Author Lorna Byrne: I see angels

By Stephen Walsh, CNN

Are there really angels among us? Lorna Byrne claims she’s been able to see angels since she was a child. The Irish-born author of the international best-seller “Angels in My Hair” says guardian angels watch over believers and nonbelievers alike all the time.

So what exactly is an angel? The word angel is derived from the Greek angelos, which means "messenger." The Hebrew word malak has the same meaning. Christian theology teaches that angels are pure spirits created by God who carry out his will on Earth.

Byrne told CNN’s Dana Bash that she sees a multitude of angels that only appear around Christmastime. Watch the video to hear her describe what they look like and hear her advice to skeptics.

What do you think? Are angels real? Leave your comments below.

George, So in your mind the fact that only 20 children were slaughtered is evidence that angels exist and were at Newtown. The mental convolutions required are incredible.

Well, based on the reactions of the folks in the Bible who see angels, this woman has never seen one.

Angelic visitations end up terrifying the people who are visited...this woman shows absolutely no evidence of that knee-quaking terror that Daniel, John, Abraham, and the rest felt.

Huckster or insane. That's pretty much the two choices here.

      Why can't it be both?

      December 24, 2012 at 1:27 pm |

It can be neither as well. It is within the realm of possibility and you have provided nothing other than snark to disprove it.

      December 24, 2012 at 1:35 pm |
    • the AnViL

craniumthedumb – it can only be "huxter" or "insane" – as there are no angels, and absolutely nothing – not even snark is needed to disprove this.

no one has to provide evidence to disprove these "hair angels".

the burden of proof rests entirely on the shoulders of this poor sad deluded dishonest woman.

until some verifiable, substantiated evidence of these magical fairy hair angels surfaces... it's bunk.

"It is within the realm possibility.." – lolz – i'd love to see you try to substantiate that statement.

evolve son – please – for the sake of humanity - EVOLVE!!!

I never stated that I have evidence that they exist. This lady believes has evidence enough to prove to herself and no one else that they exist. Therefore she makes the statements she does. To make my point, however, you have no evidence that your feelings exist yet I believe you would argue they do. Just because there is no evidence that angels do exist does not necessarily say they do not. Further, you must accept the possibility that either scenario is plausible until you have evidence, otherwise your logical argument is invalid.

craniumthedumb – you plainly stated "It is within the realm possibility." – and i am interested in seeing you try to substantiate that statement.

I have not evidence to dispute that, therefore I have to take the person at their word until such evidence is provided.

Personally, I would tend to dis-belief that claim.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multi.tude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:7-14 KJV

Instead of trying to prove angels do not exist, you insinuate anyone who does believe need mental health care. Perhaps you need mental health care because you have feelings. I can't see them so they must not exist.

If an angel told a friend of yours to jump off a bridge, would you seek help for him or let him jump because "oh by golly it's a holly jolly Christmas" and angels exist?

      December 24, 2012 at 1:41 pm |
    • craniumthedumb

Your question has no real bearing on whether or not angels exist or not. It is simple snark. Provide some proof to me that they do not exist.

      December 24, 2012 at 1:50 pm |
    • WASP

@cranium: i believe the point roger is trying to make is
if one of your friends seriously walked up to you and said " i see angels and they want me to go with them."
you ask where are they leading you?
he replies " off that bridge"

would you do as your faith tells you and accept your friend sees angels or would you attempt to stop your friend for fear of them dying?

      December 24, 2012 at 1:54 pm |
    • Maybe or maybe not

Satan, as well as 1/3 of those that rebelled against God are angels. If an angel told you to jump off a bridge, it must be one that follows Satan's lies.

      December 24, 2012 at 2:27 pm |
    • Roger that

The burden is on you. If someone sees angels, they are spiritual. If someone sees pink rabbits, then they are crazy. Isn't it funny that when God tells a person to do something rational, everyone considers it the truth and the person completely sane, but when God tells a person to do something irrational then the person has mental health issues. Were angels helping Andrea Yates complete her God given task or was she insane?

