred horse of Bathsheba provide wealth for your house. Exactly the same as "have a blessed day."

    • Cted

1.How do you know it's perfect if it's unseen. There isn't order to it at all.
      2. What is so precise about it? If the sun were farther and the earth cooler humans would have evolved differently it the sun woudl still be the perfect distance from earth.
      3. What engineering? It's a sphere... gravity makes spheres.
      4. Again, huh? how is this a fact. Nature is powerful, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
      5. What now? What do you mean natural law, what natural law? the laws of physics?
      6. Ok, why does that require anything supernatural. stating they exist is not an argument
      7. It is what now? Is that why we eat breath and talk throught the same hole? Intelligently designed to choke? is that why reproduction and elimination share the same organs? Really? Why do we have disease if we are perfectly designed? why do we have birth defects and flaws? Why do we have appendixes and acne?
      8. Debatable, but big impact doesn't mean anything. Hitler had a big impact. And someone had to have the biggest by definition.
      9. It is not at all orderly or precise. you are wrong, it is not conincidence adn the Big bang is pretty settled science. life didn't form from nothing, it formed from chemicals. Again you aren't making sense.
      10. How we percieve time is relative to us, and consiousness is us, why does that require anything but us? Perhaps we created consiousness... is that any different from imagining a god that did?

So 1 question for you. If the universe can't come from nothing, then what did god come from? If you say nothing, or "He always existed" then I can simply ignore god and apply that to the universe, it came from nothing, or it always existed – no god needed.

Some would argue that a different diety was responsible. Some would argue that it is all random chance. No matter what diety (if any) that anyone selects it will become our belief. Beliefs unfortunately are not able to be proven or disproven, thats why they are beliefs.

      October 8, 2012 at 8:00 am |
    • End Religion

No point. You provide a false and negative claim for us to defend which leaves no ground for debate. We do not know if there was a creator, and cannot prove the negative, however we see no evidence pointing to it. Evolution is a fact inasmuch as we rely on any established scientific theory as fact and involves little if any coincidence.

The meat of all this is, if you assert an overwhelming theory as fact then you need overwhelming evidence in support, otherwise it remains a belief or guess. You do not have such evidence.

It's been debated to death, and as time goes on your side of the debate gets increasingly tenuous. These things end in "we'll have to agree to disagree" because, when faced with facts, you will like all others before you eventually shrink into Ad Hoc Hypothesis mode then finally to asserting something wildly outside the natural world, which is the religious safety net when it comes to logic.

You have no argument for your case aside from magic, and magic we do not accept.

      1. our solar system is not perfect.
      2. The distance does not stay the same during the day/year.
      3. there is no proof of any engineering.
      4. Yes it's nice....so what does that proof?
      5. there is only one law...the law og the strongest.
      6. Al in evolution.
      7. yes it's extraordinary, but no proof of intelligently designed.
      8. Not true, and mostly in a bad way.
      9. the big bang is already proven, and if nothing can come from nothing than where did your god came from?
The starting point is always nothing.

Any first semester student in textual criticism would have identified this as a fake. Greek UNCIALS were NEVER written on Papyrus, or anything other than vellum, in this case the Greek characters would have been lower case. 2nd. Note there are no gaps anywhere between the letters. – tends to lend to a great amount of confusion- because where does one word begin and another end, adding that to the fact that it is one fragment – you could assume that Jesus is a surfer in LA fighting vampires. One point that is missed, the New Testament refers to the Church as Christ's Bride. This is a spiritual relationship and some groups consider it as allegorical. Polycarp and Ignaitius had epistles written to churches and referred to the Church as Christ's Bride. We just happen to have the whole epislte and therefore the context. If one were to just have a fragment, then one can see the confusion from that.

Now most of you will say, she is from Harvard, therefore she must know more than you. One would think, but most people have been taught critical thinking- that being take the source of the information. So at face value – she is a more credible source than me. But LOGICAL thinking and an inquiring mind will further investigate the facts that I have added. That is what CNN and these people pushing this garbage are expecting. You will take the judgements of the "experts" at face value and discourage your own independent analysis. Critical Thinking is the recipe to develop sheep.

All the Atheists on this blog, for something that does not exist, you seem to be spending a lot of time on it. Are there not homeless or people starving in you area? Can you not make your world a better place by helping your fellow man? Are they people who have trouble reading that you can teach to read? Strange your belief system encourages you to sit on your brains and constantly "preach" the gospel that there is no God.

The atheist is the fanatic. Let's just say for argument that you know only 1/2 of all the knowledge of the Universe. Are you saying that God could not be in the 1/2 that you "don't" know? Furthermore, your hatred is not of God but Christianity. That is what you are really going after with your ridiculous 'Crusade". Oh yes from time to time you might take a swipe at Islam, but as you found here in Pennsylvania, when you take a swipe at Islam, the Muslims will come after you and hurt you, and the courts will protect the Muslim. Mechanicsburg, PA, – Halloween 2011 – if you want the incident.

