Thousands pack St. Peter's Square for Pope Francis' inaugurationBy Hada Messia and Laura Smith-Spark, CNN Rome (CNN) - Through a square bustling with tourists, locals, pilgrims and dignitaries, Pope Francis made his way atop an open-top vehicle on Tuesday en route to a Mass that will officially inaugurate him Bishop of Rome. He wore the simple iron cross he wore as a cardinal and which he had on when he first appeared to the world as pope. When the gathered faithful at St. Peter's Square held up babies and young children for him to kiss, he obliged. He also stepped out of his sports utility vehicle to kiss the head of a man with a physical disability. Even though at least a dozen security officers in suits walked alongside the SUV as he circled the square, his decision to bypass the Popemobile, which his last two predecessors used, was telling. The Mercedes Benz G-Class SUV afforded him the kind of direct contact with people he has embraced since becoming pope. Had he been in the Popemobile, he would have been behind bulletproof glass, which was installed in 1981 after an assassination attempt on John Paul II. The ceremony - the "Mass inaugurating the Petrine Ministry of the Bishop of Rome" - will be short in keeping with the spirit of simplicity embraced by the new Holy Father, the Vatican has said, lasting about two hours. Francis has already made an impression as a pope of the people, who is concerned about the welfare of the poor. But he inherits a church wracked by a decades-old sexual abuse scandal and claims of corruption in the clergy. FULL STORY |

Einstein's Gravity Theory Passes Toughest Test Yet
Apr. 25, 2013 — A strange stellar pair nearly 7,000 light-years from Earth has provided physicists with a unique cosmic laboratory for studying the nature of gravity. The extremely strong gravity of a massive neutron star in orbit with a companion white dwarf star puts competing theories of gravity to a test more stringent than any available before

Ancient Earth Crust Stored in Deep Mantle
Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'
By Jessica Ravitz, CNN
Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.
“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Earth From Space
Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS
Program Description
"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

