Battle of the sexes at Western Wall

By Sara Sidner, CNN

Jerusalem (CNN) - A group of women in Israel is again expressing outrage after police detained some of its members for doing two things they say should be perfectly normal and legal: praying out loud and wearing a prayer shawl at the holiest site for prayer in Judaism.

The women who were detained on Thursday are part of a group that calls itself Women of the Wall. For more than two decades, its members have been defying traditionalists and the Israeli government.

The women say they should be able to pray as they wish at the Western Wall and be given the same rights as the men who pray there. The idea - and trying to make it true by just doing it - has outraged some of the ultra-Orthodox who pray at the wall, where a partition separates men and women.

As custom has it, only Jewish men can wear a tallit (prayer shawl) and recite the kaddish (the mourner’s prayer) at the wall. Israeli courts have essentially agreed, letting custom dictate the rules there.

One of the ultra-Orthodox men who was at the wall when the women wearing prayer shawls showed up said he thought they were being disrespectful and just trying to stir up trouble. He didn’t want to give us his name.

The women say their critics couldn’t be more wrong about their motives.

This is the second time this year members of Women of the Wall have been detained for going against custom. In February, police detained 10 women and made news around the world because two of them were close relatives of comedian Sarah Silverman. Silverman’s sister Susan, who is a reform rabbi, and Silverman's niece were hauled into police custody for wearing the shawls.

At the time, Silverman used her wry and often raunchy humor to support her sister:

"So proud of my amazing sister and niece for their balls out civil disobedience. Ur the tits!" Silverman tweeted. Then she sent a more PC statement through her publicist:

"I don't care much for people who use religion as a cloak to justify hatred, injustice and fear. And I can't imagine God, should he or she or it exist, does either. I am so proud of my sister and niece for fighting for what they believe in - by having the nerve to pray at a wall of prayer while being female."

Israeli police say they are simply following orders passed down from an Israeli court and detaining the women for "performing a religious act contrary to the local customs."

In 2003, the Israeli High Court gave the women permission to pray as they wish on the premises but not at the Western Wall itself.

The issue trended on social media sites, and there has a big reaction from Jews abroad - especially those in the United States - when the detentions first made the news in February.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly taken notice of the controversy and asked the chairman of the Jewish Agency, Natan Sharansky, to look into finding solutions to alleviate tensions building at the Western Wall over the issue.

Anat Hoffman, who heads Women of the Wall and was a longtime Jerusalem city councilwoman, hopes to see a change in policy soon. Over the past two years, she said, 45 women have been detained and one woman, Hoffman herself, has been arrested in the fight over how they want to pray at the wall.

After being detained in February, Hoffman said:

"There are lots of forbidden acts at the Western Wall: Do not spit on the wall, do not pee on the wall, no slaughtering of animals at the wall - and among those, one cannot perform a religious act contrary to local customs at the wall, which pretty much only applies to women, because there are no local customs men are forbidden from taking part in."

There is no law that prohibits women from wearing both Tefillin and Prayer Shawls. In fact, the daughters of famous Rabbis (unfortunately their names escape me at the moment) used to don Tefillin and Prayer Shawls as well and were supported. As long they are doing this to honor God, there should be no reason they should not. The women should also be granted their own space at the wall. It is a holy place to all, not just the men.

This is like rosary beads. God is extremely intelligent, witty, creative, and I can't imagine him being happy to listen to the same prayer 100 times in a row. I would have to ask what Moses wore, or Abraham, or Issac, or Jacob, Isaiah, Mary, Elizabeth... what were they wearing and where were they when they talked with God? What was their secret formula? I don't think they had rosary beads then, or all the other stuff. I don't have thos things, I doubt he cares if I have them. What he cares about, is that I care about him, not those things. IMO.

These women took their case to court and a compromise was found. However, they are breaking the law by rejecting the compromise and are detained rather than arrested because of the sensitivity of the issue. Many of the women involved have rarely stepped in a synagogue and don't believe in prayer but have joined the protest for feminist reasons rather than any interest in religious worship. You are unlikely to find any of them protesting accepted customs in Churches, Mosques, Temples or any other religious sites elsewhere in the world.

Verses regarding Mary in Quran (Islamic Scripture)

“Mention in the scripture Mary. She isolated herself from her family, into an eastern location.” [19:16]

“While a barrier separated her from them, we sent to her our Spirit. He went to her in the form of a human being.”

