Catholic ads in NY: Jesus was 'the original hipster'

By Pallavi Reddy, CNN

(CNN) - Ads around Brooklyn bring a new meaning to Joan Osborne's lyrics, “What if God was one of us?”

In a new ad campaign launched by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn this month, people in the borough and neighboring Queens have a new way to view Jesus: “The Original Hipster.”

The ads feature the bottom half of a man - meant to be Jesus - wearing robes with a pair of dirty red Converse sneakers peeking out from the bottom.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

In a news release, the diocese refers to Seth Meyers' joke on “Saturday Night Live” that Converse sneakers are why more Catholics are returning to the church, and says the marketing campaign is “showing a cooler and more welcoming side of the Catholic Church.”

Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, near Queens, is considered to be the "unofficial East Coast birthplace of hipsterism," as a 2012 article in Forbes put it.

Monsignor Kieran Harrington said he understood the importance of relating to the people of the area.

“Jesus appears (in these ads) like people of the L train,” he said. “What is a hipster anyway? Someone who stands against the (mainstream) culture. Jesus stood against the culture.”

CNN Belief: The Curious Case of the Christian Hipster

Ten months ago, the conversation started about creating such a campaign to let people know there are a variety of different faces who attend the church.

Harrington says these particular ads were a collaboration with the ad and PR agency Ruckus. Now they are found in places where the church doesn't usually advertise, including bus stands, restaurants and gyms.

The ads have generated online buzz in Salon, the Gothamist and other sites, and traffic on the diocese's website has gone up 400%, Harrington said.

As for what kind of ads to expect from the diocese next, the monsignor said: “It’s for you to find out.”

one of the mentally ill people on this blog asserts: "god reveals himself supernaturally"

so far – to the absolute best of our knowledge – there is nothing supernatural.

there are a few people who've made careers out of debunking claims of the paranormal and supernatural. james randi for instance.

claims of esp, telekinesis, clairvoyance, astrology, faith healing, and homeopathy to name just a few, have all been scrutinized repeatedly in the past – never once has any testing verified any of these supernatural or paranormal claims. each and every one – firmly debunked.

people used to attribute sicknesses and disease to demons. louis pasteur wasn't intent on debunking these ideas when he discovered bacteria, it just happened as a natural course of his work.

people used to attribute the rising and setting of the sun to gods. galileo, kepler, and copernicus didn't set out to debunk this idea – it just happened through their discoveries.

by way of the scientific method – these ideas were debunked – unintentionally.

science doesn't set out to debunk the supernatural in its search for understanding of particle physics, cosmology, biology, etc... it just happens – and for a good reason... there is nothing supernatural.

a person can try to be reasonable and claim the existence of the supernatural is possible – but seriously – how probable is it? i suppose if there had been just one instance of the verification of any claim of the supernatural – it might be considered good evidence to support the possibility of other claims for the supernatural or paranormal. hasn't happened yet – and based on experience – there's no good reason to believe it ever will.

i feel it's important to note that no one can posit the existence of a god without invoking the supernatural – it is impossible.

...and just because there may be no way to test a supernatural claim – doesn't give that claim an ounce of validity.

i think it's great for people to keep an open mind – but not so open all their intelligence falls out.

I dont need James Randi to validate God, or your opinion. I know the truth, and you can hear my voice and take into account what one person says, and I put it on my life, that God has revealed Himself supernaturally to me. I stand on the word of God. He is risen.

I dont do it for a hobby. I do it because I received a strong call to faith. there is one truth. the one is God.

James Randi can put me to the test. but I dont seek James Randi. Im right here everyone. my name is Austin. I have experienced the supernatural God. there are many shadow faiths and deceptive works of the devil, mediums and cult spirituality. false religions, false sects, and dead religions.

God is the author of all spiritual beings. He is not responsible for deception. the Living God, has given us His Word.

      Come to the cross.

The only people who say that they don't need science to back up what they're selling are the con men. If they had the science on their side that"s what they'd be using to back up their claims way before "faith". Con men want you to have faith in what they're selling too.

