End times for doomsday-linked radio network?

By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

(CNN) - Dealing with a struggling radio business – this wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. By all his calculations, Harold Camping expected to be nearly two years into his Rapture revelry, hanging in heaven with God and the select others who’d been saved.

But when his predicted and vastly promoted May 21, 2011, Day of Rapture came and went, and the end of the world on October 21, 2011, didn’t pan out either, Camping lost his doomsday mojo. It didn’t help that he had another knock against him, having made a similar failed prophecy back in 1994.

By March 2012, the degreed engineer who’s spent more than a half-century studying the Bible admitted mistakes. He vowed to back off from the prediction business.

Now it seems Family Radio, the nonprofit Christian radio broadcasting network Camping started in 1959, may be foundering, according to an investigative story recently published in the Contra Costa Times.

Financial documents show that Family Radio's assets dropped by more than $105 million in less than five years, despite an influx of $85 million in donations over that time, the California newspaper reported. This, of course, was during the big push to spread the news about the end that wasn’t. The paper also said donations have tumbled nearly 70%  since May 21, 2011, spawning layoffs of longtime employees. And saddled with loans, a dwindling cash flow and alleged mismanagement, the network was reportedly forced to sell off its three biggest stations.

“You eliminate those three (FM stations) and, ultimately, the rest of it dies,” former employee Matt Tuter told the Contra Costa Times. “I believe they are killing it off.”

All of these financial struggles, however, come as the network grapples with losing the voice of its biggest star - Camping himself. He suffered a stroke in June 2011. And though he remains involved and still serves as the network's president, the flagship show he hosted, "Open Forum," is only running previously recorded programs.

It was through Family Radio – and its multitude of U.S. stations, satellite feeds, shortwave radio use, Internet reach and translation machine – that Camping’s teachings and 2011 predictions spread across the globe. His doomsday message was bolstered by a massive billboard campaign at a reported price tag of $5 million. There were also initiatives like Project Caravan, which dispatched teams of volunteers in RVs to warn the people.

CNN hopped on board one caravan and traveled with faithful ambassadors who’d given up everything for this cause.

The coordinator for Project Caravan, Ted Kim, left Family Radio soon after May 21, 2011. Once his ambassadors - still around and not raptured - had a place to go, he told CNN, his work was done.

Even though he doesn't work there anymore, that doesn’t mean he’s lost faith in the mission. He still believes spiritual judgment occurred in 2011 and that the world’s physical destruction is near.

Kim, who is now home schooling his children and caring for his mother, suspects the supporters who fell away had erroneously put more stock in Camping than they’d put in the Bible or God himself.

But Tuter, the former employee who served at Camping’s side for years before he was fired in 2012, suggested to the Contra Costa Times that a demise of Family Radio may be deliberate. He said Camping made it clear to him in 1996 that he wanted the network to die when he did.

"He was very specific he did not want it to continue," Tuter told the newspaper. He said Camping confided in him a week before going into heart surgery: "God raised up Family Radio just as a platform for me!"

Tom Evans, who has taken over the network’s day-to-day reins since Camping suffered that stroke, could not be reached by CNN for comment. But he offered the newspaper a very different perspective than Tuter's. Evans said he hopes that Family Radio can move forward, leaving this end-of-the-world banter behind it.

“We want to be a comfort and reminder of God’s strength and mercy,” he said. “In the end, our founding mission is to proclaim the word of God.”

That mission, coupled with the network’s recent history, may not make them boom like they once did. But to Evans and those who are keeping the faith, neither should it portend doom.

Bob- by the way when you rip scripture out of context and misinterpret the scripture, you are no better than Harold Camping who has been ripping scripture out its context for years and not rightly dividing the truth. Be careful who you listen to and stereotype us with. Not all Christians are like Harold Camping...

      @ Russ:

Bob is anti-Christian. He's not even asking for anyone to try and convince him, but instead has made up his mind to not believe.

I used to be a bit a like him: used specific scripture to prove my point against what i thought was God, and nothing else. It's vanity and pride that did it for me, and from the looks of Bob's message, he's no different than I was before I accepted Jesus as my savior.

I pray that The Lord touches Bob's heart and opens his eyes to the Truth as well.

      In His Love, Juanito.

I hate to break it to ya. The bible is fiction. Bob or anyone else for that matter can interpret it any way they want. If God is upset let him/her do something about it.

You said, "I used to be a bit a like him"
Could you go back to believing the Tooth Fairy is real? The Easter Bunny, perhaps? Any imaginary creature? If you can't, then I doubt very much that you were ever anything remotely like Bob.

Ah, Russ the coward, you greasy slimeball, back again are you.... Read these direct quotes from your book of nasty, and this time try to comprehend how "context" and "interpretation" are addressed in the following.

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

      Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a much better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement.

      Ken Margo,

You say that about the Bible as if you have studied it in-depth. Until you have at least given time to studying the Bible in-depth and I do not mean just sitting down and taking it at surface meaning, but really digging into it and studying it in context, then you cannot make that judgment call. That is like saying something is good or bad without even having seen it, tested it out, or even remotely learned how it works....

