'No Muslim parking' signs spark outrage

From CNN affiliate KPRC

Houston - New signs posted outside a mosque in Spring Branch, Texas, have sparked outrage from Muslims nationwide.

In black letters, the signs reads, "No Muslim parking in the Westview Shopping Center. Your car will be towed."

The posters lined the street near the El Farouq Mosque, where Muslims heading to worship services said they were were offended.

"I feel sorry for the person who wrote it," Ahmed Hassan told CNN affiliate KPRC. "This is what comes to mind because obviously he has a lot of hate."

"I'm very shocked because we do live in a society that's supposed to be very accepting, and this is what we all preach," said Yara Aboshady. "That we all have the freedom of religion."

The parking signs were mentioned Thursday in an newsletter from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslims civil rights group.

In recent years, Muslims have faced protests nationwide when trying to construct new mosques, including in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where mosque opponents have filed an appeal with the state supreme court to block construction.

The El Farouq Mosque sits across the street from the shopping center. Store employees did not want to go on camera for KPCR but did say they get angry when mosque members park in their lot, taking up spots meant for customers.

With the Muslim monthlong fast for the holy month of Ramadan ending and a crowd expected at the mosque, the signs anonymously appeared.

No shopping center employees would admit to posting the signs. One worker said the shopping center owner, Steve Kwon, posted the signs. He denied it.

"I did not put up the signs," Kwon said. After speaking with KPRC, Kwon removed the signs.

Aboshady wondered about the sign writer's true motive.

"It could be no parking for the sake of patrons that come in," Aboshady said. "Or it really could be a prejudice and just a mean thing to say."

She and others still find the signs insensitive and offensive.

"It's really offensive and it's hateful," Hassan said.

The shopping center owner says he will call a tow company to try to get all of the cars that shouldn't be parked there out. He also says he'll be checking the property to make there are no more of the offensive parking signs.

I think the sign could have been worded more tactfully, but obviously the issue here is ownership and authorized use of a parking lot. The management of the shopping center has a right to exclude non-customers from parking in their lot.

We have a situation here in San Diego where there is a very large church called The Rock, which is next to a retail shopping area called Liberty Station. In order to acquire its license to operate, the church had to agree to have its patrons not park in the shopping center's lot. There are signs that get put up every Sunday advising that churchgoers would have their cars towed if they park in that lot.

If those signs read "No CHRISTIAN parking in Liberty Station Shopping Center" it would be understandable that some Christians might take offense. But it wouldn't be viewed seriously as "hateful" by many intelligent people.

The Muslims who are offended by Westview's sign should instead be laughing at the poor writing skills of the individual who chose the wording for the sign.

It's the wording; perhaps the author of the sign was too lazy to look up the spelling of "Mosque".
I don't think it was intended to be "hateful", myself.

I'm not sure I've seen any Muslims comment on this story and on most Islam oriented stories there are a lot of comments from Muslims. I suspect most think this is as silly as the rest of us do.

  3. You're an idiot

Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Zakir Hussain, Mohammed Rafi and a million others. Hope you are not brain dead enough to be unable to Google, although your ignorance does seem to be astounding.

Just for the record, Shah Rukh Khan is married to a Hindu and goes to the Hindu temples with his wife and children. Many Imans are outraged at his behavior., Aamir Khan is also married to a Hindu woman after divorcing his first wife. Salman Khan is a women beater and drunk, just ask Ashwari and Katrina who both are non-Muslim. His mother is Hindu and father Muslim so he himself has said the whole family practices both faiths. He is 47 and unmarried because his behaviors are so bizarre no woman wants to take a chance on him even though he is a multi-millionaire. He also has said he is a high ranking Freemason, just like Saif Khan, who also married a Hindu, whose father is a high ranking Mason. Freemason contradicts the teachings of Islam. Do you really think these men are Muslims even though your clerics have major problems with calling them true Muslims? There are a million other famous Muslims??!! Really? Are you serioius? Even the past president of India that was suppose to be a true Muslim was a high ranking Freemason which contradicts Musliim teaching. Perhaps you don't know what a real Muslim is? You need to double check with your Muslim clerics on that one. It is a fact that Muslims are uneducated and undereducated in India due to their own fault. It is a fact that there are very, very few Muslims in high places in government or occupations in India due to the fact that they are uneducated and undereducated. They simply can't compete with Hindus, Sikkhs, Buddhists, Christians, Jains or atheists in India for jobs. You can wish those facts away but they are true and are the fault of Muslims themselves. It is also a fact that Buddhists in Myanmar have passed laws that Muslims can only have two children because they have problems with the Muslims in their country. Buddhists are free to have as many children as they want in that country. It seems to me that Islamic teachings are not embraced nor liked in the host countries that Muslim reside that are non Islamic countries. It is also a fact that Muslims have higher rates of drug and alcohol addiction in the UK than the rest of the population. This was reported on CNN even! You can call names and be all arrogant with others but facts are facts and you will never erase facts no matter how much you try. The only person you are fooling is yourself.