An existential question like this is an attempt to change the subject. Do you or do you not have evidence that angels do not exist?

      December 24, 2012 at 2:56 pm |
    • the AnViL

craniumthedumb doesn't understand that the onus of evidence lies entirely on the shoulders of the person making the claim "angels exist".

this is evidenced by his repeated appeals to – and arguments from ignorance.

"Provide some proof to me that they do not exist."
"Do you or do you not have evidence that angels do not exist?"

logic is hard for those with weak, lazy, feeble minds.

      December 24, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
    • craniumthedumb

You are incorrect. In philosophy (which religion is a subset of) the burden of proof lies with the one making the claim. Wikipedia's article on it.

The original poster's argument assumed angels did not exist and because they did not exist the woman in question is mentally ill.

I am asking for proof to validate his position.

You indicate you are arguing logically, yet you fail to make logical sense.

      December 24, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
    • the AnViL

craniumthedumb – you are – not surprisingly – very confused.

the person claiming something non-existent, exists... is saddled with the onus of evidence.

a lady claiming to be able to see or otherwise sense magical fairy hair angels – owns the entire onus of evidence.

those claiming magical hair fairy angels don't exist need do nothing – and these claims can be dismissed casually.

extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence – and that which can be asserted without evidence – can be dismissed without evidence.

spend some time digesting bertrand russells teapot analogy.

      learn2logic, son.

      December 24, 2012 at 4:35 pm |
    • 0G-No gods, ghosts, goblins or ghouls

in other words, asking someone to prove a negative is not arguing logically.

      December 24, 2012 at 4:38 pm |
    • craniumthedumb

Since I made no claim that angels exist, I have no burden of proof. I simply stated that the author of the original statement did not prove his statement. I made an illusion to the fact that there are other things that obviously exist without evidence to others and asked for him to prove his point. In philosophical arguments the onus of proof rests on he who makes an assertion. Your arguments fall flat.

cranium. You say "In philosophical arguments the onus of proof rests on he who makes an assertion." That is exactly right. The person making the claim for angels (or gods) is the one that needs to provide the proof.

will one of you lovely christians please explain to me why angels have wings?
seriously if they are spirits then the wings serve no purpose.
if they were to become solid their wing diamentions wouldn't permit flight due to body weight and arrangement of wings on the back.
so why exactly does every depiction of an angel have wings?
why is it every one that sees angels swears they had wings?

    December 24, 2012 at 12:16 pm |

      December 24, 2012 at 12:38 pm |
    • Really??

In order to have "faith", you must let go of reason.
The accounts in the bible are fictional stories, many of them have been proven wrong. Noahs ark, David and Goliath, Jonah and the whale. etc, etc.
One must make a leap of faith (which is to let go of the fact that claims make no sense, and just believe) in order to believe the bible.
You cannot rationally argue your point when you have had to let go of reason and rational in order to have "faith".
Your bible WAS written by men ( not one god) and your god was created by men as well, as have every god that has ever existed.

      December 24, 2012 at 12:52 pm |
    • Really??

The proof has been out there for a long time.
Start with the fact that no human could have lived as long as it took to create the boat.
Second. The dimensions of the ship could never accomodate ALL of the species that exist.
Third. There would be insufficient food and water for all occupants.
Fourth. If the earth flooded to above the peak of mount everest, The occupants of the boat would freeze to death, and the ship would be frozen in ice.
Fifth. The volume of water it would take to flood the earth to that level is greater than the volume of water on earth.
Sixth How did all of the creatures that were on islands, and were landlocked so that they could not get to where the ark was, get to the departure location.
Seventh. Flooding of the earth would have killed nearly all of the vegetation on earth. How did all of the plants survive (It would take 10 arks just to contain the seeds of all the plants in the world.
I can go on but my final point is again....You must let go of reason in order to believe these rediculous stories.

      December 24, 2012 at 12:54 pm |
    • Really??

You have proof that some parts of the world have flooded. You have zero proof that there was ever a completely encompassing world flood.

