Exodus apologizes to gay community, shuts down 'cure' ministry

(CNN) - After 37 years, Exodus International, an organization whose mission was to "help" gay Christians become straight, is shutting down. But not before issuing an apology.

"We're not negating the ways God used Exodus to positively affect thousands of people, but a new generation of Christians is looking for change - and they want to be heard," Tony Moore, an Exodus board member, said Wednesday.

The announcement comes less than a day after Exodus issued a wide-ranging apology to the gay community for "years of undue judgment by the organization and the Christian Church as a whole," a statement from the group says.

"Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we've ceased to be a living, breathing organism," said Alan Chambers, the president of Exodus. "For quite some time, we've been imprisoned in a worldview that's neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical."

Chambers, who has a wife and children and previously identified as gay, has acknowledged that he has "ongoing same-sex attractions."

    I can't speak for others, but if I was ever on a jury judging a child that was forced to endure this nonsense who then decided to disembowel one of these clowns and use his entrails to make haggis, I could not in good faith ever vote to convict him of anything.

    These clowns fried a lot of minds, and they need to pay.

    • I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that

      It's the parents who send them there. The buck stops there, in my opinion. If some wide-load mom and her wide-load child sue a fast-food outlet for making them fat, it's not the fast-food outlets fault. I know it's not exactly the same, but the same should apply. It's the parents who are responsible for and accountable to their children.

      June 21, 2013 at 10:59 am |
    • William Demuth

      So if a parent sends a child to be tortured the torturer bears no accountability?

      Unethical medical treatment is a crime, quite a serious one in fact. If these men used treatments that they knew were bogus from the get go they are guilty of innumerable charges.

      If one knowingly selects Josef Rudolf Mengele as his pediatrician their children must expect damage, but both the parent and the doctor are accountable.

      "It's the parents. . ." Sure, let's let the bogus advisors that encouraged the parents to send their kids there off the hook.

    • I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that

      Torture is a strong word to use in this instance, although I suppose it depends on what your definition of torture is. Anyway, all these ex-gay camps were legally sanctioned (although they were greatly frowned upon by the medical community). Wouldn't it be entrapment to allow these organizations to practice, but then prosecute them a few years down the line? Unless it can be proven that, from the beginning, all these ex-gay camp operators knew with absolute certainty that there was no way their treatment would have any affect, I don't think a justifiable case can be made against them. And let's face it, they're religious freaks. I reckon that many of them truly believed what they were doing was beneficial.

      Also, regarding unethical medical treatment, it happens all the time. All these pract.itioners of holistic medicine, like homeopathy, they know that that stuff is bogus but are allowed to practice it.

      Those places were sanctioned by the State in Ireland and received public funding. The State and the Church were accountable there, as both inst.itutions were inseparable in Ireland at the time (they still are, in many ways, even though Ireland probably has the fastest secularizing population in Europe).

      I didn't say gays are "born that way." Nobody is absolutely certain as to why some people are attracted to others of the same gender. I said it wasn't a choice. And yes, some people are attracted to both genders. So what?

      You know, all of you nuts seem to think that the matter of choice is crucial. Why? What if it were a choice? So what? What makes you think that choice doesn't deserve the same regard as your choice to be an ass?

      People are born with different kinds of attraction. Studies have revealed that man is not born monogamous. Man is polygamous by nature. Not sure why people think polygamy is a choice.

      Nitwit fred posted a windy epistle on the gay bishop thread about how marriage will eventually include marrying oneself if we accept gay marriage.

      What I'd like to know from nitwit fred is this: even IF your silly scenario were to suddenly come to pass in reality, what would happen? Would your world as you know it suddenly end? Would your marriage be dismantled? What terrible fate would await the world if people in polyamorous relationships could marry? Why would you be so upset about it?

      Polygamous marriages would be okay, I guess, if the wives could take as many husbands as they want.
      I think for legal reasons regarding interitance and SS, it will never come to pass. And don't even start with the slippery slope BS about marrying children or marrying animals. Neither can give informed consent.

