My Take: New Year’s resolution – don’t get murdered

Editor’s Note: Qasim Rashid is a national spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA. Follow him on Twitter @MuslimIQ.

By Qasim Rashid, Special to CNN

(CNN)–My New Year’s resolution is to not die for my faith. I’d hoped that 2012 would bring a revolution among Muslims and Muslim-majority nations to free oppressed minds.

Yet I find myself still waiting to not die.  That’s the “curse” of being an Ahmadi Muslim in too much of the Muslim world.

Ahmadi Muslims believe Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) is the long awaited messiah and Mahdi the Prophet Mohammed foretold, sent to unite mankind and establish peace. But this isn’t an evangelical piece, so please, keep reading.

Instead of peace, 2012 brought increased persecution in which vigilante murder, unjust arrest and outright discrimination against Ahmadi Muslims continued. A new type of persecution also increased, from which even death is not an escape.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

On December 3, armed extremists destroyed 120 graves belonging to Ahmadi Muslims at a cemetery in Lahore, Pakistan. When I condemned the attack on Twitter, the response from some was just as ignorant. “You’re an infidel! Stop calling yourself a Muslim!” “You’re causing Fitna (or chaos) stop with these infidel beliefs!” Across Pakistan, Europe, Indonesia—and yes, even here in America—this is reality for Ahmadi Muslims.

I get it.

Some Muslims aren’t thrilled that Ahmadi Muslims believe the messiah has come because they expect Jesus, son of Mary, to literally descend from heaven. Ahmadi Muslims believe the Quran is clear that Jesus died a natural death many years after surviving the crucifixion.

But this isn’t about persuading anyone to believe us. Instead, it is about confronting Fitna’s actual source and recognizing the biggest poison for Muslims worldwide: religious bigotry.

Sometimes that bigotry is peripheral. The other day I tweeted a quote from Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison praising the head and Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, “… under (your holiness’) leadership the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been a true blessing for us here in the United States." Like clockwork I lost a dozen followers.

Sometimes that bigotry is disguised as a compliment. “You’d be such a good Muslim, if only you weren’t a Qadiani,” someone once told me in person. Qadiani is a pejorative for Ahmadi Muslims.  The “compliment” reeks of patronization, is actually an insult, and ignores the shocking possibility that perhaps I am a “good Muslim” because I am an Ahmadi Muslim.

Sometimes that bigotry is direct. “You Qadiani mother--er! You will burn in hell for your beliefs! You godd- Jewish agent I’ll kill you!”  No comment.

The above religious bigotry I can handle. When some of the above sometimes turns to death threats, I can only foolishly hope my wife doesn’t find out. (She has this funny thing where she doesn’t want her husband brutally murdered. I know I know, women!)

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

But sometimes that bigotry is full-blown state-sanctioned persecution and violence. Like in certain Arab states where Ahmadi Muslims are incarcerated and deported for the crime of being an Ahmadi Muslim. Or like in Pakistan where simply claiming Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is the messiah is a criminal offense warranting capital punishment for the use of derogatory remarks in respect to the Prophet.

No exaggeration—as we lawyers like to say—that’s the black letter of the law. Fortunately, no Ahmadi Muslim in Pakistan has been executed for this crime, yet. But is it anything less than an execution when the Taliban murders 86 Ahmadi Muslims in broad daylight and the police, who admitted to knowing of the attack beforehand, look on from afar?

Look, I’m not looking for special treatment. Nor do I want sympathy. But I do want one thing for the sake of humanity: That Muslims condemn all forms of religious bigotry—peripheral, patronizing, direct and violent. While this simple request is what’s right, some turn a deaf ear, despite Prophet Mohammed's pluralistic example.

Ahmadi Muslim Islamic Sect has appealing message for U.S. politicians but has global enemies

Mohammed championed religious equality in the Charter of Medina he signed with Jews. He assured protection of religious freedom in his letter to Christian monks at St. Catherine’s Monastery. He also afforded all Arabs carte blanche forgiveness when peacefully retaking Mecca—on the single condition that religious freedom reign free. Even Prophet Mohammed's rules of war were specifically designed to protect, not persecute, religious freedom.