Peace
Christianity is not christianity. Get 2 christians to discuss the rules of their game and it won't take 15 minutes before they're throwing punches to defend the loving god of their delusion.
End religion and we have one less issue to divide us. It's a fraud. Be done with it and let's move on.
It's interesting to see so many different viewpoints and definitions as to what Christianity is, even ER's. However, I do think it's rather naive to think that if you can just get rid of religion, everything will be peaceful and harmonious. As long as each individual has free and independent thought, you're going to have some fundamental differences of various types that can end up seriously clashing with each other.
"I do think it's rather naive to think that if you can just get rid of religion, everything will be peaceful and harmonious."
ER says it right there in his/her post. End religion, and we have one less issue to fight over, not the end of all conflict.
One less issue doesn't automatically equate equate to less conflict. General human nature can always take some other issue to fill in the so called void, even a currently open issue that didn't get as much attention previously.
Only for the new members:
More waste of money and time:
To wit:
Christian economics 101:
The Baptizer drew crowds and charged for the "dunking". The historical Jesus saw a good thing and continued dunking and preaching the good word but added "healing" as an added charge to include free room and board. Sure was better than being a poor peasant but he got a bit too zealous and they nailed him to a tree. But still no greed there.
Paul picked up the money scent on the road to Damascus. He added some letters and a prophecy of the imminent second coming for a fee for salvation and "Gentilized" the good word to the "big buck" world. i.e. Paul was the first media evangelist!!! And he and the other Apostles forgot to pay their Roman taxes and the legendary actions by the Romans made them martyrs for future greed. Paul was guilty of minor greed?
Along comes Constantine. He saw the growing rich Christian community and recognized a new tax base so he set them "free". Major greed on his part!!
The Holy Roman "Empirers"/Popes/Kings/Queens/Evangelicals et al continued the money grab selling access to JC and heaven resulting in some of today's richest organizations on the globe i.e. the Christian churches (including the Mormon Church) and related aristocracies. Obvious greed!!!
An added note: As per R.B. Stewart in his introduction to the recent book, The Resurrection of Jesus, Crossan and Wright in Dialogue, ( Professors Crossan and Wright are On Faith panelists).
"Reimarus (1774-1778) posits that Jesus became sidetracked by embracing a political position, sought to force God's hand and that he died alone deserted by his disciples. What began as a call for repentance ended up as a misguided attempt to usher in the earthly political kingdom of God. After Jesus' failure and death, his disciples stole his body and declared his resurrection in order to maintain their financial security and ensure themselves some standing."
Some of Paul's money gathering activities some of which resulted in buying the Gentile entry into the then mostly Jewish version of Christianity:
Paul claimed almost total independence from the "mother church" in Jerusalem.[12] and yet was eager and diligent to bring material support from the various budding Gentile churches that he planted to the mother church at Jerusalem.
When a famine occurred in Judea, around 45–46,[24] Paul and Barnabas journeyed to Jerusalem to deliver financial support from the Antioch community.[25] According to Acts, Antioch had become an alternative center for Christians following the dispersion of the believers after the death of Stephen. It was in Antioch that the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians."[Ac. 11:26]. This act basically "greased" the entry of non-circu-mcised Gentiles into Christianity.
"Paul collected the money from his four provinces, Galatia, Macedonia, Achaia and Asia but, for obvious reasons, of propriety, had representatives take each province's own contribution".
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So, there is the fisherman Peter, who has decent livelihood and Paul's Roman citizenship and well to do family. In fact the of the apostles came from decent livelihoods, Why risk it for preaching? Just what kind of life style were they actually able to obtain so much so that not only were they willing to not only die for but give so much of their life for? Just where were the dividends that they actually receive so that they were not willing to pull out no matter what. When Paul sent fuss to famished Jerusalem, just how.much of it was.from his own purse? How much of it came from specifically the fellow Christians in Antioch as collected emergency funds for relief aid, and how does that relief aid automatically equate to the apostles being on the take?
He was also unambiguous about his calling as an apostle (2:6b) in that the instructions he gave carry “the authority of the Lord Jesus” (4:2). The message he preached to them was “the word of God”, not the word of man (2:13). Those who rejected his instructions were in effect rejecting God, not man (4:8). Even though Paul and his associates deserved financial support, he desired to share with the church not only the gospel, but their lives as well (2:9). In order not to burden the church, Paul sacrificially earned his own income while preaching the gospel so as to model a righteous and holy life (2:10). ....thessalonians
2 Thessalonians was not written by Paul but by a psuedo Paul. See for example, Professor JD Crossan's review in his book, In Search of Paul, p. 105.
So Reality, how many "experts" say that 2 Thessalonians was written by a pseudo Paul as opposed to those who say that it was written by the apostle Paul? Also, of those experts, which one's are absolutely convinced as opposed to those who think it's only likely?
The authorship of II Thessalonions is reviewed by Father/Professor Raymond Brown in his book, Introduction to the New Testament, pp. 592-596. Said book has both an Imprimatur and Nihil obstat from the RCC.
An excerpt:
"Already in the late 1700's, the traditional view that Paul wrote this letter was called into doubt."
Father Brown used 14 references in his review.
If you do not have said book, see http://www.earlychristianwritings.com under Second Thessalonians. Said reference has a large number of supporting studies to include Father Brown's book.
An excerpt:
"Second Thessalonians is widely regarded as pseudonymous. The reference in 2:2 suggests that the letter belongs to the deutero-Pauline period, and the letter may have been intended to replace 1 Thessalonians entirely. The time of composition is likely to have been in the last two decades of the first century when hopes in the imminent parousia were faltering."
So, your basing your claim on assumption that 1 Thessalonians where it talks about Paul stating about what happens to those of us who remain when Christ returns that one automatically concludes that Paul fully expected that event to happen in his lifetime, whereas 2 Thessalonians talks what has to happen before hand in order for Christ to return. Ergo, it both epistles could not have been written by the same authors. No comparisons regarding the style or of word structures; just the content, or rather the interpretation of the content; all of which is based on the assumption that when Paul states in 1 Thessalonians about those of us who remain when Christ returns, Paul had to have meant he was specifically to just the people he was addressing to at the time.
Although, that epistle was addresses specifically to the Thessalonians, there was nothing to indicate whether the meaning behind for those of us who remain meant to just the Thessalonians, or to those who are living now on earth as a whole will be there at Christ's return, or even if he actually referred to those of us remaining to mean those of us who remain of all humanity on Earth in general, which could mean that Paul didn't give any specific time frame as to when Christ will; only that his return will happen. If that be the case then 2 Thessalonians doesn't conflict at all with 1 Thessalonians, And if that's what your particular experts based it on, then it does go to show that the experts are not always correct, and if they are not always correct, then your total assurance of the experts you side with may very well be misplaced.
Expertise in the NT and associated scriptures requires a pH D in religious history and/or theology. Might want to check the credentials of the following:
(Crossan,Borg, Funk, Vermes, Pagels, Meyer, Mack, Doherty, Ehrman, Eisenman, Fredriksen, Ludemann, Macoby, Meier, Sanders, Freke and Gandy, Horsley, Johnson, Wright, Strauss, Reimarus, Holtzmann, Bultmann, Kasemann, Robinson and Schweitzer)
References previously noted should help in that regard.
I hope the new Pope has the same wisdom that one shaman has freely expressed of late:
http://warlockasylum.wordpress.com/2013/03/20/a-shamans-speech-that-can-solve-our-global-crisis-but-will-president-obama-and-other-world-leaders-use-it-in-their-work/
With all the hullabaloo surrounding the new Pope, I keep pondering the name given to Simon by Jesus: Peter (the "rock" upon which Jesus said he would build his church). If we start from the new Pope's native city of Buenos Aires and travel northeastward a few hundred miles across Uruguay – we would be in Brazil. The Portuguese word for stone is pedra, and is in the first line of lyrics of one of the most famous Brazilian songs of all time – Águas de Março (Waters of March):
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone . . . (English)
É pau é pedra
É o fim do caminho
É um resto de toco
É um pouco sozinho . . . (Portuguese)
The general, but clever theme of this classic Antonio Carlos Jobim song seems to simply be chromatic descent, as in the falling rains that are typical at the end of the Brazilian summer (March in the southern hemisphere).

sence nobody is paying any attention to the article posted I have a question for the Christians; Easter is coming up; Christians celebrate the rising of Jesus from the dead, OK, so why do you call it :Easter Sunday"? What does Easter have to do with Jesus?
Eggs.
We call it "Easter"because-wait for it-WE CAN. Peace & Love IN CHRIST!
@ Laurence Charles Ringo
??? We call it "Easter"because-wait for it-WE CAN ? What kind of answer is this?
Jesus died, was hidden, then some women went to find him. The egg represents Jesus. God is the bunny.
That is why he is always being shown as a long hare
