Name of Israel’s anti-Hamas operation has biblical meaning

(CNN) – To English speakers, the name of Israel’s anti-Hamas campaign sounds pretty straightforward: “Operation Pillar of Defense.”

But reading the name of the Israeli operation in Hebrew might provoke some head-scratching. In Hebrew, the Israel Defense Forces have branded their recently launched anti-Hamas effort as “Operation Pillar of Cloud.”

An IDF spokesman explained that most Israelis would recognize “Pillar of Cloud” as a biblical reference.

“It’s based on the pillar of cloud that accompanied the the nation of Israel during the Exodus as they left Egypt and traveling toward Israel,” said Eytan Buchman, head of the North American media desk for the IDF.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“They wanted the protection from the troubles of the desert, from robbers and people that would attack them and from snakes and scorpions.”

Buchman said the anti-Hamas operation’s Hebrew name is meant to send the message that it is a defensive maneuver.

“We are coming up on a decade of rockets being fired indiscriminately at civilians,” Buchman said, referring to Hamas’ actions in southern Israel. The Jewish state’s current military operation, he said, “is a proverbial cloud that is coming to protect you.”

The Bible’s first reference to a cloud pillar comes in Exodus 14, which describes the Israelites’ flight from bondage, culminating in Moses’ parting of the Red Sea.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them,” reads the passage in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

"It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel,” the passage continues. "And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night.”

The idea of the cloud pillar refers to both physical and spiritual protection, according to Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, who leads Ohev Sholom, the National Synagogue in Washington.

“The spiritual message here is about praying to God for protection,” said Herzfeld, who heads an Orthodox congregation. “In Exodus, the pillar of cloud is spiritual protection of the Israelis.”

Herzfeld said the biblical reference would be instantly recognizable to the many Israelis who have had Jewish educations.

The phrase also appears in the Bible’s Book of Psalms, in a verse that says God spoke to Hebrew leaders like Moses, Aaron and Samuel “in the pillar of cloud.”

Israel’s choice of Hebrew words has provoked some criticism online.

"By calling this operation 'Pillar of Cloud,' the IDF are, in a sense, calling themselves God,” tweeted @joshua_eaton, whose Twitter bio describes him as a journalist covering religion and politics. “And they act like they believe that, too."

A blogger for the website Gawker, meanwhile, said that calling the Israeli operation a “pillar of cloud” evoked “an all-powerful, vengeful God seeking to demonstrate the primacy of his chosen people, to guide them in their affairs, and to confound their enemies.”

“Did Israel launch this attack because there was no other rational route to maintain its security?” asked the Gawker blogger, John Cook. “Or was it pursuing a broader agenda rooted in ancient mysticism?”

The IDF’s Buchman said he contacted Cook to challenge his interpretations, saying the Israeli military merely wanted to stress what he called the operation’s defensive nature.

“Inside the Bible,” Buchman said, “the cloud was defined as (following people that were) leaving and running away from a full army that had enslaved it.”

Buchman noted that previous IDF operations have also used biblical references.

In 2002, he said, the IDF used the name “Operation Noah’s Ark” for the seizure of a Palestinian vessel loaded with rockets, missiles and explosives.

And a 2008 IDF operation in Gaza was called “Operation Cast Lead,” which began during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and references a popular Hanukkah song.

Manly made Gods in name onliness euphemisms have become cherishing sublimations not to be outdone by anothers' naming of God such as Elohim or Jehovah etc etc. Is it not of more-so importance to write or make small-talk toward others to 'menstruatively' condition the morals of youthfulness than to bicker and banter about as aged 'gossipers' seeking praises of others to justify their own selfishness sakes? Who therefore is to be pitied more, the one behind the podium or the audience?

