Survey: Young Christians want marijuana legalized

By Dan Merica, CNN
[twitter-follow screen_name='DanMericaCNN']

Washington (CNN) – Half of young Christians have bucked the opinion of their older brethren and said they favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use, according to a recent poll.

Thirty-two percent of Christian’s aged 18-29 said they “strongly favor” legalization, while 18% said they “favor” the move, according to a Public Religion Research Institute survey released Thursday. Among Christian’s 65 and older, only 9% said they strongly favor legalization and 47% say they strongly oppose it.

Though the younger generations favor legalization, all Christians still lean toward keeping the drug illegal. While 39% of Christians say they favor or strongly favor legalization, 54% say they support keeping the drug illegal, according to the poll.

According to the poll, 45% of young Christians have “tried marijuana,” compared to 13% of Christian seniors who say they have.

“Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans who report they have ever tried marijuana support legalizing marijuana,” the report says. “While an identical number (65%) of Americans who report that they have not tried marijuana oppose its legalization.”

“Marijuana legalization connects to a broader generational story that we are seeing in religious culture,” said Robert P. Jones, CEO of the polling firm. “The younger, religious Americans are taking a lot of their cues from their generational cohorts. To be sure, they are colored by their religious affiliation.”

Jones continued: “The generational sea change on this issue is also shifting the ground inside churches.”

Marijuana, while a longtime political question, was thrust to the forefront of debate in 2012, when two states – Washington and Colorado – legalized use of the drug for recreational use. That same year, Oregon voted to keep marijuana illegal.

In Washington, legalization was a way to raise tax revenue. The Washington referendum called for a 25% tax rate imposed on the product three times: when the grower sells it to the processor, when the processor sells it to the retailer, and when the retailer sells it to the customer.

Marijuana use, according to the poll, is not seen as a sin by a majority of Americans.

Seventy percent of Americans said that recreational use of marijuana is not a sin, compared to 23% who said they believe using the drug is sinning. While most religious groups follow this trend, according to the poll, white evangelical Protestants are the most divided group, with 40% indicating using marijuana is a sin and 48% saying it is not.

These results have led poll organizers to believe marijuana use will continue to gain more acceptance in the coming years.

“Much like same sex marriage, what we are seeing here is generational replacement,” Jones said. “As more young Christians come to adulthood, they bring with them different experience and views.”

After electoral victories in November, the good news for those in favor of marijuana legalization keeps on coming. In early April, the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released a poll that found 52% of Americans favored legalization, compared to 45% who favored keeping marijuana illegal.

This was the first time in the history of the Pew poll that legalization has been in the majority.

The PRRI poll results are based on telephone conversations with a random sample of 1,000 adults. The conversations took place between April 17 and April 21.

I was against it at 18, did a school paper about it being so much worse than cigarettes because just 4 unfiltered joints were equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. Then I smoked a joint when I was 28 and realized "What the fvck was I thinking? There are people who smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, there's no waaaaay I could smoke 4 joints in a day..."

Now I understand the fact that if you haven't tried something then you have NO FRAME OF REFER ENCE and so you should either try it so you can talk about it or shut the heII up.

      @Timothy,
"There are people who smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, there's no waaaaay I could smoke 4 joints in a day...""

You're basing this off a single joint? Perhaps you need to consider your frame of reference as a one-time or limited use experience.

The Mullet is one of the few hairstyles that crosses social, political, country and gender lines.
It has variously been describes as:
      Achy Breaky Hair
      Ape Dr.ape
      Hockey Hair
      Sh.ong
      Norco Neckwarmer
      LPGA Hair
      The McGuyver
      Coupe Longeuil
      The Danish call it Bund.esliga-hår
The Colombian term is grena paisa
      The Czechs say co.lek
      The German word is "Vokuhila",
The Italian term is "capelli alla tedesca"
The Ja.panese term is urufu hea
      The Serbian's say "Tarzanka"

One of the more dangeous sports in which one can engage is hunting the Wild Mullet.
The prey are prone to vicious, if somewhat incoherent, attacks if they discover that they are being photographed.
The Mighty Mullet has a long and illustrious history.