      June 21, 2013 at 11:47 am |
    • the real Tom

      Of course, polygamy is unlikely to become legal. That's why freddy's posts are so laughable. He's all het up over gay marriage because he thinks it's the tip of some iceberg. The vast majority of people are straight. They don't have any interest in marrying multiple partners, or someone of the same gender. I wonder how fred gets through the day with his hysteria. Does he get this exercised about the stock market, or the price of cabbage?

    the new testament claims in no uncertain terms that jesus christ is the son of god. him, his divinity, his person, is why the books and letters were written describing him, his life and mission, his work, his words, the miracles, the love, his stand against hypocrisy. no one has found evidence proving it is inaccurate in 2,000 years. not bad, huh?

    controversies have come and gone. theories challenging every conceivable idea to prove it is nonsense have failed. his redeeming power is as alive and pertinent this moment as ever. in fact, to anyone who wants to know him right now, he is more than capable of revealing himself to your hungry heart.

      Nope. Saul of Tarsus cooked up Paulianity, (your real religion) to gain cult members. The "divinity" is different in each gospel. "Divinity" for a Jew was in no way equal to Yahweh.
      What did the Witch of Endor say when Saul asked her what she saw, when she conjured the "shade" of Samuel ? A "divine" being. Try taking a Bible class and learn something about your cult.

      The authors of the New Testament claimed that Jesus was a superhero who could perform miracles. When I see proof that these miraculous events are physically possible in our universe, then I'll reconsider. In the absense of that proof, I'll continue to accept that the men who wrote these stories about Jesus were lying.

      I forgot to include the other possiblity. It could have been that the writers of the New Testament were telling the truth, but that Jesus was lying to them, and all these supposed "miracles" were just cheap parlor tricks.

      After all, I've seen magicians doing similar things. I'm not impressed that Jesus walked on water (seen it), had a near death experience (happens every day), healed the sick (frauds do that every Sunday on TV), changed water into wine (seen it), and pulled an endless string of fish out of a basket (seen it).

      You capitalize proper nouns, not common nouns. Those are the simple rules of grammar. Most of us learned those rules in about the fifth grade. If you flaunt those rules, you look uneducated. If you want to appear to be uneducated, be my guest.

      It cracks me up that the Piddler tries so hard to excuse his ignorance about writing by pretending that he cares to write well when it matters and doesn't bother when it's just a blog. What a huge pile.

      Because those two are still under the mistaken impression that people choose their gender preference instead of being born with it. Maybe they'll grow up one day. I don't hold out that hope, though.

  16. PRISM 1234

    Built on the Rock the church does stand, even when steeples are falling;
    Crumbled have spires in every land, Bells still are chiming and calling;
    Calling the young and old to rest, calling the souls in sin distressed,
    Longing for rest everlasting.

    Not in the temples made with hands, God, the Most High, is dwelling
    High above earth His temple stands, all earthly temples excelling;
    Yet He who dwells in Heavens above chose to abide with us in love
    Making our bodies His temples.

    We are God’s house of living stones, builded for His habitation;
    He makes our hearts His mumble thrones giving us life and salvation;
    Where two or three should seek His face, He comes and dwells with them in grace
    Blessings upon them bestowing.

    Built on the Rock the Church shall stand, though earthly temples be closing.
    Silenced are voices of evil men, but God's Voice still is calling...
    Calling the young and old to rest, calling the mankind's souls to rest, calling to life everlasting.

    And this is the way it was, is and forever will be.... even if the highest mountains crumble and all tat is in the Universe turns to dust and time is no more.... Yet, God and His purposes will stand and endure.

    Blessed are those who do not turn deaf ear to His calling..... blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God's face.
    .
    But the wicked will perish and their remembrance will be no more. Only that place of the damned called Hell will know them. Oh, what a waste of God's gift of life!
    Yet, fools will never understand!

      You're a piece of work, Prissy. I seem to recall you were quite enamored of a piece of music by Samuel Barber. You even posted a video. Did you realize that he was gay? How does that square with your assertion that he composed that piece because he was Christian?

      When you found out he was gay, did you suddenly change your mind about him and his music, or did it occur to you that being gay and Christian is entirely possible?

      June 20, 2013 at 11:31 pm |
    • Fortune holds more for the bold

      Geez Tom how many times do you need to impress us that you Ben know who Samuel Barber was?

    • the real Tom

      Of course he would. The point is that Prissy is a hypocrite who believes that only straight people can be christian and that only christians would write such great religious music. Prissy only enjoyed Barber's music because she/he didn't realize that he was gay. If he/she had known that, he/she would never have admitted admiring his musical gift.