      • You're an idiot

Perhaps I don't know what a real Muslim is, because I am not one. I'm Hindu, and despite whatever you said, the names I suggested are very famous and very successful Muslims. And I can name countless others, but he wanted one.

        August 11, 2013 at 1:39 am |
        • mrschristenson

If you are a HIndu then you would know the names you mentioned are questionable by the very standards of Islam since they practice Hinduism in addition to Islam. If you were a Hindu you would know that Islam and Hinduism are not compatable teachings at all. Muslim Clerics would say this and your own Hindu gurus would say this. You would also know that anyone that is not familar with Bollywood wouldn't even reconize these men in a airport outside of their own countries. The question was, what Muslims has contributed to humanity as a whole? The men you have mention have not done anything to even cure the common cold but only enriched themselves, while many Hindus have contributed to all of humanity through science. Would you deny this is true about Hindus? Seriously, you must not be a devote Hindu if you don't know these things.

Ironic but true..Since our nation was established espousing freedom of religion, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Quakers, Mennonites to name a few, were discriminated against even more so than Muslims today. Of course, knowing that and why would take a high school education.....huh?

And in other news, Muslims threw acid in two British teenagers faces in Zanzibar. The girls were 18 year old volunteer teachers. These people are animals. If some people did not want them in their parking lot, it is understandable.

The nation was founded on the ability of the inhabitants to be free from the state religion. In every country where muslims take over, they pass the sharia law, thereby taking over the state and imposing religion. If you want to stay free, reject the invasion.

Saudi Arabia does not allow any churches. Saudi Arabia does not allow Christian clergy to enter. Saudi Arabia confiscates your bible if you happen to have one when you land at any of their airports. Why should Muslim complain about not being allowed to park for free in a shopping mall for their religious purpose?

    August 10, 2013 at 8:10 pm |
    • Saraswati

I'm not a particular fan of Islam, but you do realize Saudi Arabia isn't the same thing as "Muslims" but a small fraction of the world's Muslim population. The largest predominantly Muslim country is Indonesia...where they have Catholic schools, like the one Obama attended and catholic universities and churches and state protected freedom for Christians to practice. They also have a group of fundamentalist idiots causing trouble...kind of like most countries have.

oh muslims CLAIM all the inventions of the ancient period lol... 1001inventions dot com these muslims made for their propaganda. the trailer itself was so ridiculous and away from facts that the only thing popped in my head was "is there a 1001inventions debunked" somewhere. and sure enough, there was LOL

but in all seriousness, they are teaching this propaganda to kids in the UK and stuff with the harry potter magic. Its the height of propaganda.

example, they claim they invented the pin hole camera... when in fact, it has origins in China and other non muslim culture.

I would like to add, im my conversation with muslims, that they believe the best period to 'brainwash' a human is adolescence. and that is what they have always been following in history. from suicide bombers to child soldiers to madrassas to propaganda.

      August 10, 2013 at 7:34 pm |
      • Portland tony

You don't have to be a genius to understand that the concept "brainwash" of adolescents is unique to Muslims. Every church's pastor knows the importance of "Sunday School" in the teaching of biblical or other stories to kids in hope they will grow up and follow their church's teachings!

        August 10, 2013 at 10:16 pm |

Oversensitive mush???? Muslims love to make a fuss out of everything eh,.... they are acting like they founded America. They will include this in their rallies and propaganda in the future by distorting the facts about it... and obv the sheep they are, muslims around the world will believe it and some to the extent that they will kill the first christian they see.

Here, near my campus, almost ALL commercial surrounding buildings have clear signs of "NO STUDENT PARKING, Car will be towed" now, do we all go and sit in front of the sign and cry and spread hate? No, because we understand that we are invading the customer space of the buildings we aren't even going into.

    August 10, 2013 at 7:18 pm |

It's the wording, genius. Had they said "No Mosque Parking" nothing would have been wrong. You are delusional if you think a "No Christian Parking" sign would not cause bible beaters to whine and cry.

