Atheist group apologizes for misquoting Palin, but defends billboard's intent

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – An atheist group that misquoted former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in a billboard in Texas is apologizing to the Republican and correcting the mistake. But it continues to defend the “intent and context” of the effort.

CNN first reported on Sunday that American Atheists, a group known for its in-your-face tactics, was sponsoring a billboard calling out Palin for something she said while on Fox News.

“We should create law based on the God of the Bible,” the billboard reads.

The only problem: That isn’t what Palin said.

In an interview with Fox News’ Bill O'Reilly, Palin addressed the growth in American secularism by saying of America's founding fathers “we would create law based on the God of the Bible and the Ten Commandments,” not “should.”

Dave Muscato, the group’s public relations director, said in a release that because American Atheists holds itself “to the highest standards of accuracy,” it will “move the quotation marks at our expense, so they do not include the word ‘should.’”

Both Muscato and David Silverman, the group’s president, however, stand by the “intent and context” of the billboard.

“While I admit that the word 'should' should technically not be inside the quote, the meaning was correct,” Silverman said in a statement to CNN.

Silverman initially defended the misquotation, tweeting that “Sarah Palin was NOT Misquoted” and directing readers to a headline from a Huffington Post story. The story headline, however, was also incorrect and did not put quotes around should.

Silverman was critiqued for that double down. Hemant Mehta, an influential atheist blogger at Patheos, wrote that a mistake like this “sheds doubt on the whole idea that atheists are the ones who are being honest with you.”

Although Silverman said in an e-mail to CNN that he believes “Ms. Palin would stand by what we have quoted her as saying,” he said “all future quotes will be exactly as spoken.”

A spokeswoman for Palin failed to respond to CNN’s request for a comment and has not contacted American Atheists about the mistake.

Although Palin’s billboard is getting the most attention, it was one of seven ads going up around the Dallas and Austin, Texas, area. Also featured were: former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, the Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, and Benedict XVI, now the pope emeritus.

Santorum is condemned for when he told an Iowa crowd last November that, “our civil laws have to comport with a higher law: God's law,” while Gingrich is criticized for a remark he made at a CNN debate on October 18, 2011, in Las Vegas. “How can I trust you with power if you don't pray,” Gingrich posited.

Virginia Davis, spokeswoman for Santorum, thanked American Atheists for the publicity.

“At a time when many are trying to remove God from the public square, the senator is appreciative of someone helping him very publicly express his strong belief that we are one nation under God,” Davis wrote in an e-mail to CNN.

The billboards cost the group $25,000 and will be up for the rest of the month.

American Atheists is used to controversy around their billboards.

Last March, the group targeted Muslims and Jews with billboards that called God a "myth" in both Arabic and Hebrew and the same group posted a billboard around the holiday season in 2010 that read, “You KNOW it's a Myth. This Season, Celebrate REASON.”

Both these billboard campaigns generated resistance and praise from the communities around them.

Silverman, who has been criticized for this brand of atheism, has long defended the tactic, saying confrontation is meant to “grow the cause and benefit the country.”

Some believe that celibacy is appropriate for certain people, or for certain positions. It's ridiculous. Celibacy is unnatural and will continue to cause problems for the religious institutions that employ it.

Many of the people from these same institutions advocate against abortion, but don't understand the realistic benefit of the morning after pill or even basic contraception; their unrealistic wishful thinking is causing the death of many at the hands of disease. Realistically, many abortions could be avoided if a morning-after pill were not viewed as such an evil option. Many of these same people bring children into the world at a high pace, and then would prefer that the rest of society take over and educate their children in their particular brand of religion when they don't plan well.

In the U.S. recently we learned of the head of LCMS chastising a minister of that church for participating in a joint service for the victims of the Newtown school shooting.

One sect calls homosexuality an abomination while the next one in the same denomination is already performing gay marriage.

One sect, the Westboro Baptist Church believes Americans are being killed at war because America is too kind to "fags".

One sect believes that Jesus and Satan were brothers and that Christ will return to Jerusalem AND Jackson County, Missouri.

One sect believes women to be subservient, while another sect in the same denomination promotes equality between the sexes.

Conflicted right from the very beginning, Christianity continues to splinter and create divisions and more extremism as it goes.

Has anything improved with Christianity since 200+ years ago?

Thomas Jefferson, POTUS #3 (from Notes on the State of Virginia):

Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.

James Madison, POTUS #4, chief architect of the U.S. Constitution & the Bill of Rights (from A Memorial and Remonstrance delivered to the Virginia General Assembly in 1785):

During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution.

John Adams, POTUS #2 (in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, 09/03/1816):

I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved – the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced! With the rational respect that is due to it, knavish priests have added prostitutions of it, that fill or might fill the blackest and bloodiest pages of human history.

Ben Franklin (from a letter to The London Packet, 3 June 1772):

If we look back into history for the character of present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers of persecution. The primitive Christians thought persecution extremely wrong in the Pagans, but practised it on one another. The first Protestants of the Church of England, blamed persecution in the Roman church, but practised it against the Puritans: these found it wrong in the Bishops, but fell into the same practice themselves both here and in New England.