      April 26, 2013 at 8:47 am |
    • Austin

Not true Ken, in this case, there is God, who revealed Himself directly to the prophets, and at time Israel, but God distanced Himself because people were still disobedient. They still turned their backs on God. There are also those who invented other Gods, who are frauds. The important thing for you is to personally seed God. The one true God. you dont need anyone else to do that Ken. No one , No one, No one, is asking you for money. Put your faith in God alone.

How do you know the other gods are frauds; have you been able to prove it?

There are more things of value to trade than just money. Don't you believe that there are religious con men out there swindling people into placing their faith in false beliefs? If there are then it shouldn't be too difficult to see our point of view; that ALL religions are false belief systems that don't deserve anyone's confidence. If you can't demonstrate that you're religion is provable any more than the thousands of "false" religions and cults out there, how can anyone be sure that they're not all cons?

Ancient Earth Crust Stored in Deep Mantle

Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

The apostle Paul experienced the leading of the Holy Spirit in his daily life. He saw a  great spiritual principle in the Christian life. “As many as are led by the Spirit of God,

yes there are angels. and they are looking into salvation with great intent and joy.

I had parts of Gods biblical word supernaturally revealed to me in dreams before I read it, I was dreaming about things i didn't know about that were from the bible.

#1I dreamt about the tile patio , a huge and beautiful rock tile with wide grout and a beautiful pattern and color, ater i had entered a stone arch entrance. There was an arm reaching into a whole, a whole chizzeled out of the ground. and the arm pulled out a leather bag full of gems. wrote these down in the middle or the night half asleep. The next day....I kept reading my bible.......

      Jeremiah 43:8-13
      New American Standard Bible (NASB)
8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9 “Take some large stones in your [a]hands and hide them in the mortar in the brick terrace which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s [c]palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of [d]some of the J.ews; 10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I am going to set his throne right over these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his canopy over them.

#2 the next night I dreamed that i was being attacked by a motorcycle gang and that the leader of the gang had a huge animal horn, att.atched to his seat. he could not even sit on his bike. he was trying to run me over. they were a rebel gang.
the next day, i had finished reading Jeremiah and gotten into Lament.ations

      ◄ Lament.ations 2:3 ►

      New International Version (©2011)
In fierce anger he has cut off every horn of Israel. He has withdrawn his right hand at the approach of the enemy. He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything around it.
      ◄ Lament.ations 2:17 ►

      New International Version (©2011)
The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago. He has overthrown you without pity, he has let the enemy gloat over you, he has exalted the horn of your foes.

I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH AND THE STONES, AND I HAD NO RECOLLECTION OF LAMENTA.TIONS. i COULD NOT HAVE TOLD YOU WHAT ONE MAIN POINT WAS OTHER THAN I KNEW JEREMIAH WAS A PROPHET.

#3 a few days later I had a dream that there was a huge pile of feathers underneath a bed. that day, I was reading in the book of daniel, ◄ Daniel 4:33 ►

      New International Version (©2011)
Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.

the kid who i had the dream about, got into trouble that day, which i had suspected the feather was a sign that he would be humiliated. he had his work pass suspended which was a major blow.

#4 dreamed I was poisoned by mercury in alcohol. the next dream, didnt have a single dream for two weeks, this next dream I had just let two snakes out of a cage. one was a viper, the other was a rattler. but I had not thought even thought the word viper for a long time. when i woke up, i said to the kid next to me................."something is going to happen today, this one is a sign" i knew the snakes were a sign..

two hours later i went down to bible study, the leader, on the second passage, said turn to proverbs 23:32

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has blo.odshot eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
      when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
      and poisons like a viper.

#5 Dreamed i was in a wh.ore house and I flooded it because i turned on a water spitot upstairs and just let it go and left it on. I had been praying about lust. I didnt catch this dream, until a few week later i did a study on water. I had no clue about this dream. i seemed like a random joke. but i got kicked out for letting the water run and flood.

15 Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. 16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? 17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. 18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer– may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. 20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man's wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? 21 For your ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all your paths. 22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.

