Rick Warren: Son bought 'unregistered gun'

By Greg Botelho, CNN

(CNN)–High-profile Pastor Rick Warren tweeted Thursday that his son who shot himself late last week had bought an "unregistered gun" from "someone over the internet."

"I pray he seeks God's forgiveness," wrote Warren, a best-selling author and the head of Saddleback Church, referring to whoever sold his son the gun. "I forgive him."

Law enforcement authorities have the gun they believe Matthew Warren used to kill himself, according to Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Amormino said he could not say from where, or whom, the 27-year-old got the weapon. But he did confirm the gun was not registered, adding that its serial number had been scratched off.

"(The fact) the serial number is scratched off ... is going to make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to trace," Amormino said.

Matthew, the youngest of Warren's children, worked at the Saddleback Resources Warehouse, which distributes books and DVDs. He was "an important part of the church but played a quiet role," church spokeswoman Anne Krumm said.

He'd had "a fun evening" with his parents, Rick Warren wrote Saturday to the staff of his Southern California megachurch, before he committed suicide "in a momentary wave of despair."

Matthew Warren was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Mission Viejo, California, late Friday afternoon, the Orange County Coroner said. The autopsy completed Monday put the time of death at around 10 a.m. Friday.

"Matthew was an incredibly kind, gentle and compassionate young man whose sweet spirit was encouragement and comfort to many," the church said in a statement. "Unfortunately, he also suffered from mental illness resulting in deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Despite the best health care available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled, and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life."

Rick Warren is a pioneer of the megachurch movement who looked to translate traditional evangelical messages to a wider audience.

Warren founded Saddleback with his wife 33 years ago and wrote "The Purpose-Driven Life," a Christian self-help guide that became a mainstream best-seller. He also gave the invocation at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration.

There's much uncertainty in saying these things will alter or shift the atmosphere of insensitivity, disrespect, lack of compassion and love coming not only from unbelievers, but sadly, believers alike. I cannot wrap my mind around what is motivating people to celebrate another's public pain and loss. It's inconceivable to me why one would choose to, not only add to, but multiply, another's grief and moment of anguish. Regardless of his religion and worldview, he's a man who has lost his dear son. For those Christians who are so compelled to judge, I'd like to share this bible verse with you:

    Ephesians 4:29-32

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

This is not about gun control or Pastor Warren's political positions as much as it is about Jesus abandoning a lamb from his flock in his darkest hour. The devil has no power like that of Christ's love and it baffles me why he is so stingy with it. Maybe this is a warning to the Warren family for straying from the path of light to which our Lord has called them to walk? The truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ should cause us to tremble at the power and the wrath and judgment of God. The wrath of God is a raging fire of holy righteous indignation and anger at sin. Those who chose to live and speak in his name will be held accountable.

    April 15, 2013 at 4:15 pm |
    • Elizabeth

If you think Jesus abandoned Matthew as the result of the Warren family's sin, you are seriously misguided. Actually, I don't believe He abandoned Matthew at all–that would contradict His character. "Never will I leave you nor forsake you." There are consequences to sin, yes–we live in a broken world–but to think that Matthew's death was the result of his own or his family's sin warps the very idea of redemption. I, too, have struggled with depression and know very well the pits of despair Matthew probably experienced. If you've never experienced true depression, you have no idea how painful it is. People don't like to feel pain of any kind, and suicide is a means to end that pain. Matthew's choice to end his life was his decision–that's an unfortunate reality of free will. I'm not trying to justify suicide, but how God judges him and his family is not for you to decide.

In my humble opinion, this was a young man struggling with deep depression who became so overcome by the pain and
suffering that he felt that there was no other way out. It seems so strange to me that people want to make it about so many other issues and it is only about this sad soul and he was very sad at the end if anyone has been there would know.

      @If I wanted,

If suicide was always committed by adults with no dependents who had thought through the process for months I would likely agree. Unfortunately suicide is frequently committed by youth who have not grown past impulse, but people suffering a temporary depression or by people with school aged children depending on them. This is not an act that is always rational and is rarely free of consequences.

    Prayer changes things ,

    April 13, 2013 at 5:47 am |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

    • Really?

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie

      April 15, 2013 at 11:02 am |
    • Elizabeth

Okay, first of all, I go to CCU and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't support the message that prayer is a waste of time. Second, have you ever prayed before? If not, then you have no right to your claim. Prayer isn't just about asking for healing, and God doesn't always choose to answer our prayers in the way we expect Him to.

