Vatican swaps Old Masters for modernity with Venice Biennale debut

By Bryony Jones, CNN

(CNN) - Its art collection is the envy of galleries the world over, but until now the Vatican has been better known for Renaissance masterpieces rather than hip modernist artworks.

That may be about to change: the home of the Catholic Church has announced it will exhibit at the ultra-fashionable Venice Biennale for the first time later this year.

In a bold move away from the works of Michelangelo, Rafael and Giotto for which it is renowned, the Holy See picked Italian new media art collective Studio Azzurro, Czech-French photographer Josef Koudelka, and Australian-born U.S. painter Lawrence Carroll to interpret its chosen theme.

But the subject itself is one of the oldest and most traditional: the pavilion, inspired by Genesis, the first book of the Bible, is entitled "In the Beginning."

You know what never happens in here? No one ever quotes the bible. I was just saying the other day "You know what would be great, on pretty much EVERY article? Someone to respond with maybe a bible quote or three." And lo and behold, here you are.

Thanks, Ben. No one ever quotes the bible anymore.

sam, damn straight. It would be a bonus for all of us if John 3:16 were quoted more often too. Can't get enough John 3:16.

RIGHT, Apple? It is just really thoughtful to have bible quotes dropped without any other commentary, too, no thoughts, just quotes. I feel like it really connects you with the person who's posting, really lets you know where they're coming from.

I always wonder why an omnipotent, ominscient, and omnipresent god couldn't find a better way to deal with whatever it didn't like about its creation; it's almost as if its actions are the imaginings of ancient tribes ruled by superstitions.

“Most people, if they had really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise.
“At present we are on the outside… the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the pleasures we see. But all the pages of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always be so. Someday, God willing, we shall get “in”… We will put on glory… that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch.
We do not want to merely “see” beauty–though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words–to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.
    –C.S Lewis

  13. The Message

    A sermon by Billy Graham
The Bible says, “He that hardeneth his heart, being often reproved, shall suddenly be cut off and not without remedy” [see Proverbs 29:1].

You never know. To some of you who go out on the slick highways this afternoon, this may be the last sermon you will ever hear. In every crusade we have ever conducted anywhere, there have been people who have come to the meeting in good health and never came back because they were dead in the next few hours through an accident, or a heart attack, or something else.

We never know when our moment is coming. Maybe God spoke to you this afternoon, and your heart is in danger of being hardened. Some of you are older people; some of you are younger people. The Bible says once you hear the Gospel and do nothing about it, you are in danger of being hardening your heart.

But, last of all, there were some that made a decision [see Acts 17:34]. They received Christ and went their way rejoicing. I am going to ask you today to receive Him. I am not asking you this afternoon to join some special church. I’m asking you today to give your life to Christ.

You may be a member of a choir. I don’t know who you are or what you are, but you want to give your life to Christ on this opening Sunday afternoon. I’m going to ask you to do a hard thing, because coming to Christ is not easy. So many people have made it too easy. Jesus went to the cross and died in your place. Certainly, you can come a few steps from where you are sitting and stand here, quietly and reverently, and with bowed head. And say, “I need God; I need Christ. I want to be forgiven of my sins. I want a new life, and I want to start a new direction today.”

As for the purpose of my life, given that I don't accept your concept or any other concept of an after life, the purpose of my life is to live the best possible life now...to be happy and make others happy, to love and be loved, to experience all I can, to do what I can to better this world.

"the purpose of my life is to live the best possible life now...to be happy and make others happy, to love and be loved, to experience all I can, to do what I can to better this world."

=>Name calling Christians on a blog, is that the best possible life now?
=>To love and make others happy? ok if we appreciate our God whom we love being insulted
=>all the experiences you can have amount to meaningless exchanges of chemicals that give an illusion if life is simply an accident without purpose outside of itself.
See, what the original post was about was an experience that you and Steve reject. So basically you want to experience what you want to experience. That is selfish desire. That is what tore Eve from the garden and what tears you from meeting you own stated meaning in life "to experience all you can"

      May 14, 2013 at 7:40 pm |
    • Katy A.

Okay, I tried. You say you're a loving person? Then what are you doing here? This is a hater place.
Crazy people are sick in the head. You castigate them for being sick when it really is not their fault. Why?
You must need to just lash out at cripples. I hope you feel good about that. It seems you do.

