Viral and profane pro-Obama ads channel tradition of Jewish humor

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – When it comes to reaching voters, the co-founders of a Jewish super PAC aimed at re-electing President Barack Obama have this tip for you: Use humor, even if it isn’t kosher.

Two campaign videos produced by the Jewish Council for Education and Research – one featuring actor Samuel L. Jackson, the other comedian Sarah Silverman – have received a flood of attention over the past few weeks. A foul-mouthed Silverman pushes people to do whatever it takes to make it to the polls in spite of voter ID laws, while an uncensored Jackson orders disenchanted Obama supporters to “wake the f*** up” and get to work.

While Silverman warns viewers about being kept out of the polls, introducing herself as “your Jewish friend Sarah," Jackson, who voiced the recent bedtime story for parents “Go the F**k to Sleep,” rhymes his warning to voters, in a video that's been seen over a million times on YouTube.

“We're all on our way if Romney has his way; he's against safety nets. If you fall, tough luck; so I strongly suggest that you wake the f*** up.”

The unique approach is rooted in a “tradition of Jewish humor,” said Mik Moore, co-founder of the super PAC, which has raised over $200,000 so far this election cycle and has dedicated itself to advancing issues that Jewish voters are concerned about. He added that these ads were “trying to tap into” that tradition.

Moore, a political and communications campaign strategist, launched the group in 2008 with Ari Wallach, a consultant and social entrepreneur. It was in response to what they saw as a distortion of then-candidate Obama’s character and record, particularly on issues that were important to Jewish voters.

The group’s signature has been its comedic productions. In 2008, Silverman got on board, becoming the face and attitude behind “The Great Schlep,” a viral video aimed at getting Jewish grandchildren to travel to Florida, visit their grandparents and persuade them to vote for Obama.

In the video, Silverman jokes about the large concentration of older Jews in Florida, playing up the stereotypes associated with Jewish grandparents living there, a love for tracksuits being just one of them.

“If you knew that visiting your grandparents could change the world, would you do it?” asks Silverman, who writes her own videos. “Of course you would. You’d have to be a douchenozzle not to.”

Moore and Wallach know Silverman’s humor is, in many ways, self-deprecating to Jews. But according to the duo, that is a staple of Jewish humor.

“This is the humor that we were raised on; it resonates with us,” Wallach said. “Jewish humor is inherently never mean or vindictive or about making fun of anyone. It is about the kind of absurdity that is life.”

Jewish humor traces its roots to some of the religion’s founding documents.

In an essay on biblical humor, Hershey H. Friedman, a professor of marketing at the City University of New York, outlines this deep-rooted tradition.

“The Hebrew Bible employs many sorts of humor, but its purpose is not to entertain,” writes Friedman. “Much of the humor found in the Hebrew Bible has a purpose: To demonstrate that evil is wrong and even ludicrous, at times. The punishments meted out to wrongdoers are often designed to mock them and to hoist them by their own petards.”

In the Book of Proverbs, for example, fools, lazy people and senseless women are all openly made fun of.

“Like snow in the summer and like rain at harvest, so is honor unbefitting for a fool,” reads Proverbs 26:3. “It is better to live on a corner of a roof than in a house of companionship with a quarrelsome wife,” Proverbs 25:24 says.

Jewish humor has changed a great deal from the time of Moses, but the principles of being self-deprecating and absurd remain. Moore says the thing that separates Jewish comedy is the way such comedians play up their identities.

“Some Jewish performers hide their Jewishness to fit in,” Moore said. “Jewish comics do the opposite. It is the nature of their comedy. You accept whatever it is you are.”

And that’s what made Silverman a perfect partner in this super PAC venture.

Her language may not be kosher for all, but Wallach says the decision to stick with Silverman and work with Jackson was a calculated one. The group isn't not making these ads for children or seniors but rather for the millions who have made its videos viral.

Going forward, Moore says, the group plans to build websites around issues it views as important, possibly venture into print advertising and, of course, roll out more videos. Already, he says, it has about half a dozen more in mind.

And with your clever reference to liberals, you think you have a clue as to either? What's it like to be oblivious?

