Billy Graham site removes Mormon 'cult' reference after Romney meetingBy Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor (CNN) - Shortly after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney enjoyed cookies and soft drinks with the Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham on Thursday at the elder Graham's mountaintop retreat, a reference to Mormonism as a cult was scrubbed from the website of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. In a section of the website called Billy Graham's My Answer there had been the question "What is a cult?" Answer: "A cult is any group which teaches doctrines or beliefs that deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith." "Some of these groups are Jehovah's Witnesess, Mormons, the Unification Church, Unitarians, Spritualists, Scientologists, and others," the site continued. No longer. On Tuesday, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association confirmed that page has recently been removed from the site. “Our primary focus at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has always been promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ," Ken Barun, chief of staff for the association, told CNN in a statement. "We removed the information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign." The information about cults can be found on cached sections of the website on Archive.org from June 5, 2010. The theological question of where Mormons fit on the religious spectrum has drawn more attention because of Romney's candidacy. Mormons consider themselves to be strong Christians. Many traditional Christian denominations disagree, though rank-and-file members have their own views on the matter. The removal of the post from the Graham group's website was first noted by the New Civil Rights Movement website and then later by the Asheville Citizen-Times, which reported that the information on cults was accessed as recently as Thursday afternoon. Last week's meeting between Romney and Graham was their first. After the 30 minute sit-down in Montreat, North Carolina, just outside Asheville, Romney campaign spokesman Rick Gorka told reporters that Billy Graham led a prayer for the Romneys, saying "I'll do all I can to help you. And you can quote me on that." The evangelist who has been called America's pastor and has prayed with every American president since Harry Truman said in a statement following the meeting that "It was a privilege to pray with Gov. Romney — for his family and our country." Graham met with President Barack Obama in 2010 and with Sen. John McCain when he was the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in 2008. "I will turn 94 the day after the upcoming election, and I believe America is at a crossroads," Graham's statement continued. "I hope millions of Americans will join me in praying for our nation and to vote for candidates who will support the biblical definition of marriage, protect the sanctity of life and defend our religious freedoms." Larry Ross said in a statement that "Through an inclusive evangelistic ministry spanning more than 60 years, Mr. Graham was called to preach the transformative message of the Gospel to the whole world, regardless of one’s religious background, affiliation or none. As such, he never proselytized, targeted or labeled specific people, groups, faiths or denominations. "Neither did Mr. Graham attempt to divide his audience before he had opportunity to preach to them. He has a genuine love for all people, and faithfully proclaimed the love of God to everyone, providing opportunity for them to respond by making a faith commitment. "Mr. Graham’s calling is not to pass judgment, but to proclaim the biblical truth that Jesus is the only way to heaven, allowing every individual and group to fall along that plumb line," the statement went on. "He further stressed that salvation is the work of Almighty God, and that only He knows what is in each human heart," the statement said. The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination, lists the LDS Church as a theological cult. The Catholic Church also does not recognize Mormon baptisms as being theologically compatible with its own. The LDS Church has long bristled at being called a cult. Mormons note the many similarities and overlap between their teachings and that of other churches but point to their belief in other scriptures like the Book of Mormon as the reason they split with other churches. Mr Graham : need to learn what a "cult " is.... Some define sect to mean a group that has broken away from an established religion. Others apply the term to a group that follows a particular human leader or teacher. The term is usually used in a derogatory way. Jehovah’s Witnesses are not an offshoot of some church but include persons from all walks of life and from many religious backgrounds. They do not look to any human, but rather to Jesus Christ, as their leader.
A cult is a religion that is said to be unorthodox or that emphasizes devotion according to prescribed ritual. Many cults follow a living human leader, and often their adherents live in groups apart from the rest of society. The standard for what is orthodox, however, should be God’s Word, and Jehovah’s Witnesses strictly adhere to the Bible. Their worship is a way of life, not a ritual devotion. They neither follow a human nor isolate themselves from the rest of society. They live and work in the midst of other people.
Mr Graham can you prove that as a worshiper of God when it comes to your beliefs and that of Mormons?.. Remember jesus stated that his "Kingdom is no part" of this world. Also when ones came to make him king. he with drew. Plus when satan the devil offered him the " all the kingdom of the world and their glory" mathew 4:4-10...what did he do?.... is that what you and Mr Romney is doing?... a so called follower of Jesus Christ...
Most of the discussion on this topic reminds me of an old Batman joke:

