Opinion: Don't scapegoat a faith for bombings

Editor's note: Farhana Khera is the president and executive director of Muslim Advocates, a national legal advocacy organization dedicated to promoting freedom, justice and equality for all, regardless of faith.

By Farhana Khera, Special to CNN

(CNN) - Like so many Americans across the country, I was shocked when I heard of the attacks at the Boston Marathon. A part of me immediately traveled back to when I was cheering runners myself as a student at Wellesley College, the midpoint for the marathon, a time when such dangers as bombings never crossed our minds.

Boston is an indelible part in the personal history and identity of those who have lived or attended school in the city. That someone had detonated bombs at an event that symbolized unity in a place known for its rich diversity and as a birthplace of our nation's freedom was heartbreaking.

    Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 256:

    Narrated As-Sab bin Jaththama:

The Prophet passed by me at a place called Al-Abwa or Waddan, and was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, "They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans)." I also heard the Prophet saying, "The inst.itution of Hima is invalid except for Allah and His Apostle."

The above clearly states that it's ok for Muslims to kill innocent non Muslim women and children.

Muslims aren't violent and gladly say so. White Americans don't believe them. A selfish heathen who is nothing but a crook but claiming to be Muslim commits a horrible crime and white America believes his phony and hypocritical "beliefs." You believe millions of knuckleheads but not billions of normal peaceful civilians. Of course you do. Pathetic.

The history of both christianity and islam proves that neither are peaceful.

For the record I would not lump evil or evil doers with islam.
I would however lump them with and and all believers and religioius systems, because they themselves define evil. How can I NOT lump them in with the very thing that they define?

Rocket, For the record, Christians have killed a lot more Muslims than the reverse, Jews have killed a lot more Muslims than the reverse as well. What does that say about "the love of Jesus Christ in their hearts"?

    April 22, 2013 at 9:44 am |
    • Carl

Nonsense. You are twisting cause and effect and simply counting raw numbers. Muslims attack Christian and Jewish civilians from within populated areas and take cover behind their own women and children. The fact that more muslims then die when targeting combatants is a function of their own warped tactics and the vastly superior military skills of Israel and the U.S. Neither the U.S. nor Israel intentionally targets civilians – both go to great extremes to avoid them.

      April 22, 2013 at 10:05 am |
    • Johnny Quest

You sound much more like a Hadji then Johnny Quest. As for who kills the most, well I believe that would be muslims killing muslims. Keep up the good work.

      April 22, 2013 at 10:22 am |
    • JohnQuest

Carl, my argument is death for death Christians have always been on top of the body count from the Crusades to the Iraq, You haven't disputed that fact. Secondly, who is the victim in the Palestine \ Israel, I agree the Palestinian tactics are horrible but they are fighting an overwhelming modern force with rocks and sticks essentially.

With that said I think Murder is wrong no matter who does it, may it be the U.S or any other government, to say that one side is right simply because you agree with it, is biased at best.

  6. Enoch

When Muslims move to a Christian country, there are two things to consider: If they remain Muslims and continue living the barabaric muslim way of life they are dangerous and worthless. If they attempt to change their life-style and discover a spiritual life, they have to abandon Islam and become followers of Jesus.

Where is this "Christian country" you speak of ?

      April 22, 2013 at 9:38 am |
    • JohnQuest

Enoch, you do know that Christianity as it is written is also Barbaric, no surprise since they both came from the same source. I would submit that you as a "Christian" do not follow the barbaric teachings of your religion so how do you call yourself a Christian. At least those Muslim Radicals are following their faith which is more than can be said about most Christians. I am very glad of that, I would not want to leave in a country ran by Christians Laws and doctrines, I don't think you would either.

      April 22, 2013 at 9:52 am |
    • Alias

      yes Enoch,
Muslims are all alike and they should all convert to your branch of christianity.
It's Not like there are other options, just barbaric muslims and your interpretation of the bible.
Thanks for explaining it so clearly.

It all come down to the Money issue! We need to stop sending our TAX dollars abroad, we need to stop sending our soldiers abroad. We need them here. The Jewish Settlers should pay for their modern day conquests with their own money.
There is no threat to US. It is all invented by the media. This one guy happens to be a muslim, how many Christians committed crimes and mass shootings in the last few years? Many more. The point is that, we should stop listening to the lying media, and insist on our TAX MONEY be used to improve our Public Safety, give a raise to all Police OFficers, higher more of them, improve our Medical Care and Education systems, etc. Our government is sending 20 million of our tax dollars a day to Israel alone, while we have a huge debt and deficit. That is crazy!