Thomas Paine (from The Age of Reason):

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

Jesus we want to thank you for shinning your light on our lives to show just how far we all are from your picture of absolute goodness.
Let us never forget that much good came from the churches, schools, hospitals and orphanages established in your name when the people were moved by Holy Spirit.
Let us never forget it was the Christians who stepped up for; women’s rights, the end of slavery, the poor, the lost and true freedom under God.

    • Bob

Uh, fred, don't try and present your vicious Christian blood cult as being supportive of an end to slavery or of women's rights. We know better of how your book of nasty, the bible, condones slavery, and demands horrid treatment of women. Take a look at these fine quotes from the awful owners manual of your Christian blood cult, and do try to get over your sicko Christian delusions:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

      Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Bob, one of the problems with the extremists in the Middle East is that they take these verses the way you represent them. This is not the case as your representation goes against what we know about God. If we have God figured out wrong then no one in their right mind could believe and maintain sanity. God is perfect goodness express God's main attribute.

fred, as usual, your statements are absurd, and plainly wrong. Again, think this through, and only then respond:

If you disagree with my interpretation of the Christian blood cult owners manual, then ask yourself how it is that your "perfect" "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. And why should we humans, its supposed creations, be blamed for its mistakes and inadequacies? Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself there.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

“how it is that your "perfect" "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book”
=>God is revealed through creation, the Bible and the Holy Spirit. The Bible is the story of Gods purpose and will for that creation addressing different cultures and audiences over time. That story reflects the attributes of God as revealed.

“that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", “
=>The Bible is a mirror and reflects back to the reader truth about heart and soul of that person. Just as we are each different our heart and soul is different. One interpretation would still yield different perspectives.

“why should we humans, its supposed creations, be blamed for its mistakes”
=>we are not. We are held accountable for what we do with what we were given.

“Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself there.”
=>this is a reflection of your soul not someone else. If there is that God of Abraham what should you be seeing? Jesus was the full reflection of the glory of God. There should be little confusion about the loving kind nature of Jesus. Remember how the Pharisees called Jesus Beelzebub or the devil for healing the blind and sick? How is it they saw one thing while John the Baptist saw another? This reflection you are picking up from the Bible needs to be figured out as it casts a shadow instead of light.

“your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally”
=>if God is who He says then perfect justice and perfect goodness will meet perfect mercy and grace when you and I face the eternal seeing our own reflection of our soul.

fred, your post is a huge steaming pile of circular reasoning. Let's try again, but this time give your posts some more thought. From the top again, let's take a look at precisely what your Christian book of horrors says, and what just a few of the problems with it are:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,

I went to Paris in France, I found a little romance,
She was a-walkin' down the boulevard.
I know I should've been good. I never thought that I would be double-crossin', Baby. Cross my heart!
But a little rockin' and a little wine got me thinkin' 'bout a little valentine.
What's a lonely boy to do? She looked so fine.

Chorus: How silly can you get? Yeah! Yeah! How silly can you get? Ooh, Yeah!
I never ever meant to stray, but when she looked at me that way,
the night was young and gay Paris made me forget.
How silly can you get? Yeah! Yeah! How silly can you get? Ooh, Yeah!
I didn't mean to hold her tight. Another fool turned out the light.
I only know she's in my arms to hold tonight.

I woke next day on my own, my little birdie had flown,
left a number of a telephone.
I walked right out on the street, spreadin' the hole in my jeans,
A piece of paper with a message on it.
Should I call her up or should I tear it up? If I call her up then we can rip it up.
What's a lonely boy to do? She looked so fine.

Chorus: How silly can you get? Yeah! Yeah! How silly can you get? Ooh, Yeah!
I never ever meant to stray, but when she looked at me that way,

Have you found your four leaf clovers and horse shoes, godless people?

I have found four leaf clovers before. They are sort of cool. When I was a kid, I dug up the plant I found one on and grew it in a pot. It produced many four leaf clovers, which I enjoyed giving away to friends. I saw them as a mutation, not a charm. I don't have any horseshoes, since I don't own a horse.

Are you holding your breath while crossing a tunnel?

No, but I occasionally beep my car horn when going through a tunnel.

Are you happy telling others that God doesn't exist and that the believers have no proof?

I don't discuss this with people IRL as a rule. If asked, I simply state that I don't believe in any god. Then I remove myself from the shit storm of arguments, proxy threats and invitations to "just give it a try" as quickly as possible.

On a comments blog, I do enjoy a good discussion.

Are you happy with the lack of control in your life?

I am very happy with my life. Because I was born in the USA I have a lot more control over what I do than many people. No one has control over everything in their life.

Are you satisfied wih what the guy in the wheelchair tells you?

Which guy in a wheelchair? I know a few people in wheelchairs, so you'll have to be more specific.

Are you satisifed with what other atheistic scientists tell you?

      Which atheistic scientists?

      Why are listening to them?

