Producer: Claim of Obama-Satan likeness nonsense

Washington (CNN) – The third episode of the History Channel's miniseries “The Bible” was supposed to be remembered for the brutality of Babylonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar, the strength of Daniel in the lion’s den, and the birth of Jesus Christ.

But after viewers claimed there was a striking resemblance between Satan’s human form and President Barack Obama, that probably won't be the case.

Buzz on Twitter quickly grew. According to Topsy.com on Monday, there were an estimated 20,000 tweets containing the words “Obama” and “Satan” since the 9:00 p.m. ET hour on Sunday, the hour in which Satan appears in the two-hour show.

In a statement, miniseries producer Mark Burnett called claims there was a resemblance "utter nonsense."

Burnett said the actor who played Satan, Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni, "is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics - including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President."

Ouazanni has had roles in two biblical TV movies - "Jeremiah" and "The Ten Commandments."

Executive producer of the miniseries Roma Downey, Burnett's wife, added, "Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love our President, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try and discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible."

Satan appears during the miniseries’ retelling of the Temptation of Christ, when Jesus fasted for 40 days in the Judean Desert. Satan tests Jesus’ faith, asking him to make bread out of stone and jump from a cliff, but he refuses each temptation and returns to the Sea of Galilee to begin his ministry.

In the desert, Satan is draped in a long, black, hooded robe and with a slight silver tint to his face.

Both Downey and Burnett supported Obama's first campaign for president in 2008, according to Federal Election Commission reports. Downey gave $5,000 to the Obama Victory Fund and $2,700 to the Democratic National Committee in 2008. Burnett also donated to Obama's first campaign - $2,300 in 2007.

Neither gave money to Obama's 2012 campaign.

While the show was airing, tweets poured in noting the resemblance.

Not everyone on Twitter agreed, though.

After three episodes, the show has scored strong ratings. Its first episode drew 13.1 million viewers, ratings that trumped CBS’s “60 Minutes” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” The second episode drew 10.8 million viewers.

Ratings for the third installment in the five-week miniseries have not been released.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The project has been a three-and-a-half year process for The History Channel and for Burnett and Downey. Burnett - who is better known as a king of reality television, with “Survivor,” “The Voice” and “The Apprentice” all under his name - told CNN earlier this month that this project was “personal.”

“It was time for an updating, adding fresh visual life to a sacred text,” Burnett said.

Both Downey and Burnett were raised Catholic, Burnett in England and Downey in Ireland. They still regularly attend Mass in Los Angeles. Growing up, both watched the classic biblical films that the Hollywood of yesteryear churned out, like “The Ten Commandments” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told.”

To film their Bible series, the duo set off for the southern tip of Morocco with a crew of around 400 people.
CNN Belief: Reality TV Goliath takes up Bible miniseries challenge, hopes for better outcome

Burnett and Downey consulted a wide range of pastors and academics, including a major evangelical leader and a Catholic cardinal.

Their advisory panel consisted of many people from varied backgrounds familiar with sharing the stories of the Bible, rather than a who’s who of biblical academics.

Joel Osteen, a popular television preacher and pastor of the 30,000-member Lakewood church in Houston, was among those consulted. Osteen and Burnett are friends and were developing a television series together that went on the back burner during the production of this series. Osteen even took his family to Morocco during some of the filming.

While the History Channel owns the exclusive North American rights to the project, Burnett and Downey own the rights to global distribution and theatrical airings, which are in the works. The project also has a book tie-in, games and apps.

  1. Reality

    Only for the new members:

The Jesus and Satan temptation story was simply another myth concocted by Matthew (plagiarized from Buddhas' writings?) and later copied by Luke. e.g. http://www.faithfutures.org/JDB/jdb139.html

Father Edward Schillebeeckx, the famous contemporary theologian, has a different take on hell. He reasons that the Singularity does not tolerate imperfection in his spiritual realm. Therefore, any soul dying in mortal sin will simply disappear since hell the imperfect state does not exist i.e. satan does not exist.

Ah, Chad, the smug, sactimonious, pompous asshole chimes in. Ever get tired of being a snarky Christian for Jesus? And Reality has it accurate. The Bible was written using plagarized material. Lovely Mathew. Or Mark.

Lycidas, have you EVER looked up the sources Reality provides? How freaking funny that I've never seen you post any to support YOUR assertion that the Bible is remotely true. Reality has at least researched it. You have blind faith and a closed mind.

"have you EVER looked up the sources Reality provides?"

If you had paid attention Dot, you would see that my comment had to do with the Matthew and Mark comment made by Chad. Try to keep up.

