Viral and profane pro-Obama ads channel tradition of Jewish humor

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – When it comes to reaching voters, the co-founders of a Jewish super PAC aimed at re-electing President Barack Obama have this tip for you: Use humor, even if it isn’t kosher.

Two campaign videos produced by the Jewish Council for Education and Research – one featuring actor Samuel L. Jackson, the other comedian Sarah Silverman – have received a flood of attention over the past few weeks. A foul-mouthed Silverman pushes people to do whatever it takes to make it to the polls in spite of voter ID laws, while an uncensored Jackson orders disenchanted Obama supporters to “wake the f*** up” and get to work.

While Silverman warns viewers about being kept out of the polls, introducing herself as “your Jewish friend Sarah," Jackson, who voiced the recent bedtime story for parents “Go the F**k to Sleep,” rhymes his warning to voters, in a video that's been seen over a million times on YouTube.

“We're all on our way if Romney has his way; he's against safety nets. If you fall, tough luck; so I strongly suggest that you wake the f*** up.”

The unique approach is rooted in a “tradition of Jewish humor,” said Mik Moore, co-founder of the super PAC, which has raised over $200,000 so far this election cycle and has dedicated itself to advancing issues that Jewish voters are concerned about. He added that these ads were “trying to tap into” that tradition.

Moore, a political and communications campaign strategist, launched the group in 2008 with Ari Wallach, a consultant and social entrepreneur. It was in response to what they saw as a distortion of then-candidate Obama’s character and record, particularly on issues that were important to Jewish voters.

The group’s signature has been its comedic productions. In 2008, Silverman got on board, becoming the face and attitude behind “The Great Schlep,” a viral video aimed at getting Jewish grandchildren to travel to Florida, visit their grandparents and persuade them to vote for Obama.

In the video, Silverman jokes about the large concentration of older Jews in Florida, playing up the stereotypes associated with Jewish grandparents living there, a love for tracksuits being just one of them.

“If you knew that visiting your grandparents could change the world, would you do it?” asks Silverman, who writes her own videos. “Of course you would. You’d have to be a douchenozzle not to.”

Moore and Wallach know Silverman’s humor is, in many ways, self-deprecating to Jews. But according to the duo, that is a staple of Jewish humor.

“This is the humor that we were raised on; it resonates with us,” Wallach said. “Jewish humor is inherently never mean or vindictive or about making fun of anyone. It is about the kind of absurdity that is life.”

Jewish humor traces its roots to some of the religion’s founding documents.

In an essay on biblical humor, Hershey H. Friedman, a professor of marketing at the City University of New York, outlines this deep-rooted tradition.

“The Hebrew Bible employs many sorts of humor, but its purpose is not to entertain,” writes Friedman. “Much of the humor found in the Hebrew Bible has a purpose: To demonstrate that evil is wrong and even ludicrous, at times. The punishments meted out to wrongdoers are often designed to mock them and to hoist them by their own petards.”

In the Book of Proverbs, for example, fools, lazy people and senseless women are all openly made fun of.

“Like snow in the summer and like rain at harvest, so is honor unbefitting for a fool,” reads Proverbs 26:3. “It is better to live on a corner of a roof than in a house of companionship with a quarrelsome wife,” Proverbs 25:24 says.

Jewish humor has changed a great deal from the time of Moses, but the principles of being self-deprecating and absurd remain. Moore says the thing that separates Jewish comedy is the way such comedians play up their identities.

“Some Jewish performers hide their Jewishness to fit in,” Moore said. “Jewish comics do the opposite. It is the nature of their comedy. You accept whatever it is you are.”

And that’s what made Silverman a perfect partner in this super PAC venture.

Her language may not be kosher for all, but Wallach says the decision to stick with Silverman and work with Jackson was a calculated one. The group isn't not making these ads for children or seniors but rather for the millions who have made its videos viral.

Going forward, Moore says, the group plans to build websites around issues it views as important, possibly venture into print advertising and, of course, roll out more videos. Already, he says, it has about half a dozen more in mind.

Why this election is far from humorous:

Romney is Mormon because he was born Mormon. Should we hold this against him? Actually in the 21st century we should since he has this severe affliction, the Three B Syndrome i.e. Bred, Born and Brainwashed in Mormonism with no obvious change in his mental state which he could easily cure with some rational thinking.

