I guess there's hope that more accounts of the Holocaust may help us establish accountability. I hope no one still imagines that Hitler and a few Nazi's were the source, or even the German consciousness of the time. I think all of civilization includes the potential for genocide.

There should be a distinction between genocide and poor policy. Genocide has to be purposeful. In Uganda, there was a clear intent by one tribe to try and eliminate another tribe. Think of Stalin, a perpetrator of both genocide and poor policy. The mass execution and enslavement of the Kulaks was genocide. His poor agricultural policy was just a trsgedy which resulted in millions of deaths.

Akira. I'm very fortunate to have met some survivors. Some of the most honest, caring and giving people I have ever met. One couple, where I used to by my jeans and shirts from regulary, always greeted me by name, and we would chat. One day, after I enlisted, I went back, some two years later, in uniform. The woman rushed up to me and cradled my face in her hands an cried, for joy and for what I represented to her, an American army that liberated their camp. They are long gone now, and I miss them, but their memory, and the love they showed me, lives in my heart. It's sad what people can do to one another in the name of idealogy/religion.

We must never forget the lessons learned from Nazi Germany.
Akira. Yes I'm aware of that fact. My grandfather was from Poland, came over before WWI. He lost family to the camps as well. He would tell me about them. Hard for a youngster to know and understand. Seeing the numbers tattoed on my friends arms brought it home quite forcefully. I cried inside, it really hurt to know that some were willing to hurt them. It also made me very angry, and I'm not tolerant of those who would push/force their agenda on people.
WG, many years ago, while visiting my father in the hospital, I met an elderly woman who had survived and had the tattoo on her poor elderly arm; I wept.
I'll admit it: I cried openly.
To see a living testament of humanity's brutality was quite humbling to me...she was a feisty woman, full of grace and dignity, even at her advanced age.