And about the study of the death of the 172 children–that study is seriously flawed. The problem lies in the number of subjects. 172 children out of how many children in the world with faith-believing parents? That's weak evidence, in my opinion. Do I think we should rely solely on prayer? No. Medical care exists for the purpose of helping people. But I'm not convinced that there is no power in prayer, not when I've seen evidence of prayers being answered.

      April 16, 2013 at 1:44 am |
    • HotAirAce

Lizzie, exactly what factual, independent, verifiable and objective evidence do you have that prayer works? mYou would be the first one with such evidence and stand to make a lot of money if you prove your thus far unfounded claims.

      April 16, 2013 at 2:00 am |
    • Elizabeth

I guess it depends on what you mean by factual. I believe The Bible is factual, and there are plenty of examples in there of prayers being answered, but if you don't believe The Bible to be factual, then I can't help you. But you know, not everything that exists can be proven with hard evidence. There would be no need for faith if that was true.

The logic of the liberal: It's not actually a suicide...It's a self inflicted gun crime. If guns didn't exist the kid would be alive today. Liberals will say that he killed himself because he was mentally unhinged because the father believes in God and guns exist. So the gun did it. Next, without any evidence...other than talk... they say its an illegal internet purchase AND someone else scratched off the numbers. It's positively brilliant. We concede to your brilliance.

    April 12, 2013 at 10:37 pm |
    • Ken Margo

Are you saying that the conservative Rick Warren is behind this? C'mon.
Typical whack job. Blame the liberals instead of sticking with facts.
We're not blaming the gun. We're blaming the lack of regulations on the gun.
Would he be alive without the gun? I don't know. Maybe he would have found a different way. But that doesn't mean we should make it easier for someone to kill themselves.

      April 12, 2013 at 10:45 pm |
    • loki

Rick Warren is not behind it directly as in an accomplice. It might have been his gun...just say'n. A case can be made. Could the father have driven him to suicide ??? Perhaps. A case can be made. Did this gun have any impact on the outcome...unlikely. Did the gun make him do it ? No. My conclusion is that this event is not evidence for gun legislation.

      April 12, 2013 at 10:54 pm |
    • loki

Addressing the question about not wanting to make it easy to commit suicide.....why do you want to make it painful ? Not my first choice...the gun...but it works fast and true.

      April 12, 2013 at 10:56 pm |
    • Akira

I haven't seen this held up in Washington at ALL as a reason to lobby for gun control. This suicide, tragic as it is, would likely have happened regardless...and lobbyists know how to pick out which deaths are most likely to help make their case.
Oh, and suicide is bipartisan. Get a clue.

Linda what would having a father like Warren have to do with him killing himself, oh I get it YOU DON'T BELEIVE IN GOD! Please explain.

Rick Warren has probably influenced so many LGBT suicides due to his bigoted preaching.
    Was his son gay?
I hope he gets a clue now, but sure is a hard way to learn.

@Magic...................That would be a cruel twist of fate if the son was gay?

      @loki.............What's your point?

If I had a screwball gay or LGBT kids I'd hope he/she/it would do the same or at least disappear far away...

      Ah! Loki is a bigot!
      That explains a few things.

Loki the bigot. Its got a ring to it. Thanks Akira. But that term is your term. My explanation for gays is that they are mentally ill pedophiles never to be trusted around children. Say hi to Elmo for me.

What about his teachings is bigotry? He is teaching from the bible.

No, it was because he had his books remove GOD and put it on people to give thier lives meaning.

Why would he blame the person who sold him the gun? That person did not make him pull the trigger. I mean the person who sold the gun doesn't need forgiveness but his son does indeed! Sometimes Christian leaders take advantage of the people. They treat their followers as if they will eat whatever food they feed.

    April 12, 2013 at 6:47 pm |
    • Ken Margo

It's the way his son was sold the gun. What did the seller think he was going to do with a gun with a erased serial number? The only conclusion you can come to is that he was going to do something bad with it.

      April 12, 2013 at 6:57 pm |
    • Ken Margo

Would you buy a car with the VIN number erased?

      April 12, 2013 at 7:02 pm |
    • jim

It has to be the fault of the guy that sold it to him. I mean if Eve ate and apple and made everyone else a sinner forever how can this not be his fault?

      April 12, 2013 at 7:07 pm |
    • Ken Margo

@Jim.............Ultimately Warren's son committed suicide. The person who sold him the gun did not kill him. The surroundings leading to warren's son obtaining the gun makes the person who sold him the gun culpable in his death. The seller knew warren's son was going to do something irrational/not legal with the weapon. Why would someone want a gun with the serial number erased?