It got a rise out of you. I'd call that mission accomplished, libt@rd.

Liberals like to spout off that they have facts on their side, right? Here are a few fun ones...
    For Hispanics:
-Obama has deported Hispanics at 1.5 times the rate of Bush. Then when the election came rolling around, he granted amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants expecting the Latin community to forget.
-Fast and Furious was started under the Obama administration despite what he says. Mexican drug runners were given american guns by our administration without tracking and these guns were used to murder dozens of Mexicans

    For the Jewish Community:
-Wants Israel to go back to 1967 borders
-He repeatedly sympathizes with Muslims while mocking Netanyahu

    For Catholics
    -He's pro choice
    -He supports gay marriage
Your church does not support these things and is suing the fed's for infringing on religious freedoms by indirectly forcing them to provide birth control.

So why exactly does Obama have such a big lead in these 3 demographics? Is it because Sarah Silverman is funny and crude?

I wouldn't be depending on CNN for anything other than re-electing Obama. That is their one and only mission. Journalism is dead (and has been for a long time) at CNN.

What is hateful about pointing out laws designed to make it difficult for certain demographics to vote? I'd say if anything is hateful, it is disenfranchising any voters. What kind of democracy is this when voter ID laws are written and district lines are drawn to favor one party or another? This is not democracy, and this is not the American way.

      October 1, 2012 at 5:31 pm |

That funding is going to the nations; and only one of them has a Muslim Brotherhood leadership (democratically elected I might add). The budget for aid to Israel is about $3billion a year – they typically get more and the US pays interest as we borrow most of our spending. So that way exceeds anything going to any other country and has done since Israel has existed.

      Tom –

There are a few issues with your statements:

      1. You mentioned Obama is in bed with the Muslim Brotherhood. What exactly do you mean by "in bed"? If you mean Obama supports the Muslim Brotherhood & does their bidding, how about some credible evidence? A link would be great, as I've seen no evidence to support this claim other than from crackpot blogs.

      2. You mentioned Obama hates Israel. What exactly brings you to that conclusion? I find it hard to believe that Obama hates any ally of ours, but sure folks would be willing to listen if you have a credible link to backup your claim.

      3. You mentioned Obama hates Netanyahu. Has Obama actually said he feels this way? (I've never seen that.) I'm assuming you must be basing this on Obama's actions.... what specific actions has Obama taken that leads one to be confident he 'hates' Netanyahu?

And just a final question: If Israel takes it upon themselves to attack Iran, do YOU think our troops should immediately go to war & shed their blood fighting Iran? Personally, I think the answer to that question is "it depends", and not "yes."

      Thanks!

      October 1, 2012 at 5:46 pm |
    • Ztom

Maybe they support them because they see through the amateur attempts to make it sound like Obama supports the Muslim brotherhood and hates Israel.

Guess they are too smart to fall for those empty accusations.

At least that is my guess as to why they support Obama. That and the fact that many on the religious right hold Jews in contempt.

    • Tom in ATL

@Veritas - thank you, you checked your figures. So is it ok to give millions to a Muslim movement (Muslim Brotherhood elected officials or not!) that's sole mission is to kill Americans (Infidels)? You don't even have to be a Christian, they'll behead you just for being an American! Why would we give them anything? Have you read their Muslim nation plans? It's not a secret. They're very open about their published plan to infiltrate the US and overtake our culture. They hit through the UN with their 'anti hate speech' legislation to curb our First Amendment free speech rights. And we let Ahmadinejad come into our country and tell us he's ready to wipe out all Israel. It's frightening how asleep we are. And it's this president who keeps apologizing for our behavior and lack of respect for Mohammed. Unbelievable.

      @ Tom -
      Seriously.
Iran hasn't attacked anyone for over 200 years.
Dr. Ahmadinejad did not say that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map, you can find the entire translation instead of the edited version that was on major network channels. He said ZIONISM needed to be wiped from the pages of history, just like Nazism, just like Communism – these are failed social experiments.
Zionism is a POLITICAL ideology, not a religion, not an ethnicity. He wasn't speaking of Jews. He never once said he wanted to kill Jews.