What a woman does with her body is not your business. You dolts who speak out against abortion tend to think you understand it when all you do is see one tiny side of it. You don't consider the factors at all. A woman should not be forced to proceed with a pregnancy that is the result of rape/incest or that will potentially cause her death or if she knowingly can't afford to keep the child or the child is not going to live a full life. In the end it doesn't matter what the reason, it simply is not your business.
As Science stated RvW and that settles it from the legal standpoint and thankfully that is all that matters, not your uneducated opinion.

@Truth, @Science, I don't think seeing sides or the law matters to most of these types of Christian. They believe:

      1. killing is forbidden by God
      2. abortion is an example of killing (and so is forbidden)
      3. what is forbidden by god must, in all cases, be avoided without exception

There are only a few ways you can address this given the existing beliefs of these particular Christians. You can:

      1. Show killing is not really forbidden, or not forbidden in the absolute sense that the speaker believes. Here we are addressing the Do Not Kill commandment. That one is on pretty solid ground with those Christians that are also anti-war and anti-death penalty, but for anyone who accepts war and/or the death penalty you can show that this is not intended as an absolute statement. You can also, (with even more immediate relevance) show that there are other circu’mstances where we (all of us) let people die for the greater good by the way resources used sparingly, but this is a bit too subtle for most people who need to believe in the false distinction between action and inaction.

      2. Show abortion is not an example of killing. Since this is what most non-religious folk believe it’s the most common approach. First you can show the utter lack of commentary in the bible regarding what counts as a person (as addressed in the commandments). Or second (and equally required) is to present the scientific evidence and address the usual set of weak arguments regarding the “uniqueness” of DNA and the like. These folks are usually quite ignorant of early fetal development and comparative biology in other species. It also helps to point out the logic used by pro-choice Christians themselves.

      3. Break the “god-forbids then must-do” link. There are two things you can address here. First is to point out the other commandments and interests of God that are affected by not allowing abortion and how those are balanced within Christianity. This is hard to do in an internet forum as a lot of these open up side tangents of discussion but is very effective if done well. The other route of course it to address the whole issue of Christianity. Since #2 is quite achievable I don’t know that this really needs to be done, but it is quite effective as most not bound by religion see a blob of cells as a blob of cells and not something higher than a baboon.

What does not, unfortunately, work and is not meaningful to these guys is any reference to
      1. other sides
      2. rights
      3. privacy
      4. the law

Given their assumptions and priorities those arguments hold no weight at all. It is not illogical for them to reject those arguments as they simply have no place at all in their world view. Referencing these things to a fundamentalist Christian is similar to them quoting bible passages to non-believers.

      @MEII,

You've got to wonder if some of these folks want pregnancy status on census forms. And where people aren't sure yet you'd do estimates based on other pregnancy data and questions women have to answer on the state of their mentrual cycle and last period dates. Imagine the redistricting. Populations with higher miscarriage rates would fare well. And you could may estimates on how many were carrying multiples based on race, age of mother and information we'd require on use of fertility treatments. On the other hand it would help tightenup immigration as pregnant women would need to fill out visa forms for their embryos and all visas would require a pregnancy test.

This is one of the least plausible arguments of Christianity. In all other areas belief follows evidence, and yet here you have to believe in order to believe. Additionally, people are introduced to the bible in a wide variety of different ways, and some not at all. There's really no way to swallow this bit of irrationality without already being in the circle either through upbringing or a deep emotional need to believe.

I know many Christians don't believe that the bible is some sort of litmus test for whom god thinks is acceptable. I would be interested in hearing from those Christians about why a better text isn't provided.

I agree with Saraswati. There seem to be so many degrees of christian belief from the casual, attend church once in a while, more for social contact than the dogma, to those whose whole life is consumed by thei beliefs. The posters on this blog that demand to know why those that do not believe as they do are the fanatics that even moderate chrstians would say do a disservice to their religion in general. What does a Chad or Live4Him, for example, hope to achieve by posting the same circular arguements every day? In my opinion untill christians can reproduce or prove that the supernatural events that their belief system is based on they have no reasonable or logical basis for their beliefs.

Believers hope to keep their heads above water by trying to keep a kind of symmetry going in their arguments. Religious faith and religious doctrine must have analogs in atheism. Arguments on belief in God are to be matched by arguments on disbelief in the same God. It's like the 4 knights game in chess, but where believers (black) don't grasp that they are one move behind.

    • Austin

Here is where I am at with your statement. I used to think Christians were the living dead. Zombies schitzophrenic live by the spirit not the flesh, in the world but not of the world. And I went on a rampage with it. I was overcome with emotion, and the argument was so inspired that it seemed in retrospect like thoughts and appalling realizations were coming from out of nowhere.
      A
Then I experienced the supernatural, numerous times to be honest. And I have to thank
God that he gave me the power to overcome those doubts that I recognize in all of you. He is the reason I simply set them aside. Do I know how the world began? Not everything. But I do know that the Holy spirit is a living ent.ity, supernatural, sovereign, and He knows your thoughts and doubts.

I don't want to offend you, but you need help to battle the doubts that Satan puts in your head. The faith that God gives is exactly what heals those doubts, and nothing else. I commend a scientific approach to evidence, but you can count on spiritual answers for what truly matters. Your spirit is what matters, not proof of something 10,000 years ago or longer.

