Pope to G-20: Keep your armies out of Syria

(CNN) - Pope Francis on Thursday wrote to the G-20 leaders, saying that military intervention in Syria would be "futile" and urging them to seek a diplomatic solution instead.

"To the leaders present, to each and every one," Francis wrote in a public letter, "I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution."

The pope's letter was addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is hosting the G-20 meeting, where the Syrian conflict is expected to take center stage.

Francis has condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria and called for a day of prayer and fasting on Sept. 7 to press for peace in Syria.

He also chided the international community for letting "one-sided interests" prevent them from finding a solution.

But while lamenting the "senseless massacre unfolding" in Syria, he has also rejected calls for a military strike against the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also urged President Obama and Congress not to use military force in Syria.

"A central moral question is: Will more or less lives and livelihoods be destroyed by military intervention?" Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York and Bishop Richard Pates, who represent the bishops, wrote to Congress on Thursday.

"Instead of employing armed force," the bishops continued,"in this situation our nation, working with the international community, should direct all of its energies urgently and tirelessly toward dialogue and negotiation."

I am only one cry in the long journey to the edge of the beginning of your journey.

Many cries may visit and be your friends.

Some have had a really hard time of it so just avoid the really bad ones.

Naturalistic are the cannabis sativa plants but the unnatural prohibitionists against such plants would rather wage an unmitigated war on such a curative substance then see it becoming the cure for cancers and epilepsies and seizures... America's war on cannabis was made by its first "drug Czar" Harry Inslinger when in the 1930's Harry became the chief of the bureau of narcotics which transcended into the nation's generalized populace via televised propaganda such as "Reefer madness" and turned public opinion away from the very real medicinal benefits of Marijuana's medicinal uses not to mention its plant usages for the paper industries and even the home construction industries and even the fuel industries...

    • Lionly Lamb

I failed to mention Marijuana's uses in the textile industries and even the perfume and soap industries... The plant properties of cannabis sativa would beneficially replace the fossil fuel industries monopolistic stranglehold on practically every nation that has become generationally dependent upon all of the products that can be made with the plant we call hemp, marijuana and cannabis sativa and even grass or reefer... Shame on all nations falling into the grasps of all the oil industries and even the timber trades and the false pharmacological drugs that cannot cure such diseases like cancer and epilepsy and seizures... The potential crop yields in farming of hemp will give farmers four growing seasons a year and this plants fibers would benefit all the textile and paper industries while the chaff or inner part of the hemp plant would be used for ethanol and oil based needs while even the seeds would also supply an abundance for food productions without the effects of enlightenment thru the farming of low grade THC seeds that are now being raised in the production of cannabis plants that have less than .05% THC levels...

WAKE UP WORLD AND SMELL THE BUSINESS POTENTIALS OF MARIJUANA

It has to do with the globalized war on drugs with special recognition to cannabis sativa and the USA nowadays giving the states an allowance for medical marijuana uses to have a "regulated investigation" of its potencies as being a medicine...

Sorry, I replied to your earlier post....I thought you said that "pot was bad", am I incorrect. So, what are you pro-weed or against it? It sounds like you hit the nail on the head with this post. Most people don't realize the history and tend to stick with what is fed to them about pot being bad. So many other countries are waking up and this world would be a far better place if more people toked up.

      SWEET AND SOUR PANDA

      Directions
In a large non-reactive bowl, combine soy, garlic, ginger, flour, and cornstarch. Season the panda generously with salt and pepper. Place the panda in the bowl and toss to cover. Marinate in the refrigerator overnight.

Drain off any excess marinade and dredge the panda in flour seasoned with salt and pepper. In a large frying pan heat 1-inch of oil to 350 degrees F. Fry the panda in batches, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Reserve on a warm plate.

In a separate bowl, combine the ketchup, sugar, vinegar, and honey. Whisk to blend.