She said, "I seek refuge in the Most Gracious, that you may be righteous."

He said, "I am the messenger of your Lord, to grant you a pure son."

She said, "How can I have a son, when no man has touched me; I have never been unchaste."

He said, "Thus said your Lord, `It is easy for Me. We will render him a sign for the people, and mercy from us. This is a predestined matter.' "

When she bore him, she isolated herself to a faraway place.

The birth process came to her by the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "(I am so ashamed;) I wish I were dead before this happened, and completely forgotten."

(The infant) called her from beneath her, saying, "Do not grieve. Your Lord has provided you with a stream.

"If you shake the trunk of this palm tree, it will drop ripe dates for you.*

"Eat and drink, and be happy. When you see anyone, say, `I have made a vow of silence, [to the Most Gracious]*; I am not talking today to anyone.' "

She came to her family, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have committed something that is totally unexpected.

"O descendant of Aaron, your father was not a bad man, nor was your mother unchaste."

She pointed to him. They said, "How can we talk with an infant in the crib?"

(The infant spoke and) said, "I am a servant of God. He has given me the scripture, and has appointed me a prophet.

"He made me blessed wherever I go, and enjoined me to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat) for as long as I live.

"I am to honor my mother; He did not make me a disobedient rebel.

"And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I get resurrected."

“That was Jesus, the son of Mary, and this is the truth of this matter, about which they continue to doubt.”

“It does not befit God that He begets a son, be He glorified. To have anything done, He simply says to it, "Be," and it is.”

All religions try to subjugate women, in 1 way or another & it needs to stop! The books we call Holy, by the worlds religions, were written several Thousands of years ago, but y'all still want to treat us as was the custom then!? You must be kidding!! Ain't gon' happen! We have never been lesser, weak, hysterical, emotional, not rational etc! We have been a partner to mens endeavors & w/other women, throughout history! Perhaps the only universal truth is that generalizations always fail to cover everything. There are religions that treat men and women as equal such as Wicca and Unitarian Universalists.

What's stupid is that you think praying at the wall is a tenet rather than a tradition. You think that the Orthodox Jews in America do that on a daily basis?

The joke is that the orthodox Jews are not even praying before the real Wall! That was build by Arabs in the Umayyad Caliphate or by Ottoman Turks. The real wall built by Jews under Herod the Great is at Robinson's arch or 50 feet below the "orthodox" Wall. We know this because the real Wall featured Herod's distinctive giant blocks that were always finely beveled.

Which makes the point – religion is never really about the truth. It's about what you want to believe.
And then you keep piling on....

No Jew should be worshipping towards a wall. Jews pray to God in the direction of the most holy place in Judaism, the site of which has been built over and is occupied by the Dome of the Rock.

    • Thinker23

Alan Brody: "... We know this because the real Wall featured Herod's distinctive giant blocks..." - I would recommend you to look closer at the pictures of the Western Wall. You will be amazed to discover that the two lowest rows of the wall (which are higher than the people praying next to it) ACTUALLY ARE Herod's distinctive giant blocks.

Miriam: "No Jew should be worshipping towards a wall. Jews pray to God in the direction of the most holy place in Judaism, the site of which has been built over and is occupied by the Dome of the Rock." - Considering that the Dome of the Rock is almost directly behind the Western Wall a person standing next to the Wall and willing to pray in the direction of the Holy of Holies will indeed have to face the Wall.

This is a fiction perpetuated over the centuries to deprive Jews of their historic claim to Jerusalem. Except for the upper most courses, the wall on the west AND south sides is the wall that existed when the Romans siezed Jerusalem. The provenience of the eastern wall is less certain.

The poster I've replied to declared that discrimination of women was characteristic to Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). The fact, however, is that non-Abrahamic religions have the very same flaw. Similarly, one can say that crime is characteristic of Blacks despite the fact that non-Blacks (White, Asians, etc.) have their fair share of criminals.