If you stand I front of God and the bible is His word, which is the medium for a real spiritual experience, are you going to reject him because of a few choice sins, and a few ugly wars? Atonement is not a joke. Jesus judges sin and atones for it. You are justified and have yet to understand the scope of Gods love.

So, you did nothing yourself to bring about these convincing "supernatural" moments?

Maybe that will happen to all of us. Sorry, but if so, it will not be because of anything that you say. Let it be. If "God", "Jesus" or the "Holy Spirit" wants us, they'll know precisely what to do or say.

"Then I experienced the supernatural, numerous times to be honest."
Maybe you experienced something, but how do you actually know it was the "supernatural" and not just something you imagined, or misinterpreted? The human mind is easily fooled. Take, for example, the grid below. Most people "see" dots where the white bans intersect, but do you believe that they're actually there?

      [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YPUGLA7z_k&w=640&h=360]

"God that he gave me the power to overcome those doubts that I recognize in all of you."
Simply the belief in God would do the same thing, right? That's what you're arguing, isn't it? That you allowed yourself to believe in God first, and that belief made accepting God easy. Anyone could apply that equally as well to believing in aliens, astrology or a thousand other things that aren't based on actual evidence, like God.

"He is the reason I simply set them aside."
And you do because you love God, or at least the idea of God, right? Love is blinding, and a man who is in love simply doesn't care what faults his loved one actually has. A man in love can hardly be trusted to be acting rationally when it comes to his loved one, yes?

"If you stand I front of God and the bible is His word,"
If the Bible is his word then you really should expect it to be accurate, which brings us back to the beginning of the universe and knowing what happened 10,000 years ago. If you have any doubts as to what the Bible says about these things then something is terribly wrong with your statement above.

      March 7, 2013 at 10:34 am |
    • Austin

      @tim

Not "if its true" to me. God has revealed the truth of His word to me supernaturally. This is a fact. That is why when you question setting doubts aside because I am crazy in love, you are visualizing and rationalizing something because you don't understand it or believe it. The personal seal of the holy spirit, is something you experience personally. I am not asking you to have faith in my words. I am explaining how God gave me faith, which you can also experience through God, and not through my story.

It starts out as humble and having to trust God. A bit blind. But if you are sincere, then the Holy spirit takes over in a life and power that is from God. It is not a religious experience. Although unfortunately, many people are merely religious, and not necessaril filled with the spirit. Religion is dead. The spirit is life, Jesus Christ is resurrected and His holy spirit is the living God, your comforter and healer.

The Holy Spirit bears the truth of Gods word on a persons heart, in many different ways

Tom Tom, when you have one dream that was spectacular, revelation, you don't know what to do with the rest of them.

But I started writing them down. And one time I had four dreams about water, and it wasn't until a week or so went by that I did a word study on water, and realized that one of the dreams was a proverb in a very detailed dream scenario. It is one of the coolest things I have experienced. I was in a wh.ore house and I turned in a water spigot on the third floor, i went to the basement and the water had begun leaking through the ceiling. I was in the basement with naked prost.itutes and got kicked out for letting the water flood the place.

Much later I realized the other 3 had water too so I did a search, and....

      Proverbs 5:15-21
      New International Version (NIV)
15 Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
18 May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
      19 A loving doe, a graceful deer—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

I had been praying, before those dreams, about lust. And that is the dream I had. I had no recollection of the proverb I found.

Schizophrenia (/ˌskɪtsɵˈfrɛniə/ or /ˌskɪtsɵˈfriːniə/) is a mental disorder characterized by a breakdown of thought processes and by a deficit of typical emotional responses. Common symptoms include auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking, and it is accompanied by significant social or occupational dysfunction. The onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood, with a global lifetime prevalence of about 0.3–0.7%. Diagnosis is based on observed behavior and the patient's reported experiences. So yes, I would indeed diagnose our friend Austin here as a classic schizophrenic case.

That was a very long way of not addressing what I said. You stated that you have data, but didn't actually produce said data.

Dreams are not data. What you think your dreams mean is not data. What the bible says about dreams is not data.

I don't think you understand what data is.

I don't think that you're crazy and, if we were talking about an isolated thing, then you might have an argument, but where you see your dreams as some indication of God's presence others might interpret them as a reflection of your past lives, your suppressed memories of an alien abduction, or something else not as popular in our culture.

The common factor is that we all dream, and what we dream is usually some pretty freaky stuff, compared with what we usually experience while awake. There seems to be an endless number of possible supernatural explanations, but they cannot all be correct, can they? If reincarnation were real then the Christian idea of an afterlife doesn't work, for example. So this leaves me to either choose one explanation over another arbitrarily, or assume that the simplest answer is most likely what's happening, that all explanations are just imagined and that dreams are no more than the random constructs of our minds as they rest.

Now, if you were to set your present beliefs aside and, again with a bit of blind trust and sincere trying, couldn't you bring yourself to believe in reincarnation, alien abduction, or something else instead? If you really try, you could, but would that actually prove to you that you were wrong before?

