Viral and profane pro-Obama ads channel tradition of Jewish humor

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – When it comes to reaching voters, the co-founders of a Jewish super PAC aimed at re-electing President Barack Obama have this tip for you: Use humor, even if it isn’t kosher.

Two campaign videos produced by the Jewish Council for Education and Research – one featuring actor Samuel L. Jackson, the other comedian Sarah Silverman – have received a flood of attention over the past few weeks. A foul-mouthed Silverman pushes people to do whatever it takes to make it to the polls in spite of voter ID laws, while an uncensored Jackson orders disenchanted Obama supporters to “wake the f*** up” and get to work.

While Silverman warns viewers about being kept out of the polls, introducing herself as “your Jewish friend Sarah," Jackson, who voiced the recent bedtime story for parents “Go the F**k to Sleep,” rhymes his warning to voters, in a video that's been seen over a million times on YouTube.

“We're all on our way if Romney has his way; he's against safety nets. If you fall, tough luck; so I strongly suggest that you wake the f*** up.”

The unique approach is rooted in a “tradition of Jewish humor,” said Mik Moore, co-founder of the super PAC, which has raised over $200,000 so far this election cycle and has dedicated itself to advancing issues that Jewish voters are concerned about. He added that these ads were “trying to tap into” that tradition.

Moore, a political and communications campaign strategist, launched the group in 2008 with Ari Wallach, a consultant and social entrepreneur. It was in response to what they saw as a distortion of then-candidate Obama’s character and record, particularly on issues that were important to Jewish voters.

The group’s signature has been its comedic productions. In 2008, Silverman got on board, becoming the face and attitude behind “The Great Schlep,” a viral video aimed at getting Jewish grandchildren to travel to Florida, visit their grandparents and persuade them to vote for Obama.

In the video, Silverman jokes about the large concentration of older Jews in Florida, playing up the stereotypes associated with Jewish grandparents living there, a love for tracksuits being just one of them.

“If you knew that visiting your grandparents could change the world, would you do it?” asks Silverman, who writes her own videos. “Of course you would. You’d have to be a douchenozzle not to.”

Moore and Wallach know Silverman’s humor is, in many ways, self-deprecating to Jews. But according to the duo, that is a staple of Jewish humor.

“This is the humor that we were raised on; it resonates with us,” Wallach said. “Jewish humor is inherently never mean or vindictive or about making fun of anyone. It is about the kind of absurdity that is life.”

Jewish humor traces its roots to some of the religion’s founding documents.

In an essay on biblical humor, Hershey H. Friedman, a professor of marketing at the City University of New York, outlines this deep-rooted tradition.

“The Hebrew Bible employs many sorts of humor, but its purpose is not to entertain,” writes Friedman. “Much of the humor found in the Hebrew Bible has a purpose: To demonstrate that evil is wrong and even ludicrous, at times. The punishments meted out to wrongdoers are often designed to mock them and to hoist them by their own petards.”

In the Book of Proverbs, for example, fools, lazy people and senseless women are all openly made fun of.

“Like snow in the summer and like rain at harvest, so is honor unbefitting for a fool,” reads Proverbs 26:3. “It is better to live on a corner of a roof than in a house of companionship with a quarrelsome wife,” Proverbs 25:24 says.

Jewish humor has changed a great deal from the time of Moses, but the principles of being self-deprecating and absurd remain. Moore says the thing that separates Jewish comedy is the way such comedians play up their identities.

“Some Jewish performers hide their Jewishness to fit in,” Moore said. “Jewish comics do the opposite. It is the nature of their comedy. You accept whatever it is you are.”

And that’s what made Silverman a perfect partner in this super PAC venture.

Her language may not be kosher for all, but Wallach says the decision to stick with Silverman and work with Jackson was a calculated one. The group isn't not making these ads for children or seniors but rather for the millions who have made its videos viral.

Going forward, Moore says, the group plans to build websites around issues it views as important, possibly venture into print advertising and, of course, roll out more videos. Already, he says, it has about half a dozen more in mind.

I wonder when, if ever, Romney will disclose the details of his economic plan. People are already starting to vote. He says big tax cuts for the rich, more money to the defense department and he will balance the budget. The arithmetic does not work. He is going to have to get rid of the mortgage deduction and the charity deduction.

Lets face it folks, Romney screwed up. He knows those lower 47% so well, shame it don't know the upper 1% as well. He said what was on his mind, in his heart, and obviously on his agenda until congress majority whether it be republican or democrat help him to do a flip-flop. I would rather have someone in office who sticks to his ideals throughout the process, which is why he or she gets voted in. Heck why would people vote for Romney who did not vote for McCain. Heck I voted McCain over Romney and Obama. President got my vote this time.

After Obama has continually stabbed Israel, our strongest ally in the middle east, in the back during his term in the WH, and has supported Muslims to all of our detriment, why would ANY sane Jew vote for Obama? This makes no sense whatsoever. For that matter, why would any sane voter re-elect Obama? He has been an abysmal failure as president, and has given us no reason whatsoever to believe that he could or would do any better if given another four years. Yes, the voters DO need to wake up, and vote for Romney!!!