The christian word of truth being the gospels of which are now way too varying many to be had can no more be held up in agonies righteousness sakes. To the christians; "The troubles with unfaithful trinitarians, those who belly-up to one god times three is, they read but only into it and get very little out of what they make 'go-spel-lingly' in amplifications of unblessed pleasings by the manly adaptive and grudgingly adopted childish sons of God. Their rudimentary and timid preaching in devilish tongues beatifies only the dumb-hearted relics, the aged heartburns of their christiandumbness's idiosyncratic marmoset-like redundancies. Their godly embittered moralisms are but self-centered and selfishly censored upon redundant principles that are remorsefully archaic in round-about cultured replicants behooving those old fuddy duddies who fumble ever for their next glass worth of wine! Drunk and in temperamental stupors are the emotionally fallen within christiandumbs folds becoming sciatic pragmatisms unworthy of even one toasting for, but rather for the many to be rightly toasting against!"

In retrospect, Godless bemoans and bewails the ungodly. For these are the choices from which commonwealth atheists do make felt upon their retrospective and habitual senses denying the goodly upon ever moving towards the ways of godly intent. Many young-bucks of godlessness and the ungodliness sensually tenders to avail themselves with the nailed doldrums' sciatica. They do abound with much societal unpleasantries toward the abaters of commonly wanton deniabilities against them. Ungodly and godless beings of smirked violaters of randomized intention-abilities are meant only as austerities of servile subversions. Their subversive deniabilities are not without compromising or so they do entail and also do weave upon the where-with-all of seasoned papacies irreversibly mandated.

Likewise, the mockeries of these godless and ungodly against the goodly who themselves tenderly believe upon godly importance. The goodly ones may well live on to pass all and give bridled leverages onto every generation's aged continuations. How else could Life Truly End and Real Living Thusly Begin? To believe or not believe for these are Life's choices. Christ Jesus came to this world to condemn it and yet did He come here to also show how tenderly are generous mercies shown upon those otherly ones being most merciful to others who did so shower mercy to be so freely given by those being most merciful! Again I do say to believe or not believe for these are Life's choices. Still yet and forever onwards many generations are to be favoringly found in many a mercies, for the mercifilled ambiences are one of our Life's greatest treasures and livings' sweetest unending rewards upon the most needy of the poorest in spirits.

For God does never change His spiritualism and His Holy Spirit is the Great Sea of Absolute Nothingness! Always was and is and will ever be no matter what smatterings of materialized shapes do tend to seemingly clutter up His unending spiritual abundancy! It is truth that God has troubles within the fractal paradigms of inwardness's inter-cellular cosmologies as protrutions of insolent 'activists' that are sometimes revolting against the grains of our embodied sanctifications creating many unrighteous undulations of travesties not uncommonly being viewed by us celestial beings as being viral and even bacteriological in the way we understand things to be and therefore become. What was first made can never again become that which was made first for only in varying differential constructs can another thing be made upon to ever be outdone against that which was firstly made. The pillars of one's DNA, the spirals of all celestial life forms and formations bitten fomentations is where God's Sons and their given wives are taken in as residents there abouts.

Forgoing much, the variegated Kingdom Domains of God lay where-from and within the inner structures of All Manner of Celestial Life and thusly does mankind share in the abundancies of living fractals within inward Inter-Cellular Cosmological Paradigms. As mankinds' continual hunting for the codifying of Life's laws in Cellularized Cosmologic Confinements, manliness ever does continue onwards. He will become ever aware of the once long ago forgotten and now duly hidden things. For yet, many folks will ever become unendingly complacent upon the societal grandeurs for wanting sakes, trying to avail themselves valiantly never to be outdone by those who tend to be in broadest simplifications' adjuring for peaceful resolutions. May we be merciful upon those who deservidely aspire to be merciful toward others. In godly spiritualisms do we seek the folding and refolding venues of life's yearnings.

