Rainn Wilson has faith in life after 'The Office'

(CNN) - Dwight K. Schrute was many things: paper salesman, beet farmer, lovable dork. Though he came from Amish stock, Schrute showed more interest in martial arts than Bibles and buggies.

But the man who played Schrute for nine years calls religion central to his life, and as Rainn Wilson transitions to life after “The Office,” his Baha’i faith is taking center stage.

Wilson is on the forefront of a campaign called “Five Years Too Many” that calls for the release of seven Baha’i volunteer leaders who have been imprisoned in Iran for the past five years.

“People need to know that this has happened and that this is happening and they don't,” Wilson said. “There are Baha'is rotting in jail on a 20-year sentence on trumped up charges simply because they have a certain set of faith beliefs that run against the theocracy in Iran."

The move from actor to advocate for a world religion is a big shift for Wilson. After a failed movie career and a lot of soul searching he is at peace with his television success and knows that his career might have peaked with “The Office,” which ends next Thursday after nine years on the air.

“It is probable that this was the high point in my career and the most awesome thing I'll ever be involved in,” Wilson told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an interview. “I just feel tremendous gratitude.”

These days, Wilson barely resembles his onscreen character. He sports a beard with a surprising amount of gray hair sprinkled throughout. His hair was mussed and he didn’t a wear brown suit and a yellow shirt. His were glasses more LA hipster than Scranton nerd. He’s ambivalent about life after “The Office.”

“It's bittersweet. I love the people there so much. At the same time, it was time for it to go away.”

From famous to influential

Despite being the most famous Baha’i in America, Wilson had been a reluctant spokesman for the faith. In a meeting with religion reporters in 2010, Wilson said it’s somewhat “sad” that a “big dorky” guy has become the faith’s most recognizable face, at least in the United States.

Still, Wilson has nothing but praise for the “beautiful faith I grew up in.”

Baha’is believe there is one God who has sent down numerous messengers, including Jesus, the Buddha, Krishna, Moses, Mohammad and Baha’u’llah, whom they believe is the most recent divine messenger.

The teachings of Baha’u’llah, who was born in Iran in 1817 but was exiled from his homeland, form the foundation of the Baha’i faith. He died in 1892.

Globally there are 5 million Baha’is in more than 200 countries, including 170,000 in the United States, according to the faith’s leaders.

Like other world religions, the Baha’i faith grew during the social tumult and soul searching of the 1960s.

But if the best way for a religion to grow is a healthy combination of converts and babies, Baha’is are doubly disadvantaged. Members of the faith are forbidden from proselytizing and babies born to Baha'i parents are not automatically considered adherents.

While Bahai’s don’t aggressively seek converts, they are desperately trying to drum up support for their persecuted fellow believers in Iran.

Baha’i leaders say the seven were taken into custody in May 2008. In August 2010 they were sentenced to 20 years each in prison for espionage, propaganda against the Islamic republic and the establishment of an illegal administration.

The U.S. State Department and human rights groups have condemned Iran’s treatment of Baha'is.

"In addition to killings, executions, and arrests, Baha’is suffered frequent government harassment and persecution, and their property rights generally were disregarded," the State Department wrote in a 2012 report.

One of the imprisoned leaders is Fariba Kamalabadi. Her brother, Iraj Kamalabadi, told CNN, “It has been very difficult for them to spend five years of their prime time in prison, even a minute of it was unnecessary and too many.”

Hollywood’s most famous atheist

Wilson is a person of faith, but he has Hollywood’s most famous atheist to thank for his rise to stardom.

The “The Office” was created by British comedian Ricky Gervais and first aired on the BBC. Gervais, an avowed atheist, regularly and caustically skewers religions of all kinds.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“I respect his beliefs,” Wilson said, while acknowledging that Gervais might not respect his. “I thank him for creating ‘The Office’ though. Because I wouldn't have a job without that and he's a brilliant mind.”

As “The Office” comes to an end, Wilson said he plans to travel with his wife and young son. He knows that he may never again get a role as good as Dwight Schrute. But he’s at peace with that, in part because of his Baha’i faith.

“My faith grounds me and centers me and gives me focus, and I'm very grateful for that.”

    Prayer changes things,

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

    • Really?

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie!

    • Just think a bit.

If God works in mysterious ways, then why do faith healers have such a limited view of how prayer should work? Why does it have to be some magical spontaneous cure? What if all the praying caused God to orchestrate advancements in medical care? Couldn't the "mysterious ways" in which God works include guiding an atheist doctor to develop a new antibiotic?

It reminds me of the old story of the person who is drowning but refuses to get on the boat saying, "No thanks, God will save me!" He gets before his creator and asks why he was left to die. God says "What do you mean, I sent you a boat!."

Without God there would still be nothingness, an emptied void. But God said, "Let there be light" and bang, there was light! The first bang of light did shake up the emptied void and brought forth a supplication of restrained orderliness yet fraught with formlessness and dysfunctional vespers. God looked deeply into the very depths of the cosmologically centered abatements and saw Life abound with abundances. God called this life God's children and God watched in awe and wonder as God's children of the atomic worlds did bring forth an abundance of living things upon the celestial chasms wherever was made possible within all places celestially so ordained. To God, only a few days have gone by but for God's children, billions of years passed by.

