Huckabee: Lack of religion in classroom leads to violence in schools

(CNN) - Responding to the deadly mass shooting Friday in Newtown, Connecticut, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said new laws regulating guns won't deter such shootings, linking a lack of religious discussion in the classroom to increased violence in schools.

"We ask why there's violence in our school but we've systematically removed God from our schools," Huckabee said on Fox News. "Should we be so surprised that schools have become such a place of carnage? Because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability."

"That we're not just gonna have to be accountable to the police if they catch us but one day we stand before a holy God in judgment. If we don't believe that, then we don't fear that," he said.

"People are going to want to pass new laws," Huckabee continued. "This is a heart issue ... laws don't change this kind of thing."

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that he is referring to his own religion when talking about "putting god back in the classroom." Or will any ol' god be good enough? Zeus, maybe? Yea, that'll stop lunatics from shooting up the place.

Huckabee is a sick **** to take advantage of this tragedy so swiftly to push his agenda.

Everyone who did so is, but this is particularly stomach churning, especially knowing that many of the victims were good church-going folk and the gunman wasn't affiliated with the school but essentially made it a place of random action.

There's a special place in h*ll for people like Huckabee.

It is not about religion anyway. It is about a relationship with Jesus Christ. Those two are vastly different. The scribes were religious, but Jesus called them hypocrites. A hypocrtie is a "pretender." There is no action behind their faith in Jesus. If you say you are a disciple of Jesus, there has to be some evidence of that. Read Galatians 5:22 if you need further proof. Also, it is not about a set of rules, precepts, and laws. Again, it is a daily relationship with the One who came to earth in the form of a baby and died the most horrible death anyone can die. He did that for each one of us. And He is calling out to each one of us to have that relationship with him. Read the Gospel of John for proof. Grace and Peace to each one of you. pjr

Gospels don't prove anything. The authors never even met JC, if he existed at all. Try again, please.

I am not sure that is what the founding fathers would want to be hearing Mr. Huckabee. Religion is not the same for everyone, and if you try to control school through religion you end up with al-qaeda right? Or at least the Pseudo Christian version. Interesting to note he is being pretty specific about which religion he feels should control our children's minds. I however, am not a christian and find christianity offensive to my culture and Norse Ideology. Christianity has also been largely subverted into a communist view ( we hear it all the time from you rich christians, about how if "you don't work you don't eat ). This subversion is mostly based on the teachings of Solomon who was a horrible person and an even worse ruler.

Lisa, I agree with some of your comments about "Christians." I am one and not perfect. But I try to live the life that Jesus has called me live. If I may be so bold, many of the so-called Christians are worse than some of my friends who choose not to follow Jesus. At times, the church is no better than those who are in the "world." If we Christians would live the life that Jesus lived, then you might want to accept Jesus. But remember this my dear one, one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God.

18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:

19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.

20 And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

21 And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Just today, I sat at dinner with an older relative who is Christian and had to hear him rant on with racist remarks. This is the same man who said, "Why would anyone have reason to be moral if there is no God?"

This older relative is mostly a death-bed Christian. Recently lost his wife and had to find Jesus for her in her last few weeks. She too was racist and hateful but got her ticket into Heaven as she lay dying and without remorse.

And to hear Huckabee act as though Christians own morality just sickens me all the more on a day like today.

I'm an atheist and I have deeply held values and morals. I meet far too many Christians who don't have half the moral values that I do.

Actually you sound like a typical self righteous atheist of the internet. You have more morals versus everyone else who are simply religiously affiliated? Just because you met a religious nut means you have to lump everyone else as having the same ignorant tendencies if they say they believe in Jesus? You sound like an egotistical person who stays indoors and rants rather than meeting real people. Maybe you should go out and talk to some Jews, Muslims, Hindus,Sikhs, Buddhists, etc. before you question their morality as well. You might end up learning the difference between spirituality and morality.

Religion in the classroom. The vast majority of religions in Christendom have promoted false doctrine while closing their eyes to soem of the worst atrocities in history including the Crusades and being silent during the Nazi slaughter of the Jews and others. Parents should be the teachers of their children when it comes to religion, not school instructors.

Those who tend to favor gun-control tend to favor abortion, drug legalization, and other deadly sins. Hollywood promotes violence, murder, perversion, robbery through movies, TV shows and video games...

Abortion is not a sin according to the Bible which NEVER mentions it.