I've never read comic books. I know the characters are not real. I Base my opinion on what religious people like you say. Everything you say makes zero sense. The god you describe seems to be like a person. In that case he/she is no better than me.

      @ LinCA:

Actually, I have a lot in common with Bob, and with you as well. We are all on this site, and are offering our beliefs without much asking for it!

I accept being humiliated for believing as Christ did say that would happen to those who die(see that? You're helping to fulfill prophesy!). Lets see if Bob can find THAT in scripture, too!

But I stopped humiliating those I don't agree with because every time it starts to surface, I come right back to fact that Jesus loves you, Bob, me and everyone else, and died for our salvation.

He loves ya bunches, LinCA, and wants you to let Him into your life.

Just open the door and let Him in!

In His indescribable, intense and glorious love, Juanito.

Russ, If bible study helps you be a better person, fine. Remember that many don't need a religion to lead good lives. And that we don't need or want your attempts to proselytize.

      @Juanito

You said, "I accept being humiliated for believing as Christ did say that would happen to those who die(see that? You're helping to fulfill prophesy!)."
There is nothing better to keep the sheeple believing than predicting the inevitable. You deserve the same ridicule as adults who still have imaginary friends.

You said, "But I stopped humiliating those I don't agree with because every time it starts to surface, I come right back to fact that Jesus loves you, Bob, me and everyone else, and died for our salvation."
Feel free to remain ignorant and believe your fairy tale.

You said, "He loves ya bunches, LinCA, and wants you to let Him into your life."
Since it exists nowhere except in your mind, I doubt that very much.

You said, "Just open the door and let Him in!"
Sorry, I value my sanity too much to voluntarily surrender it.

      Russ,

It is always enjoyable to hear you explain you have to best understanding of bible scripture and context....and yet I have no confidence yours is any better than anyone elses because you have no way to demonstrate you do.

Fine Russ, in what context is it o.k. to kill children, and all of the women who have slept with a man?

      May 17, 2013 at 12:47 pm |
    • Jump to Conclusions...

@Russ – "You say that about the Bible as if you have studied it in-depth." Yes, as studies have shown, non-believers and atheists are more knowledgeable about the bible than believers.

"Until you have at least given time to studying the Bible in-depth and I do not mean just sitting down and taking it at surface meaning, but really digging into it and studying it in context, then you cannot make that judgment call." It's the indepth study and having read it cover to cover more than 3 times that has brought me to my conclusion that you and your book are full of feces.

"That is like saying something is good or bad without even having seen it, tested it out, or even remotely learned how it works...." Seen it, tested it out and found it wanting. What you want people to do is read the parts your Church/congregation/parish have highlit and focus on about being good and helpful and unselfish which are positives the bible does contain, but then ignore the rest of the vile book that includes in c est, infantacide, condones slavery, murder of disobedient children and blood sacrafice along with an invented creation story that does not ring true when looked at through the lens of archeological and geological history.

      May 17, 2013 at 2:29 pm |
  2. Russ

Bob – your interpretation is exactly what happens when someone approaches the Bible with no idea what they are reading and rips Scripture out of its context. A very very uneducated attempt at interpreting the Bible. I respect your opinion, but out of respect for those of us who have committed our lives to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, please go back and study the scripture and come back when you have interpreted scripture within its context to make your point...

Ah, Russ the coward, back again, are you, you greasy slimeball...OK, again, read these direct quotes over, and read again, and try to comprehend that I've already addressed your "interpretation" and "context" nonsense.

Ridiculous. Even scholars who spend their entire lives studying scripture WITH fervent belief and (supposedly) the magic decoder ring of the Holy Spirit disagree on interpretation.

You LIE to say that people who study scripture sincerely and with faith "know" the correct interpretation. And besides, there is no way to verify which interpretation is correct. It's all just mere opinion and ego-driven philosophy.

Harold Camping is a fraud but believers in God are not alone. "My understanding of the Scriptures has been made simple by the person of Christ." Bono U2..."There are four questions of value in life...What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love." Johnny Depp..."When I'm finishing a picture, I hold some God made object up to it – a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand – as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it's bad art." Marc Chagall.

"If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, if he can live on after he's dead, then maybe he was a great man." James Dean... "I am at peace with God. My conflict is with Man." Charlie Chaplin.... "I only answer to two people, myself and God."- Cher.... "I have faith in faith. God is there, whether we have faith or not, so why not have faith in him?"-Valerie Bertinelli.... "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. "The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection." Michelangelo.... "Painting is the grandchild of nature. It is related to God."- Rembrandt.... "The best way to know God is to love many things."-Vincent Van Gogh.... "God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things."-Pablo Picasso.

"The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." Johann Sebastian Bach.... "I'm a believer. I don't belong to a particular religion, but I do believe in God. I couldn't write what I write about and be creative without a certain form of belief." Nick Cave.... "All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it up from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom." Albert Einstein.... "In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don't." Blaise Pascal

Heh, better not be quoting Pascal about religion. There was that certain wager he made that was embarrassing... and Einstein sure wasn't pro-religion in any Christian sense. He was just acknowledging the subject as being related to others in a certain way.