Thus the atomized heavens and the celestial heaven were made and fermented for God's delightedness. God was and still is above all celestial and atomic constraints. God lives above and beyond celestial constraints and is living in the above and beyond of all realms of cosmologic dimensions. For a billion of mankind's years is but as a day for God and a day for mankind is as a billion years for God's children who live within and upon the atomized cosmologies. The triune unity of cosmologic order was made manifest and cannot be altered.

I knew you were an old fart, LL, but surely not old enough to have been there back then. How do you know what happened? What are "dysfunctional vespers"? Do you even know what "vespers" are?

      May 10, 2013 at 7:38 pm |

I know that vespers relate to prayer and dysfunctional vespers equates to misguided prayer.

"Vespers" refer to evening prayer, LL. I have no idea what "misguided prayer" might mean, and I'll bet you don't either. You just like the sounds of words; their meaning is irrelevant to you. Don't expect anyone to understand your drivel if you can't manage to use words that mean something to everyone who reads them. Your use of them is unintelligible.

  7. Reality

A quick search will put the kibosh on any group calling themselves a religion.

    For example:

"In the Bahá'í Faith, religious history is seen to have unfolded through a series of divine messengers, each of whom established a religion that was suited to the needs of the time and the capacity of the people. These messengers have included Abrahamic figures as well as Dharmic ones – Krishna, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, and others. For Bahá'ís, the most recent messengers are the Báb and Bahá'u'lláh. In Bahá'í belief, each consecutive messenger prophesied of messengers to follow, and Bahá'u'lláh's life and teachings fulfilled the end-time promises of previous scriptures."

Just too much blending to give any credence to the Baha'i Faith plus the "kiboshing" of many components of this blend as noted previously puts a very BIG NO all over it.

There are those amongst us who may understand that the kingdom domains of God lays deeply confined inside all celestially contained Life manifestations. We are living within the celestial constraints of creation and all of Godliness resides deeply upon the atomic cosmologies of all living celestial manifestations. Two divisional chasms united and living as one. The atomic chasms and the celestial chasms did bring about cellular chasms, the third step of cosmological ordainments to bridge the gaps between what lays inside the atomic cosmos and Life that lives upon the celestial cosmos.

Societal classifications become moot points within kempt and cultured generalizations. The most high God of All Creations great and small cannot be upset by fragmentations of socially disfigured lemon-aide sales-folk ever scratching and clawing upon the sensitive legs of those tempered and unmoving by their spirit orientated views. My beliefs on God and God's kingdom domains will never be bent nor swayed by tawdry fragments of socialized dysentery.

Atheisms are grown out of unstable dissention. They seem to flourish quite well wherever crowds gather. Scurry though they do whenever they’re being told that Atheisms are as maintaining 'conditioned sets of belief' embellishing upon questionable character analysis and defiantly throwing crusade after crusade of questioned reproaching stances. I see most atheists as being argumentative, unkind, and unpleasant whenever religious perceptivity rises up the flagpole to be seen from afar off.

Seek first the kingdom domains of God and once your vision settles, you will know that one's body is where the kingdom domains of God are to be found. For: the ‘depths of atomized inwardness’ are as far away as the outward distant stars in the night skies. Either direction is as stained evolutions upon the inner and outer chasms of all issues cosmological. This earth of one's birth is a celestial wonder and our bodies are made wondrous by the evolutionary trails as being trailering wanderings of atomized cosmological constructs of cellular conditionings made manifested and is a testimonial to all celestial manifestations seeded within living cellular combinations of atomized cloisters.

Facts you say? What came first? The plants' seeds or the plants? Just exactly how could plants come into being without firstly being created from seeds? If seeds were first then what created these seeds? Is it too hard to fathom out that deep within the cosmos of the atomic cloisters there lives Life? Could such finite Life of smallness really be at the helms of all celestially based life formations? I'm no educator nor do I hold up any degree. Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

      By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

“Even with all their threats of eternal damnation and soul roasting, Christian missionaries have run across some who were not so quick to swallow their drivel. Pleasure and pain, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. So, when missionaries ventured to Alaska and warned the Eskimos of the horrors of Hell and the blazing lake of fire awaiting transgressors, they eagerly asked: "How do we get there?"!”

Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

1Corinthians 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building.

The kingdom domains of God are found within all celestial formations of Life. Life is in manifestations of all things celestially formed and we are God's buildings for God, God's families and all Godly brethren to take safe harborages deeply seeded upon the insides of all living things celestially formed and maintained thru God's powers that will ever be.

When one talks about the scientific theorem of our evolutionary trails, just exactly how did the animals branch away from vegetation or plant life? Where exactly are these missing links? The same can be asked regarding insects and mammals. Could it be said that there were no missing links for the establishments of plant life and mammalians and insects? Could it be reckoned that life's soups within all mannerisms of celestial life formations were so established distant and apart from each other's genetic underpinnings? The established moments of Creationism is a perceptivity of base rooted thoughts underlying testimonial concepts such as varied cosmological issues of atomized and celestial and even cellular relationships unto self-similar variations of outward perplexities upon all celestial shorelines making due notes upon cellular divisions perceptive congenialities. Which came first, the plant seeds or the plants?