Every Ahmadi Muslim, Shia Muslim, Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha’i, Sikh, atheist, agnostic, pagan—and the list goes on—has that fundamental human right to religious freedom. Establishing that right creates the peace and mutual respect we all ostensibly want.

I say ostensibly, because when it comes to religious freedom in too much of the Muslim world, I’m still waiting to not die. I’ll continue to wait, alongside millions, until Muslims recognize religious bigotry for what it is—a cancer—and expel it from their midst. Yet, my in-box will reflect that this simple plea has, for some, fallen on deaf ears.

Well, I guess I better not slack on my New Year’s resolution.

Islam, the next religion to crumble, after Christianity. Just not as far down the path. These persistent memes take a long time to die off, but reason takes them out eventually. It's a slow-acting antibiotic most of the time.

Yes, Muslims believe Jesus is the messiah. Because Muslims don't believe any person can come back from death, they think God gave Judas the face of Jesus, Jesus was sent to Heaven and is still alive, and Judas was crucified instead (God punishing him for betraying Jesus). And when the Muslim version of the anti-Christ shows up, Jesus will return to defeat him. At that point the world will end and Jesus will die along with everyone else. Then everyone will be revived and Moses will lead the Jews to Heaven, Jesus the Christians, and Mohamed the Muslims.

A lot of people on here haven't read the quran. The quran trashes the most basic tenets of christianity and christians themselves. The author of this article and most other muslims dont bother to read the quran.

Qur'an 5:17 "Verily they are disbelievers and infidels who say, 'The Messiah, son of Mary, is God.'"
Qur'an 5:51 "Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends. They are but friends and protectors to each other."
Qur'an 5:72 "They are surely infidels who blaspheme and say: 'God is Christ, the Messiah, the son of Mary.' But the Messiah only said: 'O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.'"

There are more negative quotes towards xtianity and christians but u get my point.

Crazy but true: The individuals which we call Islamists today are in fact model Muslims according to Muhammad's will. When they reason their evil deeds by the Koran they tell the truth. It is true that the Koran requires a Muslim to kill infidels. Better make toilet paper than a Koran.

yea by saying " Even Prophet Mohammed's rules of war were specifically designed to protect, not persecute, religious freedom.", the author is definitely deluded or outright lying.

muham_mad spread islam by the sword and persecuted religious minorities, specifically the jews. Read about the 'The Genocide of Banu Qurayza', it is available on wikiislam. The gist of the story of the Banu Qurayza jewish tribe is that they resisted islam and muham_mad. Then muham_mad planned an attack on their tribe and captured the jews of Banu Qurayza. The jews there surrendered. That is they gave up! But AFTER surrendering, muham_mad personally beheaded all the adult males (about 600 of them). Muham_mad ordered his men to check for pubic hair on all the boys. If they had pubic hair, they were beheaded. After taking care of the adult males, that SAME night, he slept with the now widowed wife of the jewish leader of that tribe and gave the other widows to his men as captives of war for their 'entertainment'. Not only was muham_mad a murderer, but a rapist too.

    @AtheistSteve

Genuine Christianity makes me loving my fellow human beings on every condition. By nature I would hate everybody because the human flesh (nature) is bigoted.

Islam is nothing else than the full-revelation of the human flesh. Muhammad was simply carnal.

    • AtheistSteve

For the second time....drop the references to islam. We're talking about Christianity.
Now I don't hate everyone and I have no Christianity at all. So I guess you're wrong about that one. Christianity isn't simply and only good for loving others...so again...what is it good for?

      January 5, 2013 at 10:35 am |
    • Moby Schtick

      Translation of RB's rant:

"I hate everybody, but I'd rather accuse the whole human species of having that hate than admit that I'm a jerk. Also, by claiming christianity, I can claim to love everyone that I really hate. After all, what good is love when you're showing it to everyone equally? It defeats the purpose but it sure sounds a lot better than saying I hate everyone. "

Ahmadiyya sect is a narcissist cult within Islam. I was born and raised in this community. Dynastic leader of
the community has a complete control over every aspect of life of the community members. Though Ahmedies pretend to be very liberal sect of Islam but in fact their beilef system is very close to Wahabi sect. Their main agenda is establishing supermacy of their version of Islam by wiping out all other religions and systems from the world. They are orthodox to the core and force their women to wear head-to-toe Burqa (though this is not strictly enforced in Western countries). Personal freedoms are non existent within the community and every member act like a spy to the other members. Every member has to pay around a dozen kind of religious taxes. Punishment for violating the rules (unless you are a rich or member of the "holy family") or questioning the "divine" leader normally results in severe social boycott by the family and community.