"Fifth. The volume of water it would take to flood the earth to that level is greater than the volume of water on earth." at the time of the great flood there was no water on the earth a mist came up from the ground and watered the earth and I would rather believe in GOD if he does not exist and lose nothing than to not believe in GOD and him exist and lose everything so please think about that and I will be praying for you

      According to hippypoet
“Our planet is 4.5 billion years old. It has suffered 5 mass extinctions. This planet has known many different living creatures.
      450 Myr (Late Ordovician)
estimated 85% of marine species became extinct
      374 Myr (Late Devonian)
estimated 70-80% of marine species became extinct
251 Myr (end of the Permian)
estimated 90% of all species became extinct, perhaps 99% of all animals – the greatest mass extinction known in Earth history
200 Myr (end of the Triassic)
most ammonites, half the genera of bivalves, many brachiopods and gastropods, 20% of foraminifera families, 80% of quadrupeds, and all conodonts became extinct
65 Myr (end of the Cretaceous)
dinosaur extinction, along with ~2/3 of all species and perhaps 80% of all individual organisms”

I wonder which one of these mass extinctions was Noahs flood.

None of them. Noah (if he existed) would have been human, Humans have been around for around 200,000 years. Do you have some record of a worldwide flood in the last 200,000 years?

easy answer. none. none of those were from a world-wide flood. that's impossible. there is a finite amount of water on earth. it doesn't change. don't be silly. use your brain and look those extinctions up - see how they don't mention a flood?

      1) a bronze age book written by sheepherders, combined by a pagan emperor and edited by pope after pope.
      2) or modern science that is tested and retested and retested and retested.

atheists just don't believe in gods, any gods what so ever, i personally view the world from a logic based stand point.
example: what logical function would a certain feature of the human body serve in the grand scale of nature?
i enjoy surfing through new published works by various scientists expanding my mind based on their findings; and tying some of their findings just to see how it worked.

science created this marvelous world you live in, your god wants to destroy it.
humans made human problems that can be fixed only by human hands.

      hmm, couple questions for you:

@Streetapologetids "The taxi-cab fallacy is his creation is it not?"
@Chad "did you honestly think that Mr. Williams invented this fallacy? (he didnt, it was coined by nineteenth century atheist philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer)

@Streetapologetids "You aren't being dishonest again are you, the Chad?"
@Chad "now.. based on your response to the above question, how do you reconcile your own dishonesty, with my truthfulness?

interesting upside down logic you possess..

I got something wrong because I did not do the follow up research on who created the taxi-cab fallacy, I admit that I am wrong, feel better; that you did take the time, good for you, your ego is intact, that is all you want.
"He (Chad) is either hopelessly ignorant or hopelessly disingenious."
You see most of your critics can admit when they are wromg, you never. So tell me do you get many or all of your posts from the William's website? Yours are almost identical.

PS: BTW my ? was just that...Was the taxi-cab fallacy not his creation? Not a statement of fact as you made it out to be, I did not know for certain, just what I read on the web. Pot calling the kettle black is all you ever have, sad.

Wickershams Conscience, the taxi cab fallacy....Google it if you like. The above is the last line of the article.
You are using Craig again, christian apologists confirming what another christian apologist says is true, isn't that what you do with the bible.

      C. You have no problem accusing a theist of lying, regardless of whether you actually believe they are or not.. Shoot first and ask questions later.
      D. I dont lie

do you feel that your accusations have any credibility?

I and almost all of your critics accuse you of lying, strength in numbers, I guess. Schopenhaur never put forward the taxi cab fallacy as you say, it only a few minutes to find that out, man you are pathetic.

Chad, you lie continually, not just in words, but in thought when you claim to think one way and then turn around and demonstrate that you won't think that way when it doesn't serve your position. Lying isn't what you do, it's who you are.