Im very disappointed in Billy Graham.Im a christian and a catholic im not voting but I would like to see Romney win.We are electing a president not a pastor or priest.However we must never ever compromise the truth of the gospel.And calling a cult a cult which by definition add to or subtract from the articles in the apostles creed which all true prots caths and orthos believe in.However mormons like the jehovas witnesses are cults because they dont believe in the Trinity and deny the divinity and incarnation of Jesus among other problems.At his advanced age Bill should not be trying to be politically correct or watering down the truth.We need to pray for him

For Christians that are not aware, Mormons believe that the dead can be baptized. They believe, contrary to the Word of God, that after death one still has an opportunity to go to heaven. This is clearly at odds with our belief that one must accept Jesus as Lord and Savior prior to dying to be saved. The Bible is clear, " And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." Hebrews 9:27.There is no other course. There exists no holding area for those who die without accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. There is no hope of salvation – even for those that we love - who have passed without a saving knowledge of Jesus. The suggestion that there is a second chance after death, is a demonic attempt to diminish the relevance of our witness to the living. It suggests that they can wait until and beyond death. Mitt Romney is not merely a member of the Mormon church. He is a Bishop, Mormon leadership. He has stated that he believes in this ungodly practice. When you characterize him as a Christian like you, you imply a support for this cultish practice, which attempts to set aside the redemptive work that Christ did for us on the cross. For the Christian, this should be an immediate disqualification for the office of president. For those of you who are members of a Christian church with a pastor who is suggesting that you cast your vote for Mitt Romney as one of us, recognize that it is your vote. You will give an account to God for your deeds. As a believer, you know better. The scripture says that it is better not to know, than to know and not do. Now you know. But don't take my word for it. Do some digging. Find out for yourself.

For anyone that is not aware, christians believe in talking snakes, parting seas with the wave of a hand, walking on water, that average citizens can turn into a pillar of salt, that unicorns and fire-breathing monsters and sky fairies are real, that 2 of every animal on the planet PLUS all the food they need for at least 40 days and 40 nights fit into a boat that had been built by 1 man and was crewed by maybe 8 people, that a dude with horns and a tail lives beneath the earth's crust, that a white dude with a big white beard lives in the clouds, that this sky fairy (all powerful, all knowing and inerrant) impregnated a 12 year old virgin without sex and that this is somehow seen as virtuous, that the king of fairies had a white son in the medieval middle east who he had murdered for his own pleasure, that this person apparently a winged zombie arose after death and flew into the sky to be with daddy.
This is the short list of crazy things christians believe. But don't take my word for it. Do some digging. Find out for yourself.

I hate the game, not the player, although admittedly most of the players are annoying and willingly ignorant. On a cosmic scale I'm pretty tolerant. I would let anyone into my after-death party if I were to have one, and I wouldn't sentence anyone to eternal concentration camp no matter their beliefs. Of course with your religion, you won't tolerate any other religion in Heaven and you will cruelly relish seeing everyone else be sentenced to eternal waterboarding in a lake of fire. You gleefully await the day you can look down from the clouds and say, "i told you so! Now, burn!"
I am saddened deeply by this. I am surprised how far Billy Graham has fallen. Of course the church needs to distinguish orthodox from heresy. I think Billy Graham has opted for Mitt Romney over Jesus Christ. Christian leaders do not have to endorse candidates. Billy says their purpose is to save souls. Then why does he deviate from his purpose so often?

We all lived in heaven as spirits before we were born in this earth under our Father in Heaven. We reached a point where we could progress no further without gaining body and having a mortal experience. Jesus Christ presented a plan which we accepted. Satan also presented a plan which we all rejected. Satan became angry and rebelled and took 1/3 of our brothers and sisters with him and there was war in heaven. Of course Satan use to be our brother, but now he represents everything that opposes God.

The verse you quoted from Doctrines and Covenants is a direct copy from Revelation 21:8. The Bible says in Revelation 22:18 not to add to the Bible (especially not another testament). As for the other skeptics the Bible is not just a spiritual book but a historical one in which there are many "infallible proofs"Acts 1:3 and archeological evidences.
The bible has very little if any historic value, and nearly zero factual content.

Serious mistake and a hypocritical one from Graham Ministries. I am a Christian, first of all. If Romney is a Jehovah Witness, would they do the same thing? If Graham wanted to endorse Romney, he should have said so, although a good pastor should know that he should be silent on that. This only proved how successful Mormon marketing has been and how Graham Ministries has fallen so far.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with Graham Ministries. I could not imagine they support someone who denied the deity of Christ and defend a Cult who believes in extrabiblical authority. At least Obama said that he is a Christian and attends Christian church.