My purpose of writing this is not to support persecution of Ahmedies in Pakistan and other Muslim countries but to provide a background for the readers.

"... biggest poison for Muslims worldwide: religious bigotry."

This shall mean that a single Muslim could decide whether he wants to be bigoted or not. Yet, the Islam is simply bigoted in itself. If you are a "faithful", real Muslim, you have to be bigoted because your faith is bigoted, you have no choice at all.

Muhammed clearly says in his lousy Koran (which he made-up) that Christianity had been invented by former Muslims which had turned apostate from the genuine Islam. Hence, in Muhammad's eyes every Christian is an "infidel" which has forsaken the alleged genuine faith of Abraham, the alleged Religion of Truth. This causes that a real Muslim can consider a Christian only as a second-class person which he is allowed to handicap, and which he doesn't have to love, rather to hate. That is the dark mystery of Islam, and the Koran.

The only faith which causes love to all people independent from nationality, belief, colour, social status, etc. is genuine Christianity. Jesus Christ has died for the whole mankind, and by that he proved his love for the whole mankind, that means for every single human being which will ever live on this damned planet. I as a Christian have to imitate the love of Jesus Christ. Of course, it is good to tell the people the gospel but I will still love them even when they don't accept it. I mustn't be the judge of my fellow human beings, that is God's task, but my task and responsibility it is to love them with Christ's love (of course, criminal people are a case for the authority, don't get me wrong).

Muhammad presumed to be the divine judge of the mankind but in fact he was a murderer, a thief, a womanizer, everything which is nasty was found in Muhammad. Consequently, a follower of Muhammad can never be a loveable man but must rather be a beast or a monster like his master, and I guess that worldwide the Muslims more and more get this reputation.

Dear Muslim, if you want to change then accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ who died and rose again also for you (even for me). Get baptized and metaphysically connected with the releasing power of Jesus' death and resurrection. Die for the sin, and enter Christ through faith and baptism. Get a better life in Jesus.

Yes, you are right, I agree with you. The reason is that wolves in sheep's clothing have infiltrated the churches and corrupted them. We need a new Reformation by a man like Luther or Bonhoeffer. Genuine Christianity is good in itself. The problem is a distored sort of Christianity which makes people rather bad than good.

From the studies of Armstrong, Rushdie, Hirsi Ali, Richardson and Bayhaqi----–

The Five Steps To Deprogram 1400 Years of Islamic Myths:

( –The Steps take less than two minutes to finish- simply amazing, two minutes to bring peace and rationality to over one billion lost souls- Priceless!!!)

    Are you ready?

Using "The 77 Branches of Islamic "faith" a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi as a starting point. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true "faith" (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings." i.e. a nice summary of the Koran and Islamic beliefs.

The First Five of the 77 Branches:

    "1. Belief in Allah"

aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc. should be added to your self-cleansing neurons.

"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."

Evolution and the Big Bang or the "Gi-b G-nab" (when the universe starts to recycle) are more plausible and the "akas" for Allah should be included if you continue to be a "crea-tionist".

"3. To believe in the existence of angels."

A major item for neuron cleansing. Angels/de-vils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hitt-ites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc. No "pretty/ug-ly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as f–airies and "tin–ker be-lls". Modern de-vils are classified as the de-mons of the de-mented.

"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."

Another major item to delete. There are no books written in the spirit state of Heaven (if there is one) just as there are no angels to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.

Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the un-educated masses in line. Today we call them for-tune tellers.

Prophecies are also invali-dated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.

"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings
    be upon him) alone."

Mohammed spent thirty days "fasting" (the Ramadan legend) in a hot cave before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a neuron deletion of #5. #5 is also the major source of Islamic vi-olence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallu-cinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.

Walk these Five Steps and we guarantee a complete recovery from your Islamic ways!!!!

Unfortunately, there are not many Muslim commentators/readers on this blog so the "two-minute" cure is not getting to those who need it. If you have a Muslim friend, send him a copy and help save the world.