Boris-Only embarrassing to those who refuse to believe. I can't imagine trying to explain it to God in the end. Blaming Hawking or the rest of the scientific community that misled you for your lack of belief isn't going to cut it. I think Adam tried doing that in the Garden of Eden and it didn't get him very far. We all stand alone to face God in the end and the truth is stranger than fiction.

      @ the gadfly:
I am a Believer in Christ and the Word, and you are correct: even Jesus said no one knows when the time will come except the Father.

Jesus' mission to heal, free, find and provide salvation to those who accept Him as their savior is more often tempered, distorted and maligned by those who profess to believe in Him.

Camper's statement about the radio station being 'a platform for me' really shows who Camper is giving the glory to.

To follow Christ means to follow Him and abide in His Word, instead of following men and women who claim to be Believers and saying and doing things that are contrary to His Word.

      In His Love, Juanito.

Before I received the Lord into my life I was really searching for meaning and purpose. I was restless and very unsatisfied inside. There was definetely a void, something was missing. When I asked God to forgive my sins, and trusted in Jesus as My Lord and Savior, wow what a difference. Peace, purpose, meaning, contentment, joy and much much more. Trust in the Lord if you have not yet done so. He really is the Way, the Truth and the Life. God Bless

Ken Margo, well, everything I said above, plus much more. I know where I will go when I die, thats biiiiiiiiiiiig! I know that God loves me, and if God is for me who can be against me? He leads my by His Holy Spirit showing me the way that I should go. He has put love in my heart for others. I could go on and on. I hope you find peace with God through faith in Jesus. God Bless

    Ken

So, parasitic wasps who lay their eggs in live hosts so that their young can have fresh meat to eat once they hatch was designed by God for his pleasure, eh?
    --------

Human beings are proving to be the deadliest parasites. Yes, God did create all the parasites that live within us, among us, and on us. Looks like someday in the not-too-distant future, there'll be no host for the parasites...imagine, no chat boards!
You seem to be angry and bitter, Ken. Poor you...it's a miserable way to go through life. We'll pray for you.

I guess he/she means me, but they still never answered why God would create beings that cause such pain. Typical dodge paired with insult. Classic!

A voided chasm-full of spatial universes living in harmony within the cosmic divides of outward cosmological wonders will be one's pondering to be reckoned and distilled ever to begin an emotional settling within the sweetest of perplexities in human cognitions: found deeply within the atomic decisiveness's motioning of inner space relationships yet to be fully understood let alone a familiarity of one's conscience.

Jesus is the devil trying to trick humanity. God needs no representative. He can speak directly to all of us. Do not be fooled. Those that follow Christ follow the devil. Why else would their religion be so disorganized and preach hate towards other? Why would priests ra pe children? Why would the "one" religion of God be broken up into so many fighting factions that cannot agree? The same is true of Islam and Mohammad. Do not trust these false prophets of the devil. God speaks directly to us all. You simply have to listen for him.

Many 'truth' believers in Lord Christ Jesus seem to be accepting of written scripture declaring no one (not even Our Lord) to know God's Will for mankind and its clamoring outwardly onto the very chasms of cosmologic outer space voids most unavoidably known as the 'heavens'. A great change of world view is needed to draw out those who are willing to spend a specified amount of years living and doing business in space or upon other planetary bodies. Start with "hotels in spatial orbit" around the earth and expand hotel reaches starting with moon orbital hotels and outwards to Mars orbiting "hotels"!

  20. lionlylamb

Proof that God exists? Evolution is God's proof! God's kingdom domains are of Life's Inner Chasms! God did establish the kingdom domains (our bodies) to be of evolutionary orders. The final branching of this world's evolutionary trees of cellular cosmologies was for placement of mankind. As to just exactly how things evolve, it is with God's brethren who live deeply within all Celestial Life’s biology, who make a tweaking of celestial life's mechanized physiologies to better be served by Celestial Life for its’ Inner Hosts' sakes. Surely the building of Celestial Life Formations atom by atom does not come about without a few twists. Cellular manufacturing is kind of like mankind in its ever evolving issues within all manner of manufacturing ways.

Stupid Atheists loiter amidst the grasslands ever a wailing their contrary opinions like weeds needing to be pulled up! Stupid theists are as their atheist cousins with both sides teetering on the edges of sanctimonious ills within dire believe-abilities. Theists believe in a God of the above while atheists believe it not. Who is the worst fool, one who has their faith set to be in God above, (not the God of one’s insides) or the one who is faithlessly set against God? With God there is faith and without God there is faithlessness. Which side of mankind's equilibrium will win out? I have faith in one but not in the other.

As the world does turn seemingly ‘slowly’, the person's intellectual recognitions are likewise, ‘slow’ to be formulated into being minded perceptions. What once was viewed is now viewed differently and will so become changed once again in time's futures, until a finalized rationalism is made wholesome to one's ego, the psychic reservoir of emotional spiritualism, the soulfulness of recognizable perceptivities
