Vatican seeks to rebrand its relationship with scienceBy Florence Davey-Attlee, CNN (CNN) - Dropping to his knees before the 10 cardinals of the Inquisition, dressed in the white shirt of penitence, Galileo Galilei was forced to retract his "heretic" theory that the Earth moved around the Sun. Threatened with torture and interrogated for 18 days, the scientist, who was imprisoned in the 17th century, promised to never again teach the theory and spent the rest of his life under house arrest in his small farmhouse outside of Florence. Galileo's fate was very different from that of other scientists at the time of the Inquisition. Some were executed for threatening the church's teachings. Italian astronomer Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher who argued that the universe was infinite, was burned at the stake. Now in 2013, as Pope Francis settles into his new role as leader of the Catholic Church, the Vatican's head of science is urging a re-think of the "mischaracterization" of the relationship between the church and science. The Vatican would like the world to see how much this relationship has changed. FULL STORY |

Apr. 25, 2013 — A strange stellar pair nearly 7,000 light-years from Earth has provided physicists with a unique cosmic laboratory for studying the nature of gravity. The extremely strong gravity of a massive neutron star in orbit with a companion white dwarf star puts competing theories of gravity to a test more stringent than any available before

Horn and Putnam ought to be ashamed. They are trying to profit off of unwarranted anti-Catholic paranoia. As J. D. Leavitt has already made clear ("Heretically Orthodox," 2013), the Vatican has publicly addressed the issue of the possibility of extraterrestrials in recent years. Their statement on the matter remains that their existence would not be theologically threatening, that they might not necessarily have a fallen nature in need of salvation, and that any with a fallen nature would be able to find salvation in Jesus Christ.

Has anyone here read "EXO-VATICANA"?? I just started reading it and my biggest question is WHY is the Vatican soooo interested in outer space and ET's? The Vatican has two observatories; one in Rome near the Vatican and one in Tucson, AZ (one telescope is called Lucifer). What's even stranger is that the Franciscans run it, way before this pope became Francis.
I love stuff like that, alien conspiracies and all. The more you read the more there is.

