Files may reveal what the Catholic Church in Los Angeles knew about sex abuse

By Ben Brumfield, CNN

A California judge has forced the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to release some 12,000 pages of church documents revealing how it handled allegations of priest sexual abuse.

There were many - 192 priests and bishops were named in litigation, the archdiocese said.

"The cases span decades," Archbishop Jose H. Gomez said in a statement Thursday. Some go back to the 1930s.

Jesus said in Matthew 18:6 about those who hurt childre, "But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me–it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea!

Burn in hell gay rapist priests!

The intellectually dishonest Douglas continues his stock-in-trade.....false accusations against gay people because he CHOOSES to ignore the difference between being gay and being a pedophile. To compound his dishonesty, Douglas has now taken to posting his delusional tripe at an hour when he suspects it will go unchallenged. When said pedophiles burn in hell, Douglas, they'll be enjoying YOUR company.

I cannot help but think after reading all the comment on the religion blog that the single biggest benefit, to me personally, is that I could probably use religion to fleece a bunch of people such that myself and my offspring are well taken care of for the rest of our lives.

Seriously, if you can turn off critical thought and common sense so easily w.r.t. a certain "large" part of your life, then I am really foolish to not leverage that for my own benefit. Really, why should churches and religious leaders have a monopoly on the benefit of others gullible ways? Heck, I will probably even "enrich" their lives some how while "enriching" mine.

It actually makes me sad how lacking critical thought it ... and unwillingness to take 100% responsibility, etc.

Even just the notion that the Christian god is the only god is really arrogant. Of course, isn't the Muslim god the same as the Christian god? That certainly shows two somewhat radically different results that can come from believing in the "same" god.

But then again, how is this god any more "real" than the Hindu god or any other god worshiped throughout history whether Zeus, Ra, or the Giant Spaghetti Monster? A lot of it comes down to "when" but a lot of it comes down to the political aspirations associated with the gods. If you look at the mythology of gods over human history, modern gods have far more influence over individuals and hence are much more effective political tools of control and oppression.

There is hope though .... one of my children is in a class at school that is predominantly really smart kids. He tells me that though these children's parents may practice religion that very few kids in his class believe in god. Of course, there is a strong correlation between being atheist and intelligence. I wonder why that is?

If my life sucks, I know it is not because of my relationship with god, but because of me and my relationship with those around me. Work my ass off, treat others (who deserve it) better, and just politely avoid those that are not good people.

I do not need a "god" to create a sense of morality for me and in fact I find that my atheist friends are far more moral across a much wider sphere of interaction with people and the world around them then my religious friends. I find they are far less likely to create "justifications" for their bad behavior even though they are strong critical thinkers. Perhaps that comes from not having a moral compass purely defined by someone else?

Are there any Catholic priests who AREN'T child molesters? Makes you wonder.

    February 3, 2013 at 5:18 pm |

What an ignorant comment. The numbers are that less than two percent have committed these crimes. A smaller percentage of priests have commited these crimes than school teachers and coaches. It gets more attention because the structure of the Catholic Church makes a bigger pool of money for lawsuits (can sue a diocese rather than an individual lutheran or baptist Church) and because of the stands the Church takes against society. Protestant pastors as well are as big offenders or worse than Catholic priests. Check out the work of Phil Jenkins who is a protestant and has studiedd the matter.

This one claims priests don't abuse more than average: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2010/04/07/mean-men.html

While that's slightly less disturbing, it certainly doesn't paint a very nice picture for the holier-than-thou type...

      February 3, 2013 at 8:28 pm |
    • nope

I don't care what the percent is. Child abuse is disturbing when it's committed by anyone. But it takes a back seat to the repulsiveness of the church in its handling of the abusers. The church itself is complicit in the abuse because hiding abuse and moving abusers facilitates further abuse. No one can deny that fact – not even the pope who has personnally had a hand in the hiding and moving of abusers.

The church should be sued until bankrupt.

They knew very well that their ranks were infested with gay , predator, priests and did nothing about it.

Now liitle boys who were sodomized have grown into disturbed men, damaged forever.

Castration of the perps is a good start for removing the predatory gay urge for illict coitus with children
from the perpetrators of this sinful wicked practice.

This can be done under local anesthesia, after which they can recover in a prison cell with a life sentence of hard labor
under solitary confinement so they can never hurt anyone again..

Yeah, they get to lounge on a chaise all week, wrapped in maybe a towel while altar boys feed them wine and cheese. Once a week they have to look up a bible passage and then makeup an hour's worth of horseshit around it to feed to the Sunday sheep. Afterwards, go collect the paycheck, maybe a little extra out of the collection plate, and back to the chaise and altar boys. Ah, the honourable priesthood.

what i do know is that most of the cathloic clergy are evil and abusers, i was abused by them too, but i was catholic but i am actually a Hebrew Judean.

i do as Yeshua Mashiah instructed and try to help people good or bad and Israel is not a religion it never was, its a way of Life but sadly many have turned away from that moral Life. A few of try to maintain it all be a minority.

The catholics have conned their way with people but remember that many allow it so this is how the catholics can maintain their seeming authority. Its sad but their time is limited as they have already imploded, there is no honour amongst the bad. See what is happening to them already.

Mankind's entire pantheon, including Jesus son of god and the Abrahamic god itself, never existed. All religion is a fraud. Calling beliefs "unaffiliated spirituality" or other hogwash, while still holding out for some sort of pseudo-christian being or afterlife, does not help one dodge this bullet. If you suffer from a brand of the delusion that holds any of it as "reality," it is no less crazy than any other.

Who and Why and What to Do????->>

Obviously ordination in any religion is not as-surance of good behavior !!!!!

Neither is coronation!!! e.g. Henry VIII, King David.

Neither is marriage as 50% of those men convicted of pedophilia are married.

Neither is being elected president of the USA!! e.g. Billy "I did not have se-x with that girl" Clinton, John "Marilyn Monroe" Kennedy".

Neither is possessing super athletic skill!!! e.g. Tiger "I am so sorry for getting caught" Woods.

Neither is being an atheist or pagan or football coach since pedophilia is present in all walks of life.

If someone is guilty of a crime in this litany of "neithers" they should or should have been penalized as the law dictates to include jail terms for pedophiliacs (priests, rabbis, evangelicals, boy scout leaders, married men/women, football coaches), divorce for adultery (Clinton, Kennedy, Woods), jail terms for obstruction of justice (e.g. Mahoney, Lynn, Clinton, Cardinal Law) or child endangerment (Sandusky, Paterno, Lynn, et al) and the death penalty or life in prison for murder ("Kings David and Henry VIII).
