Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

    By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

    Earth From Space

Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS

    Program Description

"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

Darkness is need by many creatures on this planet so there is a purpose to darkness, just like there is for light. They compliment each other in life. So NO darkness is not afraid of the light, it's equal to the light.

I look forward to a day when everyone allows everyone to be who they are and for the day when being or believing one thing does not immediately create an opposite against. Allowing those who are whatever they are to be just that, and that just because they are, doesn't automatically mean that someone who isn't has to speak against but remains complacent in whatever their is is and is able to speak constructively and informatively when asked or even if just wanting to share. And once done is able to walk away again complacent in their is or in their new is if affected and either way happy to have gained new insight and to live in a world that allows for true and absolute "freedom" while ensuring they have not hindered the rights of others in their is.

They were actually really smart to exclude the need to wear them under swimsuits. I think the Sikhs would do well to take that approach on turbans (has been a legal issue in pools), especially since it's really only the non-cutting of hair that's theologically significant.

      January 17, 2013 at 12:17 pm |
    • End Religion

I was going to say it was 'smart' of them to not have a visible sign but I backed off from that because I didn't want to get embroiled in a debate about it. I couldn't make up my mind if it was smart to hide visible signs of religion or not. They proselytize so one might think they'd want visible signs of their religion. However, since they are hidden perhaps they avoid battles of the pendant kind. I still don't have an opinion one way or another. I didn't know about the pool issue you mentioned, so thx for that.

God in Quran says, (holy Islamic scripture)

“They even attribute to Him sons and daughters, without any knowledge. Be He glorified. He is the Most High, far above their claims.” Quran [6:100]

“The example of Jesus, as far as GOD is concerned, is the same as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him, "Be," and he was.” Quran [3:59]

‘They said, "You have to be Jewish or Christian, to be guided." Say, "We follow the religion of Abraham – monotheism – he never was an idol worshiper." [2:135]

“Proclaim, He is the One and only GOD. The Absolute GOD. Never did He beget. Nor was He begotten. None equals Him." [112:1]

The Messiah, son of Mary is no more than a messenger like the messengers before him, and his mother was a saint. Both of them used to eat the food. Note how we explain the revelations for them, and note how they still deviate! [5:75]

It does not befit God that He begets a son, be He glorified. To have anything done, He simply says to it, "Be," and it is. [19:35]

“No soul can carry the sins of another soul. If a soul that is loaded with sins implores another to bear part of its load, no other soul can carry any part of it, even if they were related. ... [35:18]

O people, here is a parable that you must ponder carefully: the idols you set up beside God can never create a fly, even if they banded together to do so. Furthermore, if the fly steals anything from them, they cannot recover it; weak is the pursuer and the pursued. [22:73]

They do not value God as He should be valued. God is the Most Powerful, the Almighty.[22:74]

If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They follow only conjecture; they only guess. [Quran 6:116]

“There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in God has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. God is Hearer, Omniscient.” [2:256]

“God: there is no other god besides Him, the Living, the Eternal. Never a moment of unawareness or slumber overtakes Him. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who could intercede with Him, except in accordance with His will? He knows their past, and their future. No one attains any knowledge, except as He wills. His dominion encompasses the heavens and the earth, and ruling them never burdens Him. He is the Most High, the Great.” [2:255]

Atheists need a logo of our own so we can wear them and have t-shirts and decals for the car. The only ones I have seen are either unrecognizable as anything, or are too close to the anarchist A.

      January 17, 2013 at 1:06 pm |
    • BillB

Atheists don't need and never will have a logo or symbol because they believe in nothing but themselves. They carry around themselves already, so no extra symbol is necessary.

      January 19, 2013 at 1:09 pm |
    • Joe

The American Athiest Association does have a logo. You can check it out at http://www.athiests.org. And for all you "Holier than thou" types out there. You need to loosen your Bible belts. They're cutting off the flow of blood to your under evolved brain.

      January 19, 2013 at 1:28 pm |
    • Nathan

Except for the fact atheists share no common belief, moral tenets, history, culture, texts, goals, holidays, traditions, practices, places of gathering, or hierarchy...

The only thing being an atheist means is a lack of a belief in a god or gods. I don't need a logo for that. Especially when it will just inevitably morph into a symbol for something more, be a collection of beliefs, political actions, or something else.