But Sadly, majority of the muslims that move here have a real intention of coming here to sow seeds for an islamic revolution sometime in the future to make their goal of spreading islam easier. Even if the others claim they wont have any part of it, they WILL vote in favor of islamic revolutions while sitting back and enjoying the show in silence. I predict that in dearborn in the coming years.

Outrage? Well OK, but what I think we have here is the fact that whoever owns the shopping mall hired a stupid person to make their sign. I am sure they intended to say "no MOSQUE" parking, not Muslim parking.

Should they be educated? Well, yes. But it probably wasn't done with the intent of suggesting that any muslims who wanted to shop their would be towed.

This is exactly what the issue is. It is not religious intolerance, it is poorly worded signs trying to warn people to not use private parking.

I live in India where Hindus and Buddhist have a hard time getting along with Muslims. To say that it is only Christians that have differences with Islamic teaching is short sighted. Muslims have a long list of people from all different points on the religious spectrum they offend with their behaviors. Even Sunni Muslims don't get along with Shiite Muslims so there is contention within their own ranks. Things are not as black and white as the media tries to brainwash Americans into accepting.

    August 10, 2013 at 12:26 pm |

They don't get along too well in atheist China, either. The problem seems to be that the religion, more than most others, wants to inst itute its rules as law and many members are willing to fight to see it happen.

Keep in mind that this story only gives one side of the story. If the Muslims were parking in a shopping center lot, they've probably been a nuisance for a while. Yes, the sign should have said, "Customer parking only, all others will be towed."

So the Muslims who were offended can decide to not shop at those stores. That's their right. It's also their right to be offended. It is *not* their right to not be offended. Free speech is for all, not just for some.

FWIW, I doubt I'd be willing to shop there, either.

Why Muslims should not be allowed to park anywhere at anytime:

    http://www.muslimaccess.com/quraan/arabic/005.asp et al

o "Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends." (Surah 5:51)
"Believers, when you encounter the infidels on the march, do not turn your backs to them in flight. If anyone on that day turns his back to them, except it be for tactical reasons...he shall incur the wrath of God and Hell shall be his home..." (Surah 8:12-)

"Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Surah 8:36-)

"...make war on the leaders of unbelief...Make war on them: God will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them..." (Surah 9:12-)

"Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians]...until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (Surah 9:27-)

"It is He who has sent forth His apostle with guidance and the true Faith [Islam] to make it triumphant over all religions, however much the idolaters [non-Muslims] may dislike it." (Surah 9:31-)

"If you do not fight, He will punish you sternly, and replace you by other men." (Surah 9:37-)

"Prophet make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home." (Surah 9:73)

"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them." (Surah 9:121-)

"Say: 'Praise be to God who has never begotten a son; who has no partner in His Kingdom..." (Surah 17:111)

"'How shall I bear a child,' she [Mary] answered, 'when I am a virgin...?' 'Such is the will of the Lord,' he replied. 'That is no difficult thing for Him...God forbid that He [God[ Himself should beget a son!...Those who say: 'The Lord of Mercy has begotten a son,' preach a monstrous falsehood..." (Surah 19:12-, 29-, 88)

"Fight for the cause of God with the devotion due to Him...He has given you the name of Muslims..." (Surah 22:78-)

"Blessed are the believers...who restrain their carnal desires (except with their wives and slave-girls, for these are lawful to them)...These are the heirs of Paradise..." (Surah 23:1-5-)

"Muhammad is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another." (Surah 48:29)

"Shall the reward of goodness be anything but good?...Dark-eyed virgins sheltered in their tents...They shall recline on green cushions and fine carpets...Blessed be the name of your Lord..." (Surah 55:52-66-)

"Why Muslims should not be allowed to park anywhere at anytime:"

Your segues are getting worse and worse while your content is still mind-numbingly boring and bigoted. Self-righteous prig.

I don't mind atheists, but a militant, bigoted atheist with an agenda like Reality, (or is it vanity-writing?) benefits nobody except his overblown ego.

    • I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that

I'd gladly support any man who wants to stop anybody from parking on his own private property, but to actually agree with the sentiment is disgusting. Most Muslims are just normal people.

        As noted on previously:

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers, Flight 93 and the Pentagon?

And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-planned acts of terror and horror?

The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means.

Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein.

Until then, no Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

Putting the kibosh on all religion in less than ten seconds: Priceless !!!

        • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

        • As far as one knows or can tell, there was no Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

        • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

        • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

        • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

        • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

        • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated/reborn Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

        • A constant cycle of reincarnation until enlightenment is reached and belief that various beings (angels?, tinkerbells? etc) exist that we, as mortals, cannot comprehend makes for a no on Sikhism.

