Illinois bishop plans gay-marriage exorcism

By Daniel Burke, Belief Blog Co-editor

(CNN) - The devil made them do it?

According to a Catholic bishop in Springfield, Illinois, Satan was behind his state's recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

So, next Wednesday, at about the same time Gov. Pat Quinn signs the gay marriage bill into law, Bishop Thomas Paprocki will hold an exorcism ceremony "in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage."

Paprocki, who's something of an expert on exorcism, says he's just following the Pope's marching orders.

When Pope Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, was an archbishop in Argentina, he called that country's legalization of same-sex marriage "a 'move' of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God."

In a statement released on Thursday, Paprocki said: "The pope's reference to the 'father of lies' comes from the Gospel of John, where Jesus refers to the devil as 'a liar and the father of lies.' So Pope Francis is saying that same-sex 'marriage' comes from the devil and should be condemned as such."

Since his election as Pope in March, Francis seems to have taken a less combative approach to homosexuality. At a news conference in July, for example, he said "Who am I to judge?" a gay person who seeks to be a good person.

Illinois politicians - including Catholics - cited the Pope's words when explaining their support for the state's same-sex marriage bill.

In September, the Pope said the church has no right to "interfere spiritually" in the lives of gays and lesbians and chided Catholics who "obsess" about fighting culture war issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.

MORE ON CNN: Pope Francis: Church can't 'interfere' with gays

But Paprocki calls same-sex marriage "contrary to the plan of God" and says all Catholics who support it - from legislators to county clerks who issue marriage licenses - are "culpable of serious sin."

The bishop has invited priests and lay Catholics to his exorcism ceremony, officially called "“Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage,” which is scheduled for November 20 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois.

Paprocki says the ceremony will follow the Catholic Church's Rite of Exorcism, which explains that Satan not only possesses people, he can also invade places and things, including the church itself.

"We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church," Paprocki said.

Exorcism is experiencing something of a renaissance in the United States, with the Catholic bishops recruiting dozens of priests to perform the ancient rite. Paprocki is among the bishops leading the recruiting drive.

The bishop should do some snake handling and speaking in tongues for good measure. A skull dance would seal the deal.

Not to nit-pick but I never knew anyone "choosing" to be an atheist. When you use logic and reason and realize there is no evidence for a deity then you have no choice but to be an atheist.

      November 15, 2013 at 6:08 pm |
      • brainwashed atheist

Yea! Logic and reason always leads to atheism. That is why there are no Christian mathematicians, scientists, doctors, astronauts, military leaders, professors or lawyers. It is not like we can use logic an reason to justify our own behaviors as superior and, like, instead of being logical and rational we are really just arrogant and smug.

The lawmakers in Illinois should be ashamed for legalizing perversion. This country is following the same path as Sodom and Gemorrah.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

          one-way,

You are the LIAR. Their sin was GREED according to God. If you consider that to be an unreliable source, that's your problem.

          observer,
the bible is very plain about the sin of Sodom (hence we got the term Sodomites). You either don't know how to read plain english or you are intentionally deceiving yourself and trying to twist the bible to make it say what you want it to say.

          one_way,

You are clueless. God said the "sin of Sodom and her daughters" was that they were greedy.

        (1) The Sodomites were destroyed for the general wickedness which had prompted the Lord to send angels to the city to investigate in the first place; (2) the city was destroyed because the people of Sodom had tried to r-pe the angels; (3) the city was destroyed because the men of Sodom had tried to engage in h-mos-xual in-ercourse with the angels...; (4) the city was destroyed for inhospitable treatment of visitors sent from the Lord.[1]

John Boswell thinks that explanation (2) "is the most obvious of the four," though it's been "largely ignored by biblical scholars."[2] Boswell expands on explanation (4), the one he seems to favor as most consistent with "modern scholarship" since 1955:

It always amuses me when Christian leaders think they know enough to question their own God's designs and plans.

Think about this. They teach that their God made everyone exactly how he wanted them. Then question whether God made a mistake with gays, and try to "fix" them.

If it is true that the Christian God is the one who will judge these people, I would love a ring side seat.

I have been thinking about God and the Bible. Why did the Christian God put Satan in his garden? No one else could have put the devil there but God? Also, God, knowing the future, knew Adam and Eve wouldeat it the fruit, but He did not stop it. Thus, it was His plan. A third thought, If God controls all things here on earth, why does the devil and his evil able to do whateverthey want? No one seems to control nor stop the devil or evil? Again, evil on earth must be God's plan.

I thought an exorcism required a possession. So who is possessed, the governor, the legislature, the people who issue the marriage license , the court house the state house who or what? We should all pray very hard for the Pope he gets it. This guy not so much.

The bishop should consider sacrificing a sheep and burning it. God likes burnt offerings so it would increase the chances the exorcism would work.

Now that the morning contestants are all in, it's time for tonight's competi.tion. You only have one hundred words. Please choose your favorite Catholic superst.ition from those below. For the one you choose, please say why it is any more ridiculous than the rest of the garbage Catholics swallow and give an example of a non-Catholic belief which is just as stupid.

    a. Grocery store bread and wine becomes the flesh and blood of a dead Jew from 2,000 years ago because a priest does some hocus pocus over it in church of a Sunday morning.

    b. When I pray for something like “please god help me pass my exam tomorrow,” an invisible being reads my mind and intervenes to alter what would otherwise be the course of history in small ways to meet my request.

    c. You can pray to a dead person for something. This dead person will then ask God to fulfill your wish. If this happens twice, this dead person becomes a saint.

    d. A god impregnated a virgin with himself, so he could give birth to himself and then sacrifice himself to himself to negate an “original sin” of a couple we now know never existed; or

    e. There is an immortal, totally evil being that God (who loves us so much) could kill if he wants to, but won't. This devil wants all Christians to sin so he can burn them forever. Periodically, this devil comes to Earth to possess people – but only the mentally ill. He never possesses the emotionally stable and well-adjusted members of society.

I had a "gay exorcism" by religious leaders at my church. It was so spiritually, emotionally and mentally damaging that it brought me to the brink of suicide. It is ungodly and in humane. It is sinister beyond words. This is done in the name of God? No...this is the devil deceiving the masses..hate hidden behind religion. This cannot happen to any more humans...it is too damaging to people.
