XXX Church pastor: Weiner is an addict, not a joke

Opinion by Craig Gross, Special to CNN

(CNN) - There are still a lot of details to come out, but here’s one thing we know about Anthony Weiner: He is not a punch line; he is an addict.

I would assume Weiner has always had an uphill battle against being the butt of someone’s joke, just by the nature of his last name. Immaturity has always reigned supreme, and now in the days of Internet memes and Twitter zingers,  Weiner seemed ready-made for a scandal.

And yet he managed to get elected to Congress and once had a respectable appearance on "The Daily Show." He was on the rise, a politician ascending.

And then he got busted by the media for tweeting pictures of parts that should remain private to random women.

Shamed and chagrined, Weiner resigned and promised to get better. Things were looking up again for him when he entered the race to become the next mayor of New York, and he assured everyone that all his sexting and scandals were in the past.

And now, “Carlos Danger.”

Calls for 'Carlos Danger' to withdraw pour in

That is, apparently, one of the pseudonyms Weiner used last summer when he engaged in an illicit sexting relationship with a 22-year-old woman.

These are not the actions of a clown.

This is not something to make fun of.

This is a serious, family-wrecking, soul-crushing, career-destroying addiction.

Here’s what I would hope for Anthony Weiner: I would hope that he’d take himself out of the public eye, get back into counseling and put some concrete boundaries in place regarding his technology use.

And most important, I want him to get accountable.

Timeline: Congress, lewd photos and NYC's mayoral race

As the leader of XXXchurch.com, I work with a lot of sex addicts - people who can’t stop using porn or people who feel trapped in making it - and the biggest key to breaking out of the cycle of addiction is accountability.

Accountability is not prevention. You know the term “yes men,” when people - especially politicians like Weiner - surround themselves with others who will just automatically agree with them?

Most people think of accountability as surrounding yourself with a group of “no men,” who will always tell you what you can’t do.

That’s not it at all. Accountability is about having people around you whom you are intentionally open and honest with, people who will consistently challenge you to live up to the standards you’ve set for yourself. It’s about helping you to make good choices and live a freer, richer life.

I’m not going to point a mocking finger at Anthony Weiner. I can’t pass judgment on how he got to this point, because I don’t know him.

But I can say that being accountable to others is not just a way of battling your addictive demons; it’s a way of putting a positive spin on your life to create times where you don’t hear the demons at all.

There are millions of us working through some kind of something. For some, it’s drugs. For others, it’s alcohol. For still others, it’s an eating disorder or trying to quit smoking or being in financial disarray.

For Anthony Weiner, it’s “Carlos Danger” and all that symbolizes.

Whatever you’re working through, don’t do it alone.

You don’t have to.

Sanford is way worse. He took off to Argentina on the taxpayers' dime, and left no way for his staff to contact him. He's a thief and abandoned his duties.

I just realized I've been getting my 2001 quote moniker slightly wrong. It's not "I can't let you do that", it's "I'm afraid I can't do that". With all the pedants out there, I'm surprised it wasn't spotted earlier.

I fail to see how I can be incorrect seeing as I didn't make an assertion. I merely cast doubt on an assertion.

His private writings also spoke disparagingly about the Church. I also recall reading that he would have preferred Germany's religion to have been similar to Ja.panese religion, which honored sacrafice to the Fatherland.

My point is it's ridiculous making absolute statements about Hitler's religious beliefs/affiliation when there are numerous conflicting reports.

The most important thing to remember, is that whether Hitler was a Christian or not, he was able to convince millions of German Christians that it was a good idea to kill all of the Jews.

Richard, believing in God almighty does not make one Christian – he did not follow the mandates of Jesus, so obviously was not Christian. One can claim to be anything he or she wants, but actions are the evidence. "You will know them by their actions..." Hitler's actions do not match up to being a follower of Jesus – there are very specific evidences that Jesus states for his followers (ie, Christians).

Adolf Hitler, although was brought up a Catholic, was obsessed with the power of the Roman Catholic Church while despising its teaching, trying to unify Germany's Protestant Churches under a Nazi movement but failed, fascinated by the aggressiveness of Islam (he believed Islam fitted Germans more than Christianity) while despising Muslims, and a power hungry deranged individual with extreme socialist views. He was recruited, promoted and brought to power by the National Socialist German Workers Party, aka NAZI, which was an extreme form of Socialism, that planned and carried out the horrific crimes against humanity of the Holocaust.

          Dave
When I lived in Germany, I studied him at great length. My grandmother left Germany early on in his rise to power. She was ashamed of the direction the country was going in and knew to get out. The information she gave me led to a fascination with the man and the social mindset that allowed all of what followed to happen. Many stories I got first hand from people who were around during his rise.

Where do you think Hitler got his ideas about Jews from if not Martin Luther's "On the Jews and Their Lies"? Luther himself had a colorful career of persecuting those people. Hitler probably idolized him.

None. But I was able to use a variety of resources over a 2 year period that showed a great deal about the man. He viewed atheism as a mental illness, as he did h0m0$exuality. I have read many of his personal correspondances, his military and political correspondances, and the information he had put out publicly.
He firmly believed in god the almighty, the christian god almighty. He made mention of his belief frequently.

