Illinois bishop plans gay-marriage exorcismBy Daniel Burke, Belief Blog Co-editor [twitter-follow screen_name='BurkeCNN'] (CNN) - The devil made them do it? According to a Catholic bishop in Springfield, Illinois, Satan was behind his state's recent legalization of same-sex marriage. So, next Wednesday, at about the same time Gov. Pat Quinn signs the gay marriage bill into law, Bishop Thomas Paprocki will hold an exorcism ceremony "in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage." Paprocki, who's something of an expert on exorcism, says he's just following the Pope's marching orders. When Pope Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, was an archbishop in Argentina, he called that country's legalization of same-sex marriage "a 'move' of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God." In a statement released on Thursday, Paprocki said: "The pope's reference to the 'father of lies' comes from the Gospel of John, where Jesus refers to the devil as 'a liar and the father of lies.' So Pope Francis is saying that same-sex 'marriage' comes from the devil and should be condemned as such." Since his election as Pope in March, Francis seems to have taken a less combative approach to homosexuality. At a news conference in July, for example, he said "Who am I to judge?" a gay person who seeks to be a good person. Illinois politicians - including Catholics - cited the Pope's words when explaining their support for the state's same-sex marriage bill. In September, the Pope said the church has no right to "interfere spiritually" in the lives of gays and lesbians and chided Catholics who "obsess" about fighting culture war issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. MORE ON CNN: Pope Francis: Church can't 'interfere' with gays But Paprocki calls same-sex marriage "contrary to the plan of God" and says all Catholics who support it - from legislators to county clerks who issue marriage licenses - are "culpable of serious sin." The bishop has invited priests and lay Catholics to his exorcism ceremony, officially called "“Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage,” which is scheduled for November 20 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois. Paprocki says the ceremony will follow the Catholic Church's Rite of Exorcism, which explains that Satan not only possesses people, he can also invade places and things, including the church itself. "We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church," Paprocki said. Exorcism is experiencing something of a renaissance in the United States, with the Catholic bishops recruiting dozens of priests to perform the ancient rite. Paprocki is among the bishops leading the recruiting drive. |

Self righteous...and wrong.
yes you are. I am impressed that you are man enough to admit it.

How can this not have a sound track.
Why doesn't the dumb-a$$ exorcise the pedophiles from the catholic church ?
Yeah, now that would be a good use of exorcism...if it actually worked.
And when the exorcism is completed and _NOTHING_HAPPENS how will that be interpreted?
Certainly not as "I'm barking up the wrong tree and I oughta shut up."
Nope, sadly that won't be it.
With so many things in this world to be worried about, supporting Universal Marriage is NOT one of them.
Atheism is a man-made religion. Don't believe their lies.
all religions are man made.
L, you say?
L?
Don't be coy.
snowboarder?
you apparently have me confused with someone else.
Don't be coy.
coy is just one of the many words that I am not familiar with.
And what lies would those be, exactly?
He better use bottled holy water.