So this is the person that the sheeple will elect for President, someone who will teach them foul language and rudeness. Then they will complain that it isn't their fault, the television and public school system teaches them that. Then they will complain that their children lack respect and blame the same sources. Then bad table manners and filthiness, no responsibility on the parents for anything. Vote for Obama to make America the ghetto the world can point to.

I don't think President Obama has anything to do with young people using profanity – they learn it from each other and use it pretty much all the time, unless they're visiting their grandparents, talking with their boss, or their parents groan enough to make them notice their parents don't like it. Our kids use it and we never used it at home and we don't condone it and freaked out if they ever forgot and used that language around their grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. You can't blame this on President Obama – my kids were teenagers when Bush was president.

Do you really think some rich white guy is going to be trying to teach ghetto kids better manners and respect. Yea right! Poor kids will be so low on Romney's radar. He will tell them they are on their own. So don't act like Romney is going to be so caring of anyone in the poor and middle classes. It's just not going to happen. He is too arrogant and power hungry. I guess because Obama is the black guy our kids will automatically be learning profanity and lack of class right? You will also claim people are always claiming racism towards people like yourself. That's because you are. What other reason would you have to state your absolutely silly thoughts about the President teaching our kids to use profanity and other negative things? There just is no basis for it. He has never cussed at kids or any American for that matter. More of the typical crazy right mess. Let's throw all kinds of stuff and see if any of it sticks.

Yeah lets double down on corporate welfare. Free money in the form of huge tax cuts. Who pays for that. The middle class.
Supposedly it's an investment in business so that business will some how be nice and trickle their great fortune down. Yeah right, that has worked out so well in the past, especially after a recession when employers have laid off large percentages of their workforce. They are not going to hire back that cut force now that they see they can make people work longer for less money and less staff. They will pocket those tax cuts or invest it and make more money. Meanwhile the middle class and poor have to pay their regular fair share of tax, no big breaks during already tough times making it paycheck to paycheck. The Republican policies just don't make sense, unless you are a member of the top 1% of Americans. The Republican party definitely has your back if you are wealthy.

Primitive narcissistic instincts are driving this election. No President is able to wave a magic wand and fulfill all of your dreams. It takes patience and tolerance. Jesus himself taught us tolerance. Read the message of the NT.

"They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity–for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him." Peter 2:19. Your master is your intolerance and impatience.

"From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit." Jeremiah 6:13. Those who are impatient and intolerant are the most likely to be decieved. They do not have the patience and discipline to seek the truth.

"They mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error." 2 Peter 2:18. We have just escaped eight years of Bush II, his foreign policy and his economic policy. If President Obama is re-elected we will be very close to escaping the demagoguery of those noisy rigid right wing ideologues whose primary objective from the beginning of his tenure in office was to see that President Obama was made a one term President. 2 Peter 2:18 tells me all I need to know.

Who has stretched a war he said he would stop early in his term in to teh next term in Afghanistan? Obama. Who promised first day in office Gitmo would be shut down within 1 year by exective order? Obama. Almost 4 years later and Gitmo same as before. Ys he got bin Ladan, but how long to get Libya killers he promised to get? We have not even seen consulate yet. When he leaves office in 2016 and the world doesn't end, he will somehow have disproved Christianity itself. • Smako

Sortakinda hit it right on the head. American Royalty is Honey Boo Boos mother. The masses get their news from Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel. Nobody thinks for themselves anymore, people with Obama bumperstickers going to the unemployment office or going to the church food pantries saying they are better off than they were four years ago. The drum major of them all, Oprah Winfrey is surprisingly silent on her candidate this season, surprising because she was so loud before, and especially surprising because it's Oprah.

      October 2, 2012 at 11:12 am |
    • Jen L

Failing to bow to every whim of the warmongering of an ally doesn't make someone antisemitic. And the idea that Obama hates white people?

Well, then why is he for the safety net, which is used by more whites than anyone else, despite what many choose to convince themselves of.

As for this being a sign of what a bad society we are, give me a break. Do you know what a sign of a bad society is? Complaining about speech that you are opposed to while hiding behind an excuse that you're offended by the colorful language of a satirist. If you have a problem with the points of the ads, state that.

      October 2, 2012 at 11:17 am |
    • Jen L

ROFL at smako! Apparently, it's inconceivable that the people saying that they are better off than they were before are employed. It's also apparently inconceivable that people in the church food line were there before as well and have had their lives change for the better in some other way.

Speaking of people being sheep, if the only people who like Obama are the unemployed and people on food stamps, why is he polling at over 50% of the US population, when the set of people unemployed or on food stamps is at most 20% if both groups are mutually exclusive?

Oh right, because that's what Fox News told you.

It's called projection, smako. You might want to look it up.

    • Jen L

Lili, no one claimed that voting for Romney made you white trash, so why are you so concerned that that's the implication of your vote?

Obama has repeatedly tried to implement job plans and the Republicans have stopped him on nearly every bill, behavior that makes you want to reward them with your votes. That's not very logical.