      Acts 2:17.
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Do you remember Nebuchadnezzar and his dreams? Also, daniel, Joseph, many more examples.

I testify, to anyone, and I will not lie, that spiritual revelation, visions or dreams from a living sovereign , future knowing, living Spirit, revolving in the power of the Bible, communicating through scripture and other biblical based revelations, are not a myth. God is alive, He is risen, His spirit reveals truth.

Are you arguing that people did not dream until Bible times, and that people have not dreamt of other gods and realities? The shaman of our earliest, intelligent ancestors dreamt of spirits and animal guides. That was the original relationship humankind had with something it regarded as "beyond", so wouldn't there be a better claim to suggest that all other explanations, including the one of your God, are merely false interpretations of this? Perhaps coyote, that ancient trickster who predates the devil, has muddled your mind to the actual truth? Who can tell when one is dealing entirely with personal experience, eh?

    • Austin

I have had the full experience of hating God,and of the bible, and then like Paul, after I reached out to God in desperation, I started experiencing a sovereign salvation.

      John 1:1-4
      New International Version (NIV)
      The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

Let us make man in our image. Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham,Moses. There was no other religion before the Godnof creation had a spoken covenant, as he interviened and stayed with man from the beginning. At the same time religious mimicry started with the devil, and Cain .

My experience with my struggle with the name of Jesus, has through the word of God, proven to be a living power and communicating, shepherding spirit that is capable of direct intervention through the holy spirit, or angels. And I went through a period where

A demonic voice sang to me in a dream and forecasted a dead cat that I had seen only once
The cat was dea when I awoke and looked for it. The demonic spirit forecasted the dead cat in the dream.

Then I started having dreams about scripture at night, and I would read the next day realizing my dream the night before was about the scripture that I read, scripture I was not familiar with at all. No recollection of the entire book, let alone details. It happened 3 nights in a row, and a at least 3 other times around that spurt.

      Also in that same spurt
I had a dream about a kid loosing his money, and henlostmhis money thirty days later, and,
I had a wicked thought judging someone as not having spiritual light in his eye, or questioning his light, and that night, he had a dream about wether the people in the room had a special light in their eyes to see if they were possessed.

My thought was transcripted into his dream, and he had no clue about the biblical basis for light inthe eye, or of my thoughts about it.

This is like eight dreams, and having different scenarios. One of the dreams came through in a lesson presented by the bible study teacher. One a demon showed me a dead cat. 4-5 were about scripture I would read, One was a proverb about a struggle that I prayed I about and didn't know the proverb, one was about the the kid loosing money, and one was my thoughts coming utmin another kids dreams.

The kid who lost his money, was an aggressive and obnoxious to my sharing about my other dreams that started happening. He freaked out on me and was extremely vicious and rude. Mbut all these dreams, involved the future, and in different ways they demonstrated the sovereign and genius ability for the spirit to communicate in a supernatural way.

This all revolves around the word of God, and my willingness to testify to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is nothing special about me, but God is merciful and he loves you all. And you are all justified through the name and blood of Jesus.

Tom Tom, when the kid who was verbally attacking me on a daily basis was accusing , like you all call me schitzophrenic, and I said hey look, and I pulled out a piece of paper and showed him the dream I had thirty days later about about what was happening to him, it seemed possible that it was indeed another gift of the spirit.

One night I had a dream that I was touring a house and went out back and there was an above ground pool, with a wood deck around it and a privacy fence right on the deck.. I wrote it down. Two days later, the kid in the bunk next to me, pulled out a drawing, he was an architect, of a house he drew up for himself, with an above ground pool, with a privacy fence on the deck.

He had already known what I was experiencing, and he showed me this, I freaked out and pulled out the dream written down, and we both sat there with tears. He was going to bible studies with the bible study gathering so he loved it as much as I did.

Not every nonbeliever "hates" God and the Bible. For a lot of us, it's as simple as there coming a day when we put everything together and realize that God isn't actually real. That would make the Bible just another book written by humans and reflecting their ideology of the time. There's nothing there to hate in itself. Lots of books of that era are equally bigoted, superst.itious, nationalistic and ignorant of scientific fact, but this book is still held on faith to be indisputable truth by overly zealous believers, despite all the evidence against supporting such a belief, and people are suffering because of that. That's why we dislike these beliefs of yours.

If you reached out to God in desperation why should people just adopt God when they are not desperate, and why do you continue to believe in him even after your crisis has passed? If desperate enough people will cling to any straws, and maybe try anything to get out of their situation. Take for example the many "alternative" medical treatments that cancer patients sometimes find themselves trying. Are these rational choices that people would make when they were feeling relatively healthy? I suppose that, if I were to experience some dire crisis in my life I might try some really odd behavior too. I might start drinking in order to cope, maybe, but I just cannot imagine starting that now just to have it in place for when crisis comes, or continuing it after the crisis has passed. You probably see your life as just one crisis after another, but I guess I'm just not that unlucky, or is it dissatisfied?