"How freaking funny that I've never seen you post any to support YOUR assertion that the Bible is remotely true."

Could you please cite when I have said that the Bible is true? I am sure when you actually do you will see citation to go along with it.

"Reality has at least researched it. You have blind faith and a closed mind."

His research is filled with factless opinions and @ssumptions. Not all of it, but there is more than enough.
I doubt you can come up with one real time that I went by blind faith to say something was scientific fact. As for being closed minded...I say prove it...if you can. Good luck.

      3Q: Matt 4:2b-11 = Luke 4:2b-13

/4:2/ He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. /3/ The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." /4/ But he answered, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" /5/ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, /6/ saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" /7/ Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" /8/ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; /9/ and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." /10/ Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" /11/ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

      = Luke 4:2b-13

/4:2/ where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. /3/ The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." /4/ Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'" /5/ Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. /6/ And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. /7/ If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." /8/ Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'" /9/ Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, /10/ for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' /11/ and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" /12/ Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" /13/ When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

      vs. Mark 1: 12-13

12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

Did Matthew and Luke copy from Mark? Most scholars give Matthew credit for the original myth considering the details of the story even though most scholars believe Mark's gospel was written first. See Professor Gerd Ludemann's analyses of the three passages in his book "Jesus After 2000 Years". Regarding Mark 1: 12-13, (pp. 9-10), "The tradition is unhistorical. " See also http://www.faithfutures.org/JDB/jdb139.html

Speaking of eyewitnesses, who was eyewitness to this temptation of Jesus by Satan? Jesus was alone in the wilderness, right? Did the Gospel writers interview Satan, or something?

Chad is extremely easy to understand.

      Ask yourself 2 easy questions:
      1. If all the Christians in the U.S. were to unilaterally become non-Christian tomorrow, what would happen?
      2. If all the non-Christians in the U.S. were to unilaterally become Christian tomorrow, what would happen?

      1. Nothing would happen, peace in the U.S.
      2. The U.S. would become a theocracy within 3 days and, still not satiated, would begin forcing this religion on the rest of the world.

How do you know that the Israelis wouldn't attack their neighbors if they disarmed? There are plenty in that country who think that Israel's borders ought to expand even into Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and the Sinai Peninsula. If American history is any model of what happens when a people with vastly superior military might finds itself with lesser armed neighbors then there is no appealing to their supposed "goodness" to keep them in check.

According to OP, in the last 5 years Satan has:

      1. Passed Health Care Reform: After five presidents over a century failed to create universal health insurance, signed the Affordable Care Act (2010). It will cover 32 million uninsured Americans beginning in 2014 and mandates a suite of experimental measures to cut health care cost growth, the number one cause of America’s long-term fiscal problems.

      2. Passed the Stimulus: Signed $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 to spur economic growth amid greatest recession since the Great Depression. Weeks after stimulus went into effect, unemployment claims began to subside. Twelve months later, the private sector began producing more jobs than it was losing, and it has continued to do so for twenty-three straight months, creating a total of nearly 3.7 million new private-sector jobs.

      3. Passed Wall Street Reform: Signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010) to re-regulate the financial sector after its practices caused the Great Recession. The new law tightens capital requirements on large banks and other financial instîtutions, requires derivatives to be sold on clearinghouses and exchanges, mandates that large banks provide “living wills” to avoid chaotic bankruptcies, limits their ability to trade with customers’ money for their own profit, and creates the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (now headed by Richard Cordray) to crack down on abusive lending products and companies.

      4. Ended the War in Iraq: Ordered all U.S. military forces out of the country. Last troops left on December 18, 2011.

      5. Began Drawdown of War in Afghanistan: From a peak of 101,000 troops in June 2011, U.S. forces are now down to 91,000, with 23,000 slated to leave by the end of summer 2012. According to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, the combat mission there will be over by next year.

      6. Eliminated Osama bin laden: In 2011, ordered special forces raid of secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in which the terrorist leader was killed and a trove of al-Qaeda docüments was discovered.

      7. Turned Around U.S. Auto Industry: In 2009, injected $62 billion in federal money (on top of $13.4 billion in loans from the Bush administration) into ailing GM and Chrysler in return for equity stakes and agreements for massive restructuring. Since bottoming out in 2009, the auto industry has added more than 100,000 jobs. In 2011, the Big Three automakers all gained market share for the first time in two decades. The government expects to lose $16 billion of its investment, less if the price of the GM stock it still owns increases.

