Illinois bishop plans gay-marriage exorcism

By Daniel Burke, Belief Blog Co-editor

(CNN) - The devil made them do it?

According to a Catholic bishop in Springfield, Illinois, Satan was behind his state's recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

So, next Wednesday, at about the same time Gov. Pat Quinn signs the gay marriage bill into law, Bishop Thomas Paprocki will hold an exorcism ceremony "in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage."

Paprocki, who's something of an expert on exorcism, says he's just following the Pope's marching orders.

When Pope Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, was an archbishop in Argentina, he called that country's legalization of same-sex marriage "a 'move' of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God."

In a statement released on Thursday, Paprocki said: "The pope's reference to the 'father of lies' comes from the Gospel of John, where Jesus refers to the devil as 'a liar and the father of lies.' So Pope Francis is saying that same-sex 'marriage' comes from the devil and should be condemned as such."

Since his election as Pope in March, Francis seems to have taken a less combative approach to homosexuality. At a news conference in July, for example, he said "Who am I to judge?" a gay person who seeks to be a good person.

Illinois politicians - including Catholics - cited the Pope's words when explaining their support for the state's same-sex marriage bill.

In September, the Pope said the church has no right to "interfere spiritually" in the lives of gays and lesbians and chided Catholics who "obsess" about fighting culture war issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.

MORE ON CNN: Pope Francis: Church can't 'interfere' with gays

But Paprocki calls same-sex marriage "contrary to the plan of God" and says all Catholics who support it - from legislators to county clerks who issue marriage licenses - are "culpable of serious sin."

The bishop has invited priests and lay Catholics to his exorcism ceremony, officially called "“Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage,” which is scheduled for November 20 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Illinois.

Paprocki says the ceremony will follow the Catholic Church's Rite of Exorcism, which explains that Satan not only possesses people, he can also invade places and things, including the church itself.

"We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church," Paprocki said.

Exorcism is experiencing something of a renaissance in the United States, with the Catholic bishops recruiting dozens of priests to perform the ancient rite. Paprocki is among the bishops leading the recruiting drive.

If there is a Satan, then he is the one that started the Catholic Church. The Church has done as many bad things as good. Belief in God is fine but get rid of the religions.

Since when does a government push an agenda to reward perversion? This is becoming one twisted society.

The reality is you want rights to marry into unproductive and unproducing relationship with the SAME gender. Ais has already developed out of many of your relationships. Mother nature will take care of you eventually.

Which is nothing to be laughed about, as seen with this newest example in a long line of examples of borderline psychotic behavior by this religion....which apparently they call "love".

Pope Francis believes hom.ose.xuality is a sin, has blamed Satan for same se.x marriage and supports the Catechism which promotes exorcism. Everyone fell for the PR, but this guy is going to conveniently lift the veil.

Gay marraige has been legalized because of politicians looking for votes from anyone they can get them from. They sell out their principles and morals for votes as Obama did. As you can see from the comments, people don't change their minds much or quickly like Obama did for his votes. You can change the laws all you want, you can mark me down but the truth prevails. This society is sending the wrong message to it's young people for only a few caight up in perversion

    November 15, 2013 at 12:38 pm |

I think religion is a pretty serious perversion. But the point is, even though I think it's a terrible thing, I don't try to make laws telling you you don't get the same rights if you're religious.

It'll never happen.

You're really obssessed with perversion. Methinks you have a little kink in you and you don't want to admit it. It's ok. Come out and be free!!

          November 15, 2013 at 1:57 pm |
        • kk929

And why does anyone else's "perversion" matter to you? No one is forcing you to marry someone of the same gender, and you can still bring your children up with your moral values. And no, unmarried couples (regardless of gender) don't have the same or equal rights as a couple who is married. That's the whole point. The church and whoever else can think it's wrong all they want, but they can't infringe upon the rights of people in a country that proclaims that "all men are created equal" and claims to have a separation of church and state.

Did this guy follow the rules? Per yahoo the following has to be done for exorcisms

In addition to consulting with a doctor and psychotherapist, pastors are encouraged to use the insight and use of psychology to distinquish between hysteria and mental illness and genuine "diabolic possession."

A doctor or psychotherapist would be able to tell him that gay people are that way because of biology and not because of satan. Or perhaps they need to do this rite at the zoo, and save animals like giraffes.

Hopefully the pope recalls this hateful person and explains to him why the modern world is leaving behind this very old church.

Any wonder people think the Catholic Church is irrelevant? On an up note maybe it will help the church rid itself of the pedophiles which seem to be quite an exercise of many within the church. Did seem to bother them much when all that was revealed but God save us from the union of two people that love each other and will contribute to society as a whole as family units no matter what their make-up stregthen society and lessen the burden by individuals who fall on hard times and have no supportive structure.
