Medical advice from the Dalai Lama's doctor

By Jen Christensen, CNN

Atlanta (CNN) - A young girl bravely stood to ask the Dalai Lama's doctor a question, and he gave her an unusual answer.

Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, a world-renowned expert in Tibetan medicine, visited Emory University in Atlanta on Monday as part of his effort to reach more American medical practitioners. He wants to develop collaborative projects between the Tibetan medicine system, which is more than 2,500 years old, and Western medicine.

The little girl told Tamdin she suffered from asthma. She wanted to know if there was anything in Tibetan medicine that could help her get better.

Tamdin, who spoke through a translator for the hourlong lecture, immediately switched to English. In a gentle, almost too-soft tone, he explained what might help.

Hand sanitizers to include the ethanol-based ones are highly recommended and much more effective than any recommended by a Tibetan witch doctor.

Really? A hand sanitizer is better for you than diet and exercise?

    • Reality

Diet and exercise do not kill infectious viruses and bacteria. Hand sanitizers do!!!

@Reality, Can't believe I'm stooping to this level of conversation, but a) are you suggesting that hand sanitizers are more effective at treating asthma than diet and exercise? b) you are aware that most medical problems do not originate on the hands? c) many studies currently being done point to overuse of hand sanitizers may lead to worse problems including MS because you are killing the healthy bacteria with the good? d) 90% of your body's cells are bacterial in nature but only a small percentage of those are harmful and hand sanitizers indiscriminately destroy 99% of bacteria?

"There are two kinds of faith : mass in church and devil worship."

Exactly why I think your religion is the biggest mad made hoax of all-time.......

Tea should light a novena for all of the kids that have been abused by that 'mass in church' religion; speaking of idols, don't those churches have plenty of statuary to kneel before?

The Dalai Lama is a funking prink whose guerilla militants in Tibet are backed by the CIA.

For anyone who didn't notice the "Full Story" link, he basically told the girl to continue using her inhaler, but also to excercise and have a healthier diet. Not endorsing any belief system, but that is sound advice for anyone.

My mobile didn't give me the link, but I suspected as much...he IS a doctor.

He is right that excercise, especially cardio, helps. It worked for me. I was diagnosed with asthma at 15. I started jogging and rarely display symptons.

I think we'll be just fine without your ancient, mystical eastern medicine bullsh.it. Here in the west (some of us) like to employ science to cure our ailments. Thank you and have a nice day.

Hubert, whatever one does, it is connected to idol worshipping hindooism since they started both yoga and om meditation. There are two kinds of faith : mass in church and devil worship.

I call it medicine, since he is a doctor.
What do you do, go to Christian-only doctors?
Lol, do you walk boldly up to them and say, "have you been saved?"
Lovely way to greet the doctor who may save you...in the most literal sense.
      Grow up.

The story is ABOUT the Dalai Lama's DOCTOR, that's why.
Why not bring reading comprehension into it?

      December 5, 2012 at 8:48 pm |
    • teavangelist

talkin about reading comprehension, my OP did not reference doctors. The doctor talked about budhism and my comment was that all that is hocus pocus. The doctor part is great, like when he told the girl to keep with her inhaler. So there.