      April 12, 2013 at 7:15 pm |
    • Saraswati

Right, 'cause when you sell a gun with a ground off serial number in a way that avoids background checks you have every reason to believe that gun is going to be used to bring about joy and happiness.

Ken Margo- have you ever heard what is position on guns is? I know what his position on murder, suicide, abortion and other methods of killing someone- or yourself.

    April 12, 2013 at 5:46 pm |
    • Ken Margo

@Paul..............Know I don't know what his position is? It must be the same position as the republicans he supports. The repubs (and some democrats) don't want reasonable gun control. You cant be both pro life and pro gun. If the killing of 20 children wont allow you make changes, then I don't want to hear any phony crooked christian crap about pro life.

Now, Ken, everyone knows that "pro-lifers" don't care one jot about people once they're born.

      April 12, 2013 at 6:30 pm |
    • Ken Margo

@.. The pro lifers need to be called out on this. I'm sure you've heard Paul Ryan's budget? The man cuts/guts every program parents/children need to survive, yet he struts around like a peac'ock saying he's pro life. The church that supports these phonies should be called out also.

      From before the suicide:

      http://www.christianpost.com/news/rick-warren-talks-about-grief-assault-weapons-lame-politicians-young-adults-in-limbo-87133/

"As far as dealing with the long-term issues related to the recent string of mass shootings, Warren argued changes are needed with regard to mental illness, assault weapons and video games.

'There's a mental health angle that you have to deal with, I don't think we're taking care of those struggling with mental illness like we need to in America. There is the civil safety issue, which is gun control and these assault weapons - they don't call them 'assault weapons' for nothing. There is the social issue ... students, by the time they're 18, they've maybe killed 10,000, 20,000 people on video games without any remorse for it. It creates a culture of violence.'"

I don't know his positions, but I wouldn't want to make too many assumptions.

@Sara................My question is based on the people he and his ilk (Conservative Christians) support. He has a lot of followers. Why didn't he use his influence to push repubs to enact sensible gun laws?

In order to keep the mentally ill from getting guns you have to put in restrictions or else those with mental illness can say the same things as everyone else. "i have a right to own a gun"

Blaming video games is a cop out. Games and movies are violent because of us. We're not violent because of games and movies.

So "Slick Rick" Warren is just a guilty as those NRA bought out congressmen.

I agree that would have been better, but I think almost everyone in the public eye plays this game. Even if we believe his motives are good (by his standards) the risk of losing support by saying something unpopular is great. I knew someone who ran as a Democrat in a state election in a rural district. In order to get anywhere near the ballot he had to choose between supporting guns or opposing abortion. He made his choice – and had he not the candidates running would both have been anti-abortion and pro gun. Those are the real choices people make.

"In order to keep the mentally ill from getting guns you have to put in restrictions or else those with mental illness can say the same things as everyone else. 'i have a right to own a gun'"

Agreed. I don't know whether we would agree on the methods, but certainly everyone has to make some sacrifices.

"Blaming video games is a cop out. Games and movies are violent because of us. We're not violent because of games and movies. "

Here we disagree to some extent. I don't think it is the only cause of violence, but we have plenty of studies indicating that modeling occurs with exposure to violence.

"So 'Slick Rick' Warren is just a guilty as those NRA bought out congressmen."

As some of them, perhaps, but I don't think from what little I've seen that he's in the worst category.

@Sara......First of all hello. Hope all is well. He's a member of clergy, not running for office. So what is the risk for him? He'll lose some, he'll gain some. That's the way it goes for all religious leaders. Tragically with the first hand knowledge of what guns can do, he'll be in an even stronger position to speak out.

"but we have plenty of studies indicating that modeling occurs with exposure to violence."

No doubt someone can be influenced. Would that apply to the bible? There's some pretty violent passages in the bible. If you start restricting/banning stuff, do we include the bible?

Is he the worst? Maybe, maybe not. But he's not the solution.

The seller ought to be more concerned about his(her) own conscience than anyone else's forgiveness. He's in a sleazy gutter business, legal or not.

    April 12, 2013 at 5:35 pm |
    • Ken Margo

If the seller had a conscience he/she wouldn't have erased the serial number.

      April 12, 2013 at 6:05 pm |
  20. Ken Margo

I wonder what is Warren's position now on guns? The serial number was scratched off because the "responsible" legal owner wanted to get rid of gun and didn't give a damn who he/she sold it to. This is why ALL guns should be registered and the serial number placed in an area where in order to scratch off the serial number, you'll have to destroy the gun. Pastor Warren can thank his "pro life" republicans he supports for stopping real gun control laws from happening.
