Atheists to start 1-800 hotline for doubters

By Dan Merica, CNN

(CNN) – Who can people call when religious doubts arise, but they're afraid to talk to their faith leaders or families?

A group that helps people "recover" from religion says it's ready to pick up the phone.

Recovering from Religion, which has about 40 support groups in the U.S. and Britain, plans to launch a hotline that will offer doubters an anonymous place to ask difficult questions and find communities of like-minded nonbelievers.

The group plans to staff the help line 24 hours a day and is modeling it after services like suicide prevention hotlines.

Sarah Morehead, executive director of Recovering from Religion, told CNN that the mission is to help people, not convert them to atheism.

“A lot of the times they just need someone to talk to," Morehead said.

The 1-800 number has yet to be named. Recovering from Religion is trying to raise $30,000 by June 30 to fund "The Hotline Project" with up to 40 counselors.

Ideally, the help line would be live by the holiday season, said Morehead, which is often a difficult time for people struggling with religious doubts.

The idea for the hotline sprang up after calls came in to the Recovering from Religion phone line from people who were questioning their faith and needed to talk to someone. Morehead said she gets a few calls every day and hundreds of e-mails a month from people seeking counseling.

From there, she said, it seemed a hotline that provided a permanent, anonymous place to talk to someone was the best option.

"Coming out" as a nonbeliever - or even a doubter - can often be extremely difficult, Morehead and others say. In addition to the existential worries, budding nonbelievers run the risk of alienating family and friends.

The help line’s volunteer counselors will be trained to not engage in religious debate, Morehead said. Instead, they will try to give callers “practical, action-oriented solutions.”

When someone first calls the hotline, the counselor will start by simply asking the caller to talk about his or her personal story, said Morehead.

Later, the counselor and the caller might work on an action plan. The caller's goals may concern formally leaving religion altogether, but Morehead said that counselors will also offer advice on finding a new faith or connecting with a local community of nonbelievers.

Some blogs have questioned the hotline, however, calling it a ploy to increase the number of atheists in America.

Headlines like “New 1-800 Number Funded By Liberals To Convert Christians to Atheists,” for example, have cropped up at a number of conservative blogs.

Morehead said her critics fail to grasp the point of Recovering from Religion.

“Most of the people who contact us are working their way towards disbelief, so of course we are very equipped to handle that,” Morehead said. “That is not the goal, though, or the job of the facilitators.”

This hotline is not completely unique in the world of religious "nones" – people who either don’t believe in God or don’t affiliate with any religious beliefs. Atheists have long discussed disbelief in the comfort of online anonymity.

“We have seen how important the Internet is, especially young people questioning their faith, and this provides them with another resource with a different focus,” said Jesse Galef, communications director for the Secular Student Alliance. “For people who want more guidance, I think this resource will be very valuable.”

Services that help religious doubters have thrived recently.

The Clergy Project, an online community for preachers who no longer believe in God, has grown from 52 to nearly 500 people since its founding in 2011, said Teresa MacBain, the former executive director of the project.

MacBain, a former pastor who converted to atheism, called the help line "another way for people to contact someone anonymously and discuss the struggles they are having for their beliefs.”

“If this project had been around when I found the Clergy Project, I would have used it.”

MacBain said she plans to get training as one of the counselors and hopes to be answering calls when the service launches.

“We are all insane. That is what original sin means. Sin is insanity. It is preferring finite joy to infinite joy, creatures to the Creator, an unhappy, Godless self to a happy, God-filled self Only God can save us from this disease. That is what the name "Jesus" means: 'God saves'.” Kreeft

No, Harry, believing in an invisible creature for whom there is no evidence is insane. To wit, one should consider what a greater mind than yours posted here earlier:

TOP 10 SIGNS YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN...
10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by
other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.
9 – You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people
evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical
claim that we were created from dirt.
8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.
7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah,
but you don`t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered
all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic
groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!
6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods
sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit
impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back
to life and then ascended into the sky.
5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically
established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing
dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that
Earth is a few generations old.
4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those
who share your beliefs – though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity
in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant"
      and "loving."
3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to
convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues"
may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.
2 – You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers.
You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the
remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.
1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the
Bible, Christianity, and church history – but still call yourself a Christian.

