Condoms on campus? No thanks, we're Catholic, college says

By Pauline Kim, CNN

(CNN) - The letter is signed "cordially" but students who received the instruction to stop handing out condoms on campus say they were taken aback by demands they feel could go as far as threatening their rights.

Various dorm rooms at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, have a "Safe Site" symbol on their door. That signifies that inside are male and female condoms, personal lubricant and safer sex information, according to BC Students for Sexual Health. "If you are in need of condoms, you may knock (on) one of these doors and just ask!" the group's website says.

Lizzie Jekanowski, chair of BCSSH, told CNN that the college has always been aware of the group's activities. "We've had a positive and open relationship with the administration up to this point," she said.

But earlier this month, college administrators sent letters to students whose dorm room doors have the logo saying that distributing condoms on campus "is not in concert with the mission of Boston College as a Catholic and Jesuit university."

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

    By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

    Earth From Space

Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS

    Program Description

"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

University students are certainly smart enough to know they can walk to the nearest drug store and buy their own condoms. A catholic university is perfectly within its rights to insist that it's religious beliefs are respected by students living on its campus.

There's no news here, just an attempt to stir up outrage and conflict. Of sorry, I forgot – that is the definition of 'news' today.

    April 1, 2013 at 10:10 am |
    • Ken Margo

@Patrick............It's about convenience and students do run out of money. Just don't make the offer public. Word of mouth will do just fine. This is more about the school image than anything else. If you had to choose sides on the issue, condoms will win 80% of the time.

They are probably within their legal rights, but the story is the likelihood that this will just pile on reasons why young people will turn away from not only the churches but their educational insti'tutions. Kids are increasingly unwilling to be affiliated with backwards organizations like this.

As for whether "knowing" that they can get condoms off campus is enough, I think the stats on failure rate say it all. Condoms "fail". mostly because people don't use them due to inconvenience...especially among the young.

      April 1, 2013 at 9:10 pm |
    • Ken Margo

@Sara............................How about vasectomies paid for by either the insurance co. or the govt. The procedure could be done in a way that is reversible. That solves the convenience part. Treat it almost like an on off switch. 🙂

      April 1, 2013 at 9:18 pm |
    • Saraswati

@Ken, I don't know...Vasectomies would be great if they protected against STDs, but I'd worry vasectomies might decrease condom use while keeping se.x levels the same. State funded vasectomies for married couples would be great, though.

Hmmm...maybe state funded hormone reduction drugs for kids until they finish their schooling...

Bill Gates is quite aware of the health issues. From the recent news: "Gates will give a $100,000 grant to whoever can invent the “next generation condom” through The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges in Global Health. The estimated 80 grant recipients can then apply for a follow-up grant worth up to $1 million."

"Is it possible to develop a product without this stigma, or better, one that is felt to enhance pleasure?” the Grand Challenge prompt asks. ”If so, would such a product lead to substantial benefits for global health, both in terms of reducing the incidence of unplanned pregnancies and in prevention of infection with HIV or other STIs [se-xually transmitted infections]?”

The GOP and BC would be wise to support these kind of projects.

Men and women must either recognize their responsibilities by using the Pill or co-ndoms properly and/or use safer methods in order to reduce the epidemics of abortion and S-TDs.- Failure rate statistics provided by the Gut-tmacher Inst-itute. Unfortunately they do not give the statistics for doubling up i.e. using a combination of the Pill and a condom.

      March 31, 2013 at 9:04 am |
    • gerald

Well let's see condoms according to the center for disease control have a 16% chance of failure. FACT. Seems the safer way is abstinence as the Church calls for. Condoms have done little to stop the spread of disease because they have greatly increased the frequency of s e x. If a person has s e x 6 or 7 times with a condom by this failure rate they are almost as likely to get a disease or get pregnant as having s e x 1 time un"protected".

      Lola,

Gay marrriage is at crosspurposes with human biology.

It does not compute and its pre-cursor (gay coitus) has led to the downfall of millions through the transmission of increasingly drug resistant strains of STDs.

The pendulum is now starting to swing back.

    Prayer changes things,

    March 29, 2013 at 7:30 pm |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

      March 30, 2013 at 10:11 am |
    • Really?

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

One ethical principle says, "When an act is bad, the best intention can't justify it". The matter is far beyond the use of condoms in the first place. Whether we believe in God or not, is our own cup of tea. Considering the word, "education", we are bound to observe certain rules that make it effective and achievable. How can, in the name of anything that is holy, the use of condoms be encouraged in any learning environment? Humanity continues to complain of natural disasters befalling her. Please, permit me to say this, "Once human beings who have morality, the ability to reflect on abstracts, matters that affect them, begin to act like brute animals, obviously, their security and lives become matters of chances". I don't advocate that those at leadership positions stop passing everything into law, even laws that limit their relationships with created order and peace. It is mere nonesense for any rational being to suppurt the use of condoms, especially in schools. This has practically nothing to do with religion alone. It is a time bomb that will ultimately destroy society. Thus, the earlier right thinking individuals join choruses and say, "NO to evil", the earlier the devil will leave us in peace to enjoy longevity.

Um...because college-aged students are likely to be having sex, perhaps?
It's not like they're being given out to kindergarteners as part of their curriculum...sheesh.

"Um...because college-aged students are likely to be having se.x, perhaps?"

Lol, great answer. The stupidity of the original comment had me at a loss for words.