Jus' sayin'
I am also Catholic, and I think this guy is bonkers. If he is truly concerned with gay people, he should start an outreach program to gays and others who have left the Church.
He is not bonkers at all. You are at best a cafeteria catholic.
no. he's bonkers.
and people wonder why we ridicule the overly religious. this guy is practically inviting ridicule. it would be impolite not to oblige.
You're posting of the gay marriage video is truly disgusting . The fairy tale weddings, pardon the pun, are god forsaken and abominable.
not sure why you attribute the videos to me, but there is certainly nothing wrong with them.
sodom – All love is from God. Who are you to call the love between two people of the same gender "disgusting?"
Matthew 7 – “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
Actually, I'm surprised that the Church would let this bishop put on his show. This will come back to bite them in the butt.
I am American, and although I do not agree with everything the U.S. does, it does not make me any less American. Similarly, I am Catholic, and although I do not believe in everything the Church teaches, that does not make me less Catholic.
THE NEW DENOUNCE WOMANS VIOLATIONS NICOLAS MADURO CILIA FLORES AND OBAMA.
CRA-HAY-HAY-ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Nothing will change in the external world because of this exorcism. I wonder if the bishop will notice.
Bishop Thomas Paprocki fingered me.
Why not just cast a spell? Or put a hex on somebody? It's the same thing.
This bishop is not playing with 52 cards or one brain.
And just what is someone that wants to marry within their own gender playing with, besides eternal damnation?
lol! "eternal damnation" do people really believe that nonsense?
Look, let's assume that you're correct about the eternal damnation thing. Don't you think that it should be their choice, either way? Isn't that what "free-will" is all about?
Also, why would anyone respect a god that damns people for their se.xual orientation?
No matter what, it's their choice, even if you are right about all of it (which you are not).
When I read this a friend asked me if I was laughing or crying. Although both would be a valid option I couldn't get the image out of my mind of a church with a disco ball and tubular bells playing in the back ground.
Maybe Pope Francis will kick him out of the Catholic Church??
You're right. A gay Church wedding with an exorcism thrown in could be the start of a really great party (and a trend).
Can't....stop...laughing. x D
He should do a ritual of exorcism for expulsion of the sin of child molesting and interfering with its investigation by Catholic clergy.
I agree.
This is a new concept, so I wonder what he thinks will happen after the exorcism? I cannot believe someone at such a high level is putting so much energy into this belief that gays are so evil.
Wow business must be really bad for the exorcism market right now.
@JJ : When you use logic and reason and realize there is no evidence for a deity then you have no choice but to be an atheist.
What are the facts that you used to support your reasoning skills?
the most prominent is the innumerable deities, religions and doctrines invented by man over the course of history. man is very adept at inventing god.
So??
ironically, I have never met a person that did not believe that their god and their doctrine was not the one true doctrine.
that simple fact should speak volumes to the veracity of any claim.
@snowboarder : the most prominent is the innumerable deities, religions and doctrines invented by man over the course of history. man is very adept at inventing god.
We seem to agree that Satan is very adept at mimicking God's teachings to deceives His followers, but that doesn't seem to support your conclusion to reject God. Tell me, if the math problem is 2 + 2 = x, what does X equal? There are infinite wrong answers, but how many right ones?
@live, satan is just another of the inventions of the imaginations of primitive men. it is so unfortunate that people try to blame their actions on the nonexistent.
@snowboarder : satan is just another of the inventions
So, you don't dispute the fact that there is only one correct answer. Then we agree.
@l4h, one correct answer to what?
@snowboarder : one correct answer to what?
To the question(s).

and the red horn-y devil made me to IT L4H
Pope too.
@l4h, I have to assume you are being intentionally obtuse because you possess no logical reason for your religious belief other than indoctrination.
it is nearly universal that a person "choice" of religion is really no choice at all, but simply a factor of the time and location of their life. it is no coincidence that iran is 99% muslim and the u.s. is 75% christian.
you are a moron ... If god tests us, and god knows all, how can he conduct a test that he already knows the result of ?
God is a perpetual no show.
And whose fault is that?
if a god were to exist I would blame it.
@snowboarder : if a god were to exist I would blame it.
You would blame another for YOUR failure to meet? Why? Can't you accept responsibility for your own actions?
@l4h, if god were to exist he would certainly be culpable for the pathetic state of his creation. fortunately for all, that is not an actual consideration.
Santa Claus/Thor/Bigfoot/Tinkerbell is a perpetual no show, too. Whose fault is that?
What fact is there about your God, and how did you come by it?
@Tom, Tom, the Other One : What fact is there about your God, and how did you come by it?
Would you like it if I were to change the topic every time you asked a question?
* You just did (change the subject), L4H.
@Hear This : You just did (change the subject), L4H.
Of course. Since he won't stay on topic, then he shouldn't expect me to stay on topic.
I'm sorry, Live4Him, let's keep you on track: What facts are there about your God that an atheist might use to reject it or that you might use to believe in it?
Nope. That is a philosophical statement. Not a fact.
@An actual scientist : Nope. That is a philosophical statement. Not a fact.
Did you post to the wrong thread? My post was a question, not a statement.
Whoops. Not directed at you.
This is a philosophical statement:
"When you use logic and reason and realize there is no evidence for a deity then you have no choice but to be an atheist."
It is not a fact.
I use all of the facts that people like Live4Him present as evidence that god doesn't exist.
Please note that a good number of us Catholics think this man is a looney. This article does NOT reflect all our opinions, beliefs, or those of the Vatican. Im betting he grts called on the carpet pretty quickly.....
I'm superior to you.
Why?
I would propose that some catholics possess common sense and will be unable to support this bishop's loony behavior.
What is it about what the Pope has said recently that this bishop has not heard?
The Pope, while being the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, is not the final say on such matters. The Bible, which is God's Word, is the final say.
And of course, your view of what the bible says is the correct one.
Too bad the Bible was written and interpreted over and over and over again by MEN.
I gave up believing in a god a long time ago. When you've seen and experienced the things I have, you know there is no omniscient being out there. There is just the here and now, and the good and evil in men's and women's hearts and minds.