Therefore, the sign should read: ""No Irrational Thinkers parking in the Westview Shopping Center. Your car will be towed.""

"No Irrational Thinkers parking in the Westview Shopping Center. Your car will be towed."

Then they would have no customers. We are all irrational thinkers to some extent. It is in our nature, in the way our brains are hardwired. Even those of who are highly self-aware, and fully realize our potential for irrationality, still remain subject to it's flare-ups. We can't avoid irrational thoughts. We can only do our best to see them for what they are, and let them fade away before acting on them. It is just a part of being human.

          "The Two Universal Sects

          They all err—Moslems, Jews,
          Christians, and Zoroastrians:

          Humanity follows two world-wide sects:

          One, man intelligent without religion,

The second, religious without intellect. "

          , born AD 973 /, died AD 1058 / .

Al-Ma’arri was a blind Arab philosopher, poet and writer.[1][2] He was a controversial rationalist of his time, attacking the dogmas of religion and rejecting the claim that Islam possessed any monopoly on truth."

o On the koranic passages and world domination:
"Mohammed could not have known the size of the world, but several passages in the Koran show that he envisioned Islam dominating all of it, however large it might be: “He it is who sent his messenger . . . that he may cause it [Islam] to prevail over all religions´(Koran 9:33, M.M. Ali; see also 48:28 and 61:9). M.M. Ali designates these three passages as “the prophecy of the ultimate triumph of Islam in the whole world.”

Mohammed’s successors, the caliphs, quoted passages like these to inspire Muslim armies as they advanced out of Arabia, imposing Islam by the sword upon a peacefully unsuspecting Middle East and North Africa, as I described in the previous chapter.

Islamic armies, imbued with what Mohammed claimed was divine authorization, imposed Islam by force over vast areas, all the while extorting wealth from subjugated Jews and Christians to fund their ongoing conquests. As I noted, major defeats at Tours, France, in A.D. 732, and again at Vienna, Austria, in A.D. 1683, halted Islam’s attempt to take all of Europe by force. Gradually Islamic forces were forced to retreat from Europe, except for part of the Balkans. But Islam has again set its sights on a conquest of Europe and of European civilization, wherever the latter has spread to North and South America and other regions. Muslim strategists ask their followers, Why do we find in these modern times that Allah has entrusted most of the world’s oil wealth primarily to Muslim nations?

Their answer: Allah foresaw Islam’s need for funds to finance a final politico-religious victory over what Islam perceives as its ultimate enemy: Christianized Euro-American civilization. So, Islam follows Nazism, fascism and communism as the world’s latest hostile takeover aspirant.

Nazis, fascists and communists failed. Does Islam have a better chance at success? I believe it will flounder if we awaken to its threat in time; yet, if there is not adequate planned resistance, Islam does have a better chance of succeeding. Communism’s world takeover attempt was guaranteed to fail because its economic policy was naively contrary to human nature. Advocating the rubric What is mine is thine, and what is thine is mine, communism failed to see that human nature will not keep those two balanced propositions in equilibrium. Like

a female black widow spider consuming her mate, the latter part of the formula makes a meal of the former, leading to the collapse of any system based upon that formula.

In contrast, political systems do well if they can persuade people to adhere to What’s mine is mine and What’s thine is thine maxims.

Only if a strong religious incentive is added does such an idealistic formula have any long-term chance. Even then success will be spotty. But communism (and Nazism, for that matter) excluded religion. And that mistake was the final nail eventually clamping a lid on communism’s coffin. Communism, on a historical scale, perished while still in its childhood.

Islam is not repeating communism’s mistake. Mating political cunning and incredible wealth with religious zeal, Islam does have a chance to succeed and will succeed unless major parts of the Western world unite to take appropriate countermeasures. But many Western leaders, unable to believe that a mere religion could possible be a serious political threat, keep proclaiming themselves as Islam-friendly, reasoning that all religions are good-aren’t they?

A Muslim strategist in Beverly Hills, California, declared several years ago, as quoted by a friend of mine: “Now that the struggle between Western democracies and international communism is winding down, it is time for the real and final struggle to begin, and we are going to win!”

  19. Small 'c'

To put the shoe on the other foot for a moment, we have a church near here with a perennial parking problem thanks to a popular tourist site literally next door. In the spring, the pastor had the sign out front changed to "Church Parking Only, all others will be baptized!"

The lot hasn't been so empty of tourist cars, motorhomes and trailers in nearly a decade. However, everyone wants to take a picture of the sign!