The "blood" of Christ Jesus will ever be an acclaiming conscription thru relief-based emotional prescriptions foresaken though not by the mobs nor even the masses allotments sakes! Only thru the individualists coming to self-minding emotional terms can one's detriments be erased! The podium does entertain the amassed audiences no matter the speaker who acclaims their wordages to be more then mere words but are as a model of enlightenment to be ever made thoughtful conscious recognitions of after the speaker does close out their speech! How soon one forgets and how long one does dwell.

A scattering of variegated opulence-ended minds is upon us in these trying days and Age. Leave therefore your harshest social wantings and unprovable devotional yearnings behind and never take wind of one's earnest longings for the weightiness of one's longings will smite even the most influential. Carry away nothing and leave, ever to make headway to the places inside one's being and do not keep ajar your heart's door for many will want to enter in and should not. Your loving of this Life is but for the world to have needs of and you should not heed the rumors from others as to just what is truly righteous. It is therefore best for mankind to simmer in their yet unfinished juvenile pottages never rationalizingly 'assaying' one's diffuse detriments, the very smallest of life's grains. As smitten breeds, our splendors reveal one's characters to be traitorous to one's and others analogous foldedness. Where then does true life really end and real living truly begin?

For this world knows not the time nor the place for the 'sons of man' and their coming upon this world to make judgement upon the world's governance. Behold you now for the time is now upon mankind for these 'sons of man' are now placed in and upon mankind's midsts. They do see much societal and governing goodness upon many lands and the one son does also see much bitterness as well. These sons of but a simple minded fatherly man knows well the bitterness of social torments and much of the worldly social egress. The tears that flow from this man's sons are bitter and with much consolations gathering in their togetherness as wasted nuptials being leveraged upon by time's undoing stature. The angst of one man's sired sons is but now the two-folded spark of leavened thanksgiving and no more trickeries to be unfolded upon mankind! No more is unsoundness being one sons' beatifications while the otherly son does wastefully partake of brewed measures. As sons of loving parents, do we live on and towards finality's ends.

Though my sights are now set, my heart maintains a pleasingly maleable notion of motion. I do so love my brother and other humane fledglings beyond the bounds of the wateriness-afforded baptismal complacencies. My brother and I are one blood and nothing dare comes between us lest they be but friendly natured. God as my soul's judge and Christ Jesus is my publicity's defender regarding my ongoing maleable heart! I am hell-bent to be my brother's keeper foresaking the watery conditionings of religious persuasion. May no man nor any women scorn my lot in this Life's consortium in brotherly assets. God forbade me in my time's past and did allow me the freedoms to be hung with! May the son and brother, being born of one common-placed man named Joseph and motherly Mary, be never-no-more to be found unwilling to set things right no matter what was so done in time's passing momentums!

Who before this day's Age was found to be those worthy of Goodly praises? Who after us will find peace set before them? Who in today;s timeline is this "son of man" that many should fear him for his worthiness stance? Who above can see the below? Who that is below can see what be above? From the very smallest crevice to the most high chasms, the Sea of Nothingness is the Holy Spirit. May the elemental gods find favor in this cherishing crevice-found sons of a common life man that they may not be afflicted with this world's power but rather he should carry upon them the angst from their manhoods till their natural deaths. Yes are my words as being of deism but I harken upon deism as being God's unending sons who did make in guilts shamefulness their taking of mankind's women, an unjust travesty to be once warned against but now acclaimed as high minded treasurings. In God are all things made cleanly and cleared up thru leveraging timeliness.

Only God's sons could make a real tree and in their unending lengths of progressive natures did they create mankind's celestial presence. God in His Holy Spirit being the absolution of all and every considerations makes well all things be they physical or be they minded in thoughtfulness considerations. The Holy Spirit of Almighy God is the Great Sea of Nothingness which where-in does abound the pleasentries of apparelled beings ever cleansed in opulence conditionings. In all godly places are many structured things so well placed. Whomever can say differently the amassing of things that are bound by His gravimetric conditions? Who dare I ask?

