Catholic ads in NY: Jesus was 'the original hipster'

By Pallavi Reddy, CNN

(CNN) - Ads around Brooklyn bring a new meaning to Joan Osborne's lyrics, “What if God was one of us?”

In a new ad campaign launched by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn this month, people in the borough and neighboring Queens have a new way to view Jesus: “The Original Hipster.”

The ads feature the bottom half of a man - meant to be Jesus - wearing robes with a pair of dirty red Converse sneakers peeking out from the bottom.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

In a news release, the diocese refers to Seth Meyers' joke on “Saturday Night Live” that Converse sneakers are why more Catholics are returning to the church, and says the marketing campaign is “showing a cooler and more welcoming side of the Catholic Church.”

Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, near Queens, is considered to be the "unofficial East Coast birthplace of hipsterism," as a 2012 article in Forbes put it.

Monsignor Kieran Harrington said he understood the importance of relating to the people of the area.

“Jesus appears (in these ads) like people of the L train,” he said. “What is a hipster anyway? Someone who stands against the (mainstream) culture. Jesus stood against the culture.”

CNN Belief: The Curious Case of the Christian Hipster

Ten months ago, the conversation started about creating such a campaign to let people know there are a variety of different faces who attend the church.

Harrington says these particular ads were a collaboration with the ad and PR agency Ruckus. Now they are found in places where the church doesn't usually advertise, including bus stands, restaurants and gyms.

The ads have generated online buzz in Salon, the Gothamist and other sites, and traffic on the diocese's website has gone up 400%, Harrington said.

As for what kind of ads to expect from the diocese next, the monsignor said: “It’s for you to find out.”

"Vain words" like "You're so special that the entire universe was special-made just for you, and it's creator has a special interest in you personally"? Vain words like claiming to know more about life on this planet and how the universe began than the scientists with the highest IQs do? Nope, there's nothing like Christianity to stroke a person's vanity.

"Whoever has told you faith is claimed knowledge was lying to you or to themselves."

    Glenn,

Faith IS claimed knowlege. Religion is not saying 'god might be true' or 'Jesus maybe was Lord and savior'. Maybe YOU aren't playing to that level of certainty but most are. If you are not claiming knowledge than what is your message? That the Christian faith is just a possibility? Just one of the many possibilites? And you pick that one as being true for you because why? Tradition? Indoctrination? Comfort? Personal experience? Those are all the same reasons the Hindu in India or the Muslim in Saudi Arabia have. I want to believe things that ARE true, not MIGHT be true.

"My only real question to you is whether or not you have faith that there is No God or do you simply not know?"

I don't know Glenn, neither does anybody. But the time to positively believe a claim is when there is proper foundation to accept the claim. No religion has ever done that, or even come close.

"As to the absurdity of God well I feel that way when I listen to Atheist start to talk about the origins of all matter and later to life itself."

I have not heard an atheist claim with absolute certainty they know the origins of matter. Of course they don't believe in god so they will not speculate or give an opinion that "god created everything". I don't know why that is surprising. As I noted earlier every historical claim of gods hand has had a natural cause in the end. Why should anyone accept the "god claim" when to this point it has not panned out as an answer for anything. Keeping "god" open as a possibility is not what religion is doing, they are claiming it as fact.

The bottom line to all of this is that something is true when this life is over. Something will happen to you. We're all going to die, and something- or nothing- is going to happen to our souls. You are going to heaven or to hell or into a hole in the ground or to eternal sleep or into eternal nothingness- but something is true. For a Christian to truly believe what the Bible says about unbelievers and then not warn them would be a terrible offense. That's why Christians tell you about Jesus. Or that's why they should tell you. If I die and Jesus was a myth, well- I'll find out. We all will someday. But I don't need proof to have faith in my God. You say you need proof, so be it. Don't believe. But don't be so offended when a person tries to tell you about Jesus- if they are true believers, they are telling you out of love and concern for your eternal soul.

" something- or nothing- is going to happen to our souls. " This is a false statement since it relys upon the premise that soul's exist when there is no evidence to support that hypothesis.

" they are telling you out of love and concern for your eternal soul" Again, statement carries no weight when viewed from the default of a soul needing to be proven before you can bribe or extort a person with it. I can tell you that you need to behave or you won't get a Unicorn for Christmas this year, but I doubt that will have much impact on your behavior as I doubt you are a believer in Unicorns. Now if I showed you a briefcase with a million dollars in it and said if you don't behave I won't give you the money, now you have some actual proven reward you can work hard for.