      December 24, 2012 at 5:56 pm |
    • Streetapolgogetics

The taxi cab objection made by the atheist Schopenhauer, that people like you and Craig have hi-jacked to serve your purposes, yes, pathetic,

      December 24, 2012 at 6:21 pm |
    • Chad

I think the biggest reason that there is rarely actually an example provided to accompany these non stop accusations of lying, is that when it is attempted (as was done here by @StreetApologetics "Schopenhaur never put forward the taxi cab fallacy as you say, it only a few minutes to find that out, man you are pathetic")

is that when it is tried, it quickly becomes evident that you are actually making baseless accusations.

      December 24, 2012 at 8:46 pm |
    • Chad

oh, and how exactly does Craig "hi-jacked to serve your purposes"?

@child 1991: proof that angels aren't real outside her own mind.

      Signs and Symptoms
Schizophrenia is a mental illness that usually strikes in late adolescence or early adulthood, but can strike at any time in life. The signs and symptoms vary from individual to individual, but all people with the disorder show one or more of the following symptoms:

      1. Delusions: These are beliefs that are not true, such as feeling people are following or trying to hurt them, believing other people can read their minds, or beliefs that they have special powers or abilities.
      2. Hallucinations: This usually takes the form of hearing voices that are not there, but people with schizophrenia may also SEE, smell, taste, and feel things that are not there.
      3. Bizarre behavior: This can be expressed in many different ways. In short, the individual behaves in ways that seem inappropriate or strange to other people.
      4. Disorganized speech: The individual speaks in ways that are hard to understand. For instance, sentences might not make sense, or topic of conversation changes with little or no connection between sentences. Sometimes speech is completely incomprehensible.
      5. "Negative symptoms": This includes lack of motivation or interest, diminished cognitive functioning, and decreased emotional expression. Individuals may lose interest in attending to their own personal hygiene, have little interest in interacting with others, and rarely seem to feel or express strong emotions.

The thing is, she doesn't have a proof to give it to you. But she testifies about what she is convinced of, because the proof was given to her.
I side with her, not because I am a gullible sheep who wants to believe in fairytales, but because I too have been convinced by something higher than man's persuasion.
There is a thing you need to understand about those of us who have had encounter with the LIVING GOD, and who are standing firm in our claims.. Flesh and blood did not reveal it to us, but our Father who is in Heaven, who dwells in unapproachable light AND with those who are of humble and contrite spirit, who seek Him with their whole hearts. Because His kingdom is not of this world, where Man(kind) is god, and Media and superstars they create are fitting rather the description of creatures pulled out of Black Hole of Netherworld. ...
This world does not know God nor do they want to know Him. And by what you say, you obviously fit in the crowd of those who only know the kingdom of this world.
But neither you nor anyone else have any excuses. Because we all were given the same measure of proof in our beings and all around us, so that we would KNOW that we are made to be human beings, in the image of the One who created us. And therefore the gift of who we are comes with a price and responsibility.
To those who seek WILL find. But the pride in human hearts separates us from our Creator. Yet,Those who seek after the proof before humbling themselves and acknowledging their need, they'll get their proof, but not on their terms but His. He is the LORD, and HE promises that all flesh will know that He is God. He is not limited nor intimidated by time. We are!

But you are full of yourself , and because of pride and arrogance of your heart you have rejected the truth, and denying it, dismissing it and bucking against it, even ridiculing it, you are damning your own soul!

      Bible quotes:
Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

You should not let a sorceress live. (Exodus 22:17 NAB)

If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives. (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death. (Leviticus 20:27 NAB)

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, shall be burned to death. (Leviticus 21:9 NAB)

Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the Lord alone, shall be doomed. (Exodus 22:19 NAB)

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)

If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)

Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants. (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

Cursed be he who does the Lords work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood. (Jeremiah 48:10 NAB)

Though there are no verses in the New Testament that advocate the killing of non-believers.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (Matthew 5:43-44 KJV)

Joe Smith had his Moroni. (As does M. Romney)

"Latter-day Saints like M. Romney also believe that Michael the Archangel was Adam (the first man) when he was mortal, and Gabriel lived on the earth as Noah."