Source listed above is better than the bible's
The vatican observatory started out as the vaticans way of trying to control the spin on any scientific discoveries. To this day much of what they come up with is tainted by the god bias, and really aren't considered authorities in any sciences.
Ya and on the interview with Sid Roth, Tom Horn, author of exo vaticana uses the Malachi Prophecy and then further testifies the He (or his sister) was abducted. So can you believe anything the guy says now? you would have to believe in ufo's.
Exovaticana is about the catholic church, the final false prophet pope disclosing that Aliens are superior and are arriving. This is an antichrist movement according to Horn.
If he is lying about being abducted he is a false prophet from 2 Peter seeking money.
all the secret infomation from Horn borderlines the a definition of a cult, "revolving around information not readily available to the mainstream.
Austin
There are thousands of people who sincerely believe in UFO's. Many others who are convinced that Bigfoot is real. Uncounted others who believe every manner of conspiracy theory. All without any credible evidence to support their claims
Very few are purposely telling lies. They are simply incorrect in their assumptions about their experiences. So you tell us about your dream experiences and wonder why we don't accept what you claim? When people experience things that they can't easily explain they fill in the blanks with their imagination and in the case of religious people with divine revelation. If you so easily dismiss the UFO nuts then don't be surprised that we dismiss the kinds of claims made by people like you.
I dismissed and hated the resurrection, and for some reason God has given me faith. A great faith. God is a supernatural power he transcends a physical body. His power is awesome and awful.
I have not dismissed the UFO thing. I am only warning yall, Tom Horn is selling books and raking in the dough. I personally read his book "Apoloyon rising." that book really did it for me when it comes to the Mason's. But this is different subject matter than to claim a walk in by a demonic alien and then to say you have information about the fulfillment of major prophecy and to be selling books about it. that thought makes me want to vomit.. Horn went to books about 2012 to this Malachi thing with a book, the two both talking about the aliens which is a sequel to his version of "watchers" from Genesis 6 and the book of Enoch.
IDK I am very susp.icious but if the vatican starts talking about UFO's then I guess Horn is right. and if they mislead the public on submission and following aliens then we will know that that particular denominations adherence to old earth science is crap too.
atheist steve, I genuinely want to plead to you to think about the sequence of events that took place with my dreams and reflect on who God is.
I was dreaming about scripture that i had no recollection of , before I read it, THE night before I read it i wold dream about point blank details. Then I judged a group of guys I was mad at. I thought to myself "i wonder if they have the light in their eyes", and the next morning, on of the kids came up and said "i dreamed last night that people were possessed and the only way to find out was to go around and look to see if there was a "light in their eye"
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
This kid was not a student of the bible. I had been studying these verses. this was a spiritual transmission.
Then, I had written down a dream at night about a house i toured with an above ground pool with a privacy fence around it. two days later, this kid pulled out a blue print he drew of a house, with an above ground pool with a privacy fence around it.
Dont you understand?
Austin,
Your god is just one more bigfoot or Loch Ness monster. No evidence for it but way to many people who believe in it. You are no different than those people who believe that they were abducted by aliens. You have no explanation for what you believe so you make up a reason.
Just to let you know, quoting from your big book of multiple choice has NO authority at all. NONE.
You don't dismiss the UFO thing? Then you believe we have been visited by aliens? If not now then some time in the past?
Let me clear this up for you.
We have not been visited by aliens from another planet. The distances are too vast and the occurrence of life supporting planets too dispersed. We've been searching using SETI for signals to no avail and our own radio signature has barely reached the nearest stars to our own, approx. 60 light years out, so nobody out there has listened to us.
Don't get me wrong. The universe is vast in the extreme. Wherever life can be supported it probably has emerged. Some tiny percentage of these might have developed intelligent life. Perhaps millions of them scattered among the billions of galaxies.
It took us over 4 billion years to get off our own planet and only to reach our pitifully close moon. If alien life has left its own planet to explore they would likely head inward toward the galactic center where the density of stars and planets offers more opportunity for discovery. Not out here in the sparsely populated galactic arm.
Face it. So far we are and have always been alone.
Austin
All I'm sure of is that you've convinced yourself that your dreams and experiences have meaning to you. All I see are instances of deja vu.
The mind is incredibly complex and our sub conscience can make us create links where none exist. You claim seeing a Bible verse before reading it but can you be certain you didn't encounter some time earlier in your life? Memory is extremely fickle and unreliable.
All I can say for certain is that I have never experienced anything that I could classify as supernatural. Never seen a ghost, never heard disembodied voices, never observed an event that couldn't be explained by natural means. I'm 50 years old and nothing "miraculous" has ever happened to or around me and that includes when I was a believing Catholic.
Your subjective experience may have convinced you but until something similar happens to me I remain unconvinced.
Not only that Austin. If something happened to me that I could not explain I still wouldn't jump to a conclusion that it was supernatural. I would first consider that there is a natural explanation that I haven't encountered yet. Then I would do research to find that explanation. If I still couldn't find a natural cause then I would file it away as something unknown. Jumping to the "god did it" answer is just a way to stop looking for a rational explanation and fails utterly at giving any real answers.
Austin
HBO has a new season of Brain Games. It's a TV show that demonstrates just how unreliable our perceptions are. Our brain can fool us into seeing and hearing things that are not there. We can also be fooled into completely missing things that are blatantly obvious. I highly recommend this program for anyone who wants to learn more about our brain and how little we can trust what we think we perceive.
Oops...not HBO...it's a National Geographic production.
AtheistSteve,
Absolutely right. This is a clear case of confirmation bias. Human brains evolved to find patterns in the world. It is a very simple, and very well docu mented, survival tool.
Love Brain Games. Awesome show!