The Church of Jesus Christ–of Latter-day Saints is a restored church. The vision of Joseph Smith showed that the Father and Son are separate beings – just as Stephen viewed in Act 7:55-56. Ever since the Nicene Creed, the nature of the Godhead, the most important doctrine of reigion, has been off-base. Finally we have living prophets on the earth, a Quorum of Twelve Apostles as Jesus established. With the choice of Matthias, it was obvious that the quorum was to continue. God has restored the true church. It turns out that there were other people on the earth besides those in Israel - and they kept records too, and Jesus visitied them as a resurrected being and taught them the gospel. Mormon was one of the last prophets who abridged a thousand history of the people in America before the record was bured because of a great civil war among his people. Anyone who will take the time to read of the Savior's visit will be thrilled. There is no book of Christ. You can't turn to Christ 5:3. All scripture came through prophets of God. Why did it all end? Because of apostasy as Paul wrote about the status of the Church in so many of his epistles. The position of the Latter-day Saints is consistent with the history and origin of the Bible - which was not compiled until much later by committees.
God is something man-made, and in man's image. The Abrahamic religions of today are simply fable that are by-products of older fable. Mormonism just adjusts and adds more fable, none of which has any credible proof, to the heap of fable before it. Faith in religion begins as brainwashing. The brainwashed mind, as powerful as it is, at some point will effect self-brainwashing. Partial psychosis at a minimum. But many live with it, so enjoy.

Apostles and prophets are absolutely essential because they hold the keys to the priesthood. If the apostles all die, the authority is lost along with revelation; we no longer know the mind and will of God and Christ is no longer the "chief cornerstone". False teachers and priests arise and we are "carried about with every wind of doctrine". Paul taught in Ephesians 4: "11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Without apostles and prophets we cannot come to a "unity of the faith" nor be perfected in Christ. Without a prophet who speaks authoritatively the will of God, only confusion can reign as people argue what God meant and uninspired men tamper with the holy scriptures!
Christ taught in John 15: "16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you." Christ intended that he, himself, would be at the head of his church through revelation. That is why a man must be chosen of God through revelation to represent him and to preach his holy word – a thing that protestant churches totally lack because they apostatized from the Catholic church and which the catholic church cannot claim either because the first pope was a bishop, not an apostle, and to this day can claim no authority from living apostles...

The Pentecostal church nor any of the protestants could not possibly be the true church because they apostatized from the Catholic church and could not possibly claim any authority. That is a fact! Why was it necessary for Joseph Smith to restore the true church of Jesus Christ to the earth when the Lord had already established it ? The earth was not ready for the church during the Roman Occupation. The world was a brutal, wicked place. Almost immediately the early churches began to apostatize as is detailed in Revelations. The apostles did what they could, but the world began to kill them off faster than they could organize and ordain new apostles. Paul knew that the true gospel would be lost for a time. In 2 Thessalonians 2 he said, “1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;”.
Finally, there were no prophets or apostles left, but only bishops who were dependent on the apostles for authority. Left entirely without divine direction and authority, popes arose who were anything but representatives of Christ, such as Pope Alexander VI of Banquet of Chestnuts fame. One truly has to question whether God would run his church through men such as these. The church that Jesus Christ had organized had fully apostatized and was no longer found on the earth.
The early apostles also knew, however, that the church would be restored in the latter days and in anticipation of that great day they spoke directly to you and me in Acts 3, "19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of rest itution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.”
Can a thing be restored that has not been lost? We are indeed grateful to the great reformers for their sacrifices and work to prepare the way for the true gospel of Jesus Christ to be restored to the earth. They were like John the Baptist, who prepared the way for our Lord Jesus Christ. But, just like John the Baptist had to diminish while the Lord increased, so the protestant churches also need to diminish and give place to the true church. They have done their work and must end. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and I know that Thomas S. Monson is a true and living prophet on the earth today. No person who is too proud to admit that he is wrong will ever see the kingdom of God!! 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 5)
A prophet would speak the words of God. There is no God. There are no prophets. Just frauds.
Actually, Abinadi, Joseph Smith was a charlatan and a fake. Paul was just an ordinary man – we don't know if he ate some bad food, got a fever and really thought he saw something or what, but there is no credible proof that either one of these characters interfaced with a higher being. And that goes for much of Christianity – well all of the Abrahamic religions really – the religions that were spawned from it, like Mormonism, and the religions that were the source. All unfounded folklore that was rehashed from other folklore long before the OT. There's just not enough credible proof to put stock in any of it.

False prophets and usurpers are always alone when they have their "visions". That is because it never happened, to put it nicely. Joseph Smith had witnesses to everything he said. Witnesses are central to the gospel. Paul said, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established." Here is the testimony of the 3 witnesses to the Book of Mormon as set forth in the introduction to the Book of Mormon:

Some of you may have gotten a witness as you read these words. The Lord's sheep know his voice and the truth will have a familiar ring to them.
