Minaret destroyed at 12th-century Syrian mosque on World Heritage list

By Michael Martinez and Hamdi Alkhshali , CNN

(CNN) - Both sides in Syria's civil war were in rare agreement Wednesday: The minaret at a 12th-century mosque in Aleppo has been obliterated.

Unclear, however, was who destroyed the tower at the Great Umayyad Mosque, which has witnessed the march of nine centuries. It was just last month that a United Nations official expressed concern about the two-year war possibly damaging the mosque, a World Heritage site.

An opposition group blamed the government.

"Regime forces have committed today a new crime against human and cultural heritage by targeting the minaret of the mosque and completely destroying it," the Local Coordination Committees said. The group released a photograph of the mosque without its signature minaret, apparently reduced to rubble.

The Syrian Coalition also blamed President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

  1. Atheist, me?

and same too with tyrants of any religion. I can assure you that Lenin and Stalin and co did not put their Atheism in quotation marks. They declared it as one of tyeir guiding principles.
We have to take care to give praise where it is due. Stalin defeated Hitler. Hitler invented the expressway. The Bolsheviks made Russia a world superpower. etc.
We can find the evil too just as easily.

None of us need God...this would has been horribly twisted by the religious...stifling science and knowledge for centuries...

Its all about control – for tyrants...for religions... its all the same. Do as I say or pay the price.

Many of todays atheists are humanists.... valuing individual freedom, free exchange of knowledge, advancement of the human condition......everything Religions fear because it makes them irrelevant. God – Allah ...is a way of making people act exactly how you want them to... kinda like tyrants.

See how you promote Atheism like a Jehovah Witness?
Which religion has been made obsolete by science so far or knowledge for that matter? If I remember well during Pol Pot and Mao's regimes intellectuals were killed, exiled or imprisoned. Even now religious persecution goes on in China. Why do you allow your Atheism to blind you like this?
That is what tyrants are made of. Thinking something you are involved in is superior to all other ways. If Atheists were a majority based on what I hear on here I don't think others have much hope in America. The Europeans may fare better but not u guys!

The Christian God's principle is simple-love your neighbor as yourself. This is your only proof that you love God!
What is wrong with this? A true Humanist will appreciate it!

Which religion has been made obsolete by science? – all of them. they are all made up. As far as Pol Pot, China- driven over that already...if you ignored my first post...running through what I suspect you know full well wont be a good use of time. Atheism is simply no believe in gods....it doesn't blind my to anything....it isn't a belief system. ....and at the twisting attempt...lol. –

      @ Faith

the burden of proof lies with you, not me. When all the facts about human development on this planet are arrayed out, your god topples like all the others. Everything about your religion – from its foundation – to its 500 or so denominations (don't like the doctrine or want to get rich on your own, no problem create you own!) screams FALSE. BTW- which of those is right?

Some added Islamic history we would like to forget:

As the koranic/mosque driven acts of terror and horror continue:

The Muslim Conquest of India – 11th to 18th century

■"The likely death toll is somewhere between 2 million and 80 million. The geometric mean of those two limits is 12.7 million. "

and the 19 million killed in the Mideast Slave Trade 7C-19C by Muslims.

      10) – Afghanistan: US troops 1,385 killed in action, 273 killed in non-combat situations as of 09/15/2011. Over 40,000 Afghan civilians killed due to the dark-age, koranic-driven Taliban acts of horror

      11) The killing of 13 citizen soldiers at Ft. Hood by a follower of the koran.

In the United Kingdom the event is referred to as the Lockerbie disaster, the Lockerbie bombing, or simply Lockerbie. Eleven townspeople were killed in Sherwood Crescent, where the plane's wings and fuel tanks plummeted in a fiery explosion, destroying several houses and leaving a huge crater, with debris causing damage to a number of buildings nearby. The 270 fatalities (259 on the plane, 11 in Lockerbie) were citizens of 21 nations.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public. Hena dropped after 70 and died a week later.

      23) "October 4, 2011, 100 die as a truck loaded with drums of fuel exploded Tuesday at the gate of compound housing several government ministries on a busy Mogadishu street. Would that suddenly make them "good" in your eyes? Or are you finally seeing the error in cherry picking some bad moments in history to make a sweeping generalization about an entire faith that has included billions of human beings?

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers, Flight 93 and the Pentagon?

And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-planned acts of terror and horror?

The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means.

Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein.

Until then, no Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

Conservative Jews in the USA have rewritten the Torah to reflect the myths therein.

Thomas Jefferson did an analogous rewrite of the NT. Ditto for the rewrite of the NT by the Jesus Seminarians, Professor JD Crossan in his over 20 books on the historical Jesus and related subjects and Professor Gerd Ludeman in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years.
" Thomas Jefferson omitted it (Revelation) along with most of the Biblical canon, from the Jefferson Bible, and wrote that at one time, he considered it (Revelation) as "merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams."

Stalin killed those people in the gulags -not Lenin....and he was responsible for around 20 million deaths ...not the 58 million (your 40 million +18 million).

And as you ve heard before im sure – Stalin did NOT kill people because they were religious– he killed them to prevent anyone from giving him the death he so richly deserved.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

I seem to recall that lots of great, old churches were destroyed on both sides during WWII, and that plenty of others were also lost during every war in Europe since they became more fashionable to build than temples. Just because somebody wouldn't dream of destroying his own holy place doesn't mean that he wouldn't destroy his enemies, and these are Muslims destroying the mosques of their enemies, yes?

@Larry, oh, I agree. There is no loyalty in war. But as this is a civil war between the citizens of that country, one assumes that all have worshiped at that particular mosque at one point or another, and did not care is this historic building were hit or not. This is what I meant about not caring about their own history.

But then we destroyed our own historic buildings during our own Civil (ha!) War, so I guess I'll just stick with this thought: war sucks.

Which God? "Akira, you have no idea, There are no words to describe it to you."

I know. I have been lucky enough to have never experienced it first hand; I never want to, either.
I am assuming you have; if you served in our armed forces, thank you.
If you escaped a worn-torn country, I am glad you have.
I am sorry for your experiences, either way.

Let me tell you a little story. Long ago, in the days when the buttery lobster walked the earth, he was ruled by the deeelicious crab. The buttery lobster was strangled by his own bib. Many people suspected the deeelicious crab, but he was nowhere....to be found....

Yes, Akira – I think he might have written the music too. But I think Hall wrote the lyrics – I could be wrong, but I saw something about that.