      8. Recapitalized Banks: In the midst of financial crisis, approved controversial Treasury Department plan to lure private capital into the country’s largest banks via “stress tests” of their balance sheets and a public-private fund to buy their “toxic” assets. Got banks back on their feet at essentially zero cost to the government.

      9. Repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”: Ended 1990s-era restriction and formalized new policy allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military for the first time.

      10. Toppled Moammar Gaddafi: In March 2011, joined a coalition of European and Arab governments in military action, including air power and naval blockade, against Gaddafi regime to defend Libyan civilians and support rebel troops. Gaddafi’s forty-two-year rule ended when the dictator was overthrown and killed by rebels on October 20, 2011. No American lives were lost.

      11. Told Mubarak to Go: On February 1, 2011, publicly called on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to accept reform or step down, thus weakening the dictator’s position and putting America on the right side of the Arab Spring. Mubarak ended thirty-year rule when overthrown on February 11.

      12. Reversed Bush Torture Policies: Two days after taking office, nullified Bush-era rulings that had allowed detainees in U.S. custody to undergo certain “enhanced” interrogation techniques considered inhumane under the Geneva Conventions. Also released the secret Bush legal rulings supporting the use of these techniques.

      13. Improved America’s Image Abroad: With new policies, diplomacy, and rhetoric, reversed a sharp decline in world opinion toward the U.S. (and the corresponding loss of “soft power”) during the Bush years. From 2008 to 2011, favorable opinion toward the United States rose in ten of fifteen countries surveyed by the Pew Global Attîtudes Project, with an average increase of 26 percent.

      14. Kicked Banks Out of Federal Student Loan Program, Expanded Pell Grant Spending: As part of the 2010 health care reform bill, signed measure ending the wasteful decades-old practice of subsidizing banks to provide college loans. Starting July 2010 all students began getting their federal student loans directly from the federal government. Treasury will save $67 billion over ten years, $36 billion of which will go to expanding Pell Grants to lower-income students.

      15. Created Race to the Top: With funds from stimulus, started $4.35 billion program of competîtive grants to encourage and reward states for education reform.

      16. Boosted Fuel Efficiency Standards: Released new fuel efficiency standards in 2011 that will nearly double the fuel economy for cars and trucks by 2025.

      17. Coordinated International Response to Financial Crisis: To keep world economy out of recession in 2009 and 2010, helped secure from G-20 nations more than $500 billion for the IMF to provide lines of credit and other support to emerging market countries, which kept them liquid and avoided crises with their currencies.

      18. Passed Mini Stimuli: To help families hurt by the recession and spur the economy as stimulus spending declined, signed series of measures (July 22, 2010; December 17, 2010; December 23, 2011) to extend unemployment insurance and cut payroll taxes.

      19. Began Asia “Pivot”: In 2011, reoriented American military and diplomatic priorities and focus from the Middle East and Europe to the Asian-Pacific region. Executed multipronged strategy of positively engaging China while reasserting U.S. leadership in the region by increasing American military presence and crafting new commercial, diplomatic, and military alliances with neighboring countries made uncomfortable by recent Chinese behavior.

      20. Increased Support for Veterans: With so many soldiers coming home from Iraq and Iran with serious physical and mental health problems, yet facing long waits for services, increased 2010 Department of Veterans Affairs budget by 16 percent and 2011 budget by 10 percent. Also signed new GI bill offering $78 billion in tuition assistance over a decade, and provided multiple tax credits to encourage businesses to hire veterans.

SixteenBottles, you need more examples? Sure thing, just for you buddy!

      21. Tightened Sanctions on Iran: In effort to deter Iran’s nuclear program, signed Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act (2010) to punish firms and individuals who aid Iran’s petroleum sector. In late 2011 and early 2012, coordinated with other major Western powers to impose sanctions aimed at Iran’s banks and with Jåpan, South Korea, and China to shift their oil purchases away from Iran.

      22. Created Conditions to Begin Closing Dirtiest Power Plants: New EPA restrictions on mercury and toxic pollution, issued in December 2011, likely to lead to the closing of between sixty-eight and 231 of the nation’s oldest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants. Estimated cost to utilities: at least $11 billion by 2016. Estimated health benefits: $59 billion to $140 billion. Will also significantly reduce carbon emissions and, with other regulations, comprises what’s been called Obama’s “stealth climate policy.”

      23. Passed Credit Card Reforms: Signed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act (2009), which prohibits credit card companies from raising rates without advance notification, mandates a grace period on interest rate increases, and strictly limits overdraft and other fees.