BO also suffers from the same affliction as he believes in "pretty/ugly wingie thingies, bodily resurrections, atonement mumbo jumbo, et al. And there has been no change or desire to cure his version of the Three B Syndrome.

We should be voting for leaders who can think rationally. Believing in angels, satans, bodily resurrections, atonement, and heavens of all kinds is irrational.

Bottom line: BO and MR have been severely brainwashed in their theologically and historically flawed Christianity and they are too weak to escape its felonious grip. And we will be stuck with one of them for another four years of "god bless America" .

No matter what anyone says, Romney is still a cheat, dishonest, heartless man. He 's proven time after time, speech after speech that he represents the rich and doesn't care for the middle or lower class folk. Sending his investments to Swiss banks and the Cayman Islands is too sneaky for me. The guy is not paying his fair share, his lazy scared little boys have not served their time in the military. Daddy"s boys are too good to serve their country. The whole romney clan starting with the mother are a bunch of spoiled sickos.

As compared to whom? Our current President, who believes in coddling terrorists and giving money away to people who did nothing to earn it? Talk about skewed values . . . No wonder the welfare-scamming lard a$$es are hankering for this guy to get re-elected.

How is Romney a cheat? Is is only doing what the tax law allows...Which he would like to change....Furthermore...he has paid his FAIR share of taxes..Millions.....taxes for investment income are taxed at a different rate then earned income...He as paid more in taxes by accident then OBAMA has paid on purpose...and look at how much your best friend Joe Biden has given to charities less than 1% of his income...Oh but he cares about the poor and need.... Romney is a giving man and a smart man who was very successful and now he wants to give back again...not because he needs it in anyway..but because he wants to.. I am not rich in any way..I am just thinking about things logically...

Morgan Hill – Off your meds? OTR? Missing brain disorder?

Your claims are baseless and are the direct opposite of Mitt Romney's character but actually do a great job of describing Obama's character – especially since Obama has proven repeatedly that he can't be trusted.

Also – I agree completely with maestra730 – Sarah Silverman IS a talentless hack who is desperate for attention. If she was really a comedian she could create humor without bad-mouthing someone else or cursing.

Samuel L. Jackson – who even cares? He takes himself much too seriously. I will not support another of his films based on the hate spewing from him. NEXT!

After 'bama made his views known about the way he feels about Israel, and the way he treated Netanyahu....I'm surprised anyone of Jewish lineage still supports him.

Paul you are a moron. Actions speak loader than words. Obama snubs Netanyahu while apologizing to the Muslims for our first amendment. Get your head out of the sand, stop worshipping Obama, and start holding Obama accountable for his actions.

Paul C – "president" Obama has said a lot of things – and then doubled back and said the exact opposite a short time later. Actions speak louder than words – especially when it comes to Obama. A Jew voting for Obama is like Bambi voting for a hunter, a Chicken voting for Colonel Sanders or a Jew voting for Hitler.

Get your head out of your tail.

Why you should vote for Romney... Obama care nonsense- I heard a guy today tell of how he received a letter today that due to gov't regulations for health insurance, his rates are going up $600/yr... Isn't that nice that OBAMA care...How does this help people...Sure helps the insurance company... This is the kind of garbage people go for until they start hearing the facts of Obama care..Nancy Pelosi..had the nerve to say...:Oh let's just pass it and we will see what is in it...This is a fact... Another fact, Obama could not get his budget through...It was unanimously voted down even by his own party...It is time for this guy to go..He can't do the job..It is time for some else to take the helm.... Look at the companies Mitt Romney was responsible for AMC Entertainment, Burger King, Burlington Coat Factory, Clear Channel, Dominos, Dukin Donuts, Guitar Center, Sports Authority, Staples, Toy R Us and the Warner Music group..to name a few...and look at the companies OBAMA doled out gov't money to and guess what they were all OBAMA supports and are all Bankrupt.Solyndra, Ener1, Beacon Power, Abound Solar, Amonix Solar.Spectra Watt, Eastern Energy...and of course GM..head for Bankruptcy again..If he would have done what Romney said...Let them go through bankruptcy process without the gov't saving them ..then other companies would have purchased the failing companies and the free market would have worked things out..Look at Ford..did not take gov't money and they are successful...GM-is headed for Bankruptcy again..http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2012/08/15/general-motors-is-headed-for-bankruptcy-again/......