Marijuana has no added chemicals unlike cigarettes, yes because you would inhale deeper of a Joint then a Cig the tar could effect you more, however like you say one does not smoke as much pot as they would cigs.

      Timothy,
rewrite that paper, only instead of using unfiltered pot, put it through a bong.
Or, better yet – ingest it. Avoid lung damage completely.

Don't you mean a long and lustrous history?

      April 25, 2013 at 4:13 pm |
    • meifumado

Good suggestions insightful, but for the max smoking pleasure and less damage to the lungs I would suggest you invest in a good vaporizer.
I would suggest the Volcano if you have a lot of money to spend ,it's the best on the market, but I would not advise a novice on getting one.
There's a nice little one called Pax, goes for about 225-250 bucks, It;s a great little device easy to use.and comes with a 10 year warranty

      April 25, 2013 at 4:27 pm |
    • Timothy

I have of course tried vaporizors and bongs of all sorts and have quite a collection, a large bong with an ash catcher is my personal preference. I will say that it's possible that because I waited till I was 28 I was uneffected by the stigmatized "pot apathy, lazy stoner syndrome" that I hear from just about every non-user and have only seen in some young 18 – 22 year old users. I guess it's hard enough to get up off the couch and decide what you want to do with your life after high school without having a purple bud'dy trying to keep you immobile. "Get through school, get a job so you can pay your own way and don't bogart your parents couch" is the advice I would give to any kid's wanting to start smoking.

" Surely they must do this quickly as the mark has already been put upon the land that He will return very soon."

I find it sad that so many Christians have this idea that it's okay to run the planet into the ground because God will save them, not everybody, just them, so they put their foot litterally on the gas to speed up the destruction of our planet because that is the self fullfilling prophecy they have been telling themselves. "As soon as it get's bad enough God will come and save us, so let's keep making it worse!!" That is why they are so scared of the rest of the world attacking them, it's because they know they are being total d i c k s to everybody else in the pursuit of their prophecy.

Jesus is counting the faithful on His fingers and toes and preparing a place in Heaven for those who follow His truth, which is the truth of God, who is Jesus. My camel-toe likes pancakes but the syrup caused quite a backup. It is time for you to start your walk with Jesus.

    Amen.

      Amen.

I think the important thing is the "young" aspect more than the "christian" part.
I would guess that young people's views on mj have more to do with it than how Christianity looks at it.

  20. Doc Vestibule

Some years ago, I was diagnosed with an h pylori negative, blocked duodenal ulcer.
It was extremely painful, especially after I ate. I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks.
I was prescribed various drugs that totalled over $120 a week and that had some rather unpleasant side effects.
As an independent contractor with no health insurance, I searched for a cheaper alternative and my doctor recommended marijuana.
For $10 a week, I got something that eased my pain and stimulated my appet.ite with comparatively few side effects.
My employers (the Department of National Defense) never had a complaint about my performance or professionalism.
After a few months, my malady subsided and I stopped smoking with no reprecussions or withdrawal symptoms.

Many stories like yours out there Doc and I'm glad you pulled through ok.
The USA needs to wake up and legalize industrial Hemp and medicinal Marijuana, Tax it and BAM economy fixed.

    • Apple Bush

Medical Mary Jane (I can't spell Marijuana) is legal where I live. They will just come to your house, open a case full of all kinds of awsome weed and let you pick. That is how it should be only it should be legal in general. The so-called doctors that issue your Medicical Chronic license are a joke but the system works.

    • lionlylamb

      Doc V,

Medicinal usages of reefer have now a historical characteristic from which to parlor and banter upon. Imagine all the medicinal maladies and physical ills all wiped away by a simple herb or weed! The recreational user might never have many medicinal maladies or physical illnesses by which reefer does cure. I say, "Legalizing reefer is the first step to recreational usages of all mannerisms of today's now illegally used substances."

I smoke filtered cigars because the prices of cigarettes is too damn high to wantonly buy them. $50 plus for a carton of cigarettes will buy me 5 cartons of filtered cigars. If reefer were legalized, I would quit smoking tobacco products completely! I would most likely use reefer in baking and limit my use of smoking it.

      April 25, 2013 at 2:56 pm |
    • meifumado

Wait.... Lionly are we in agreement here on legalizing marijuana?