  7. Get real

Look the good Islamist have had their religion hijacked. It will be impossible for them to get it back. The best thing for all of them to do is change the name of their religion to something else and let the extremist have their Allah to themselves. When a group of people does not want to be associated with something bad, they move away from it, change their name, and cut their loses. If real islamist don't believe in the same thing as extreme islamist but any part of their name points in the same direction then it's only common sense that you will be grouped with those people. Change the religions name and call yourselves something else, the name is not what you are practicing, so drop the name and adapt something new that has nothing to do with what those bad people are about. There are no Christian extremist, or Jewish extremist, or Buddist extremist... you are either Christian, Jewish, Buddist, or you aren't. Plain and simple. Either you subscribe or you don't. The religion of ISLAM has been hijacked. Good muslims, you will never get it back, so adapt and change if you want to have your keep your religion from being associated with death, pain, suffering, terror and darkness.

    April 22, 2013 at 8:53 am |
    • Carl

From the day of its founding, islam has been mired in violence. The religion was spread by the sword through Arabia, the mid-east, south Asia, north Africa, and Europe. There is a fundamental problem within the religion whether they want to pursue a path of peace or continue on the road of violence. Simply saying that violence is not a part of the faith does not make it so, particularly when the most heinous acts are committed precisely in the name of islam by those professing the deepest adherence.

At the bottom of the piece it say freedom and justice for all. How about the coffers of the Islamic society pay out of their pocket for the damage by those that use the Islamic faith as a reason for their deeds. That would be a good place to start. See how long they allow those fanatics to walk about using their faith as a cause for terrorism. Simple you pray you pay.

Saraswati, I understand the multi-layed faith that is Islam, let's see the kookyist are the salfist, then its a toss up between Sunni and Shia. The beginning of the faith as most people think that Mohammad was the father of the faith, but he wasn't really. He just hijacked it, not wanting to be out done he went and killed the other forefathers who were all descendants of Abraham. Then once he was done with his first little killing spree he moved the home of Islam to where he thought it should be, after that he sent messengers to all of the known world and they said to the infidels change or die. China like this idea so much they sent Mohammed's messengers heads back to him. What an illustrious beginning.

I guess the first thing I missed on this article, was to say first that those who commit these atrocities do not represent Islam. The second would be that all acts of terrorism are crimes against humanity, and then maybe say "I am a Muslim and this does not represent our faith. These people are killers who do not represent my faith and all acts such of these are reprehensible. Then she should say that I'm going to my mosque and see if I can see people trying to influence others and trying to instill hatred. Then on a wider afield thing say that not only do the police, and security agencies, as well as other government agencies that are trying to find people who would carry out act of terror or try to radicalize their faith. But that muslims from every mosque on the planet will search for these groups within their midst and point them out to the proper authorities so they can be brought out in the open and then brought to justice." Then I might begin to listen to those that try to paint a different picture of their faith.

All religions throughout history have had people who say that they represent their faiths, but those of clearer mind know that these fanatics don't represent their faiths.

After 1340 or so years though it time to take responsibilty for the action of those who pray to the same god, or prophet. Just because you say well I'm not like him, or her. This doesn't absolve you of your responsibility to your faith or mankind for that matter.

You mention the cursades what the christians did, well at least they've learned a thing or two during the intervening 500 or so years.

Everyday is a new day, there is always a chance to start again. So let's all try and behave, if we can't somebody is going to try and blow us up again.

      Peace

'DON'T SCAPEGOAT A FAITH FOR BOMBING' SOUNDS, OH DEAR, SO VERY LOVELY! THE ONLY THING LEFT TO DO IS TO TRY AND CONVINCE THE 1.2 BILLION MUSLIMS THAT JIHAD IS NOT THE WAY TO PEACEFULLY COEXIST WITH ALL OTHER RELIGIONS. IN OTHER WORDS, THAT THE TEACHINGS OF MUHAMMAD 'THE PROPHET', INVENTOR OF ISLAM, DO NOT FIT THE 21ST CENTURY, NOT BY FAR: THAT WOMEN MUST BE RESPECTED SINCE THEY ARE EQUAL TO MEN, THAT A MUSLIM SHOULD NOT LIE TO A NON-MUSLIM AS A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE, THAT LIFE IS PRECIOUS AND OUGHT TO BE CHERISHED, THAT HATING OTHERS IS NOT THE WAY TO LIVE IN A HUMAN SOCIETY, ETC. AND ETC. AND ETC.