    • fred

      Truth Prevails 🙂
Hope in the promise offered to Able, Seth, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph etc is an experience that will bring about that which you claim brings meaning to existence. I understand you once were a believer however, you cannot hold the promise of God in your heart and walk away from it. That promise is overpowering and opens a field of view not available to Steve. It is the power and joy that comes with the presence of God. The promise is a new heaven and a new earth. The promise is renewal now and eternal.
Look around you and see the signs of renewal. See the signs of creation that are beyond wonder forever extending and bringing forth newness in life. When a flower dies it is not the end but the beginning of a field of beauty that reaches to the sun in constant renewal. Even our universe is constantly expanding at an ever increasing pace to new horizons. 🙂

You could have just said you didn't know.

      May 14, 2013 at 8:24 pm |
    • fred

      Why Destroy?
God cannot be destroyed because God simply is. Eternal presence by definition cannot be destroyed. Even the Bible which hints at a prior catastrophic battle of the principalities between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 reveals the result was this creation we now experience and on the 7th day God rested as the creation was very good.
When Satan did every thing possible to destroy Christ it turned out to be Gods plan of redemption at the cross. Jesus said it is finished. Death has no sting for the saved who believe in Christ as it is a finished work.
In the last 2,000 years we have been in the age of the church and as your posts so well reflect you want to destroy the church. That you may be successful at because it will usher in the new heaven and the new earth.
How about that God who continues to amaze and baffle us with wonder! God bless you

fred, I don't think you have much grasp of what you are talking about. If a god is really a god, then why is Satan such a problem for it to just deal with.

On a another subject that you have tried to step into, how is a sacrifice/redemption exercise a requirement for healing or removing anything, for a god? That idea is specious anyway, and probably just was stolen by Christianity from some of the early blood cults that it is loosely based on.

    • fred

Satan is not a problem for God as witnessed by the fact Satan could do nothing to keep the plan of salvation from running its course. All Satan did with all that evil was to bring out the goodness in souls that truly belong to God. This was the culmination of mans free will, Satans free will doing everything imaginable yet the end result is all things work for the good of those who are in Christ.

Salvation is necessary because mans free will chose desire over God rejecting that which God created for man. God is perfect infinite goodness and perfect justice. God is not departmentalized so goodness and justice are one with God. Perfect goodness can only be reconciled with perfect justice through atonement. Jesus sacrificed himself so that goodness if fully satisfied in our salvation and justice is fully satisfied in the price paid for us by Jesus.

    • Destroy all religion NOW

fred, I cannot destroy something that doesn't exist, such as your puling god who can't do anything real.
But I can destroy your fantasy-world in many different ways, since that DOES exist inside your head.
There is nothing you can say or do, no matter how big and wonderful your fantasy father-figure is supposed to be, that will make him real.
If he can't get in touch with anyone or do anything, what makes you think he actually exists? Because he doesn't.

Fred: Yes, we reject your god just as we reject all gods. Insulting something that can't be shown to exist is not much of an insult though nor does it equate to not being a loving person. In the end we're not too worried because you have no way of knowing what, if anything awaits you in the end and as far as it is known, once death takes over there is nothing more.

Katy: Great judgement little girl. You're not worth any more of my time or that of anyone else..3 comments made by you and you look like a supporter of the christards..way to be a POE.

      Truth Prevails 🙂
“ we reject your god just as we reject all gods.”
=>You are without evidence or any scientific support whatsoever to conclude existence is an accident. This means you have in fact established your belief and or rejection of God on faith in your own construct of purpose. Perhaps you subconsciously find the need to support Steve’s unfounded beliefs yet the bottom line is that you exhibit faith. Faith in Steve’s construct of meaning or purpose for an accidental existence or your own empty purpose (empty as without cause for existence there can be no purpose) still forms your core belief. You can deny God but you cannot deny you believe.

“Insulting something that can't be shown to exist is not much of an insult”
=>Christ is very personal to a believer and is loved as much as one would love another that has been with them through thick or thin. Yes it is an insult and the insults and mocking are clear signs of two types of souls that have eternal destiny. Perhaps if Jesus saved your life and your family (real or imagined) you would also be sad when Jesus is attacked without cause.