Here is an example of media corruption...MSNBC..would like you to believe that Romney is having a hard time without Ryan and the crowd was shouting Ryan..Ryan when in fact they were shouting Romney ..Romney……. As for Sarah Silverman, I think she can be VERY funny, at times. However, I think she often goes WAYYY too far. Her attacks on her boyfriend, Kimmel's religion, were just plain wrong. I'm ok with making fun of my own religion (same as Sarah's), but if I make ANY jokes about anyone else's religion, it has to be completely harmless, and something that wouldn't offend them. Ok, I'm not as good about Muslim humor, because I think they take their stuff way too seriously, and THAT makes THEM a target (pun intended). BTW: I do have Muslim friends, but they all are easy-going, and joke about their own religions. I think Sarah often makes Jews feel ashamed, the same way Iran's Ash hole President makes most Muslims feel ashamed. There's a point when that stuff just ain't funny. Btw, Ajmhenehad (sorry, can't remember spelling) most-likely would NOT be Pres of Iran right now if we hadn't attacked Iraq. Iran was heading towards being more moderate, until we cratered their next door neighbors. And the most ironic part is that the only real threat to stability and our interests is IRAN! Stupid Bush, he even attacked the wrong country!

Why would a Jew vote for Obama? Would it be because they are brain dead stupid? Or is it because their only source for news is the media? Have the been following Obama and paying any attention to his policies with his support for all things Muslim. Obama has been snubbing Israeli officials while he sucks up to Muslim leaders. Not very American and certainly no a supporter of Israel. These Jews need to wake up and smell the roses.

First of all, jews don't vote based strictly on presidents policies to israel. Second, Obama is about as muslim at Netanyahu is. Third jews are always about individual liberties and rights, when it comes to social issues, jews have always sided with the democrats and when it comes down to fiscal policy, Romney wants to lead our country into more debt without being able to pay for a single cent of it.

Get your head out of your ass Larry.

      PS

Not all israelis are jews and not all jews support the state of israel. The politics are terrible, Settlements are terrible ideas, especially in this day and age. The israeli's have perpetrated some screwed up sh.it and they are to blame in the elusive peace agreement they say they want but don't compromise for. It's stupid and asinine to try and distill everything a jew would vote on down to "who loves Israel more" and it's insulting that the republicans think that just by simply pandering to AIPAC that they'll lock up the entire jewish vote.

OMG, they've raised a whole $200,000!?!? Those Jews are just so rich! Seriously, folks, Romney's wife probably spends that much on a week's supply of toilet paper. I've never seen a candidate so full of it in all my life. Granted, it's silk TP, but that's peanuts to "average folk" like them. Good, non-brainwashed Jews will vote for Obama and the Democrats, because we believe that nobody should starve when there is food, and nobody should sleep in the street when there's plenty of space to sleep indoors (i.e. like the home they just had reposessed that's sitting empty and being vandalized, because nobody can buy all these empty homes and condos). Obama is a good man, but not even Superman could fix all the crap that Bush/Cheney left for him. Let's not forget the freshmen tea-partiers, currently defiling the House of Reps, and blocking every piece of legislation Obama and the Democrats have proposed. They have purposely blocked any attempt at creating new jobs. They have stalled on approving budgets and debt increases, without any regard for all the people who were let-go, because their government or govt contractor employers suddenly had no money coming in, I work with several companies, small businesses, who manufacture and/or distribute goods to all the big and little government agencies, from EPA offices to US Army posts. To most people, those "little" showdowns didn't have any impact. To my small business clients, it was akin to being starved to death. Nobody bought supplies for months. Orders for military vehicle replacement parts were put on hold. All of my clients trimmed staff, some by more than half. These guys had survived all the previous recessions w/o taking such a hit. I am still taking a hit. I did a lot of (still) unpaid work to keep them afloat. One client of mine who employed a couple hundred people in a sad town near Elkhart, IN, making one special part for a special vehicle (I can't/won't say!!) went belly-up, and the biz went to CANADA!! Is this how the GOP creates jobs?