      Austin, Austin, Austin,

Once again bringing you into the 21st century:

AND THE INFAMOUS ANGELIC CONS CONTINUE TO WREAK STUPIDITY UPON THE WORLD

Joe Smith had his Moroni. (As does M. Romney)

"Latter-day Saints like M. Romney also believe that Michael the Archangel was Adam (the first man) when he was mortal, and Gabriel lived on the earth as Noah."

      Jehovah Witnesses have their Jesus /Michael the archangel, the first angelic being created by God;

Mohammed had his Gabriel (this "tinker bell" got around).

Jesus and his family had/has Michael, Gabriel, and Satan, the latter being a modern day demon of the demented. (As does BO and his family)(As do Biden and Ryan)

The Abraham-Moses myths had their Angel of Death and other "no-namers" to do their dirty work or other assorted duties.

Contemporary biblical and religious scholars have relegated these "pretty wingie/horn-blowing thingies" to the myth pile. We should do the same to include deleting all references to them in our religious operating manuals. Doing this will eliminate the prophet/profit/prophecy status of these founders and put them where they belong as simple humans just like the rest of us.

      Some added references to "tink-erbells".

      newadvent.org/cathen/07049c.htm

"The belief in guardian angels can be traced throughout all antiquity; pagans, like Menander and Plutarch (cf. Euseb., "Praep. Evang.", xii), and Neo-Platonists, like Plotinus, held it. It was also the belief of the Babylonians and As-syrians, as their monuments testify, for a figure of a guardian angel now in the British Museum once decorated an As-syrian palace, and might well serve for a modern representation; while Nabopolassar, father of Nebuchadnezzar the Great, says: "He (Marduk) sent a tutelary deity (cherub) of grace to go at my side; in everything that I did, he made my work to succeed."
Catholic monks and Dark Age theologians also did their share of hallu-cinating:

"TUBUAS-A member of the group of angels who were removed from the ranks of officially recognized celestial hierarchy in 745 by a council in Rome under Pope Zachary. He was joined by Uriel, Adimus, Sabaoth, Simiel, and Raguel."

And tin-ker- bells go way, way back:

"In Zoroastrianism there are different angel like creatures. For example each person has a guardian angel called Fravashi. They patronize human being and other creatures and also manifest god’s energy. Also, the Amesha Spentas have often been regarded as angels, but they don't convey messages, but are rather emanations of Ahura Mazda ("Wise Lord", God); they appear in an abstract fashion in the religious thought of Zarathustra and then later (during the Achaemenid period of Zoroastrianism) became personalized, associated with an aspect of the divine creation (fire, plants, water...)."

"The beginnings of the biblical belief in angels must be sought in very early folklore. The gods of the Hitti-tes and Canaanites had their supernatural messengers, and parallels to the Old Testament stories of angels are found in Near Eastern literature. "

"The 'Magic Papyri' contain many spells to secure just such help and protection of angels. From magic traditions arose the concept of the guardian angel. "

For added information see the review at:

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel
"The prophet Ezekiel described an incredible vision of cherubim angels in Ezekiel chapter 10 of the Torah and the Bible, mentioning that the angels’ wings were “completely full of eyes” (verse 12) and “under their wings was what looked like human hands” (verse 21). The angels each used their wings and something “like a wheel intersecting a wheel” (verse 10) that “sparkled like topaz” (verse 9) to move around."

For a rather extensive review of angel wings, see http://angels.about.com/od/AngelBasics/a/Angels-Wings-And-Things.htm

I'm always amazed at people who advocate violence in the name of tolerance and unity. If we extrapolate Anvils logic it should be easy to see that left to his own device and placing himself as ultimate authority, mankind will degenerate into tribes and factions striving for power and subjugating those whom they can for economic or other gains. Doesn't matter if they are non-religious or orthodox of some kind. The reason Jesus is Lord is that he shows the way by his Passion to overcome the self and love others by sacrifice. This is how he overcame the world, that while he was without sin, he suffered for our iniquities. Careful study of what actually happened at Calvary and an honest look into his heart should instruct a reasonable man that he is capable of any atrocity to another and able to justify it. Without Jesus, there is no model, no example of a better way. He is the way, the truth and the life.

bill deacon in his ignorance manages to peg reality for only the briefest moment – and quite by accident: "mankind will degenerate into tribes and factions striving for power and subjugating those whom they can for economic or other gains."

      lol

and that's not what's already going on, how exactly?

of course – no one could ever accuse any religions of facilitating this... could they??

      lol

      also...

it was a rhetorical question, billtard. try pulling your head out of your rectum and wise the fuck up, idiot.