And a NOTE TO CNN. This blog is about RELIGION- what is your intent? to try to destroy the faith of believers. Why not give the ATHEISTS their own blog . Or if that is not practical because of the smallness of the atheistic population:- why not have a long discussion of all the times atheistic regimes had power – China, USSR, CUBA, all the states in the horn of Africa that were Soviet satellites for a time (Ethiopia, Somalia), the ANC and how they have destroyed Rhodesia, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, North Korea and Republican France (1791-1800). All in the name of atheism – religion is the opiate of the people. What is the death toll so far – 100-150 million? What about the residual death tolls – the thousands that died in Ethiopia and Somaila after. Or have a discussion about Charities that were started by atheists (and please don't include the ACLU) – I am talking a charity that feeds the hungry and provides housing to the homeless. I am not talking secular, I am talking Atheistic. There are not many. Heck, Atheists don't have the money and the desire to contribute for their own conventions – as I recall they had to cancel this years for lack of funds. Instead of looking at these very relevant stories – you continue these ridiculous blogs about Einstein and his lack of believing in God.

I personally believe most atheists are atheist not for a great epiphany, but because they are angry at their life or they want the freedom to do some immoral act, but God is in the way. So they get rid of God. Let's face it, the overall way atheists are acting can only be described as neurotic- they certainly do have a chip on their shoulder- and for something they say does not exist

As an atheist myself, I cringe at those who attack the faithful and their beliefs. Live and let live I say.

I believe much of the problem stems from the somewhat recent (well started with Reagan) Republican tendency to cater to the religious right to get votes. Once elected officials stepped up efforts to manipulate voting results in this way, then "live and let live" was no longer the order of the day.

Time for us all to go back to believing or not believing but more importantly, recognizing that the rights of one stop where the nose of the other begins.

I am not one myself, but I know several, and they are among the most community minded people I know, involved in food banks, domestic violence shelters, animal shelters, back to schools drives, etc. By your argument the fact that you have time to be on the internet and condem them, means you are not doing any of the things you say they should doing. So get off your butt and do them too.

A fundamental misunderstanding. There is usually no great epiphany. Apparently many atheists come to it over some period of disillusionment and learning. However, we'll soon be entering a period where more atheists are born into it, and then my friend, religion will be in its death throe.

There is no anger at life required for atheism. Any hate, anger and violence comes from the religious.

Morality does not come from religion. Morality: Using empathy as a guide for human interaction. AKA, "treat others the way you want to be treated" and "put yourself in my shoes".

Karen Wynn of Yale has a study showing even babies have an idea of wrong versus right. Neuroscientist Christian Keysers has done research to show that the brain of those who see others receiving pain themselves have similar neurological responses. There is a curve to empathy; some feel it more than others. But it certainly doesn't come from a hateful book about imaginary people.

Religion is manmade and as such it is nothing but some peoples need/desire to fill in the blanks. You can quote scripture all day long if you want, that doesnt make it true.

I understand that questioning the perceived foundation of your existence appears frightening but once you free yourself of the shackles of mind control life really does become much more full and exciting.

I have been subjected to religion all my life and it still hasnt made its case for me. And I have looked at it. On the other hand, knowledge and reason provides me with a real and firm foundation on which to build my life.

  20. Jesus is the most powerful figure known to mankind (Fact)

There is evidence that GOD is distant from this world, but no evidence that He does not exist. GOD's government does not exist in this world, there is also evidence of this. GOD is allowing mankinds self-rule to continue until the time He has appointed. Look around you look at the world yesterday and today. Look at the governments all around the world. Are they not corrupt? This world is full of violence, lust, envy, confusion, greed, pride, lies, hatred, and death. Man alone brought forth the destruction of the world through an extraterrestrial named satan. The world crys out for the government of GOD and His justice. The world crys out for the Kingdom of GOD whos Eternal Law is Love in every aspect. Jesus Christ left this world with one command, to love. He said love as He has loved. "What greater love is there then the love of someone freely giving up their life for a friend?" – Jesus. This is the Etern Law in the Kingdom of GOD, this is the law man has forsaken, and it is this law that will judge each and every person. Soon all will change, mankinds self-rule is almost up. The end is near and the government of GOD draws near, the Kingdom is at hand. Jesus warnings are becoming more frequent and growing more severe. Those who have ears hear His words, those who have life repent and turn to Christ Jesus earths only hope. None will deny the power of this new one world order, and all knees will bow to the Kingship of the Lord of all lords. May the grace of the Almighty be with you all. John 8 vs 47-"He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."

"This world is full of violence, lust, envy, confusion, greed, pride, lies, hatred, and death. Man alone brought forth the destruction of the world through an extraterrestrial named Satan."

Aren’t they mostly Christians? P.S. Satan should be capitalized

Matthew 7 vs 21-"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." oh and im sorry satan. I hope me putting a lower case "s" helps you sleep better at night 🙂

    • End Religion

Just like Jigsaw from the movie Saw, god supposedly puts a game in motion, forcing people to choose his way or torture. While the poor cattle in the movie indeed get to "exercise free will" they've still been bound into a game against their choice, then forced to play by its rules.

And you call this god a loving god... lol.. He's a horror movie monster.