“nor does it equate to not being a loving person.”
=>If I began to smear a group of cat lovers that think the world of their cats that is not a loving person because I am trying to hurt and say hurtful things.

“once death takes over there is nothing more.”
=>all things are created or are the result of created things. Organic matter decomposes and certain chemical reactions cease but life was never in the physical as the physical was simply a manifestation of the life. Your life is not your flesh and bones but the life force that is you. You children’s is not the chemical reactions on organic matter but the life force we call essence. Self awareness alone should make it obvious that your life force is part of something much greater than the physical.

  17. Reality

    From the article:

"But the subject itself is one of the oldest and most traditional: the pavilion, inspired by Genesis, the first book of the Bible, is ent-itled "In the Beginning."

Now for some 21st century reality:

Adam and Eve are myths making original sin mythological and Christian Baptism symbolic. (Also taught in graduate theology classes at many major Catholic universities).

    Added details-

Lets begin at the “beginning” with just a few pages from the Book i.e. Genesis and the creation of “Creation” without any need to read the OT cover to cover. Whoever the Jewish scribes were, it has been shown that “they were mostly religious propagandists who didn’t let historical truth get in the way of a (morally or theologically) good story.” (Noah is another great “good” story). For example, even the Catholic Church teaches the mythical/fictional nature of Adam and Eve and the magical garden. It also shows that in 900 BC, Jewish scribes were quite good at writing fictional and/or embellished accounts.

The descendants of the Scribes, continued the work of their predecessors. And their work seems to have taken another branch after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD. Were Matthew, Mark, Luke and John descendents of these OT scribles? And Paul definitely had a “scribable influence” in his early years in Jerusalem. Seems plausible !!! Lets face it, the historical Jesus with his parables and embellished experiences provided a great basis for a better, more rationale religion. It just needed some upgrading to keep pace with Greek and Roman mythology.

And as per National Geographic's Genographic project:

" DNA studies suggest that all humans today descend from a group of African ancestors who about 60,000 years ago began a remarkable journey. Follow the journey from them to you as written in your genes”.

"Adam" is the common male ancestor of every living man. He lived in Africa some 60,000 years ago, which means that all humans lived in Africa at least at that time.

Unlike his Biblical namesake, this Adam was not the only man alive in his era. Rather, he is unique because his descendents are the only ones to survive.

It is important to note that Adam does not literally represent the first human. He is the coalescence point of all the genetic diversity."

o More details from National Geographic's Genographic project: https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/

"Our spe-cies is an African one: Africa is where we first ev-olved, and where we have spent the majority of our time on Earth. The earliest fos-sils of recognizably modern Ho-mo sapiens appear in the fossil record at Omo Kibish in Ethiopia, around 200,000 years ago. Although earlier fossils may be found over the coming years, this is our best understanding of when and approximately where we originated.

According to the genetic and paleontological record, we only started to leave Africa between 60,000 and 70,000 years ago. What set this in motion is uncertain, but we think it has something to do with major climatic shifts that were happening around that time—a sudden cooling in the Earth’s climate driven by the onset of one of the worst parts of the last Ice Age. This cold snap would have made life difficult for our African ancestors, and the genetic evidence points to a sharp reduction in population size around this time. In fact, the human population likely dropped to fewer than 10,000. We were holding on by a thread.

Once the climate started to improve, after 70,000 years ago, we came back from this near-extinction event. The population expanded, and some intrepid explorers ventured beyond Africa. The earliest people to colonize the Eurasian landma-ss likely did so across the Bab-al-Mandab Strait separating present-day Yemen from Djibouti. These early beachcombers expanded rapidly along the coast to India, and reached Southeast Asia and Australia by 50,000 years ago. The first great foray of our species beyond Africa had led us all the way across the globe."

And for $199 and a DNA mouth swab:

"Included in the markers we will test for is a subset that scientists have recently determined to be from our h-ominin cousins, Neanderthals and the newly discovered Denisovans, who split from our lineage around 500,000 years ago. As modern humans were first migrating out of Africa more than 60,000 years ago, Neanderthals and Denisovans were still alive and well in Eurasia. It seems that our ancestors met, leaving a small genetic trace of these ancient relatives in our DNA. With Geno 2.0, you will learn if you have any Neanderthal or Denisovan DNA in your genome."