In a small roasting pan heat the canola and sesame oils. Place the panda and vegetables into the pan and cover with the ketchup mixture. Bring to a simmer and cook until the panda is tender.

      Proper Planning

It is a terrible thing to lose your thoughts to permanent melancholy.
Logic replaced with dread and misdeed?
Why the same dreams and people?
Why the same shame and funeral?
My potion did not kill me. It doesn’t matter.
Open me and purge it. Make me a child.
Regrets adding up. Must balance the books.

The wrinkles in his fingers smelled of gasoline.
Tremble and swallow and wipe and push and beep.
The little smear looks more like a face than his face does.
Shut the visor with a tap.

He should have been smart enough to die before 50.
He should have been just that stupid.

You do realize that you are wrong about Cannibas right? Check out studies done in other coutries if you want to know the truth. Cannibas is now being hailed as the new miracle drug. There was a study in which is was given to lab rats with induced tumors and the tumors shrank. All sorts of Cancer related studies are being done, along with the fact that it not one death could be attributed to Cannibas...so you should at least throw alchohol and cigarettes in with you post, because they do kill thousands of people yearly. Also, it is now common knowledge that Cannabis does not kill brain cells, it actually stimulates Cannabanoid receptors that handle multiple body functions and regulates them properly. Hell, even Dr. Sanjay Gupta has changed his mind on Cannabis...read his article on this site and maybe you will think a little differently.

    From Wikipedia:
A protection racket is an extortion scheme whereby a criminal group or individual coerces a victim to pay money, supposedly for protection services against violence. Racketeers coerce potential victims into buying "protection" by demonstrating what will happen if they don't. In most cases, the racketeers do not actually protect their client from anything but the racketeers themselves, and their "protection" is merely extortion.

    Slight modification:
A religion racket is an extortion scheme whereby a church or individual coerces a victim to pay money, supposedly for protection services against burning in hell. Racketeers coerce potential victims into buying "protection" by threatening what will happen if they don't. In all cases, the racketeers do not actually protect their client from anything but the racketeers themselves who invented the notion of hell themselves, and their "protection" is merely extortion.

I note the US politicians claim that the users of WMD's on civilians should be "punished". That causes the implication that a couple of other super-powers should first lob a few hundred cruise missiles into the USA, because the USA was responsible for well over 100,000 civilian deaths in Iraq, and it hasn't been "punished" yet. So USA first, and then it's Syria's "turn".

        @Bill Deacon
You know full well that Pius XII is known as "Hitler's Pope".
The Lateran treaty he signed with Mussolini was used by the Axis to argue that the Vatican supported them.
"The fact that the Curia is now making its peace with Fascism shows that the Vatican trusts the new political realities far more than did the former liberal democracy with which it could not come to terms. ...The fact that the Catholic Church has come to an agreement with Fascist Italy ...proves beyond doubt that the Fascist world of ideas is closer to Christianity than those of Jewish liberalism or even atheistic Marxism... "
        – Adolf Hitler in an article in the Völkischer Beobachter, February 29, 1929

Hitler, Franco and Mussolini were given veto power over whom the Pope could appoint as a bishop in Germany, Spain and Italy. In turn they surtaxed their Catholics citizenry and gave the money to the Vatican.

Of course, The Vatican was in a precarious position while Rome was under Mussolini's iron fist -but still they did very little.
The International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission in 1999 found that the Pope was very well aware of the atrocities visited upon european Jews, as early as 1941. He ignored communications asking him to make a stand.
They found too that the claims of the Vatican doing everything they could to help jews emigrate are false.
""The Holy See has never approved of the project of making Palestine a Jewish home...[because] Palestine is by now holier for Catholics than for Jews."
The Vatican's secretary of state, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Montini, had no compunctions about denouncing abuses committed by the Soviet Army against German inhabitants of the Soviet Union.
World Jewish Congress has construed this to mean that the Vatican had not problem violating their "neutrality" when it came to human rights atrocities – and yet the Pope remained silent regarding teh Holocaust.
At times, he tried to help the Jews and was successful. But these successes only highlight the amount of influence he might have had, if he not chosen to remain silent on so many other occasions.