I can't care less about what the Freak Pope has to say or does! Only Catholics, Idolaters, Papists, Romanists et al care about that.
THE CHURCH WILL DO EVERYTHING IT CAN TO CONTINUE FOOLING THE BRAINWASHED ,DELUSIONAL MASSES OF PEOPLE.ONE DAY THEY WILL RUN OUT OF THEIR ABILITY TO CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT IMAGINARY GODS,BIG FISH,DEVILS EXIST.. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
The peers of Galileo were like scientists today – they had their minds made up and closed. They refused to look through Galileo's telescope because they already "knew" what they would see. On the other hand:
From Wikipedia – The Jesuits have made numerous significant contributions to the development of science. The Jesuits have dedicated significant study to earthquakes, and seismology has been described as "the Jesuit science." The Jesuits have been described as "the single most important contributor to experimental physics in the seventeenth century.
The Big Bang was first proposed by Georges Lemaitre, a Belgian catholic priest. Lemaitre convinced Albert Einstein that the universe was not static.
Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian catholic monk who became the founder of modern genetic science.
There are many other examples, but atheists view scientists as prophets and genuflect before them. They ignore such history because its safer with one's head in the sand.
You are just plain wrong. Scientists recognize the valuable contribution of religious people. Muslims were particularly important contributors to science and development of the scientific method.
A particular scientist may be biased. History has proven that scientists as a group are skeptical and will question other scientists' findings to flush out errors over time. That's why science is the single most successful human endeavor. Do you think we could send robots out of our solar system, develop nuclear magnetic resonance machines, gigabit Internet, etc if science was founded on quicksand?
It is religion that is mired in unquestionable dogma. As long as there is dogma, religion will continue to become more and more marginalized. Get real dude.
@Bostontola You've forgotten something: human nature. After two hundred years of scientific discovery and technological acheivement, the twentieth century was supposed to be the Great Age of Reason with religion shoved aside. Instead, science gave us the meat grinder of WW1, the atom and hydrogen bombs, the cold war, Chernobyl and Fukoshima. From 1932 until 1972, secular scientists funded by secular a secular government conducted the unconscionable Tuskeegee Syphillis Experiments. And you surely know about Hitler and his Social Darwinism which produced the Holocaust.
Science is not going to save us by itself. You have to ask, "In whose hands will it save us?"
There are plenty of incredibly smart people who believe in a god. Catholic scientists have contributed to our understanding of how the world works....but....they didn't use religion to prove anything....and.....they did not prove any of their religios beliefs as being true. Their religious beliefs were beside the point. If I accepted your arguement I would be justified in believing in alchemy because Isaac Newton did.
I didn't forget about human nature. As I said, while some scientists could be biased or worse, others will check them. Many scientists protested nuclear weapons as an example. I don't think you want to appeal to the immorality of scientists when the Catholic Church is mired in a pedophilia scandal of immense proportions. Not only did leaders of the church violate the most vulnerable of their flock that trusted them, they then didn't have enough honor to admit it and correct it, they covered it up and even moved criminals to new areas where the abuse continued. Ouch.
"There are many other examples, but atheists view scientists as prophets and genuflect before them."
Lol. No, no they don't. Genuflecting is a Catholic thing, anyway...and your broad use of "Atheists believe..." blah blah is just as erroneous as someone saying "Catholics believe pedophilia is a-ok."
See how easy it is to make sweeping generalizations based on the conduct of a few?
Hey CE are you as smart as 5th grader ? ....................also the RCC ?

Yep, he makes a lot of "truth" claims all right....not that he can demonstrate them...he is another apologist that makes the arguement "If you can't prove me wrong, I am justified in my belief". I don't find his point compelling.
the rcc wants to be pals with science. lol
the rcc should be destroyed, the vatican razed, its adherents scattered, and the entirety of its clergy burned on great pyres of the roman catholic canon.
seriously.
science vs religion:
over 500 years of science using evidence to dispel the areas of human ignorance once occupied by religious idiocy... never once – ever – uncovering any supernatural means to ANYTHING.
not one supernatural claim ever supported. every testable supernatural claim firmly debunked.
religion always bends to science – never the other way around.
through history – never once has science bent to religion – never once – ever.
religion has always been bent, bashed, broken, bludgeoned, and beaten by science.
never any exceptions – ever.
the answers of the great questions of life will never come from any religion.
only the truly ignorant fail to understand – monotheistic religions are the true force of darkness in this world..
and science is our only illumination.
"not one supernatural claim ever supported. every testable supernatural claim firmly debunked". Some things are so obvious they can't be noticed. Here's what you should have noticed. All scientific discovery comes from observing the Natural universe, using Natural instruments which enhance our Natural five senses. Such things would be useless when applied to anything SUPERnatural. A scientific proof of God would be worthless. It's doubtful you would even recognize evidence for God's existence.
If all we have is our five senses to take in information and therefore cannot detect the supernatural..... man is not justified in claiming supernatural causes for anything. Yet religion claims knowledge you admit it can't have....your arguement contradicts itself.
Dr. Greg Graffin's PHD thesis was a study of the att/itudes of the world's leading evolutionary biologists regarding religion.
"Well, if you ask the leading evolutionary biologists in the world the following question, 'Is evolution at war with religion?,' according to my study you will find that only 10% of them believe that religion and evolution are incompatible. This means that the majority, in fact 87% of the participants in my study, 87% of them find some way to make religion compatible with the tenets of evolution. And my study was based on a questionnaire that was sent out to 22 different countries, to members of national academies of science who expressed research interests in evolutionary biology. And most of them believe that religion is an adaptation, in other words, religion is a part of evolution, not religion is something given to us from God, but rather, religion was manufactured by humankind."
" I would say that the naturalist worldview expressed by these evolutionary biologists is not very kind to traditional theology, because it sees theology as subordinate to evolutionary biology. You cannot understand religion unless you see it as an adaptation, and of course to understand adaptation, you have to be firmly grounded in evolutionary biology. So in a sense, theology takes a back seat to evolutionary biology. Hence, one of my conclusions of the study, and that is that the world's leading evolutionary biologists find no conflict between evolution and religion on one condition, and that condition is simply that what they call religion is a severely debased form of traditional theology that is fundamentally atheistic in tone. My study reveals that the worldview of these scientists is so different from traditional theology in that no gods exist for them, there is no such thing as the incorporeal spirit or soul, there is no life after death — all of the things that are held most passionately by traditional theology, all of them have to be abandoned. And if that condition is met, then religion is perfectly harmonious with the tenets of evolution. The only way to find compatibility in such a worldview is by accepting a religion with no authority on the most meaningful matters of human existence. For that, we have sociobiology, or evolutionary biology, and that, to me, is offensive to most theologically-minded people."
Anyone who believes this religious garbage is disconnected from reality. We need to move away from these ancient myths and embrace science so that the human race can finally advance.
Without religion we would probably have colonized other star systems by now.
ancient myths? Before man asked "what" he was he asked "who" he was. Early man used myth to explain himself to himself. Myth was the first attempt at science. Darwin arrived. Darwin explained that we are not a "who" but a "what" – a mere organism. Evolution has apparently produced a freak – humans. Blind, dumb nature developed a creature which looks for meaning when there is none; it thinks it has destiny when it has none.
I am an atheist, but your assertion and conclusion are unscientific and contrary to the evidence. Mankind's advancement has been at a dizzying pace with religion.
Catholic Engineer,
I will change my mind and agree a god planned all this when you present some sort of verifiable demonstrable evidence instead of the "well it makes me feel better if there is a god" arguement.
@ Blessed are the Cheesemakers
I didn't express or imply the argument you suggest. You have made an erroneous assumption. Erroneous assumptions are dangerous to science.
Catholic Engineer,
You absolutely implied the arguement when you stated...
"Evolution has apparently produced a freak – humans. Blind, dumb nature developed a creature which looks for meaning when there is none; it thinks it has destiny when it has none."