Since Austin/Slander or whatever he is calling himself now is dumping bible bile on us by the gallon, let's have a closer look at what's really in his Christian book of nasty AKA the bible. Fine stuff like these choice quotes:

“As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live”
      Ez 3:11

Israel would have been guilty of murder had God not instructed them to do it. Slaves going to Egypt markets would have been worse off and deprived atonement, they were treated like family. That's what I was told anyway.

Bob, the animals sacrificed were atonements for sins, unintentional and intentional sins, they had different ways and animals for different aspects

Every one is a sinner, you probably have a vice, or have had a habitual sin you have struggled with, and coming to believe in sin at all makes you uncomfortable . This causes anger as your sin is exposed.

I can say this, because it is true for absolutely everyone. We are far more fallen than we admit. Look at history, and at the globe. This is the human condition.

This is the kind of drivel perverted degenerates like to try telling others because it makes them feel better about their putrid self loathing lives. The fact is there is no such thing as inherrited sin and you can be a kind, generous and loving person without any deity or God or disgusting religious to extort good behavior from you. I don't sin, I don't feel guilty about anything now that I left my Church. I love my wife and my daughter and I don't pray for forgiveness for anything anymore and I have never felt more alive or healthier. I am generous with both my time and my money to those in need and I take care of my responsibilities. Do I wish I got out for a run a bit more often? Sure. Have I ever had one to many bites of a dessert I regretted? Sure, but only because of the stomach ache, not because I feared I was angering a violent sadist in the sky who was going to torture me for eternity because of a moment of feeling like a glutton. In fact, I don't lie nearly as much as I used to when I was a minister telling the children in the congregation to be good or Santa won't visit them or telling the adults about heaven and heII and their souls being in peril when I had begun to doubt the supposed truth of it all. I have never been more guilt free, not because I don't care anymore, but because I care even more and now take responsibility for my own actions instead of trying to blame some invisible creatures for my bad or good behavior.

Let me go write it up..."

Bob and mass debater, my flesh remembers and feels all of that human logic. But it will do you no good, as your flesh will not be present in the high court of God.

My flesh feels like it would be better if life was a different story than the bible, but sin, evil, and the Holy spirit are real. We answer to creator God, and the struggle where you rely on God and live step by step the way he intended, righteously, shunning sin, and atoning through Christ, is the the way bothnGod and you are glorified. This life, is about JesusnChrist and eternal life. If yu think satanic deception, evil, and spiritual death are not factual realities, .........you aren't trying hard enough.

god is not responsible for Satans rebellion,
And just as you don't agree with everyone, you also fail to agree with God. That does not change other people, or God.
You are responsible the the effect that sin has on you, because you choose to sin. You also obviously choose not to agree with God. responsibility, and family love l was the plan. Sin entered the picture, and Christ was ready to redeem you. He knew that as a human, you would have a choice that he would forgive and pay the price of redemption to a Holy God.

" I can only imagine how you felt, like when you walk in to some church building from 1930 with the stale, building smell. Emplty, and dead. " This made me laugh a bit because my old congregation was in a very modern bright and beautiful building which was warm and inviting and there were lot's of hugs and smiles. The problem had nothing to do with the people who I love dearly, or the building that was wonderful, it was the message of segregation that I could no longer stand. This apartheid forced on believers as we are told we are not just separate and equal, we are separate and better, chosen people who were picking up the abandoned mantle of faith left by the tribes of Israel when they rejected Jesus. You may tell yourself you consider all people equal, but that is just another in a long list of lies you have to tell yourself to remain a Christian as you discard the remnants of your humanity.

Austin, I really do hope you get some mental health if you are hearing voices and having visions, they are not God or anything divine. They could be something sinister such as a mental disorder or possibly a carbon dioxide leak in your home. Please go see a doctor for not only do I fear for your safety but that of those around you.

The only people that Christians are supposed to avoid, are habitually immoral people inside the church, which was a flock.

Unbelievers who are not even in the spirit are all candidates for love and outreach.

Austin, stop dodging, coward. Respond directly for a change, or I'll just yank you back to the question again. Here it is:

How is killing and/or burning another creature (a "sacrifice") an appropriate response after a moral error or "sin"? Why would an omnipotent creature, a "god", need you to do any such thing? Pretty much all the premises and guidances of your disgusting religion in such matters are absurd, unwarranted, and stupid.

Do the world a favor and get over your harmful and cruel Christian superstitions already. Their time is long past, and really never should have been.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement.
Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

I guess the real question you have to ask yourself is, Can satan protect himself from a nuclear weapon? What about lasers?

We also have fire extinguishers and air conditioning, so it shouldn't be that tough. Plus, if your phoney baloney god IS real and there is such a thing as a real judgement day, why doesn't god just come and smite all the bad guys? what's he waiting for?

      Elliot,
That view is a real problem. Most religions think only their followers get to be with god in everlasting love. The vast majority have those beliefs because the most trusted people in their lives, their parents, told them that. Fact: at most, only one religion will be right.

So your contention is that the majority of people will be shunned by god because they believed their parents?

Sam, I realize the. Imy point with the verses i repeated and the handle "slander,". Is that demonic deception and false Christianians are predicted . This was one topic, I didn't even get to false teachers and false prophets, or apostates. This was from the topic, Antichrist .