"maybe it's time to face the fact that something as harmful as the collective mental illness that is religion should be dealt with violently?

definitely, without a doubt, tolerance of religious idiocy has to end... by any means necessary.

Folks talk about the soul as a religious item – that it synonymous with religion –
But religions don't really explain what a soul is – because they don't know – only a possible destination –
Before you get all huffy, please consider where my concept comes from –
I am no longer religious –
I studied Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs for dozens of years, and determined a different design, for what the glyphs could portend – and found some interesting thought processes hidden within – including what the soul is –
for instance: The Ankh symbol represents Life –
the charcters for An and kh, I translate as an=thought and kh=soul –
Thus Life = the thought of the soul –
The soul as described by the AE, is a continuity between 2 or more enti-ties – including the enti-ty Environment –
Our environment creates us – some name their environment as god – some believe there is a continuity with their environment – that is soul –

    I am a stone carver –
I affect the stone, and the stone affects me – it is a continuity with the stone –
The stone also affects others, and their environment –
I am not the stone, and the stone is not me – the stones already have stories, which are not my story in life –
It is different experience, than physical and mental, it is a continuity of oneness – without which, I am no longer the stone carver – I animate the stone, and the stone animates me, in my environment –
I feel this way about my environment – it animates me, and i in turn animate it – it is my continuity with my environment –
These thoughts and thinkings, and knowledges of my soul, my continuities, become my perception of my environment –
My environment gives me life, and I give life to my environment –

Our environments overlap – to know this, one must get to understandings, beyond themselves – that ability is perception –
One can perceive life beyond themselves, or what good are books or stories or language –
To perceive continuity with an environment is a wisdom – it is what makes the genius a genius – it is the Einstein, or Beethoven, or Michaelangelo – it is possible for anyone to achieve –
Some are not able to get beyond themselves, their soul is trapped, their continuity is limited –

The goal for the AE was to create an Eye, a perception, a way of seeing, which could perceive environment –
And so armed with the Ankh, the thought of the soul, the continuities with other enti-ties, they could become to a oneness with their environment –
And we all do this process – we all have a continuity with our environment –
The atheists have their environment, and so do the religious –
Can they perceive beyond themselves and become to understand other environments? – I believe so –

Imagine your continuity with anyone, or anything, or any place or any time –
Science does this explained as -ologies –
Religion does this with prayer –
Imagine your soul – give live to your continuity with your environment, and you will understand how it gives life to you –

The soul is continuity to that which is outside of your self –

You are welcome to check with any honest scientist in the field of mathematics or physics and they will tell you the same thing. Science does not and cannot speak into the GAPs of that which is and can be proven. There is no scientific proof that our existence began due to any known causation or quantum gravitational phase period. It is a matter of subjective belief to assume the supernatural or the natural.
Sorry, that is the way it is as today. But, go on and hope for some anti God proof because you have the same thing I do hope. It is simply a matter of where you put your hope.

The probability of primordial soul, even given the introduction of carbon by external source, resulting in the origin of life between the period late heavy bombardment and the first discovered fossils is nil. Your soup is not the most likely candidate based on current evidence. Do the math. Stromatolites date back 3.75 billion years and late heavy bombardment 3.8 billion years. That does not give your soup enough time to cool yet alone begin to from complex cells.