Hitler has a lot of anti-Christian quotes attributed to him.

"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together.... The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity.... Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things."

"Historically speaking, the Christian religion is nothing but a Jewish sect.... After the destruction of Judaism, the extinction of Christian slave morals must follow logically.... Ah, the God of the deserts, that crazed, stupid, vengeful Asiatic despot with his power to make laws!"

Hitler did have many anti-christian quotes. Understand that he himself believed in the christian god, but he believed the religion of christianity had been corrupted by the Jews. He believed that Christ was not a jew, and the bible was changed to fit the jewish agenda. He did not put much faith in the organized religion of christianity, that is true, but he did himself believe in the christian god. That belief is a large part of why he did not like the Jews.

He didn't believe Jesus was a Jew (a very important part of the Christian story), he did the opposite of what Jesus asks of us and he ordered Christians to be murdered.

To me, it sounds like he was trying to create his own god (himself).

ALL believers have in their mind a different image of what god is. Just as different as the individual, the image in ones mind is never the same as any others, so in that respect, since your god only exists in your mind, how would that be any different than any other believer?

Not me, but you and Hitler have more in common. You both believe in a god, a christian god. The image of that god is in your mind, as his was in his.
It is a fine example of how easliy corruptable religion is, since no two believers believe the exact same thing, evidence that the bible is inspired by men, not any deity. If it were truly divinely inspired, why is it so easily corruptable, why is so much of the bible incorrect?
Why is it possible for it to be corrupted by incorrect translation, by differing interpretations, of differinig views of "the will of god" when no one can ever know what your god's will is in the first place?

I do not believe there are any gods that would fit any definition any man has ever given, so obviously I do not believe the bible, nor any of the other religious texts, nor any of the thousands of gods that have been presented by men for men.

          @Ken "..."

That may be true but keep in mind that Hitler adopted Luther's view as a politician and not as a Christian!

          [
Adolf Hitler departing from the Judio-=Christaiina According to Max Domarus, Hitler had fully discarded belief in the Judeo-Christian conception of God by 1937, but continued to use the word "God" in speeches – but it was not the God "who has been worshiped for millennia", but a new and peculiarly German "god" who "let iron grow". Thus Hitler told the British journalist Ward Price in 1937: "I believe in God, and I am convinced that He will not desert 67 million Germans who have worked so hard to regain their rightful position in the world."[46]

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_views_of_Adolf_Hitler
          ]

Now, regarding Martin Luther, just keep in mind that no human, regardless of level of knowledge and/or wisdom, knows it all!

Martin Luther was a great Reformer that discerned the truth about Christianity, hence the Reformation of the Christian Church! However, as a born again Christian Protestant, I don't agree with Martin Luther's views regarding the Jews and the peasants! He was caught up in an adverse situation at the time as a Reformer from all directions including the Jews, especially that his Reform involved that Salvation is by Grace through Faith ALONE in Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior AND APART from the Law! That put him in a direct collision course with the Roman Catholic Church as well as the Jews for they both incorporate the Mosaic Law!

So, what do we do?! I elect adopting Martin Luther's Reformation of the Christian Church and rejecting his views on the Jews! Simple as that!

And plenty of businesspeople, entertainers, athletes, authors, "scientists", celebrity chiefs, reformed convicts, and other Christian role models all claim to be Christians for the purpose of selling themselves to such a huge market only to fall from grace, as it were. I honestly can't see how anyone can point to someone and say "That's a real Christian" with any confidence.

          @Ken "..."

It is God's job to know who is a true Christian or not. Christians are not set apart by their deeds but by their Faith in God.

          Romans 8:9-11
"9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."

          Romans 8:26,27
"26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."

          Acts 26:18
"18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’"

Are we seriously getting into this argument again?

Who cares what Hitler's faith was. His personal beliefs do not reflect upon the religion (or those in that faith) at all.

Many people claimed to be Christians to make themselves look good throughout history. However true Christians are the ones who do their best to adhere to Christ's teaching. There were many false teachers and false prophets in the bible. They use it to advance themselves for the wrong reasons. One way to test whether someone is a Christian is by his fruits (actions). Jesus died for us. Hitler caused millions to die for him for his evil, selfish ambition.

John Stewart must be extremely grateful that he is on hiatus and is not forced to ridicule his friend. I thought that the first time this happened, John was very classy in that he could poke fun at his friend without it getting "too weird". This is just TOO MUCH and he must be ecstatic that John Oliver is behind the desk instead of him.

      AE,
" I believe Paul defined a human condition we know call addiction."

Sure, but he was certainly not the first. It's a basic human condition, addressed long before Paul of Tarsus, including ancient Sumeria, Egypt and China. Tarsus was known to have a large contingent of Greek-influenced Stoics, and Paul seems to have been raised on their philosophy.

      One precept of it:
"Stoicism teaches the development of self-control and fort.itude as a means of overcoming destructive emotions;" –http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoicism
