Pope delivers one of his final messages

By Hada Messia and Josh Levs, CNN

(CNN) – Pope Benedict XVI led tens of thousands in a prayer for strength Sunday and thanked followers for their support during his second-to-last Angelus prayer as pontiff.

"Today we contemplate Christ in the desert, fasting, praying, and being tempted," the pope said to an unusually large crowd at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.

"As we begin our Lenten journey, we join him and we ask him to give us strength to fight our weaknesses. Let me also thank you for the prayers and support you have shown me in these days. May God bless all of you!"

Good and bad exists. It's the nature of humanity.

Just because there are good people and bad people in this world in NO way proves the existence of ANY deity. Long before your "god" was being worshipped, there were good people and bad people. And all those deities that they prayed to, you'll readily admit, do not and never did exist.

@ ER .. be careful with your ana'logies... a pallet of cinder blocks CAN be quite useful for something. However, this "humanoid" (CC) is of no real use whatsoever.

I was unaware of any "antichrist doctrine". Have you read it? Where can I get a copy of that text?

      February 18, 2013 at 8:01 am |
    • ?

Lol?? SAYS (because seyz is lazy and illiterate) I am an anti-christ?
      Read the words of Jesus:
Mathew 7:1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Good and bad are natural conditions of humanity. No anti-christ involed, just an observation on reality, which judging from you posts, you are lacking recognition of.

      February 18, 2013 at 8:03 am |

mirosol, you must be one of Truth Prevails 🙂 snowflakes. I quoted you the text.

      February 18, 2013 at 8:10 am |
    • Mirosal

So, your text is a fictional work created BY MAN over the span of 1000 years, and com'piled BY MAN 1700 years ago, translated innumerable times BY MAN into almost every language on the planet, and this is ACCURACY for you? Think of it this way .. you'll readily say that every "god" worshipped by man is false, or doesn't exist, right? Ok then, why would your "god" be any different? Because there's a book about it? That's a valid reason??? Not hardly. Think a little harder next time.

The slaves are the obese and the lazy who overeat and use mind-altering drugs such as todays anti-depressants, NOT those following The Way of Jesus Christ and his early followers who refused to take drugs for their depression related issues.
A nationwide obesity epidemic has spread from these slaves to even children and family pets. Those enslaved to se x also spread STDs and even AIDS. Those enslaved to violence spend long hours playing violent video games or being fans of violent sporting events. Those enslaved to money place their hopes for the future on that money, and do slave for money yet remain deep in debt, and think their own children will inherit that debt and pay it for them.
The truth is...the vast majority of Americans (even those calling themselves "christians") are slaves of most anything other than The Way of Jesus Christ just as their leaders are not true slaves of Christ. They all slave for and attatch themselves to various corrupt systems of religion in bed with governments and finance.

    February 18, 2013 at 6:14 am |
    • End Religion

it appears your redefinition of slavery is wide enough to include nearly any activity, which would be the opposite of slavery. You have the logic of a well-watered turnip.

    • Saraswati

You do realize that a recent study found church goers more likely to be obese?

      February 18, 2013 at 8:49 am |
  3. Answerman

@End Religion. Yes. Governments will be outlawing organized religions in the near future for it is so written in God's word. (glad we agree on ending orgaized religions) As far as those who are slaves to se x, drugs, and money, yes, even many who call themselves "christians" are slaves to those things as are their religious leaders, and also slaves of warmongers and war machines.
There is a "Freedom of the sons of God" that no man enslaved to breaking God's laws and remaining enslaved to his own inherited imperfections (sins) could possibly know of and is why you call lovers of Christ Jesus "slaves" without seeing those enslaved to se x, violence, and money. A better example of a "slave" in the sense you use would be more-like an obese man addicted to prescription drugs and flying the flag of whatever country he was born in and a slave for the government of that country. Those who strive to be like Jesus are NOT slaves. They are sheep who know the sound of their master's voice and follow Jesus, not men

I don't believe America would outlaw religion, however it certainly doesn't need to give it any special consideration such as a tax-free status. There is nothing "foretold" in the bible. It's just nonsense that idiots apply to whatever makes them feel special, like Nostradamus verses or a Rorschach ink blot. There is no god of israel, enough already.

    • A Grim Fairy Tale

Today is the story of Topher, the Boy Who Cried Evidence

A Christian-boy, who watched the Belief Blog, brought out the others three or four times by crying out, "Evidence! Evidence!" and when the others came to see what he had, found sillyness and double-talk.