If you believe that it is our rights as US citizens (or a citizen of another country) to protect ourselves from possible invasion, then every country has that right. You cannot demand a RIGHT for yourself and your people, and not expect that another country would want the same Right.

If you don't know what Israeli leaders have claimed from almost the inspection of the creation of the State of Israel, then you should look of David Ben-Gurion, as they plan to take the land from the Tigris to the Euphrates– all of which are theaters of war at this time.

Turn off your TV - Get sources that range from a wide variety. You are being lied to. You are being asked to kill innocent people, to wipe out yet more nations.

If this type of ads were run by anyone affiliated with the GOP they would be deemed racist, a stereotyping characature of Jews, vile, profane, disgusting and the left would be ready to personally affiliate the GOP candidate with the KKK over it. I have a sense of humor, too, but the political correctness push of the left has made it entirely inappropriate for them to run this type of ads. Funny how the left claim to be the party for acceptance – they'll wave a gay pride banner all day, get all riled up about bullying, women's rights, villify anyone who has a negative word about muslims – but they openly disparage mormons and Catholics or any other strong Christian faiths and not view stereotyping of jews as "funny". The left casts harsh judgement on any woman in America who has conservative values, but champions repression of women around the world, claiming American has no right to infringe on "cultures" that repress women to the point of covering them in black fabric head to toe, treating them like chattle or livestock, preventing them from getting an education and beating them for offenses like getting in a car with a non-relative, or talking to a boy. Wake up, people.

So they're saying Jewish people can't be humorous without being potty mouthed about it? If I were on the fence, this would take my vote away from Obama and it sure takes me away from anyone associated with it. It's so unfortunate that some people have such limited vocabulary that they can't make a point without vulgarity. Add this to the "humorous" video of young men rapping and grabbing their crotches as the poorest of taste. I hope nobody is so desperate for votes that they think getting votes from the lowlifes that appreciate garbage like this are worth getting.

I'm still not entirely which of the candidates I'm gonna support, but I will say that blanket comments about any party are pretty silly and indicative of what is really "wrong" with this country. People like this Bob Jones or any of the people on the other side are on here just spewing insults and disrespect to people of differing beliefs who, if not for the anonymity of the internet you may very well be friends with... it's just sad to see that this is where the state of public discourse has ended up... everyone calling each other retards and morons because someone who loves their country as much as you happens to disagree... you should all grow up because I'd imagine that if you saw your young children or grandchildren behaving like this over sports or video games you'd be appalled. It's really quite sad.

I can't believe Jews in America are still supporting Obama after he has been snubbing Netanyahu for so long. He will not be there when Israel needs him. Obama is a Muslim sympathizer and is more concerned about being their buddy than he is about being Israels buddy. I would really like to hear feedback from a Jewish or Israeli reader on this. I believe our support of Isreal should be unflinching and whole hearted. That is the only thing that will keep Iran and others at bay. Anyuthing else could lead to WW3.

He didn't snub him. That is just stuff Republicans have made up. They talk on the phone all the time. I don't know why Republicans bow to Israel so much and then complain Obama is doing that when he just talks to another leader.

Snubbing? How much aid does the USA provide to Israel each year. The Obama budget for 2013 has slightly over $3billion in aid for Israel. Israel is the largest recipient of US aid for the period that it has existed.

The ambivalence in the historic relationships between Jews and blacks is manifest in Obama's political stance. That Netanyahu is often pushy, crass, domineering and demanding provides Obama with a justification for his ambivalence. Obama is not going to be a Sabbath goy no matter what, except to get elected.

    • jesse

actually, I take that back... I think liberals are great and the reality is, I just kind of resent people with a thoughtful insight on things because I'm incapable of thinking for myself... I have to get all of my talking points from people like Rush Limbaugh, who even I know is a liar.

I would normally characterize Ms. Silverman as a self-loathing Jewish person, but she has also shown to be a Christian-loathing person – consider for example her cable special "Jesus is Magic", in which she openly mocks the Christian's belief in Christ as a deity. Her humor reflects more of an internal conflict and instability, than a true satirist or comedienne. People of all faiths should stop dignifying her as an artist. How hard is it to shock?
