Christians divided on gun control

One of the most intense battlefields in today's gun control debate is happening inside Christianity.

Christians of every stripe; conservative, moderate and liberal tend to agree with the Gospel's message of love and peace. However, they don’t agree on what that Gospel message means.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

    By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

    Earth From Space

Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS

    Program Description

"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

The one belief that all "christians" do agree on is that of freedom of self-rights.
They all wear the mark of liberty on their forheads and believe that it is rigbt to be free to worship any "god" as per one's justification.
This is their god if fortresses and have made this their first love.

BUT IT IS ONLY CHRIST THAT WILL RULE...and none will say that it is right to be free to own and use guns.

As a Christian and a gun owner I feel we have the right to own guns I have a gun for hunting and all I use it for is deer hunting. Guns dont kill people, people kill people. In the latest shootings people were holding the guns the guns didn't just walk into the schools or movie theaters and pull there own triggers no people pulled the triggers people had the guns. Should Christians be divided on gun control absolutely not because Exodus 20:13 "you shall not murder." does not just mean you shall not murder with a gun

As a Christian and a gun owner I feel we have the right to own guns I have a gun for hunting and all I use it for is deer hunting.

Good for you. I assume that when you aren't deer hunting, that gun is locked up and secure and unable to be used by anyone to do unspeakable things with?

Guns dont kill people, people kill people.

Bull pucky. People with guns kill people. Sure, people kill people with other weapons too. No one kills 26 people with a knife or rope in the amount of time an assault rifle can kill 26 people.

In the latest shootings people were holding the guns the guns didn't just walk into the schools or movie theaters and pull there own triggers no people pulled the triggers people had the guns.

This is among the lamest things I've heard people say. The reason the body counts were so high in either of these shootings was that someone who had no business getting their hands on an assault rifle had access to an assault rifle. There is NO reason anyone who doesn't plan on shooting and killing as many people as possible should have one of those guns. None. Period. Stop.

Should Christians be divided on gun control absolutely not because Exodus 20:13 "you shall not murder." does not just mean you shall not murder with a gun.

I'm not even sure that makes any sense. If you own a gun for hunting and you hunt to feed your family, that's great. Provided that you're following the laws of the land, and you're not just killing for sport, etc. I have no problem with having a gun in the house for protection either, provided you are following the laws, and have been trained to use it and keep it safely locked away when not being used, either to practice at a range or cleaned or to defend yourself.

I believe the conflict for Christian arises because of the teachings attributed to Christ, you know the non-violence, turn the other cheek, love your enemies stuff.

      January 8, 2013 at 3:28 pm |
    • TC

No Dear, people with GUNs kill people, in MUCH MUCH higher numbers than people without guns. That's a simple fact.

A gun isn't evil in and of itself, but is the the ready availablity of guns designed to do much more than hunting deer something christians should support, knowing the carnage and suffering they cause?

Or how about shoulder launched rocket launchers?

      No, guns don't kill people.
But guns make it very easy to kill people, and assault rifles make is easy for a person to kill many people in a very short period of time.

First off God is not going to tell me to do damage with a gun or any other weapon. Second off God did not tell those mothers to kill their kids and as to the as the kids were the devil's offspring comment children are innocent until they understand the gospel of Jesus Christ and that they need him as their savior. That is called the age of innocence but the age of innocence doesn't have a set age either

Jesus isn't going to return. You are just lost in your illusions and indoctrination. Heck, even Jesus said it would happen in the lifetime of his listeners, and that time slot ended 1920 years ago. Jesus was wrong, and gods cannot be wrong. Therefore, Jesus was not a god. He was wrong about how prayer works absolutely, including having a mountain throw itself into the sea. Christianity is therefore false.

Not worried about Jesus or Christianity or any other delusion. I exist in the real world, and I don't need illusions to cope, especially not the insane illusions of religion.

"He was wrong about how prayer works absolutely, including having a mountain throw itself into the sea." not literal there a mountain is a trial in life that you go through a spiritual mountain for example a person that has cancer can be told by a doctor they are on their dying breath and people pray for them and they get cured that sickness was a mountain hindering them from living and its gone. and the time of his listeners as long as someone is preaching the bible someone is listening ans that someone is classified a listener of Jesus Christ

The question is whether or not, as followers of Christ, Chistians should choose to support a gun culture such as we have in the US, understanding that tens of thousands of injuries and deaths will result from the use of those guns.

On the face of it, it seems VERY un-christlike to many of us, especially support for guns whose sole reason for existance is the killing large numbers of people in a short period of time.

    As noted previously:

Thomas Jefferson who wrote his own version of the bible did not know the meaning of 911, video cameras, dead bolt locks, home and car security systems, tasers, pepper sprays, silent alarms, and gps, We don't need assault weapons to keep us safe. And there is a reason we don't allow guns on airplanes.

The courts are not supposed to legislate, they are to hand down rulings. Congress legislates. Separation of church and state is to prevent the government from making all of us become Catholics, or Baptists, or Mormons, or any other religion, against our wills. It does not mean that public prayer is against the law. Again, courts have made this law. To my mind, having had the courts decree that creationism can't be taught alongside evolution means that the proponents of evolutionary theory clearly know that if allowed to happen their horse would end up losing the race.

Please present any verifiable evidence that your god exists and had the ability and desire to cause creation. Then, present verifiable evidence that your god (not any other god or gods) did cause creation and had intent to do so specifically for the reasons you claim.

      We need to start there.

But creationism is fantasy. Of CCURSE the coruts are often consulted when people object to fanasty being taught in a PUBLIC school.

      Sometimes, it's the only recourse.

  18. I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

Most fundamentalist 'Christians' are more concerned with the old testament and it's 'eye for an eye' judgmentalism than the 'turn the other cheek' teachings of Jesus.

I don't see the problem. We have a right to own guns in the USA. Most people that legally own guns do so for self defense and/or for hunting purposes. Where does the love and peace Christ teaches come into play at all?

    It is Called

Seperation of Church and State !
The courts have also ruled ID/creationism can't be taught in public schools in US.
26 states have created new (STEM) science standards for 2013.
    Don't forget it !