One day, Topher thought he really did have evidence, and yelled "Evidence! Evidence!" yet again. But no one wanted to listen to his twisted gibberish, and he was left to mope in his deluded litle bubble.

There is no believing a liar, even when he speaks the truth.

"Topher, do you even know anything about the history of the bible, who actually wrote it? The books that were omitted and why?"

OK, let's talk about it. I do know about the history of the Bible. As far as the authors, there were 40 different ones, so it depends on which book we're talking about. Generally, though, they were eyewitnesses of the events they wrote about, especially in the NT.

Omitted books didn't pass the tests they were given. Some were too "new" ... meaning they weren't written soon enough to have been written by whom they claimed to be written by (Gospel of Thomas). Or they taught things that were contrary to books already established as being the Word of God. Things like that.

You have been master of the remote for all the long years we've been together, but at last it's my turn and my choice and I choose what my Lord would have me choose, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is on.

The killing done, the gore seeped down through the floor heating vent of the Vicorian home. The foul stench hissing off the heated iron below like fat dripping on hot coals. Jesus, I have done what you asked. I have spilled his blood in your name my Lord. I am ready.

  13. Ungodly Discipline

Atheists come in all shapes, sizes and colors, but one thing we have in common is common sense. The anamorphic judeo/christian god of the bible simple cannot exist. It is not an opinion, it is a fact. There is nothing that supports any other conclusion.

Calling an opinion a fact doesn't make it so.

Poltergeist, I agree. That is why I posted a factual statement, rather than an opinion. Do you disagree with me?

You've got to love facts. They exist, which is more than you can say for God.

    Jesus says in Matthew 6:7-8
"When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words over and over again and again. Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him."

  17. Reality

His final message will hopefully be the following:

(only for the new members of this blog)

The Apostles' Creed 2013: (updated and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
    Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

    Amen

    • Correctlycenter

If God doesn't exist, then who created the heavens and the earth and all living things on it? I believe that only an Intelligent Designer could have created everything. Things don't just come into existence out of nothingness to form stars, suns, planets, asteroids, moons, earth, sky, elements, water and us...

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

There's the key: You said "I believe." Fine. You can believe whatever you wish. Don't pretend it's fact.

o Think infinity and recycling with the Big Bang expansion followed by the shrinking reversal called the Gib Gnab and recycling back to the Big Bang repeating the process on and on forever. Human life and Earth are simply a minute part of this cha-otic, sto-cha-stic, expanding, shrinking process disappearing in five billion years with the burn out of the Sun and maybe returning in another five billion years with different life forms but still subject to the va-ga-ries of its local star.

      February 17, 2013 at 10:06 pm |
    • VanHagar

@End Religion...you state: "you are made from the stuff of exploded stars" At some point you will have to accept the inevitable that you can't explain what we came from simply by nature..where did the stars that exploded come from? Whatever your answer is, the question remains...where did that next thing come from? And so on and so on. The only plausible answer is that there exists something that is beyond nature...something supernatural.

    • End Religion

VanHager, that is a possibility, but to run around assuming one knows the mind of this possible thing when one can't is incredibly childish. If something took the spacetime to create the universe and all its vastness I can't see why any human would put eggs in the basket of it being something so tribalistic as the god of israel. It would be comical if it weren't so sad.

      February 18, 2013 at 3:44 am |
    • End Religion

@VanHagar: another possibility is that universes are on a "plane of universes" or a "multi-verse" and is eternal without a prime mover. Black holes could be responsible for absorbing and/or birthing universes. Science is beginning to look at the interesting relationship between the Big Bang and black holes, since the Big Bang was an explosion of a infinitely dense packet of particles, and black holes seem to be infinitely dense phenomena which suck up ANY object in the universe and either 1) makes it disappear (Hawking), or, 2) smears the object's particles around the black hole

We don't know the answers. But to suddenly ascribe this to an some god that wants you to keep slaves, continually praise it, not work on certain days of a week (as if a week or given day would mean something to a god), and all the other tribalistic human attributes that peoples want to foist onto the "thing" they feel is protecting them in this cold universe is just intellectually bankrupt.

      February 18, 2013 at 4:22 am |
    • VanHagar

@End...I wan't arguing for the existence of the God of the Bible (although I could). My argument was direcred at your critic of CC's argument for intellectual design...and you haven't refuted that at all. You speak of black holes as if they could exist naturally–where does the energy come from? Again, my point holds up–every time. It has to be something beyond nature.