What I do in earnestness spiritually believe in is that the Family members of God including God Himself lives upon the very first created cosmos which is the inner cosmos. Many people in the scientific communes do call this inner cosmos as being atomic in nature. Our being nere upon the celestial or outer cosmos is due our being cast from or made out of the inner cosmos for many reasons less well known by the peoples masses. Some of us were cast out of and made with this inner cosmos smatterings baase upon conditionalized servile faulterings of unforeseen waywardness of God's husbandries and some were made by God's husbandry willingly wanting God's buildings to continue to do the Lord's Will here upon this celestial realm of gigantic life forms. Whereupon one's insides are living many families of God's members and servants and otherly holiness nbrethrens. We live upon this celestal realm doing what we want while many of us unify ourselves in the societal goodnesses of the communal. My way is not your way nor are others' ways and yet when we cross paths we receive each other and after a spell do walk on and are parted. Therefore, walk placidly amid the noise and waste ever being mindful of the peace one finds in finding peace there about.

Prayers or praying about things gives one time to be reflective upon the things being prayed upon and for. Many times a prayer can be thought thru and found to be in no need of one's sonly god. 1Corinthians 3:9 "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building!" Our labouring together with God imparts upon the mind's eyes that we have been given an equal footing with God and are left to our own means and where-with-all to live out our life no matter what befalls one. Death befalls all things living. Even within the Kingdom Domains of God where does reside all God's sons and His daughters-in-Law.

Is God to be made a mockery by those who tend to instill anti-leveraged pragmatisms? Are we to believe in the godless and the ungodly who care little about religions' piecemeal subjectives' ordinates?

Jesus, was the very first of many immeasurable 'elemental beings' and was In the Beginning an elemental king of all the elemental gods. Jesus, in His cunning, thru Chaos' manueverings, established the gravimetrical waves for the elementals to gather in semi-lucid broods thusly was formed the beginnings of celestial nebulas.

As time did force the nebulas to progressively surround the gravimetric oscillations where from did come about galactic formations of the elementals' sounding alarms against godly beratements. As systems of photonic elementals, the infinitesimally finite elemental gods did shower the solarized systems with their embodied beings. And in the now time, we are but made from the photonic elementals' stillnesses, the Stardusts of the Ages.

My "Physicist" knows very well the quantum physicalities of natured atomic stimulations. I call this "Physicist" my body's God. He has strewn his rivers of Nothingness with 'photogeneticisms' or the leveraging stillness of the smattered photons creating all manner of the first 'atom-like' materials needed to become thru timeliness all the elementals calibrationed members of our declared 'Periodic Table' of Materialized Photogenetics.

Microbiologists are today's inner-seeking astrophysicists for they are searching among our embodied core-roots to find answers regarding biological fractals of inner cosmological paradigms. We truly are God's buildings! Some of our bodies are condominiums and some are for storage purposes and some are the temples where God's family members and His servants do pay homages in. 1Corinthians 3:9 "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building!"

Sciences are but the dreams seldomly dreamt by people. Spirit endowed commoners and placid atheists may well have treasure troves of good books that they hardly ever do read. Many folks, be they spiritual or not aren't too intellectually orientated yet they stand by many scientists teachings without one iota of tenured deniabilities to question science oriented theoretics. Even the socialized spiritual commoner seldom reads nor truly dares to soundly understand too much where scientific reasoning does so apply. Who among us knows about 'Self-Similar Cosmological Paradigms'? Does anyone dare open the doors to Cosmologies of the Fractal kinds? Who among us truly understands that energy equals mass times light squared and its' true potential? What is the point in adoring scientific reasoning when one's IQ level can be counted on ten fingers? Thusly does the commonfolk idly make conversation their recognizable-to-them nefariousness means.

In Truth the land belongs to Israel, the palestinians are at best far distant neighbors and unwelcome in their original homelands. By your ignorance of history you have admitted the right of Israel to its own entire state.

