Election results raise questions about Christian right's influenceBy Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor Washington (CNN) - For many conservative Christian leaders, it was a nightmare scenario: Barack Obama decisively re-elected. Same-sex marriage adopted by voters in some states. Rigorously anti-abortion candidates defeated in conservative red states. On multiple levels, Tuesday’s election results raised questions about the Christian right’s agenda on American politics, eight years after the movement helped sweep President George W. Bush into a second term and opened the era of state bans on same-sex marriage. “For the first time tonight, same-sex marriage has been passed by popular vote in Maine and Maryland,” said Robert P. Jones, a Washington-based pollster who specializes in questions about politics and religion. “The historic nature of these results are hard to overstate,” Jones said. “Given the strong support of younger Americans for same-sex marriage, it is unlikely this issue will reappear as a major national wedge issue.” Your Take: Should churches be polling places? Some conservative evangelical leaders echoed that line. Albert Mohler, who heads the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said on Twitter that votes for same-sex marriage suggested that “we are witnessing a fundamental moral realignment of the country.” A Tuesday ballot measure to legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state is still pending. In Minnesota, voters rejected a Tuesday measure that would have banned same-sex marriage there. Thirty-eight states have banned same-sex marriage, mostly via constitutional amendments. Obama’s victory also raised questions about the Christian right's influence in the electorate. Though evangelical leaders as diverse as the Southern Baptist Convention’s Richard Land and Christian icon Billy Graham voiced support for Mitt Romney (Graham stopped short of an official endorsement), Obama performed better among white evangelicals than he did in 2008 in some states. Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter In swing state Ohio, exit polls showed that Obama got 30% support among white evangelicals. While that’s hardly a victory, it’s better than the 27% support Obama got among those voters four years ago. Before the election, many evangelical leaders predicted that opposition to Obama over his support for abortion rights, his personal endorsement of same-sex marriage and his vision of government as a force for good would trump reservations evangelicals had about Romney’s past social liberalism and his Mormon faith. “There is no evidence in voting patterns that President Obama's 'evolution' on same-sex marriage cost him anything,” Mohler said in another tweet Tuesday night. Obama also narrowly won Catholics, even after the U.S. Catholic bishops waged a rigorous campaign against the Obama administration around the issue of religious liberty. The bishops alleged Obama was forcing Catholics to violate their own teachings by making health insurance companies provide free contraception coverage for virtually all employees. CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories John Green, a religion and politics expert at the University of Akron, said Obama’s win among Catholics was partly a testament to the growing Latino demographic. “Maybe Hispanic Catholics were not as moved by religious liberty-type arguments as by immigration and economics,” he said. Unlike in 2004, when John Kerry - a former altar boy - lost Catholic voters, the Obama campaign had a robust religious outreach program aimed largely at Catholic and evangelical voters. The effort included videos from Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, a Catholic, talking about their Christian faith. Obama's success among some religious demographics also illustrated how economic issues, as opposed to culture war concerns, dominated the election cycle. The defeat Tuesday of two Republican Senate candidates who made national headlines with anti-abortion remarks also raised questions about the Christian right’s power. In Missouri, U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin, who in August walked back his remark that "if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," lost his bid to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat. Akin’s campaign became a national cause for conservative Christian activists after the Republican Party abandoned the candidate and encouraged him to drop out over his abortion remark. In Indiana, Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock lost his race against Democrat Joe Donnelly after saying last month that pregnancies resulting from rape are “something that God intended to happen.” Conservative Christians did claim some victories Tuesday night, including helping the GOP retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives and helping elect tea party favorite Ted Cruz as a U.S. senator from Texas. The Republican party's embrace of the religious right has pushed me completely away and into the Democratic camp. Many moderate Republicans refuse to vote for these religious ideologues. The time for religious fundamentalist fear-based preaching is over and they need to realize that the world has grown up and no longer needs fear from the unknown in the form of a deity. 2)Take charge of the 'extremists' on the right, i.e. 'social conservatives' that have basically hijacked the republican/GOP party. Stop making 'gay marriage' and 'abortion' the top issues that they are running candidates and voting on.
3)Look at the voting demographics, and realize to be relevant in any future elections, and helpful to our nation, they will have to join with us in the 21st century and understand the that we are culture. They lost the latino vote and other minority vote big time. Stop being the party of only 'rich whites' and the 'party of no.'