You can say that again! The Republican Party should be ashamed of itself. Obama is the President, not a Dictator. He can't just "make it so". He needs the support of the House and the Senate to make a difference yet the Republicans have thrown every obstical they could come up with to block just about every thing he's tried to do and then they blaim him for not fulfilling his campaign promises. We need a total shake up in Congress. We need new blood, unpoluted blood, blood that isn't tainted with self interest. I believe in Obama, I believe he cares for all of us and wants the best for us, not just the rich. In order for Obama to succeed, for the Country to succeed we need a Congress that will work with the President, not against him. A Congress that will work for the Country and not their special interest and Party. If I could I would fire them all and replace them with the dedicated men and women who are returning from the wars with a desire to bring this Country back to sanity. Who have no self interest other than to serve and heal a Country on the brink of collapse THROUGH NO FAULT OF OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT! There is something else I've wanted to say but haven't found the forum for it. I wish I could shout it to the world (or our little part of it) but I doubt many people will read this. Do you remember when Romney got all hot and bothered when someone made the comment that his wife never had to work a day in her life and couldn't identify with the average American woman? She had five children by golly and being a mother is hard work. Yes, it is hard work for those of us who don't have nurses and nannies, housekeepers and maids. Not to mention cooks (I wonder how many dishes she's had to wash). How many times did she have to feed her kids Mac and Cheese because that's all she could afford? How many times did she have to shop at Goodwill for school clothes. How many times did she have to drop her kids off at day care so she could go to a job making minimum wage or go to a shelter with her kids because she didn't have a job making even minimum wage. How many times did she have to sleep on the streets with her kids because the shelters were full and watch those same kids go hungry. They have NO idea what it's like to be an average American person. Romney says the middle class makes up to $250,000 a year. $250,000 A YEAR???? I make $26,000 a year and I'm a Med Tech and Caregiver. I wipe butts and try to give my Alzheimer and Dementia patients a quality of life that will bring them joy in their declining years. If I made $50,000 a year I would consider myself rich. On what Planet do the Romneys live? It's certainly not mine. How can anyone consider electing a man who is so out of touch with reality. And what about those tax returns? What is he hiding? I still consider that an issue. He may be rich and know how to make money but I do not see that man running the country. I think he would crumble under a real crisis.

I made a mistake last time and voted for Obama. I was hoping for change from Cheney. My God, has Obama been a disappointment! He keeps saying one thing but always does the opposite. For example. He said he was going to cut the deficit in half. Now he increased borrowing to 40% of the budget and increased the debt from just over $10 Trillion to now over $16 Trillion. On Letterman he even had the nerve to say he didn't know what the debt was. Give me a break.

Look at the companies Mitt Romney was responsible for and look at the companies OBAMA dole out gov't money and guess what they were all OBAMA supports and are all Bankrupt..If he would have done what Romney said...Let them go through bankruptcy process ..then other companies would have purchased the failing companies and the free market would have worked things out..Look at Ford..did not take gov't money and they are successful...GM-is headed for Bankruptcy again..http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2012/08/15/general-motors-is-headed-for-bankruptcy-again/......

I want to vote for Obama, but honestly Sarah Silverman is pushing me towards Romney.

If such a trivial matter is what you would decide your vote on (regardless which candidate), then do the rest of us a favor and go hang yourself. You're not the kind of person who should even be sucking up oxygen, let alone voting.

Yeah that makes sense. I was thinking on voting for Romney but since I'm a huge Aziz Ansari fan I guess I'll vote for Obama.

If you don't like a certain comedian, cool, don't go to their shows or listen to their shtick, how in any way should your like or dislike of a comedienne have anything to do with how you vote?

Vulgar language replaces her lack of talent.

@RBSG, you're not what's wrong with the political discussion...you're what's wrong with America. It's not enough to disagree with someone for you; you have to wish them death. I personally think Silverman can be funny at times, but this ad doesn't help Obama. I guess that means I need to die too. Fortunately, most liberals have enough common sense to not suggest I do that; act like one of them.