SINCE THIS MEANS THAT MUSLIMS NEED TO CONVERT TO OTHER RELIGIONS (IN SPITE OF THE RISK THAT SUCH MOVE ENTAILS), THERE IS LITTLE CHANCE THAT 'THE WAR OF CIVILIZATIONS' WILL END ANY TIME SOON. THEREFORE WE MUST ACCEPT THAT THE CIVILIZED WORLD WILL HAVE TO COEXIST WITH THESE STRANGE PEOPLE FOR A LONG TIME, THAT PROTECTING OUR LIVES AGAINST THEIR SUICIDE BOMBERS WILL DRAIN OUR RESOURCES FOR MANY CENTURIES TO COME.

WHILE NOT ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS, THEY ALL PROTECT THOSE MERCILESS MURDERERS WITHOUT EVER UTTERING A WORD OF PROTEST. MOSQUES AND "CULTURAL CENTERS" ARE THE PLACES WHERE THESE ASSASSINS USUALLY HIDE AND WHERE MANY SUCH ATTACKS ARE PLANNED. FINALLY, THE MUSLIM WORLD IS FINANCING TERRORISM ALL THE WHILED CLAIMING THE CONTRARY; SAUDI ARABIA AND IRAN ARE BUT TWO EXAMPLES OF SUCH GAME.

SORRY, FARHANA KHERA, BUT ON PLANET EARTH NON-MUSLIMS THINK SOMEHOW DIFFERENT THAN THE "TRUE BELIEVERS" DO. AND, WHILE DEFENDING ISLAM (GOD ONLY KNOWS WHY), YOU ARE STILL PART OF THAT IDEOLOGY THAT LOVES TO POSE AS A RELIGION. AS SUCH, YOU WILL TRY TO PROMOTE THE FAIRY TALE THAT ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE WHEN IN YOUR HEART YOU KNOW THAT IT IS NOT. TRYING TO FOOL PEOPLE INTO LOWERING THEIR GUARD AND THUS RISK THEIR LIVES FOR THE SAKE OF A POLITICALLY CORRECT ARGUMENT IS NOT WHAT A CIVILIZED PERSON DOES. OR IS IT?

How can there be anyone left who doesn't know that writing in all-caps is worse than pointless? Really, I'm genuinely curious. It made sense in the early 1990s that people might need this explained, but where do the people who still do this today come from and how do thay miss a piece of etiquette as simple and noncontroversial as restraining from spitting in someone else's food.

she's right, don't scape goat Islam for the bombings - ALL religions are equally crazy and illogical, producing nutjob extremists that think their acts of evil are acts of piety. religion teaches people to turn off their brains. it teaches people NOT to think for themselves.

    April 22, 2013 at 5:15 am |
    • Saraswati

The United States has roughly the same number of Muslims and Buddhists. While it is not fair to blame a religion in its entirety for these acts, nor to assume all support them, it is entirely fair to ask why two groups who have rouly the same sized populations in the US have such radically different figures for violent behaviors, both terror and non-terror related. The answers will not be as simple as anyone on any side of the debate is hoping.

      April 22, 2013 at 6:43 am |
    • nclaw441

Booty– Extremists and illogical people come from all segments of society, including religious faith and non-faith, but that does not prove, or even suggest, that religion is the cause for the behavior.

True, religious faith often runs counter to secular logic and understanding, but that logic and understanding is also incomplete. Since man has existed he has sought to find out about where we come from, how the earth and universe came to exist and what our purpose is. The fact that we have always done this as a species suggests that it is somehow encoded in our DNA. Theories of a big bang are no more credible or provable than theories based upon God as creator.