Gee John, thanks so much for letting us lady folk know "He" can hear us as long as we pray to your manly God. Spirituality is supposed to bring us together, but every organized religion on earth that is not openly mocked by the majority of people on earth has women can't do this and women shouldn't do that hardwired into the dogma and spelled out in sacred text. From the words we speak to get through the day and the colorful messages we use to insult one another every female of every age on this planet is fed a constant stream of reminders we are simply lesser creatures than males. To really drive the point home we also punish and degrade any boys or men unfortunate enough to display a stereotypically feminine behavior.
Sure tomboys are cute, but a sissy boy that's just wrong wrong wrong because all things female are wrong in one way or another.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price [is] far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise [is] good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household [are] clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing [is] silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth [it]; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour [are] her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue [is] the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband [also], and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour [is] deceitful, and beauty [is] vain: [but] a woman [that] feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Don't forget the free offer: get free forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the only begotten son of God. Limit one per customer, offer ends soon... hurry. See your prophets, or the New Testement for details.

      Dear Mr. Pickle
Your point about what God wants in a virtuous woman was written by a Jewish man.
If you actually read the content of Proverbs 31, the definition of a virtuous woman by a jewish man,
      is a baby-making slave.

    • Pickle

By design, a woman can "make" babies, yes. Is that bad? For some reason everyone is praising her though. Why do you think that is?

I'm all for seeing women achieve equality in all aspects of life throughout the world. I only wonder why some women feel imitating male behavior somehow makes them equal? In this case its prayer shawls, in other cases its silly things like removing "-ess" from words like waitress, actress, et cetera, or more serious things like violent behavior (women are fastest growing population in US prisons).

      I see a closet misogynist.
Perhaps the concept of "equality" escapes you.

      Grow up.

So, women can achieve equality as long as they don't intrude on your prerogatives? Diminutive suffices ("ess") are intended to cast women in a secondary class. Rejection of class-based terminology would seem to be necessary to transcend the historical caste system.

This sort of misogyny is a staple of the Abrahamic religions. It's the root cause of too many crimes against women to be listed. Even if there were evidence for the existence of this god, there is no way I could worship such a being.

    • Thinker23

Are you sure that in NON- Abrahamic religions (Buddhism, for example) men and women are absolutely equal? I do not recall seeing female Buddhist monks with shaved heads wearing orange robes. Am I missing something?

I know that many religions discriminate against women. I am simply addressing the Abrahamic religions, as they are the primary focus of this blog.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie!

i agree with you. alot of religions think about women the same way. i guess we as women are not worthy of prayer at the wall. just what is so great about the wall that women can not pray there. i'm sorry, but this thing about eve bringing in sin is b.s. if adam–a man was so smart. why did he eat from the fruit of the tree? but, then again i do not believe that story anyway. i love our creator but, i hate it when men think they have it over us. ugh drives me crazy.

    • Thinker23

diana horton... I agree that "this thing" in your post "is b.s". You see, women ARE allowed to pray at their section of the Wailing Wall. There are two sections there, one for men and one for women.

      @Thinker:
Then what is the problem? Why are the women being arrested?
      For wearing the shawl?
      Is that it?
Or are they deliberately going onto the men's side?
The article, and the one I read here previously on Sara Silverman's sister, made it seem that was the problem...the shawl.
You seem to know about this subject; is that the problem?

Akira: "The article, and the one I read here previously on Sara Silverman's sister, made it seem that was the problem...the shawl.
You seem to know about this subject; is that the problem?" - Yes it is. A shawl is a part of men's clothes. According to most traditional religions men and women are not supposed to wear each other's clothes. Just as a bunch of nudists would insult feelings of Catholics praying at the Peter's Cathedral in Vatican a bunch of women wearing shawls insults feelings of religious Jews praying at the Western Wall.

by far, jews have the dorkiest clothes, accents, hats and mannerisms of all mainstream religions, but they don't stop there. They are even more bizarre then south american tribal people. entertaining though.

Does God hear prayers that aren't mediated by the mediator? If you are rejecting the messiah for your own personal religion or tradition, does God hear your prayer?

      Austin: "rejecting messiah"

The Jews are waiting for their Messiah for many centuries. According to Judaism the Messiah will come and PROVE that he is indeed the Messiah. Obviously, Jesus was either unable or unwilling to convince the Jews that he was the Messiah.

  20. John

For all the women out there praying to God, he can hear you. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, can hear you. Any other god, is a waste of time to pray to. You do not have to pray at a wall, or wear certain clothing. You can talk to him as you would a person near you. He knows your birth to death, he knows all about you. God exists. God also sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth to die for the sins of those that would believe him. See your prophets for details.