      24. Eliminated Catch-22 in Pay Equality Laws: Signed Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009, giving women who are paid less than men for the same work the right to sue their employers after they find out about the discrimination, even if that discrimination happened years ago. Under previous law, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., the statute of limitations on such suits ran out 180 days after the alleged discrimination occurred, even if the victims never knew about it.

      25. Protected Two Liberal Seats on the U.S. Supreme Court: Nominated and obtained confirmation for Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and third woman to serve, in 2009; and Elena Kagan, the fourth woman to serve, in 2010. They replaced David Souter and John Paul Stevens, respectively.

Here you go., More hard core reporting by cnn and more evidence these liberal brainwashing camps.,
aka., "Our public schools" sure have made a bang up job of it dumbing Americans down to this low level.

Oh, yeah, it's all the fault of the schools. They didn't manage to make silk purses out of your sow's ears.

No kidding. The most idiotic, poorly written posts on this blog are the ones submitted by the thumpers and right-wing-nuts.

And I guess that Christian schools and home schooling are both producing generations of free thinking, analytic intellectuals? Isn't that the great evil of liberal schools for you lot; that they lead people to actually question what they've been told to believe?

You think this wasn't done on purpose? Don't be naive. The right wing producers knew exactly what they were doing.

It's really no big deal. They've made fun of All presidents. The quicker it's forgotten, the better.

I just saw a recent picture (on the web) of Justin Beiber that looks more like the devil guy than President Obama. Oooh, should we discuss it? Idiots with nothing better to do!

Why are you here discussing it?

Hard to believe in this day and age that images of Jesus and the Devil would be so ahistorical. Jesus was a swarthy little dude with curly hair and the Devil looked like Donald Rumsfeld.

I do not care if he looks like the President in particular. It is however NOT nonsense to find it deplorable for these two producers to cast a black man as Satan in 2013. Anyone with half a brain and a little education should know that this has been done for centuries to defame the black race. Shame on them both for being too stupid to notice, know or care. And anyone defending this ignorant choice is just as simple minded. There are far too many of you.

Tell us how it would have been right for them to use a white man instead.

Hey, if you want to go down the stupid route of things...."white" people are the minority in the world. Why do you want to pick on a minority by making the devil look like them? My gosh..are you racist or something?

      March 19, 2013 at 4:32 pm |
    • Jimmy

"White" people will be the majority who get to see this series though, right? The producers obviously knew what product their audience would be willing to pay them to see.

"White" people will be the majority who get to see this series though, right?"

Possibly but you fail to connect that with the notion that they chose a dark skinned person to play Satan strictly because of skin color.

"The producers obviously knew what product their audience would be willing to pay them to see."

Yeah..stories from the Bible. Waaaay before this episode even came out the series was breaking records. Did you know that the Judge Sampson was darker skinned than Satan here? Oh my.....do you think they made a mistake in having a hero be of dark skin? Did the rating plummet when ppl saw a dark skinned hero? Nope.

The results are obvious, especially when one looks at FACTS, there is NO evidence that race had anything to do with the role of Satan going to a dark skinned man.

I'm curious if you ever saw the Passion of the Christ movie a few years ago. It was a blockbuster right? What color was Satan in that one hmmm?

I was merely indicating that "white" people would likely be the majority of people watching this series. You are right in that the choice of a black man for the heroic Samson was indicative of a lack of racist intent, if not also a lack of intent towards historical accuracy, but there has been a long history of portraying the devil as a black person, so you can understand why some people are offended by this, right?

I find it odd that the American evangelical producers would make the choice to cast a dark skinned man as Satan. I do not know if rises to the level of intent, but it surely is at the level of being utterly tone-deaf. We do have other dark skinned people in the series, Samson (though they get the story completely wrong amazingly enough), an angel or two, but the vast majority supposed "good guys" of the show are pretty much all white northern europeans. Even the actor portraying Jesus, ostensibly hispanic, has quite the golden highlights. He looks like the blond Jesus on the bible I got for graduating high school. The bad guys seem to be uniformly kohl-eyed fellows with dark skin.

All I can say is that the producers know their audience. They know that the majority is American, white, very likely teaparty, and is ignorant of the bible considering the sanitization of it.

"I find it odd that the American evangelical producers would make the choice to cast a dark skinned man as Satan"

And they used a tall white man as Christ with long straight hair, nothing of what the real Christ would have looked like in that part of the world.

      • clubschadenfreude

exactly. The history channel, or some such channel did have one bible show that had Jesus as a short semitic man with short hair and the temple locks of a Jewish man. Shows can get it right sometimes, it is obvious that "The Bible" miniseries did not wish to.