Now – shall we talk about the Vatican's complicity in regard to Ratlines?

        September 6, 2013 at 3:52 pm |
        • Bill Deacon

I know no such thing Doc. I'm aware of the allegations. But, I'm also aware there is equal amount of evidence showing the opposite position. One incontrovertible truth is that Pius XII moved considerable Vatican assets into the American war economy which, to me shows not only a confidence in the Allies eventual victory but a desire to put Vatican material assets at American disposal.

          September 6, 2013 at 4:02 pm |
        • Doc Vestibule

On September 18, 1942, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, wrote, "The massacres of the Jews reach frightening proportions and forms."
Yet, that same month when Myron Taylor, U.S. representative to the Vatican, warned the Pope that his silence was endangering his moral prestige, the Secretary of State responded on the Pope's behalf that it was impossible to verify rumors about crimes committed against the Jews.

Any support given by the Pope came after 1942, once U.S. officials told him that the allies wanted total victory, and it became likely that they would get it.
Only at that point did Puis begin to advise the German and Hungarian bishops that it would be to their ultimate political advantage to go on record as speaking out against the massacre of the Jews. This makes one suspect that the reason was practical advantage rather than moral indignation.

          September 6, 2013 at 4:30 pm |
        • Bill Deacon

Suspect what you like. You're predisposed to that anyway. If the current situation in Syria tells us anything it's that situational ethics in real time are not as black and white as they might be five ten or sixty years later. Individuals within the Vatican, the U.S. government, Russian politburo and English Parliament all debated the appropriate response to Nazism in the years preceding and even after the invasion of Poland. You have the luxury today of making your stance based on the outcomes our grandfathers worked out. A similar scenario is playing out today in Syria where it is difficult to sort fact from fiction and political gamesmanship from statesman like leadership.

Why is the Pope, among others, calling it military intervention? It needn't be anything of the sort. Just a very personal, very special delivery – a clear and concise message to the very top of the Syrian war machine. "And then I realized–like I was shot...like I was shot with a diamond...a diamond bullet right through my forehead... Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure."

The more I dig into the Syrian conflict the least assured I become that outlanders should get involved... As my being a U.S. citizen, I will not ever back a war of aggression toward Syria or any nation's civil unrest... The USA along with Russia has their fingerprints on practically all the weapons being used in Syria's warring factions including gassing agents...

Shameless are those who granted such an underdeveloped nation like Syria to acquire all manner of warfare utensils... It's a dying shame that is considered being criminal acts on the backsides of any and all developed nations to hand over such weaponry to any and all intellectually underdeveloped nation countries... Syria does not have the intellect to produce chemical agents so just who are the ones responsible in selling Syria such chemical weaponry..?

  19. Reality

From a former member of the US Army's Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Corps:

The Syrian leaders need to be taken out quickly before they again use nerve or biological agents and/or mustard gas on their population or elsewhere.

    • I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that

Where's the proof it was the Assad regime? Also, why is this the policy only when it suits the US government? Remember Iraq/Iran 1980? Iraq were supported in their use of chemical weapons.

      • Reality

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_chemical_weapons_program for what appears to be a good review of the Iraqi chemical weapons' development and use. It appears the Germans, Austrians and Soviets were deeply involved in the Iraqi commercial production and use of said chemical weapons.

  20. What if Putin is correct?

If a nation threatens an imminent attack on another nation, shouldn't the nation about to be attacked strike first instead of waiting to be hit? Iran already claims to have Hezbollah inside the USA waiting orders to strike. Does that mean we can expect a terrorist attack HERE in the USA? Or did they think they could just fire some tomahawks and sail off into the sunset??