% is designated by the % sign. When someone says for example 11 million that is not a percent that is an improbable figure based on the population existing at that time. This may be very difficult for you "be etc." but you cannot kill off more people than you have and if you explore the causes accurately you will find the ugly disease of unbelief behind every war.

Jesus, the Messiah, will deliever palestine and save the world from the zionist mouvement. This zioniste mouvement who made the world believe that the palestinians have no link with the israelites (people of Jacob). And they call them arabs. Yes, they speak arabic, but they're not necessarily arabs. The majority of arabs are semites and the majority of zionists has nothing to do with semites. If the palestinian Jesus christ was alive today, he would be treated like a less than a human being in his own country. Just because he doesn't follow the same religion as the zionist, the ennemies of the Torah. The zionist mouvement or what I call the merchants of the Temple whom Jesus has kicked out of the Temple. The people of Satan Synagogue who use always the biggest power to achieve their goals. They used the romans to crucify Jesus and now they're using Gog (the US) to kill palestinians.

Hamas is to Israel what the Wolverine are to Russia in red-dawn.

the red cloud of Yahweh is a toxic cloud that pollutes the world.

Palestinians are descendants of Jesus Christ and the real Jews; Bethlehem and Nazareth are and always have been in Palestinians.

i support Hamas because they are defiant rebels fighting against an imperialistic, terrorist regime occupying their homeland.
they are hero's and i will always remember them as such.

to me they are no different then the rebels in America who fought against England for liberation, then the rebels in Hattie that attacked their slave masters, then the IRA who tried to free their homeland from England. and finally the patriots who will rise up to free America from its pseudo theocratic-plutocratic leaders.

"I am שמיחזה and i fight on the side of the Just, i am with all those who rebel. i am besides traitors at the firing line, and i am the Knife that digs into the back of generals who order the death of children." I am the rebel. i am the truth, the love and the Knife."

The “precession of equinox” and the fifth cycle of a planetary alignment occurs on December, resulting in a “new world calendar” as every other 26,000 years .

As ancient scientist acclaim, prophets exclaim, and what is left of the shells of pyramids proclaims (constructed as a sundial).

So the night skies are lit in the “Holy Land”:
No, not with the candles from “Yum Kippur” or white doves with olive branches,
But rather Long Range Intercentennial Ballistic Missiles with the AIM for a “FINAL SOULATION”

Another “bovie trap” for the USA as the sinking of the Liberty (surveillance ship) or will it be another almost “decon 5” nuclear alert as in violation of “UN resolution 338” of the “Yum Kippur “ war in 1973

where American demonstrates its willingness to use nuclear weapons if necessary in defense of Israel.
so now an another opportunity arises for 4 stars generals from the west that may test weapons of Mass destruction to end countless lives -like fourth grade school kids with toys of play.
As USA’s anti-missile defense shield(“iron curtain”) becomes tolerable to the east as Israel is intolerable.

So Buildings crumble, body parts fly and blood overwhelms the human eyes everywhere. So much anguish, broken hearts, tears and unanswered prayers.
    Is GOD M.I.A
As U.N tried to establish a two state solution," but their is no solution
And Former presidents of the USA, Jimmy Carter, writes about genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
Or Sectary of State and Sectary of Defense voiced their opinions,"
As U.S Generals in the field and Joint Chief of Staff at the Pentagon adamantly protest, violations (established prior to the 1967) with no avail.

Intifada 11 (Al-Aqua Intifada) is violent unlike one !
Will the “Arab Spring” turn violent as “governments” are in tune to the people by the people…for Israel’s’ final defeat.