I started down a road to talk to the issues here and tried to correct one word and instead of deleting the last word I had written it deleted everything. I understand where your coming from with what you had written and say well yes the evidence is kind of hard to ignore. I wonder though why this young lady and others of the Islamic faith don't go well beyond the point of telling us that these attacks are horrible for all Americans. I'm catholic, no big deal right, but every time you mention that, we as catholics hear about the priests who committed acts of pedophilia. Some outside the faith say how can you still be catholic with these people who do these horrible things. So we know that every religion has things in its closet. These people have to be brought to justice, and if I as a catholic knew of a pedophile in the church or anywhere have a responsibility to see that criminal faces justice. Even when we think we have found all of them their will still be bad fruit on the tree. It doesn't mean we stop, because we will never find all of them, no it means you keep vigilant and if another is found out, bring them to justice as well. These people don't make us change our faith though. By that same stroke though people within the Islamic faith have to be vigilant within their communties, and if there is chance someone in their faith is radiclizing others, or they themselves may be plotting to commit these crimes against humanity. Then the people within the faith have a responsibility to let law enforcement know. They have to denounce these acts, in a sense this is a war against the Islamic faith by their own. If a Sunni commits an act of terror against a Shia, or if someone is twisting your faith as the Salfist are doing, then it is in the interest of those that practise your faith to not let it happen. This is a faith of approx. 1.2 or 1.3 billion people, if ten or fifteen percent wish to wage war, that's 120 to 150 million people, its not a small number. This is why it is your war first, and why the rest of us from other faiths sense that it not one your really trying to win. That's where people like this young lady might want to start. With "we of the Islamic faith need everyone's help to deal with this war". That's what it is, and until that is recognized, the support you seek from the common man, will be hard to find.

read the bible. what exactly is the difference between Islam and Christianity when it comes to acts of pure evil? the bible says to kill all g.ays, non-virgin brides, disobedient children and anyone working the weekend. god himself kills babies a number of times (i.e. first born of egypt). and how much misery have christians doled out around the world in the name of "God"? christianity itself is just as bad as islam or any other religion - it's just that christians don't really follow the bible closely these days, thankfully. if any christian actually followed the bible, they would be among the world's worst serial killer/mass murders ever to have existed.

Which one would you have me read, see (sarcasm). I may have been raised catholic, I didn't say that I agreed with any of what they taught. They and by they I refer to every book of faith all the way down to the scout book. Were all written by men, and yes I'm a man, why on earth would I listen to those that wrote these books. Not a one is needed for our civilization to carry on living. We have progressed to a point that we now make up laws, and most of them are just dribble set in place for the tightassed people of wealth can feel more secure in their existence. Even though most of them are the biggest criminals. We work with what we have though and for the most part it seems to work, there is still a fair amount of prejudice though in the legal system, justice is supposed to be blind. Just ask someone of African American descent if they think its blind. Religions have done one thing extremely well and that's persecute and kill in its own name. They can all go the way of the Dodo. Thanks for the feedback though Booty, a free exchange of thoughts is the way its supposed to be.

One cannot break the destructive pattern of Muslims without showing compassion to those we cannot understand. Islamabot and those like him were not loved as children.

Lack of compassion, lack of trust, anger...these thing come from ones childhood; their parents. Violent religions beget violent children and a violent world. Negative mind, anger, fear, distrust...these things bring unnecessary problems. This is, among many others, why the Judeo-Christians/Muslim traditions are evil at the core. They all breed hate.

Allow me to quote from the Qur'an. The reason why it is a reasonable consideration to consider American Muslims are not in support of Ametica's terrorists attacks.

Qur'an (5:51) – "O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people."

Case in point was Fort Hood attack by a Muslim army major doctor that killed 13 solders. In Nov 09.

the correct translation of the quranic term "awliya" in the above verse is 'protectors". not "friends".

do not take jews and christians as your protectors, they are only protectors of each other. like christian usa and israel.

which is why wahabi saudi arabia is in direct contradiction to this quranic verse. saudi is a virtual 51st state of the usa. armed entirely byte usa, who also does all its fighting for it, when saudi is attacked.

      ------
had the quran not wanted muslims to be "friends" with jews and christians, surely it would have in such case not allowed muslims to marry jewish christian women as well as eat their food (meat)?

The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public. Hena dropped after 70 and died a week later.

    23) "October 4, 2011, 100 die as a truck loaded with drums of fuel exploded Tuesday at the gate of compound housing several government ministries on a busy Mogadishu street. Religions compromise many issues of cultured secular socialisms. While compromising the religious, secular socialists can never answer the problem of where all matter came from if nothingness was and is and shall ever be the prime mover of all matter that being of atomic cosmologies. Islam nor Christendom nor any other religious integral can care to consider that there is but One God who created the celestial cosmos out of atomic cosmologies. 'Modern' science practi tioners cannot deny that it took the birthing of the atomic cosmos to give rise to the celestial cosmos. Two cosmologic dimensions each being a part and parcel of spatial relativity.