      @Harry,
The 'We' in your discertation above, are Christians, as they are the ones, who need to be saved –
And as you were made in the image of a god, then that god would be (i bet you thought i would say insane) Christian –
And so Christian created Christians, who are insane, so that they can be saved, from being insane, so that they can be happy – or

Since we've still got HeavenStench dumping quotes on us from her foul Christian book of nasty, let's take a closer look at some of the horrid content that's really in there. From both testaments, and note the comments re context and interpretation:

    Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

    Leviticus 25
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement.
Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

So, you quote verses out of context and it is meaningless mocking of God and those who believe. Do you have a goal to accomplish?

      June 12, 2013 at 8:09 pm |
    • Bob

fred, I address your context point above. Read it and think, stupid.

      June 12, 2013 at 8:15 pm |
    • Jerry

Bob you are over the top, but there is an interesting point there:

Why can't god communicate in a modern way? An all-powerful creature can't use the internet and all its services? Really? One can only reasonably doubt (at best) the existence of a creature that might expect us to believe based mainly on a (many times re-translated) very old book.

      June 12, 2013 at 8:23 pm |
    • fred

      Jerry
The method of communication works as intended without overriding influence on free will. Salmon farm raised are weak and lack nutrient value. The only way to exercise your free will is to fully use it. The only way to find God is to seek God with a life driving passion. If there is a Kingdom awaiting those who truly desire the things of God not the things of this word then they are given every opportunity to find home just as a salmon finds the creek that gave it life.
What kind of soul would you find in heaven if there was only creek and rails on both sides to make sure you end up there?
What kind of soul would be in heaven if every one with sin was smacked with lightning each time they sin after the age of 18?

Despite the huge difference in environments and a 2 billion year evolutionary time span between archaea and humans, the viruses hijack the same set of proteins to break out of infected cells.

    For Christians please read this:
If you as a father or mother has to choose one of the below two choices, please tell me which one you will choose:
1-all your kids are to die.
    Or
    2-You'll be beaten to death.
Normally and logically all of you will choose the second one.
Why that choice? Because dying for one time is better than dying every day.
Those who lost their kids are dying every day to the rest of their life.
Also Those who are sick with dangerous diseases are dying every day.
Those who lost their wives or husbands or beloveds are dying every day.
And too many others are suffering and dying every hour because of the pain of the soul not the body.
Actually the suffering body is nothing comparing with the suffering soul.
Actually That concept destroying your faith from the base……………how?
We can ask for how many hours the Christ suffered? Two hours? three hours? ten hours?
Actually If he was sick for many years, or if he lost his family or if he lost much of his beloveds and dears or if he passed all these things then we can say that he suffered for the human kind.
But suffering by beaten for few hours for all the human kind for all the time a little child can not believe it.
That is why you can find too much atheists in your sociaty because what they found in Christianity is against the logic and the brain.
If the forgiveness is by beaten, then what a cheap price for forgiveness.

      Are those the ONLY options?
How about the options that you understand that everyone will die – and
That you are not relegated to be beaten to death – or
That with wisdom and understanding and compassion, you can do you part to alleviate pain and suffering – or
That you are not hopeless and helpless, and can have some self integrity to do your part, to make this a better world to live in – or
A gazillion other things that are not as depressing and futile –

    June 8, 2013 at 6:31 pm | Report abuse |

and here's where I interject that I am not spiritually dead, and therefore, there is no reason to make an excuse –
Spirituality and religion are not synonamous –
The soul and spirit, are stolen concepts, which religious men usurped, and incorporated into their religions –

A soul is a continuity with another ent-ity – (part of you – part the other ent-ity) –
The enti-ty can be human or non-human, and can be living or dead –
It is not a mystery of religion, it can be known –
There is no indeible mark on a soul from sin –

A spirit is a complete soul – a soul complete in its journies through time and space (the Physical and Mental planes of Existance) –