As for Romney being a decent guy, that's going to depend on your definition of decent. If your definition of decent is "God fearing," then yes, he's decent. If your definition of decent is "actually follows the words of Jesus or any other major religious figure," then no, he's not decent. There's a difference between yelling about how much you love God and actually behaving the way that God said to behave towards people who aren't in your immediate family.

I honestly don't care if the man hasn't gotten a divorce; neither has Obama. He thinks that it's completely moral to suck the life out of companies for his own personal profit and at the expense of the employees, and then once he's forced them out of work, moral to deny them food aid, housing aid, and unemployment check even though they've paid a higher percentage of their income towards taxes than he has. If that's "decent" you need to check your definition.

Obama added more to the deficit than all other presidents combined. He also made 138 executive orders, all other presidents combined only made 122. Obama was never qualified to be president. He hides his passed and most think he is trying to destroy America. Romney is a great business man and proven leader. Obama and the democrats running congress since 2007 caused and continue to cause economic and social problems. We need a leader that takes responsibility, not give BLAME. The liberal media states the race is close; that means Romney should be 10 point up.

Instead of reading chain emails you get spammed to your inbox and taking them as gospel, try actually researching it first. Snopes refutes everything you claim.

    • Best Choice

I'm going to call you on that one. Obama has not cut the military one iota as of yet although we go into reconciliation and there will be defense cuts if both parties can't agree how to target the cuts more equitably.

Second, providing a path to citizenship for those who came here illegally but are working and paying taxes is good public policy. The fact of the matter is they are not "leaching" our tax money because they have taxes withheld from their income and never ask for refuinds for fear of being discovered.

Third, the Affordable Healthcare Act, or "Obamacare" as stupid people like to put it, is not a "total joke". The bill is a sensible way to get health care costs under control and to prevent insurance compnaies from using preexisting conditions as a pretext to deny or limit coverage.

In terms of leadership he has provided more that the buffoon who was in office before. He rescued the auto industry, prevented a financial catastrophe caused by Republican deregulation of the banking industry, he has provided a timetable for getting our troops home from Afghanistan and ended the unnecessary war in Iraq, and most importantly, we got Bin Laden under his watch.

As for Jan, I'd suggest you take a look at the accounting tricks the Bush administration used to keep those unnecessary wars off the books. This is the main reason our deficit is so high. But I can see you're not one to let the facts get in the way of a good rant so I'm proibably wasting my time trying to explain this to a simpleton like yourself.

I only have one more thing to say: FOUR MORE YEARS!

Lol brad, he said he would try to balance the BUDGET not cut debt. It keeps getting slandered by republicans that he has "expanded the debt more than every other president COMBINED." and this is a lie, considering that the debt has gone up around 5-6 trillion, and the total debt is 16 trillion. Yes, the debt has gone up, but what do you expect when 1. We have the LOWEST TAX RATE IN US HISTORY (bush tax cuts) 2. Two unfunded wars 3. Worst economy since the great depression.

So you republicans are MAD because he didn't clean up your mess fast enough.

I'm sorry, "Jan", but your assertion regarding President Obama and the effects on the national debt attributable to his administration is a falsehood. The degree to which your assertion may represent a truth is 0.0. To help you understand the degree to which your assertions may represent a truth, I will access my Idiomatic Expression Equivalency module (IEE). Using my IEE module, the expression that best matches the degree to which your assertion may represent a truths is: "TOTAL FAIL".

I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book might help you overcome this problem:

Iran isn't building nukes. The rate of spending increase under Obama is the lowest of any President in decades. Our military budget is unnecessary and out of control. He has increased immigration enforcement despite not getting a significantly larger budget to do so.

Any more Fox News talking points that you want to recite for people who live in reality to debunk?

Why don't you vote for me as president?

I will create 15 million jobs in the next 4 years and I will make everyone who is poor to become rich!

Would you believe me and vote for me as president??? Probably not, because I did not say any specifics on how I will do that.

So, the same way I will not vote for Romney just because he keeps repeating that he will create jobs and make American economy grow. I don't believe his just for saying it, i need him to explain how he will do it.

Class warfare is evident on these pages. It is being waged by the Romney supporters. After all, what else can they do but follow Romney's lead? He thought it and then said it. 47% of this country are lower class..

    October 2, 2012 at 10:20 am |
    • DanW

WachetAuf, Romney did NOT say that the 47% are lower class, just that they think they are victims, don't take personal responsibility and expect the government to take care of them. After all, 4000 millionaire households are among the 47%, and you don't think Romney would consider his buds to be lower class, do you?

      October 2, 2012 at 10:38 am |

Yeah that lousy 47%. Those welfare leeches like senior citizens and people in the military.

The R-Wing have nothing but generalizations as to out our President .. thing is Romney only has generalizations as to why he would be better ... I can think of 47% of reasons why Romney should go home .. stay home and count his money … folks that rich white man doesn’t care

you are sadly mistaken when you think any politician really cares about you personally.

A better question – who's behind the mass mailings of the slander that is – "Dreams of my real father". Digging out the authors of anonymous attempts at character assassination – and their motivations – seems more worthy than simply reporting information that ANYONE could have found on their own. I also admit it's harder – but it IS journalism....