    • inhibited from completion by via viral penetration and executions, is NOT the solution
    • so now there is no more solutions and only resolutions:
    • and KILLING IS FINE TUNED,by israeli generals with policies that are "out of tune with soultions".
    • ."identification" Sigmund Freud would say ("defense mechanism" to relief anxiety by imitating the source of anxiety),”They are not Nazis” as FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE USA says.
Yet, the barbaric treatment of the Palestine continues where

SO Jerusalem is its new Aim…

As the media, news paper and television are in collaboration for a manipulation of a jewish resolution.

      a) that's a misnomer. even atheist's argue that their "belief" is not a religion.
the real question is: what functions as a religion in the life of the atheist? because something ALWAYS does.

      b) to the point at hand, Mao & Stalin – the two bloodiest known tyrants in history – were atheists.
which is NOT to say "all atheists are like that."
But IS to say: you can't make the argument that THE problem is religion – per the original comment.

Atheims is not a religion. Atheists do not get together once a week and talk about the evils of the world, and they don't try and push legislation to take away the rights of others based on a book.

It doesn't matter what Mao and Stalin were, except that they were murderous assholes – a fact that had NOTHING to do with their lakc of belief in anything.

i made that expressed point. Atheists do not call their lack of faith "religion."
And yet, something in their life FUNCTIONS in a similar capacity (another set of beliefs upon which they base their existence).

While atheists may vary in those basic underlying beliefs (not all believe as Mao or Stalin did), clearly 'not having a religion' (as Mao & Stalin claimed) is EQUALLY a problem.

Russ, you're making a silly leap in logic. There does not have to be something in place of religion. There is not a requirement there; nothing's missing. Atheism was not the cause of any dictator's lack of morals. They didn't use it like a blunt tool, and they didn't use it as an excuse, or to proclaim themselves special.

      November 20, 2012 at 6:24 pm |

"clearly 'not having a religion' (as Mao & Stalin claimed) is EQUALLY a problem."

Debunked and refuted about 10 times a day... we know you wanted to say Hitler, but it isn't just Hitler that makes you look silly.

The actions of Mao and Stalin were totalitarian. They sought total authority, which means getting rid of religions which would compete with that authority. The pursuit of atheism was not the cause for the bloodshed; it was the pursuit of control over a people.

      November 20, 2012 at 7:58 pm |
    • Russ

      @ sam & end religion:
i hear you arguing against a frequent but mistaken point often made by my fellow christians on this blog...
BUT you are still missing MY point.

I am NOT arguing that atheist = totalitarian dictator/murderous tyrant.
I am responding to the (equally mistaken) argument that religion = dictator/tyrant/idiot/etc.

      a) Can you not fail to see? the level of vehemence & *accuracy* with which you are debunking that false leap of logic for an atheist is EQUALLY appropriate in defending religion?

      b) while atheism may not be classified as a religion (that is debatable), what is unavoidable: philosophically, EVERYONE has to have a point of departure. you have a set of beliefs (both ideologically and pragmatically) upon which you base your existence. While that may not EQUATE with religion, it FUNCTIONS in many of the same metaphysical capacities.

      SO, to be clear:
      1) I am NOT arguing that "Stalin & Mao = all atheists are bad." but THAT SAME LOGIC is exactly what you are applying to the religious. Do you not see the hypocrisy there?

      2) atheism does not need to be a religion to be making a direct, metaphysical claim. in that regard, it NECESSARILY functions in *many* of the same ways as religion.

      November 21, 2012 at 11:08 am |
    • End Religion

@russ: "I am NOT arguing that atheist = totalitarian dictator/murderous tyrant."

Then why did you post: "let's not forget mao & stalin, who got rid of all those holy books to create a more 'advanced' society – both of which murdered more than all other known tyrants in recorded history." if for no other reason than an attempt to sully atheism by aligning it with "known bad guys"

In a followup you "refined" your argument to say "which is NOT to say 'all atheists are like that.' But IS to say: you can't make the argument that THE problem is religion – per the original comment."

If you'd like to argue, "i disagree with the OP's argument that religion is THE problem" why did you bring mao and stalin into it? My guess is it is because you were jealous of all the others you accused of being shallow and so you employed one of the most shallow arguments against atheism yourself, and your only goal t that time was to sully atheism by association without an actual argument.