Continuities include: Art, Science, Music, Family, Nature, Life, ad infinitum and etc. –
Those who have no continuity, have no soul, and are lost – in Space and in Time –
The natural process of existance is to augment your continuity with your environment –
Peceive your environment, and the continuities will follow –

Is this what you consider spiritual death?
Maybe it is time for you to re-awaken your child, who is allowed perception as a natural gift –

      @HS,
To answer your question, yes I know what the scripture means – but
Each of decides which path we wil take on our soul journies – continuities with factors, within our environments –
I certainly have no need to judge you, or direct your path – you will decide –
I will know you by your words – some of which are unspoken – because I can see your soul – because
I have taken the path, of perceiving souls – It is not in your book –
Put down your book, and experience Life –
I have not read a book for over thirty years, but I have spoken through eyes –
blah, blah, blah...;..experience life, forget yourself –
I am a stone carver, all paths are opened before me –
I am the soul journeyer for a million years –

      @Science,
It would seem, that if the chondrites could do that the first time, when the solar system was forming –
That they could be enabled for space exploration and colonization, to provide water for an arid planet –
      Perhaps in a geodome –

laststonecarver, you posted "@HS, To answer your question, yes I know what the scripture means – but
Each of decides which path we wil take on our soul journies – continuities with factors, within our environments –
I am a stone carver, all paths are opened before me –
I am the soul journeyer for a million years –
I wear bodies like clothes, and minds like jewelry –
I seek continuity with Life – with the soul of Life -"

Answer: You are lost on the wide path to destruction as Jesus warns,

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

      Matthew 7:13

      Amen.

      @HS,
Path of destruction of what? – You don't even know –
You have no concept of what a soul is, much less your soul –
You reiterate verses from a book – mindlessly –
You suppose that you have a continuity with a god – because of the great gift, from that god, that enables you to cut and paste bible verses, on the internet – mindlessly –
You believe that you a holy because you condemn me –
You discert that i am lost -but you have no clue, who i am – you thought i was Tom –
I there anything of substance in you – do you have any self integrity – or can you only copy and paste –

laststonecarver, stay with a man made spiritual concept that just allows you amusement instead of learning His truth that walks you through spiritual growth.

      June 14, 2013 at 10:12 am |
    • Pete

"His truth that walks you through spiritual growth."

That's why when you copy and paste scriptures from your bible study sites you actually don't comprehend the real meaning of it.

      June 14, 2013 at 10:14 am |
    • laststonecarver

      @HS,
His truth is what taught you the spiritual concept –
and so equipped His truth, it should be quite easy for you to explain your spiritual concept –
Does it start – Once upon a time?, if so please desist...
You have no spiritual concept, because it doesn't explain it in your book –
You can't cut and paste it –
Those who taught me of spiritual concept, I never met –
They most likely were men and women – gender is not applicable –
Religion is not applicable to the spiritual concept –
It is just something your religion founders thought sounded cool –
If you believe otherwise, it should be simple for you to provide a detailed analysis, or even a simple analysis of your soul concept – now would be good –

What I said in an earlier post I think applies here. A literal translation of dieties is impossible. They do make sense as archetypes or as symbolism for mental states. An abstract will always look absurd when taken literally.

June 7, 2013 — The first-known definitive case of a benign bone tumor has been discovered in the rib of a young Neandertal who lived about 120,000 years ago in what is now present-day Croatia. The bone fragment, which comes from the famous archaeological cave site of Krapina, contains by far the earliest bone tumor ever identified in the archaeological record.

What logical proof negates the possibility of deities? (note, I am not a theist, but I don't think you can say that deities are logically impossible)

By the way, there are plenty of people in fields from anthropology to psychology and primate studies who have been investigating this for over 100 years. There are books and studies and papers published across the globe.

Saraswati. A literal translation of any diety is by nature logically impossible. Some dieties are technicolor, others defy gravity, none of them are visible, tangible, or verifiable by any means we currently possess.

They are understandable however as symbols that represent an aspect of our own personality or consciousness or an abstraction. I agree psychology is probably a good place to start.