There are so many verses about bad leaders under the name of Christianity, that for someone to insist hitler was a Christian, completely disregards THE BIGGEST biblical prediction , the procession of evil, deception, and Antichrist. Adolf hitler was a demonic power.

Are you blind and deaf? We are dealing with satanic evil and deception. If you think about how incapable you are to perceive the truth, then you start to realize the power of evil. I have the same problem, but I have a savior who provides faith and m any days I beg for it, because my flesh is so week.

      @Austin

You said, "We are dealing with satanic evil and deception."
Do you fear Voldemort? If not, why? He is just as likely to exist as your god or your god's right hand man, the devil.

You said, "If you think about how incapable you are to perceive the truth, then you start to realize the power of evil."
Without any evidence to support your claims of your imaginary friend's existence, it is no more likely to be real than the Tooth Fairy. Without any evidence to show that your imaginary friend is real, there is no way you can know if what you claim as truth, really is.

The notion of an evil force was put in place to keep sheeple, like yourself, from questioning the authorities. Fear is a powerful emotion, one that is easily used to keep the flock in line.

You said, "I have the same problem, but I have a savior who provides faith and m any days I beg for it, because my flesh is so week."
Your problem appears to be with a persistent belief in imaginary beings. Have you checked with a mental health professional lately?

The experience I have is clear, there is a saving God who sovereignty provides faith to those who seek Him. There is also a devil and demons who attack people with doubt, accusations, and fear/anger. The devil perverts everything he can, the world is under demonic attack.

I know how easy it is to go without seeking God, and to never notice a thing spiritual. Without a genuine reason to seek God, they remain hidden. Gods revelation to you was His son. And his word. If you reject this, you wont experience what I have. Either will an agnostic psychologist, who would not be worthy to judge a spiritually alive persons experience.

If you don't seek god earnestly, and receive the baptism of the Holy spirit and forgiveness of sins, you are spiritually
      Dead.

      @Austin

I get it, you are fully and completely deluded into thinking your imaginary friend and his evil twin are real.

My question for you is, do you have anything that would convince anyone who isn't already off the deep end, that they actually exist? Anything that would independently verify that your imaginary friend is anything other than imaginary? Anything at all that distinguishes your imaginary friend from the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny?

      March 8, 2013 at 11:03 am |
    • Austin

I imagined that he might there, trusted and hoped, and then experienced things that were not imaginary. I can't lie to myself about the facts of my experiences.

I have plenty of evidence which is proof . Wether you believe it or not, and you already said that you dont believe in God, so why would you believe me? Am I more powerful or demanding than God?

      March 8, 2013 at 4:36 pm |
    • Austin

      LinCA

A few poasts you were referring to evidence. You are talking to the right guy. I have had over ten, supernatural experiences. And I should not even have to explain them to you. I am not here to deceive you. I consider this labor, and I serve Him who has given me this great faith.

I can not add any spi.ces to the kettle when it comes to the recipe for faith from God. But I can honestly testify to the works of the spirit that I have experienced. When you have problems I with your alternator or battery, possible starter problem, you have to go through the experience of ruling out the possibilities. You take things into close consideration, and you start mentally recording data for evidence.

I have evidence that a supernatural spiritual ministry has been revealed to me , and that God knows my thoughts, and the future. He revealed Himself through spiritual genius , the Holy Spirit, or angels, and through His Word, also through His creation. He can provide spiritual synchronicity when you need it most. He is the risen Lord.

      March 8, 2013 at 4:57 pm |
    • LinCA

      @Austin

You said, "You are talking to the right guy. I have had over ten, supernatural experiences."
How do you distinguish these "experiences" from manifestation of mental illness? How do they prove there is a god?

You said, "And I should not even have to explain them to you."
Then don't expect me to believe they are anything other than manifestation of mental illness.

You said, "I am not here to deceive you."
I have no doubt you believe this nonsense, but just because you believe it, doesn't mean it's true.

You said, "When you have problems I with your alternator or battery, possible starter problem, you have to go through the experience of ruling out the possibilities."
Yup. The Easter Bunny as the cause of anything is one of the first to be ruled out, as there is no evidence whatsoever it exists. Same for gods.

You said, "I have evidence that a supernatural spiritual ministry has been revealed to me , and that God knows my thoughts, and the future."
As above, it is indistinguishable from a mental disorder, and there is evidence mental disorders exist. It is therefor far more likely that you suffer from (or enjoy) a mental disorder than that your imaginary friend is real.

All you seem to do is assign things you can't, or refuse to understand as actions of your imaginary friend. That's your right, but wholly unconvincing to anyone who isn't already deluded.

@BOSTONOLA: ummm correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm under the assumption that if something that was SUPERNATURAL was proven by SCIENCE then it becomes NATURAL.
seems science has done this many times before, lightning, sound, light, stars, etc etc etc
thunder once supernatural, science proved lightning caused thunder because it broke the sound barrier thus natural.