1. Work toward a budget resolution with democrats.
2. Work toward sensible immigration reform.
3. Elect leadership within in the party that is more reflective of the country as a whole.
1. Focus on taking over Congress and the Senate, that is where the real power is anyway. 2. Spend the next four years looking for someone who has an actual plan for America and ensure they know how to articulate it. 3. Education is the key to a more successful and informed America.

1. Immediately reach out to the President to avert the fiscal cliff. Be willing to compromise, and by compromise I don't mean "surrender everything you hold dear" but I also don't mean "demand everything be exactly as you want it or you're refusing to play ball."
2. Do the same thing with immigration reform. The latino vote is going to be absolutely critical in every future election, and they are not incapable of being won over with the right message and more importantly right actions. There is already roughly 25% of that population that voted conservative. That is something that can be built upon. If the GOP refuses to budge on immigration reform they will risk turning the latinos into as reliably Democratic voters as the black community tends to be, and that will effectively kill the GOP in the long run.
3. Unsaddle yourselves from the religious right. The GOP was soundly defeated on social issues last night, and the majority of the younger generation simply does not hold anti-gay and anti-abortion views to the extent you profess. Clinging to this platform makes it very easy to project the GOP as being the "hateful" party attempting to deny people their rights, and that's not a winning position. Yes, you might lose the vote of the religious right if you take this route...but latinos and the younger generation are unquestionably the critical future voting bodies that must be targeted, and you can't do that by doing what you've been doing.
1: The rabid and frenetic right wingers in the Tea Party have all but destroyed the GOP's credibility. Publicly distance the mainstream Rupublican image from them immediately and start projecting an image of benign conservatism instead of the recent in-your-face, judgmental conservatism.
2: Realize that conservative doesn't exclusively mean Christian. People of other (or no) faiths have been denounced by the loudest voices in the GOP for too long. This has alienated large numbers of former Republicans.
3: Most people have opinions on issues that include both the left and right. The GOP needs to adopt a more centrist approach where accepting one promoted principle doesn't mean you automatically accept and are lumped in to the entire platform.
1) Lose their ties to the Christian right
2) Stop being mule-headed obstructionists in Congress and get something done! They behave like my children do when told we are going to a restaurant they don't care for: "But I don't LIKE that!" "OK, where would you like to go then?" "I don't know..."
3) Figure out how to get Hispanics to vote for them – Bush did fine, but they've hemorrhaged in that demographic ever since.
1) Block everything from the left for 4 years
2) Prevent liberals from doing any more damage to this country
3) Get ready for the next election in 4 years
1. Realize that they have a responsibility – to help govern.
This means stop being the party of "no".
Stop the filibusters.
Renounce the Norquist Pledge.
Replace Boehner and McConnell with people who will do the job the GOP congressional representatives were elected to do – govern, for the people, *not* the party.
2. Listen to the analysts who have told them that they can't be the party of older white men and win general elections.
Let go of their fixation with opposing marriage equality, reproductive choice and hardworking immigrants. These issues have nothing to do with political conservatism.
3. Solve their identîty crisis and get back to core values of conservatism.
The GOP cannot be all things to such constîtuents as:
– traditional Goldwater Conservatives
– neocons
– The American Taliban (which you may know as the religious right)
– fiscal conservatives (the Randists etc)
– Tea Party nutters
The smartest choice is to move away as quickly as possible from the American Taliban and the Tea Party. How many senate seats did the Tea Party cost the GOP in this election?
The Republicans
1) Learn about the true Christian values of empathy, compassion, caring and love for your fellow man (Not just your white fellow man)
2) Scour hate for those who are different from your soul.
3) Recognize that it is ok if not everyone has the same belief system as you. Your religious freedom stops at my door and mine takes over.
I like what Van Jones said about being a Christian on the Left. I feel very similar, living in Texas. We've been castigated as being unAmerican, unChristian. None of us risked putting an Obama sign up on car or home, due to retaliation of extremists. When the election was won, church friends were saying it was the end of America, God help us, etc.
It will be good to move on from the hate mongering.

If they will let us. Perhaps it will be necessary to wean them off Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly rhetoric and hatefulness. Perhaps the Republicans will learn that instilling fear in the electorate is not the way to win.