BS to your RNA end around it does not work, even your local biology professor will set you straight. Production of RNA chains from building blocks only takes place if the building blocks are chemically activated and could not happen in the time period or environment following heavy late bombardment.
Instability of the RNA chain as molecules are added results in hydrolysis, breaking the chain down. In short the chains cannot achieve the length needed to generate a ribozyme.

You could not be more wrong. The GAP's are getting so large that we use mathematical abstracts in attempts to explain away the improbability of existence that gets larger and larger the more we find out about our universe. Theory M, string theory and spontaneous creation models are based on mathematical constructs which have the same result in more than one reality and many abstract dimensions.
If you think increasing the number of possible realities somehow just narrowed the GAP you need God more than I do.

Bill's wisdom...The truth is the truth whether everyone believes it or no one believes it. ???
Posters form a pattern of behaviour, when some get to the point they do not have a rebuttal they choose to leave the discussion or start a new thread. Chad is quite adept at this tactic. You on the other hand take your beatings like a man and always forgive the trespasser just like you are supposed too, good boy.

@Bill Deacon "Why do people accuse regular posters of running away when it is obvious that they are simply not continually glued to their computers 24 hours a day? Is it nothing more than the opportunity to hurl an insult at someone they disagree with?"

      =>indeed

      Christians get accused simultaneously of
      A. Always trying to get the last word in, "super endurance" on a particular topic
B "running away" from a topic

Pretty irrational, but there it is.

Many of the "New Atheism" breed are going to criticize for anything and everything, it simply doesnt matter if there is any data to actually back up what they are saying, or any rationality to what they say.

Since you have publicly admitted you dont know anything about Christine doctrine you'll need to stop criticizing the bible/doctrine.

You are of course free to criticize the behavior of Christians, but (as you now admit), ANY criticism of Christian beliefs from you is utter nonsense, because (as you admit) none of what you say is based on any fact.

The thing about Chad is that anyone who disagrees with what he asserts all Christians believe, they:
      a) Haven't read the bible; or
      b) Hate god and are just trying to lie

He even thinks he can decide what all atheists believe.
Of course, and criticism is met with answers of:

      a) Read the bible until you agree with me
      b) Avoidance of the questions
      c) Ignoring the post completely

How did everyone who is posting on here have their minds get so badly out of comission?

First of all if there is one Atheist who is a cannibal or one Christian who murders it does not mean everyone with (or without a diety) is also responsible for that one person's actions.

Second, It's a picture of a diety in sneakers for pitty's sake. That's funny..it's comedy gold. But your conversations and posts are about murderers and cannibals.

Chile arrests 4 accused of burning baby in rite for being ‘the antichrist’

By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, April 25, 3:26 PM

SANTIAGO, Chile — Chilean police on Thursday arrested four people accused of burning a baby alive in a ritual because the leader of the sect believed that the end of the world was near and that the child was the antichrist.

The 3-day-old baby was taken to a hill in the town of Colliguay near the Chilean port of Valparaiso on Nov. 21 and was thrown into a bonfire. The baby’s mother, 25-year-old Natalia Guerra, had allegedly approved the sacrifice and was among those arrested.

Authorities said the 12-member sect was formed in 2005 and was led by Ramon Gustavo Castillo Gaete, 36, who remains at large.

“Everyone in this sect was a professional,” Ampuero said. “We have someone who was a veterinarian and who worked as a flight attendant, we have a filmmaker, a draftsman. Everyone has a university degree. “

The Parable of the Great Banquet

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

“There were people who called themselves Satanists who made Crowley squirm. It wasn't just the things they did, it was the way they blamed it all on Hell. They'd come up with some stomach-churning idea that no demon could have thought of in a thousand years, some dark and mindless unpleasantness that only a fully-functioning human brain could conceive, then shout "The Devil Made Me Do It" and get the sympathy of the court when the whole point was that the Devil hardly ever made anyone do anything. He didn't have to. That was what some humans found hard to understand. Hell wasn't a major reservoir of evil, any more than Heaven, in Crowley's opinion, was a fountain of goodness; they were just sides in the great cosmic chess game. Where you found the real McCoy, the real grace and the real heart-stopping evil, was right inside the human mind.”