Fact: After thousands of years and billions of humans not one single shred of evidence exists of any soul or life force that lives on after death. Period.

      @lh,
" Don't believe. But don't be so offended when a person tries to tell you about Jesus- if they are true believers, they are telling you out of love and concern for your eternal soul."

      1) If you think they haven't heard about Jesus, at least in the US, then you are deluding yourself.
      2) Why shouldn't we be offended when we are being accused of being evil, and threatened with burning in hell for eternity.
      3) If Jesus was truly concerned about our "eternal souls", then why doesn't He simply convince us rather than "hardening" our hearts? It almost seems as if He doesn't want us to believe, given all the misleading, deceptive, information He's put out there... Alternatively, it all makes sense if He just doesn't exist.

      ME II,

I think it is 2 sides of the same coin. Both ways are saying the claim is true, one is just saying they can't prove it and the other is saying they have personal revelation. I understand your point though. I was trying to get across to Glenn that he IS claiming it to be true, not that it is just a possibility.

      ih,

I know some Christians are sincere in being concerned for people's soul. And that is nice of them to be concerned. I personally think if your religion has to resort to threats it is a weak belief. Teaching that concept to children is abusive as is the christian god.

Well, all I can really say in response to all of this is...read a bible sometime. Religion is not God- it's the opposite of God. Religion wants to bind you, Jesus wants to set you free. God doesn't harden your heart- He is not willing for any to perish. Religion has done more to damage the Gospel of Jesus Christ than all the atheists combined. Try reading a King James Bible some time- just you, no religious people telling you anything. Just read it and see what it says. Just pretend for a minute that God wrote a book and this is what He said. Don't put religion into it, just read what it says and then form an opinion. I wonder how many of you have ever even read it?

      ih,

Crack a history book sometime. The bible IS the book of the Christian religion, it was written by people in a religion, it was edited and canonized by people in a religion. Believing Jesus Christ is God ...IS a religion. Your inane arguement that belief in the bible as the holy word of a god is not "religious" is abusrd, ignorant and patronizing. I have read the bible, the message of the bible is immoral. It threatens punishement based on non-belief, it is not "good news".

Humans are as perfect as any other organism in the universe, perfectly adapted for most climates and the ones we are not adaptable to we used our brains to develop self contained habitats so we could explore areas our bodies were not suited for. We've been to the bottom of our oceans, we been to the surface of our moon, we've sent robots hundreds of thousands of miles to explore the surface of other planets. Not to toot our own horn, but how much more perfectly adaptable do we have to be for the nay sayers to accept were pretty damn amazing and shouldn't saddle ourselves with mountains of archaic guilt for no other reason than to control the uneducated masses.

Richard, If that is not the claim you are making) that you are not perfect), then what exactly is your objection to Romans 3:23?

      April 25, 2013 at 1:22 pm |
    • Richard Cranium

My problem with Romans is the same as for the rest of the bible. It was created by men, makes claims of supernatural things with no evidence to back it up, makes people think that they are sinners, when sin is just another creation from within the bible. It is a story used to frighten children into behaving.
I am not a sinner as there are no gods to defy. I am not perfect because there is no definition of what a perfect person is.

  13. Reality

And now for some truth and consequences:

Jesus was an illiterate Jewish peasant/carpenter/simple preacher man who suffered from hallucinations (or “mythicizing” from P, M, M, L and J) and who has been characterized anywhere from the Messiah from Nazareth to a mythical character from mythical Nazareth to a ma-mzer from Nazareth (Professor Bruce Chilton, in his book Rabbi Jesus). An-alyses of Jesus’ life by many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Professors Ludemann, Crossan, Borg and Fredriksen, ) via the NT and related doc-uments have concluded that only about 30% of Jesus' sayings and ways noted in the NT were authentic. The rest being embellishments (e.g. miracles)/hallucinations made/had by the NT authors to impress various Christian, Jewish and Pagan sects.

The 30% of the NT that is "authentic Jesus" like everything in life was borrowed/plagiarized and/or improved from those who came before. In Jesus' case, it was the ways and sayings of the Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Hitt-ites, Canaanites, OT, John the Baptizer and possibly the ways and sayings of traveling Greek Cynics.

    earlychristianwritings.com/

For added "pizzazz", Catholic theologians divided god the singularity into three persons and invented atonement as an added guilt trip for the "pew people" to go along with this trinity of overseers. By doing so, they made god the padre into god the "filicider".