What Francis can do the rectify the science-Christianity divide? Change the Apostles' Creed to the following:
Only for the new members of this blog:
The Apostles'/Agnostics’ Creed 2013: (updated by yours truly and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years)
Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??
I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)
Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,
He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
Jerusalem.
Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.
Amen

Of course by adopting the updated Creed, Francis the First would make his papacy the last which is a good thing for all concerned.
Dropping to his knees in front of ten men. I would bet this is not the first time for him well maybe with clothes on.
Prayer changes things,
Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.
An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.
The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!
"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"
That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie!
lol...as long as they ignore modern psychological research on hom'os'exuality and se'x and modern public health research on condom use and AIDS no one is going to take this kind of BS seriously.
I get a giggle out of the implicit "Oooops! Not quite so infallible" aspect of it.
What is funny is that the Church thinks defining its dogma as to minimally conflict with scientific knowledge so that it is not falsifiable somehow confirms their BS. They just shoehorn it to fit and then want a "pat one the back".
@Cheese, yeah, it's kind of a sad/funny mix.
Exactly, Saraswati.
They're trying to "re-brand".
I think it'd be rather amusing, except for all the damage they cause.
Well they better hurry up ?

Atheist Prof. Peter Higgs: Stop calling Higgs boson the ‘God particle’

The Ethics of Resurrecting Extinct Species.................... and we know condoms work .
Apr. 8, 2013 — At some point, scientists may be able to bring back extinct animals, and perhaps early humans, raising questions of ethics and environmental disruption.
"Bringing back a hominid raises the question, 'Is it a person?' If we bring back a mammoth or pigeon, there's a very good existing ethical and legal framework for how to treat research animals. We don't have very good ethical considerations of creating and keeping a person in a lab," said Sherkow. "That's a far cry from the type of de-extinction programs going on now, but it highlights the slippery slope problem that ethicists are famous for considering."

lol, the Vatican knows damn well current religion is used to control and blind. Originally spirituality was law, a mixture of theology/ metaphysics/ math/ science, only later was it broken up. Just read some of the Gitas, the match, and theology is there. It even treads into quantum physics.

Einstein's Gravity Theory Passes Toughest Test Yet

Ancient Earth Crust Stored in Deep Mantle
Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'
By Jessica Ravitz, CNN
Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.
“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Earth From Space
Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS
Program Description
"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.