    Jehovah Witnesses have their Jesus /Michael the archangel, the first angelic being created by God;

Mohammed had his Gabriel (this "tin-kerbell" got around).

Jesus and his family had/has Michael, Gabriel, and Satan, the latter being a modern day demon of the demented. (As does BO and his family)(As do Biden and Ryan)

The Abraham-Moses myths had their Angel of Death and other "no-namers" to do their dirty work or other assorted duties.

Contemporary biblical and religious scholars have relegated these "pretty wingie/horn-blowing thingies" to the myth pile. We should do the same to include deleting all references to them in our religious operating manuals. Doing this will eliminate the prophet/profit/prophecy status of these founders and put them where they belong as simple humans just like the rest of us.

    Some added references to "tink-erbells".

"The belief in guardian angels can be traced throughout all antiquity; pagans, like Menander and Plutarch (cf. Euseb., "Praep. Evang.", xii), and Neo-Platonists, like Plotinus, held it. It was also the belief of the Babylonians and As-syrians, as their monuments testify, for a figure of a guardian angel now in the British Museum once decorated an As-syrian palace, and might well serve for a modern representation; while Nabopolassar, father of Nebuchadnezzar the Great, says: "He (Marduk) sent a tutelary deity (cherub) of grace to go at my side; in everything that I did, he made my work to succeed."
Catholic monks and Dark Age theologians also did their share of hallu-cinating:

"TUBUAS-A member of the group of angels who were removed from the ranks of officially recognized celestial hierarchy in 745 by a council in Rome under Pope Zachary. He was joined by Uriel, Adimus, Sabaoth, Simiel, and Raguel."

And tin-ker- bells go way, way back:

"In Zoroastrianism there are different angel like creatures. For example each person has a guardian angel called Fravashi. They patronize human being and other creatures and also manifest god’s energy. Also, the Amesha Spentas have often been regarded as angels, but they don't convey messages, but are rather emanations of Ahura Mazda ("Wise Lord", God); they appear in an abstract fashion in the religious thought of Zarathustra and then later (during the Achaemenid period of Zoroastrianism) became personalized, associated with an aspect of the divine creation (fire, plants, water...)."

"The beginnings of the biblical belief in angels must be sought in very early folklore. The gods of the Hitti-tes and Canaanites had their supernatural messengers, and parallels to the Old Testament stories of angels are found in Near Eastern literature. "

"The 'Magic Papyri' contain many spells to secure just such help and protection of angels. From magic traditions arose the concept of the guardian angel. "

No "pretty/ug-ly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we classify angels as f–airies and "tin–ker be-lls". Modern de-vils are classified as the de-mons of the de-mented.

"The prophet Ezekiel described an incredible vision of cherubim angels in Ezekiel chapter 10 of the Torah and the Bible, mentioning that the angels’ wings were “completely full of eyes” (verse 12) and “under their wings was what looked like human hands” (verse 21). The angels each used their wings and something “like a wheel intersecting a wheel” (verse 10) that “sparkled like topaz” (verse 9) to move around."

I find it odd that one, such as yourself, you routinely fantasizes about the death of Christians here, would say such a thing. You are a very disturbing person.

The mentally ill are people as well, William. I've had to care for a few as part of my job. You wouldn't feel superior to a person in liver failure so why now? A brain is just another organ.

      Religion IS mental illness

Believing in Angels is no different than believing ones self to be Napoleon

      She needs medical intervention

I did not state that the mentally ill should not recieve care only that they should recieve compassion and not be mocked, or made to feel inferior.
Incidentally religion is not a diagnosis, and this woman is obviously just trying to market her book.

Yeah, right, Lorna. You'd say you see anything, to sell your book. And you can see all kinds of things with the appropriate drugs / delusions.

    • Docking Bro

I see religious nuts who blindly follow a 2000 year old book of fairy tales that has been proven over and over to be verifiably false.

Not only do I see them, I have to work with them.
Holy schnikees are they real, and really scary as they have multiple high capacity guns and are just salivating to use them to kill another human being just to prove how much they love their jeebus.