"while atheism may not be classified as a religion (that is debatable), what is unavoidable: philosophically, EVERYONE has to have a point of departure."

Please show your empirical evidence supporting the assertion that everyone on the planet has to have a set of beliefs upon which they base their existence.

You can't imagine the possibility there is even one human who really doesn't care or think about where we came from or why we are here?

"I am responding to the (equally mistaken) argument that religion = dictator/tyrant/idiot/etc."

Religion is by definition a delusion. I don't recall ever stating religion = dictator, or religion = tyrant, or religion = idiot. I have found many religious people are quite unintelligent. I also infrequently uncover intelligent religious people – it is like sighting a UFO or rare bird, or finding a previously unknown type of butterfly.

"atheism does not need to be a religion to be making a direct, metaphysical claim. in that regard, it NECESSARILY functions in *many* of the same ways as religion."

Atheism is not a religion and makes no claim to any set of beliefs. It answers "no" to "are there any gods" and doesn't imply, answer or claim anything else, even the stuff you imagine in your fevered religious wet dreams.

You claim atheism functions as a religion. We keep proving it does not. But it isn't sinking in. Do you not see why religious people are mostly considered crazy and unintelligent? We present you with facts and you plug your fingers in your ears and deny the facts. We show you definitions of words and you change those to suit your beliefs.

The essential issue is that religious people hear us portray faith as unfounded and unintelligent adherence to nonsense, and mistake that for belief. They then want to return the favour by portraying science as religion so they can point to it and say "you're doing the same." Atheists tend to base conclusions on supporting evidence. The religious base conclusions on belief even if evidence points to the contrary.

      November 21, 2012 at 4:40 pm |
    • Russ

      @ end religion:

      1) re-read my initial comment at the OP. i did not change my argument. and notably, it's one i have made MANY times before on this blog. the issue is hypocrisy – having given examples of Christians who did horrible things in order to dismiss the whole out of hand (which is a logical fallacy), I responded pointing out the same could be done with atheists.

      2) you are asking a faulted question. you want empirical evidence for a metaphysical underpinning – when the entire point is that science (by its own definitions) cannot speak to its assumed underpinnings. it is a philosophical (& not empirical) question.

per that notion, Nietzsche criticized his fellow atheists for failing to see their *faith* in science (which made it a religion)...
"It is STILL a metaphysical faith that underlies our faith in science." (the Gay Science; my emphasis added) Point being, you are making metaphysical claims. and sadly, without realizing the difference between physics & metaphysics, you are doing metaphysics (faith, if you will) and calling it science. but it is not science; it is scientism – a faith, a religion, *not* empirical.

how can i say that? per your next question/assumption...

      3) you said "religion is by definition a delusion." as a scientist, you factually & empirically know that is not the case. it's not the definition nor is it accurate to the intent of religion. it's an opinion... and one based on your metaphysical point of departure – which leads to you last point...

      4) you claim: "atheism is not a religion and makes no claim to any set of beliefs."

and yet THE NEXT SENTENCE, you say: "it simply answers 'no' to 'are there any gods?'" now, that is demonstrably and (your favorite criteria) empirically a BELIEF. it cannot be answered by science – as science readily admits its limited knowledge of merely the *physical* universe – much less the metaphysical & philosophical underpinnings which philosophers & scientists alike struggle to address. science doesn't even know how to define life (pick a biology textbook, p.1) – and you want to regard science as factually excluding the possibility of the Author(s) of life?

that, end religion, is where you are doing RELIGION. whether you intend to or not, that is making a metaphysical claim – not something empirically verifiable, not within the realm of science. a presupposition. a philosophical underpinning. a point of departure. and most poignantly: a faith!

science is not a religion. but scientism is. you are mistaking the latter for the former – and thereby blindly accusing others of doing the very thing you yourself are doing. it's self-refuting.
