Nun, two others face decades in prison for nuclear site breach

By Tricia Escobedo, CNN

(CNN) - A nun and two peace activists could spend the rest of their lives in federal prison after being convicted of breaching one of the nation's most secure nuclear facilities.

After two days of testimony, a federal jury in Knoxville, Tennessee, found Sister Megan Rice, 83; Greg Boertje-Obed, 57; and Michael Walli, 63, guilty of destroying U.S. government property and depredation against federal property exceeding $1,000.

That could mean up to 30 years in prison, according to WATE, CNN's affiliate in Knoxville.

The three are scheduled to be sentenced on September 23.

When the guilty verdict was read Wednesday evening, the three defendants appeared content, even singing along with protest hymns before they were taken into custody, according to WATE.

The fact that they are elderly moves you to no compassion whatsoever? Really? Did you suffer a temporal lobe injury at some point?

Bernie Madoff is elderly, too. Your point?

Why would you compare three hippie protestors to Madoff?

The message the politicians are sending to America. We will make you pay for our crimes and negligence.

Accountability will be the issue that starts the next US revolution

Here is punishment that fits the crime:
The nun and two others are sentenced to protest in future only by singing hymns.
    Prison sentence? No! No!
    Voice lessons?-Yes!!

From what I've read about this incident, they broke thru 3 fences w/bolt cutters & then set up their protest signs! They also spray painted some stuff! Negligible criminal or religious behavior, more Woodstock/hippie hold-overs! Punishment of 30 years is way too harsh; did they kill some1? The security team are the 1's who need to be investigated! W/such laxness they're lucky they only encountered the hippie nun & her Woodstock co-horts!!

This isn't a belief issue, it;s a national security issue. I think some heads should roll, that is heads in security. This should have never happened, however perhaps it was good that only harmless people breached the security. I really don't think the crime of these three was so very great, 30 years is too much for so little. It's security that should pay the biggest price.

Yap, yap, yap/ This person spams this to almost every article regarding religion. It gets old and adds nothing to the discussion.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

    • Really?

"Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things"

That's why the data, has shown that atheists have happier and healthier lives than conservative Christians. Your post is built on a lie!

  16. Dumitru Duduman's vision for America

Reminds me of this excerpt from one of Dumitru Duduman:
He said, "Remember this, Dumitru. The Russian spies have discovered where the nuclear warehouses are in America. When the Americans will think that it is peace and safety – from the middle of the country, some of the people will start fighting against the government. The government will be busy with internal problems. Then from the ocean, from Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico,,.." (He told me two other countries, but I didn't remember what they were.) "...they will bomb the nuclear warehouses. When they explode, America will burn!"

Islam is the foundation of the American Constipation. Americans are very constipated, that is why they walk around with tractor tires instead of waist and hips in their bodies. The great American Constipation will bring down this nation, that Constipation is due to the sin of Gluttony. Americans are gluttons.

We have laws and no one is above these laws. Believing in some mythical god does not give you a free pass to put the rest of at risk. Five years with time off for good behavior and a mandatory course in 21st century rational thinking!!!

Bill, it had nothing to do with contraception or abortion, so no. The Vatican won't care about this.

Oh, well, doesn't appear to be important, as 12 states now have approved gay marriage.

breaching of no clear site, was about homegrown terrorism, Islam, Sufi, Salafi or teachings of son of Muhammad Baba, it was never about religion or peace, or truth absolute, 360*, or power to the people, so much so, word religion does not exist in Latin language or in holy Quran, but Thin Allah, consti tution of all troubles, other wise known as Law of nature in middle east, guilty of committing crime against humanity, deserves life in prison, nothing less

Using a derogatory word, Truth Prevails that insults people with mental and physical challenges, applying it to a religion you don't care for, and then throwing it at an 83 year old speaks volumes about your character.
Quite frankly I'd expect better from an atheist. Shame on you.

    Takes significant courage!

They are lucky the right wing types didn't kill them as "Terrorists"

Strange how both in the secular and religious communities, I see those on the left finally rising up to challenge the rightward march of our military and police forces.

Lets see the sentence. The left would make her a martyr if they give her more than 30 dyas!