Chad's entire approach boils down to a few key elements:

He challenges any atheist out there to state categorically whether they believe in god or not. Most people will make a statement along the lines of "there is ample evidence, or rather lack of evidence, to believe in the god of israel. It is safe to say that the god of the bible exists as much as any other god or other mythical beings"

All Chad wants however is for an atheists to say "god does not exist" in order to claim that this is an affirmative statement that needs evidence and the burden is on that person to provide the evidence for that statement. Mind you Chad won't accept anything provided for two reasons. 1) Before the first response Chad has already decided there is nothing an atheist can say or show to persuade him and 2) the "evidence" that chad is asking for is like asking somebody to produce no apples. If someone holds out their hand without an apple in it, Chad somehow believes you can have some other evidence to show there is no apple.

Next, after banter back and forth Chad is challenged to provide evidence of his god. Chad will then provide a bunch of pre-writ apologetic crap that is based heavily on assumption and implication but refuses to understand that his jump from "The universe has a beginning" to "The god of the bible is the one to start the universe" is not steeped in any fact but is purely speculation.

Once many, many, many people point out this fact, chad will then start challenging people on wording which is akin to saying someone has a faulty argument because they use bad grammar.

The saddest part of this little game however is the fact that Chad is unable to, at any point, turn his relentless hounding for evidence on his own belief system, mostly due to his cogintive dissonance and his need for validation from his family, to understand that the only true statement that can be said with complete confidence on whether god exists or not is "I don't know"

It's hard to get science to read what God said, or for that matter, grow a pair big enough to admit he's right once they realize it. They have this rejection complex for anyone smarter than they are. If God won't print it in a peer reviewed journal (there are no peers for God so it's a mute point), and he won't tell them what he did personally, so they can copy it and clam they did it first, they just ignore him and say they don't know and can't say who did it.

    2. The God of Israel does not exist"

Exactly how many people c come to you and say statement 2. Instead of harping on the differenc between the 2 statments try this:

Chad: K-switch, do you belive in the God of Isreal?

K-switch: No chad, I do not.

    Chad: Well why not

      March 6, 2013 at 4:34 pm |

Exactly, K. That question may be asked (not Chad's way) of a child who has heard of several religions, a couple of which involved the God of Abraham; was never preached to; has never learned any detail about any religion, and has no belief in a particular deity. So they very well have no need and perhaps have never even though of refuting anything – they just don't believe what they've heard of so far. They would be agnostic atheists and there is no "disbelief" system involved. Atheists that have come from Christianity obviously have certain ideas that have lead them to stop believing. Maybe those areas of ideas that they discover they have in common with other atheists is what Chad is trying to label as a belief system.

  18. Doc Vestibule

Religion was born to serve the same purpose as science; it answered questions about the world and how it worked. Of course, when we required religion as a psychic salve science was unable to answer such questions; science didn't even exist except as a "hey, stop pushing me into the water or I'll get wet" practical exercise. Religion was the first symptom of our sentience, of our consciousness and of our acknowledgement of our own subjectivity.
When early man, his little brain bent upon survival at all costs, discovered that the world worked independly from how he thought it worked, (or at least how he had hoped it worked), early man was frightened and scared. That can't be! said early man to other early men. There must be some explanation, nature can't just be arbitrary!
Ugg, said other early men, and thus "God" was born–or, more appropriately, gods. Early men weren't really very good at generalization, and since everything seemed to work independently from everything else, several gods were needed to explain the "stuff" that affected early man so profoundly. But instead of "Gravityman," "LightWavesWoman," "FractalDemon," and "FunctionChild," early man, unaware of such mystical things as provability and objectivity, figured that somebody just like him, but a little smarter, must be responsible for how and why the world worked like it did. And since it was like him, it must be fickle, greedy, and childlike. Thus, mult.itheism had its glorious start.
As time went on, man began to build, man began to create, and gods began to resemble our more recent ancestors as their needs and wants changed. Christianity came along, a big beautiful "unified field theory" of a religion, and combined all of our fears and woes and hopes and dreams under one, easy-to-remember, easy-to-appease label, Jesus Christ (and his da).
Around this time, we started to discover science. We'd had mathematics for centuries before Christ, but we'd never really put two and two together ... if you'll pardon my expression. Math described the physical world that God made, and religion was comfortable with this generalization. Around this time was a golden age of reason, so I'm told, and science began to question some things about religion that religion had a vested interest in keeping to itself.
    And thus began the rift.
Now, religion is an artefact. We've managed to describe, well, almost everything, in physical terms. We've even managed to explain a great deal, too. The spirit world, we've discovered, can't exist, without something else collapsing into nothingness around us, an eventuality which has yet to manifest itself; souls, once thought to be a physical ent.ity, prove to be nothing more than hopeful thinking by people who are afraid of dying. Ephemeral "energy" is only a childlike fantasy of the Superman ilk, by people who are beginning to realize that the world isn't exactly working to their precise advantage. God, well, he and his kin have been relegated by science to the very beginning of time, the exact moment of the big bang, when all the matter in the Universe was concentrated into one minute area. Everything after that time is accounted for by physics, if only in a general way. And even then, God seems highly improbable. Science says that God is irrelevant to everything we do and everything we are; that means we have to work to make everything we do and everythig we are relevant; and that's hard.