    Current RCC problems:

Too many pedophiliac priests, an all-male, "celibate", old, mostly white hierarchy, atonement theology and original sin!!!!

Then why there are so many gay people being preachers and you also find them where there is a large number of men reunited, like the army or the scouts for example? Also in baseball, hockey and athletes. Pedophiles are not different that gay people. They are the same people, of course you have those who are trying hard to separate them into different categories but it won't change the fact that they are the same type of people.

Get some education, Atheists are Losers.

      Pedophiles prey on children.
      Homosexuals do not.

Both Pedophiles and child molesters are primarily heterosexual males. Active pedophilic behavior generally starts slowing down around age 35; the child molester generally continues his victimization until he is no longer physically able due to age, illness, injury, or incarceration.

Obviously ordination in any religion is not assurance of good behavior !!!!!

Neither is coronation!!! e.g. Henry VIII, King David.

Neither is marriage as 50% of those men convicted of pedophilia are married.

Neither is being elected president of the USA!! e.g. Billy "I did not have s-ex with that girl" Clinton, John "Marilyn Monroe" Kennedy".

Neither is possessing super athletic skill!!! e.g. Tiger "I am so sorry for getting caught" Woods.

Neither is being an atheist or pagan or football coach since pedophilia is present in all walks of life.

If someone is guilty of a crime in this litany of "neithers" they should or should have been penalized as the law dictates to include jail terms for pedophiliacs (priests, rabbis, evangelicals, boy scout leaders, married men/women, football coaches), divorce for adultery (Clinton, Kennedy, Woods), jail terms for obstruction of justice (Paterno et al Clinton, Cardinal Law) or child endangerment (Paterno in abstentia, Sandusky et al, Lynn) and the death penalty or life in prison for murder ("Kings David and Henry VIII).

Just type down the word "religion, jesus, god" in the CNN search box and you will find a large number of articles with pages of commentaries made by atheists using name calling toward a small amount of religious people compare to atheists who are posting. If you atheists wants proof and facts then do this little search on this CNN website in the archives area and you will see it. Richard are you really asking me to go and make a research in the CNN archives about how many atheists there are on comment boards here and then coming back to give you a number? Are you out of your mind. I am not going to spend the next 25 years to do that search, because that's how long it will take just to pull out the reality of them atheists behaviors. I don't need to go to that length, all someone as to do is just spend the next few minutes looking and search for themselves an they will soon realized that what i'm saying is true. It goes way beyond only names calling, there were for an example on that article about those little 20 kids that were shot dead not too long ago, i have seen a huge amount of atheists not even offering a single moral support to the families involved, all they did was calling people names and being arrogant to those who offered prayers to these families. Not a single atheist make a positive comment. And this is just one example of your atheist behavior. Go and do that research for yourself, after all you are the one proclaiming to be a genius with an high IQ, don't geniuses loves to make researches?

Try putting this question to a devout christian? Why did god have to knock up Mary, a married woman, when he could just have created a grown man like he did with Adam? Would have saved a lot of time and kept Joseph from wondering about the whole stupid story.

What do you think is more likely:
      1) Magic impregnation
      2) A lie told to avoid getting stoned to death

If you can't imagine a world in which a woman would be chaste, you should probably vote for free contraception and government funded abortion

Is irrelevant. Billy is an obsequious papal apologist troll...and
Stated...A criminal might subvert this sacrament but that would make him a criminal, not a priest and would result in immediate ex-communication.
Bill's wisdom...The truth is the truth whether everyone believes it or no believes it.
You are right for a change Billy and pay for it (contraception and early term abortions) by removing tax exempt status from religions and not allowing a tax deduction for charitable contributions for religious organizations.

"If you can't imagine a world in which a woman would be chaste, you should probably vote for free contraception and government funded abortion."

I'm a little confused by this Bill. Are you saying that even if women choose to be chaste, they shouldn't have access to contraception?

      @Bill
While I certainly can imagine a world in which a woman is chaste, a pregnant virgin is awfully hard to quantify.
Can you imagine a world in which a unchaste woman would do anything she could to keep her neighbours from murdering her for being a harlot?
