Muslim activists aim to reclaim the word 'jihad' with ad campaignBy Jonathan Helman and Athena Jones, CNN (CNN) - A Muslim activist group has launched a new ad campaign to reclaim a word they say has been abused and distorted by Muslim extremists and by anti-Muslim groups. The MyJihad ad campaign is using print ads and social media to educate the public about what they say is the true meaning of the word "jihad." The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the term as "1: a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty; also: a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline" and "2: a crusade for a principle or belief." Jihad is what you do after you shout out Allah hu Akbar.
I'm not muslim and I don't know much about it, but I read somewhere that "jihad" was supposed to mean an internal war..between a persons own thoughts not an external war. Sounds like a nicer option.
Perhaps well-intentioned, this is most likely just going to make more people think Muslims are terrorists. It's akin to the swastika – not originally the Nazi symbol, but trying to reclaim it just isn't going to happen.
The Barneys of the world have forever been tainted in the public mind by the mediums. Hillary plans on Wrighting this injustice with a cheerful war, gay so to speak.