Analogous steps are available at your request for deprogramming the myths of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Paganism..

Qasim- You know that the reason you are a potential victim and your would-be-killers are would-be killers is a constellation of beliefs in things that are untrue and mostly imaginary?

Though the world knows little the shallowness fields, the fields will ever be harvested whatever the yields. A time to plant and times to raise Cain, and timely Life does venture onward thru winds and the rain. We who seed and are seeded with faith of the nurturing ways, will find nothing on earth truly worthy of praise. We come into this world clueless and without, while the shameless will venture forth ever to shout. Love therefore and always henceforth know this today, that willing or not all things come toward the presence of may. Therefore love the doves of peaceful means pleasure and take no thoughts of material treasure.

lionlylamb, resort! There is no caveat to the Klein bottle, and there will be no gold watch for the unspoken zero.

Focus your nose on the test tube. Stay succulently upon your velodrome and fear not the coming of the essential kangaroo. Strawberries are your incidental chemistry. Present the fulcrum in advance of the gypsum cookie, for as the tree is combed, so goes the predicate. Expand quietly but do not relish.

Whether or not you agree with the plumber, harvest away ye hearties. Kalabash in Friebourg but not in spanners while it's raining. Bring out the mustard but flap flap flap until takeoff. Why would you say such a thing in the presence of the substrate? 64. 1112. Welcome to the new sandwich lumberyard. Bus stops follow movement, or do they?

The impediment to your posterior is large but can be dissected with chestnuts. Obermeyer. Glasnost and shallot cookies will do the main job when a steamshovel is too distant for pomegranate.

The article made me think of the Clash song "Know Your Rights".
    All 3 of them:
#1. You have the right not to be killed.
#2: You have the right to food money.
#3 You have the right to free speech (providing of course you are not dumb enough to actually try it).

"I’d hoped that 2012 would bring a revolution among Muslims and Muslim-majority nations to free oppressed minds." – Islam freeing oppressed minds? Any religion freeing oppressed minds go against itself.

Words of thoughtfulness I do bleed.
Traversing all natures of thought filled means,
Isn't truly worth a hill of beans.

"Ahmadi Muslims believe Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) is the long awaited messiah and Mahdi the Prophet Mohammed foretold, sent to unite mankind and establish peace."

Well, he wasn't very successful was he. Within a decade of his death, World War II would have broken out and been fought, resulting in more deaths than any other war in human history.

Soon after, World War II breaks out, resulting, again, in more deaths than any other conflict in human history. And, of course, the holocaust – the systematic extermination of 6 million of the Jews the author's prophet supposedly wanted to protect.

Even today, the followers of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad are subject to worldwide ridicule, violence and disdain. If this is a messiah "sent to spread peace" he is a hopeless failure.

Might I suggest another approach to 2013 which will be just as safe for the author. Seriously question your belief in sky-fairies and open your mind to the (not too ridiculous) idea that there is no god, ghost, messiah or goblin looking out for us.

Colin: This article by QR is to highlight the persecution Ahmadis and other 'different' but peaceful sects within or outside Islam are facing in 2013. There is no question being raised for a theological debate of whose ideas are right or wrong. The only point he's trying to make is that no 'different' person or idea should be persecuted. It is against Islam. It is against common sense and it is against our common human values. The point you raised that the founder of the Ahmadiyya failed to provide peace to the world is absolutely senseless. How can you claim that the world could not achieve peace when people rejected his peaceful views. And the people who accepted him, as a reformer and the Messiah of peace, achieved the heightest levels of peace at individual and on societal levels. They are being severely persecuted but even then they remained peaceful not only in Pakistan but in every corner of the world. And this is what Mirza Ghulam Ahmad came for. I hope a day comes when the vast majority of the Muslims and non-muslims accept his views and the world becomes far more peaceful than what it is in 2013. Stay blessed!

      Colin,

The persecutions of the religious by the religious for religious reasoning seems to not be very religious, religiously stating.

The definition of a "peaceful" religious sect is: a religious sect that is a tiny minority in its society.

Dear Qasim Rashid: may Allah always keep you safe. Ameen. You speak for those who know, first hand, what's the worst form of religious persecution is. And how it feels when you are being bullied, harassed and threatened on day to day basis.
